Thousands and Thousands of years ago, there were three ponies. They were the great Demons of Equestria. Each Demon had a special ability. The first Demon could brainwash other ponies. The second could look into the souls and dreams of ponies. Finally, the last Demon could use Necromancy. These ponies were said to be “just a myth,” until some ponies mining very far underground, found their tombstones and told the Princess. The Princess and the miners swore to secrecy, and the miners filled the hole and told no one about the tombs. The only way they could be risen back from their eternal sleep was if the majority of Ponykind feared them, so spreading the word that the three Demons were real, would strike fear into all the hearts of ponies. That would eventually bring them back from the dead. The fear required wasn’t objective. If ponies were afraid, the Demons could be awakened. So the Princess gathered all the ponies in one island on the whole entire planet, and made a force field of happiness, and called it the land of Equestria, hoping that they would never awaken the three Demons.

One day, in a more recent time, the ancestor of King Sombra, Midnight, tried taking the universe by using the three Demons. His plan was to destroy the universe, then create an entirely new one in his own twisted image and be the Ruler with the three Demons as advisors. There was a great battle between Midnight’s goons, and the Equestrian Army. The Equestrian Army had one advantage though, they had engineers. Inventing all sorts of guns and weapons that gave us the one up. Midnight was captured, and his goons were scattered, was thought to be dead. Midnight, at the mercy of Princess Celestia and Princess Luna, was banished deep underground encased in a block of pure obsidian. Being forgotten down deep in underground by everypony, including Celestia and Luna. In the battle there were many lives lost. The great Equestrian Engineers were destroyed. Except one Engineer, Gear Shift. He was the only Engineer who had been spared somehow. So Princess Celestia and Princess Luna kept great care of him. Gear Shift was in charge of a great project. It was a machine that could keep the three Demons from escaping forever. The only way to make the machine work was to have the Elements of Harmony as part of the machine. The Engineer crafted gems to replicate the original Elements, because the real Elements of Harmony had disappeared. Little did Gear Shift know, he had made a link between the real and fake Elements of Harmony.

The day that Princess Celestia banished Nightmare Moon, it drained the power of the force guarding the Tombs. Leaving the Tombs unguarded, it would be simple to free the Demons without causing mass panic and fear throughout Equestria. Midnight’s prison, however, was guarded by a different spell, one that just left him unable to cast spells. But there’s a reason why magic prison spells decay.
