The Last Man on Earth
Destroyer of Worlds
Load Full StoryCharlie sat in the security room as he continued to study the CCTV monitors mounted around him. They'd be here, that much he was sure of but when, was the real question. He had been sitting in the rather uncomfortable office chair for nearly a day according to the time-stamp on one of the screens. He had already finished preparing the facility by establishing defcon 1 and locking all of the five-foot think lead lined doors. The Patriot missile was fueled and the launch codes had been entered. It was simply him the facility and the most destructive device to be built by man.
The nature of Charlie's job wouldn't allow for him to be converted as he was an important asset to the United States. Unfortunately that didn't stop his co-workers an colleagues from participating. Charlie however, couldn't exactly figure out why he didn't join them. If he got converted their was little the government could have done about it but despite this Charlie remained human. Charlie was unsure of himself. Maybe he should give up; maybe being a pony is worth it. No, he thought, I have to do this. For my friends and family. For the country those bastards took from me. And for all of the people that wanted their humanity.
With a new resolve Charlie sat upright just in time to see certain white alicorn walk up to the bunkers front vault door. Looks like that spell found me faster than I expected. He concluded. Charlie wasn't worried The ponies wouldn't be getting in any time soon; the bunker was designed to stop a direct nuclear strike and to resist any radiation including magic. But none of that mattered. They wouldn't need to get in he was coming to them.
Charlie exited the security room after grabbing 9mm Handgun from the table. Walking down a flight of stairs he reached the launch room. Sticking out of two identical control panels were a pair of keys; both had been turned to Arm. On the main display were details about the missile and it's flightpath to China.
Approaching the main control console Charlie noted the clichéd red button and the socket it had been torn out of. In its place rested a shortwave radio that had been wired into the launch circuit. Charlie grabbed an identical radio and placed it into the breast pocket of his bullet-proof vest. Picking up the improvised detonator, he connected the protruding wire into the radio's microphone jack. He was ready to go, all he had to do was push this button and let go and the deed would be done.
Charlie walked up to the bunker's unimpressive concrete box lobby; complete with folding chairs and fake plants. Continuing on Charlie reached the vault door. He reached for the handle to manually unlock the door and paused. Well this is it, he thought, Once I open this door I'll have sealed my fate. Well, I had a good run I guess but this needs to be done. And with that Charlie pulled the handle causing eight steel rods to retract into the door unlocking it. Charlie once again paused to grab the detonator in his left hand and his gun with the other.
Finally, he slowly pushed the door open causing the unicorns on the other side to stop shooting. He pushed the door the rest of the way open and stepped out. In front of a line of unicorns stood Celestia herself flanked by several earth ponies and pegasi. Charlie cautiously approached the princess, gun and detonator at his sides. Once he reached there the two stood and starred at each other for a few minutes before Celestia spoke, "Human it is time for you to join us."
"No!" Charlie involuntarily shouted. He leveled the the gun at her and raised the detonator.
Celestia laughed, "You don't have a choice."
Charlie clicked the button and fearfully threatened, "S-Stay back. Or I'll blow it up." Charlie regretted coming outside but realized it was pointless now.
"Blow what up?" Celestia asked malevolently, now inches away from Charlie's face. Charlie tried to pull his gun's trigger but nothing happened. He'd glanced down at his gun to see it gripped by Celestias magic.
He look into her eyes, dead serious and whispered, "Everything." And with that he dropped the detonator.
Celestia waited a moment to see if their was any truth behind Charlie's words. Nothing. She backed up and charged her horn before firing the conversion spell at Charlie who simply stood starring at the detonator as it dangled from the radio. The spell knocked him on his back and he erupted into a ball of light as his silhouette transformed into that of a unicorn's.
Charlie simply stood looking around. He couldn't remember why he was there. He ultimately decided it wasn't very important otherwise he wouldn't have forgotten. The answer satisfied him and with that he wandered off in a seemingly random direction never bothering to take off the bullet-proof vest.
Celestia smiled as she watched him walk away stumbling once or twice because of his new body. She was done, the humans had been cleansed and now she could- Her train of thought was interrupted by a thunderous roar from behind her. She turned in time to see a massive pillar of steel shoot off into the sky trailing smoke behind it. Celestia wasn't sure what to make of this and simply decided that it couldn't cause that much damage and that she had to start converting earth it self.
Shortly after it's launch the ICBM began its descent into the once human city of Beijing. The 60 Megaton Thermonuclear Warhead detonated vaporizing the entire city and the millions of ponies inside of it.
Inside of a dark control room somewhere in one of the Chinese mountains a control screen flickered on displaying a report of a nuclear strike. When no action was taken the computer's emergency programming took effect and executed the M.A.D. protocol: Mutually Assured Destruction. Within minutes every nuclear weapon in the Chinese arsenal was launched at countries around the world.
Back in the Untied States, New York suffered a similar fate as Beijing and just like in China a computer monitor inside NORAD turned on. The monitor displayed a report of a nuclear attack and requested immediate action. When none was taken the computers at NORAD assumed the worst and commenced the M.A.D. Protocol.
Within hours every major city on earth was reduced to ash by nuclear fire. The ash gradually floated up into the atmosphere where over the years it spread has spread out completely blocked out the sun and crating a nuclear winter that killed almost all life on earth.
