My eyes wander through the darkness. They're used to do so, looking for the smallest glimps of light.
I'm searching for the light, for the safety it promises, the warmth it might spend.
I don't know how much time has passed since I started looking for the light.
Minutes?
Hours?
Days?
Maybe longer.
And then I finally find the light.
"Don't go closer." Something whispered. The voice was soft and reassuring.
"Don't go too close to the light. It will burn you."
"Don't scare the kid." A other voice answered the first. This voice was rough and deep. Almost guttural.
"Come closer, child." The voice hissed.
"Don't let the light you see restrain you, Child. Not every light means safety from the shadows."
The last voice.
I heard it before.
I heard it before...
But when?
My eyes open. My breath is calm and soft, my heartbeat normal.
But I still feel weird. Like something was wrong, like something was missing.
I slip out of the sheets, slowly lowering my hooves to the wooden floor. My eyes wander through the room, to the door.
It was ajar.
Someone or something opened the door.
I walk to the door, slowly taking a glimpse through the crack.
"- how can we let her do this?" My mom's voice, filled with sadness.
"We have no choice, Luna is right." My father, his voice was also sad.
I open the door and walk out, noticing the first rays of the sun outside. It was dawn.
"Crescent." My mother looks at me with a shocked expression, quickly turning away so I can't see the tears.
Which I already did.
"It's too early for you to be awake. What woke you?" My father walks closer, his expression was calm, as if nothing has happened.
"I noticed that my door was open and I went to see why, then I heard you two whisper."
My mother gasps, turning around to look at me.
"How much have you heard?" Her voice was still sad.
"Not too much." I answer, "Only something about dad saying 'we have no choice, Luna is right' or stuff like that."
"Something wrong?" I ask.
"No, nothing." Mom answers, her voice almost mechanical.
"Then what was Princess Luna right about?" I ask, taking a step closer.
"With nothing!" My mother snaps at me, looking at me, anger, annoyance and pain reflecting in her eyes as tears start to steam down her cheeks. "Go back to bed!"
I take a step back, looking at her expression.
"Siren!" Dad takes a step between us. He turns around and looks at me, smiling apologetic. "It's okay Crescent. Nothing happened, just go back to bed."
"You sure dad?" I raise a brow and look back at mom. "Mom looks pretty upset."
"You heard your father! Go back to bed!" She snaps again, but this time she collapses. Falling to the floor and hiding her face behind her hooves. I could hear her sobs and see the tears streaming down her face.
"Dad what -" I start.
"I explain it later." He answers quickly, sitting down next to mom and embracing her, consoling her.
I gulp. "O-okay. Later then." I walk back into my room, moms soft sobs in my ears, and close the door behind me.
A perfect start for this day.
I couldn't go back to sleep after this, I heard mom and dad walk out of the hallway, down into the kitchen. For a second I thought about following them, just to find out what was wrong. But then moms expression appeared before my inner eye.
This angry and hurt expression.
'What managed to hurt her so much? I've never seen her like that.' I think, my thoughts kinda slow after just waking up.
I fall back on the bed, rolling on my side and looking at the wall.
At the wall were four photos.
One was of mom and me on my first day of cadet-school, all 'grown up.' My mane was combed, my uniform fitted perfect. A serious expression on my face. That day I was far too nervous to smile.
The second showed me, dad and my little sister Meteor Dust. It was our first time stargazing. Especially Meteor Dust loved it. The clear night sky, the thousands of stars. It was also the very first picture of my sisters cutie mark.
'Strange.' I think to my self, looking at the cutie mark of my sister. 'We were stargazing but her cutie mark is a sun.' My eyes jump to the third and fourth picture.
The third was me and dad after I've finished cadet-school, holding up my school certificate, with the fat "Passed" stamp on it. It was also my 17th birthday.
The last picture was a picture of the whole Sparkle family, made a year ago. The whole family was there. Grandma Velvet, grandpa Light, aunt Twilight, mom, dad, myself and my sister. We were all gleaming.
'Looking at the picture now...' My thoughts travel off. 'Why isn't auntie Luna on the photo?'
I close my eyes to think about this mystery.
Princess Luna has been always there when something family related had happened. She had been there when my sister was born. Or the day Grandpa died, she even came to his burial. And after all it was nothing special for her to appear at random times to eat dinner with us or to invite us to dinner in the castle. It was strange how close the Sparkle family was with the Princess.
I know that mom and Princess Luna are friends, even though mom never used her friendship with the Princess to her advantage. She works for Princess Luna as her personal secretary and bodyguard, taking the same shifts as everypony else, working as hard as everypony else.
My thoughts get slower as the warmth around me crawls up my spine. Making me sleepy.
I turn around and look at the clock.
It was a few minutes past seven. I didn't had to get up till nine.
I pull the sheets back up and close my eyes.
'Only a few minutes.' My thoughts get slower as the sleep overtakes, pulling me down into the darkness and some sweet dreams.
Sweet dreams of Vivid Night.
