Love is in Bloom
Fluttershy
The sun was bright overhead. As I was walking down the path from my house, I looked up to the canopy of the trees, leaves falling around me.
It's a beautiful summer day today! I just need to get more lettuce from the market, then I can relax down at the beach with Twilight and Applejack!
Suddenly, I bumped into something. I was startled, but relaxed once I saw it was just Apple Bloom.
"Hello Apple Bloom. Nice day today, isn't it?"
"It's fine. Ah was just heading up ta Sweetie Belle's."
"Have a wonderful day!"
Oh! I guess I should introduce myself. My name is Fluttershy Whisperwing. I'm twenty-three years old, and I live in Ponyville. As you can guess, I'm rather shy. I've tried being more assertive; I learned how to stay nice while also asserting myself. Anyway, I'm rather tall, almost six feet! I love animals, music, and writing.
Where was I... Oh! The market! I was going to the market to get lettuce. When I arrive, who should be there but my friend Applejack! She's usually nice to me, as well as everyone else, except for that one time involving the Vampire Bats. She is a few inches taller than me, and is wearing her usual outfit, an orange shirt over work jeans and her signature Stetson. Her blonde hair is tied in with a red ribbon and is usually hanging over her right shoulder. Applejack is two years older than me.
"Howdy Fluttershy!" she exclaimed.
"Oh, um hi." I meekly replied.
"So, what you come here ta get?"
"Oh, just some lettuce."
We walked together in the market place, which is filled with men and women going about, doing their shopping. One particular man seems to be following us, but I didn't pay any attention to it.
"So Applejack, how's the orchard doing after the 'Bat Incident'?"
"It's doin' just fine! You were mighty helpful, and because of ya our trees are two-hundred percent stronger!" Applejack declared.
"Oh, glad I could help. Anyway, I was going to head down to the beach with you and Twilight. I hope you don't mind."
"Why would Ah? You're mah friend, and I know ya are just achin' to ask Twi out."
Oh, I guess I forgot to mention. I have a crush on Twilight, my friend and the town librarian. She's just so... cute when she obsesses over a random subject. I always volunteer for experiments when I can, because I want to spend more time with her. I know she wouldn't even allow me to be tested on when she wasn't sure it would end up all right. Luckily, she wasn't harmed last time, when her potion that she said was supposed to help my flight blew up in her face.
"Wait," sneered the man who was following us, "Did you say you wanted to ask out the Princess?"
"Do ya have a problem with that?" Applejack growled, obviously ready for a fight.
"Yeah! I do! You gays shouldn't be allowed to have equal rights! They are going against everything Celestia has put in place about marriage and sexuality!"
A crowd was starting to form around Applejack, me, and the man. Unfortunately, most of the crowd was cheering him on.
"A'right, you listen here," Applejack stated, poking the man in the chest, "Y'all are gonna leave mah friend alone, and we are gonna get to fightin' right here, right now."
The man didn't seem intimidated, even though Applejack was a good five inches taller than him.
"Oh please, I wouldn't touch a faggot like her!"
That was the last straw for Applejack. AJ readied herself.
"Besides, what's a hick like you gonna-"
The man was cut off my AJ, who threw a left hook across the man's face. The man brought up his hands to defend, but was thrown back by AJ's right hook, breaking the man's nose. AJ then delivered an uppercut that knocked the man out.
"Anyone else wanna try me?" she triumphantly declared.
I was suddenly grabbed from behind and spun around. I couldn't even scream out before another man threw a jab into my nose, probably breaking it in the process. I stumbled back, only to have receive a hook to my left cheek, bruising it in the process. A woman walked up and slapped me across the face, her fingernails cutting my right cheek just below the eye. A third man swept my feet, knocking me to the ground as well as twisting my ankle. As a small trickle of blood streaked down my cheek, and more blood flowed from my nose, AJ had gotten free of the people holding her back and was now beating my assailants.
"And this is fer messin' with mah friend!" she shouted while kicking the second man away.
"And this is fer usin' that word!" she roared as she knocked the woman and the third man away.
A familiar voice from above called out, "Hey AJ, I'll get Shy over to Twilight! You can handle these assholes?"
AJ called back, "You sayin' Ah can't hold mah own?"
"No, but there are like ten of them," the voice answered.
By this point, I had gotten behind a market stand, curled up into a ball, trying to stop the bleeding.
"Ah can handle it!"
"Alright!" the voice swooped down, revealing Rainbow Dash, my oldest friend. She has an athletic build and unkempt rainbow hair. She is a few inches shorter than me, and was wearing a blue shirt and athletic shorts. She was kneeling next to me, hand on my shoulder.
"Shy, it's okay. You're with a friend. I'm gonna take you to Twilight, and she'll fix you up."
I stopped shaking and got up. Rainbow held out an arm to help me up. I took it and wrapped an arm around Rainbow's shoulder to steady myself on my twisted ankle. It was a painful, arduous walk to the library, and I nearly fell down three times. Once we made it to the front door of the library, Rainbow sat me down, leaning against the wall next to the door. Rainbow knocked on the door twice, then a second later twice again. The door finally opened to Twilight Sparkle.
Twilight is probably my second closest friend after Rarity, and she is the object of my desires. She is about an inch shorter than me, and has a slight build. Her skin is naturally pale, even spending days at the beach doesn't tan it in the slightest. Her well-combed hair is always off to the right side, with bangs in the front falling to just above her glasses. She was wearing her usual purple sweater over blue jeans.
"Rainbow, what the Hell happened?"
Twilight was frantic when she saw the blood covering my sweater and covering my hand, which I was holding to my cheek to staunch the flow.
"There was a fight. Shy's hurt."
Rainbow held out a hand. I grabbed it and lifted myself up. Blood was still dripping down my face. I limped past Rainbow, and to the waiting arms of Twilight.
"Thanks for bringing her to me Rainbow. Tell Applejack that she should work on her one-hit knockouts," Twilight said knowingly
"Can do!" Rainbow assured.
Rainbow flew off, leaving Twilight to lead me over to the couch.
"You'll be fine. Trust me." she soothed.
She laid me down upon the couch.
"Where are you hurt?" she asked, dabbing at my cheek with a rag.
"Bruised cheek, cut cheek, nose, twisted ankle," I replied bluntly.
"Alright. The spell will take until tomorrow morning to complete, so would you mind staying over?"
I nodded my head.
Twilight pointed at me. Her hand glowed in a purple aura. I felt a tingling sensation as the aura on her hand targeted my nose, and both cheeks. It felt like my nose had gone numb. My cheeks felt like they had just been slapped. I felt a slight tug as she fixed my nose and got rid of the bruising. The cut on my cheek was healed, but still left a scar.
"Sorry, I can't completely heal it. But it shouldn't be hurting anymore. I fixed the nasal bone, and the only thing lift is your ankle. This one is the one that will take the night to heal. The ligaments are very delicately orientated; I have to be careful. It's going to hurt, so I'm going to perform a sleeping spell on you first. You okay with that?"
"Yes," I briefly replied.
Twilight's hand lit up again, and I instantly fell asleep.
I woke up in Twilight's bed. It must have been two AM. My ankle felt good as new. I rolled it a few times to find it had completely healed. Twilight was nowhere to be found, so I got up to head downstairs, as I noticed the light coming from the hallway. In the main room, Twilight was sitting on the couch, reading with a glass of milk next to her and a lamp shining on the book she was reading.
"Ah Fluttershy. Sorry, I may have over powered the spell a little. It really took a lot out of me. You know that when a Mage casts a difficult spell they get really tired, right?"
I nodded. I remember Twilight explaining that the Mages have a special part of the brain that allows them to use magic. Too much magic means that that part of the brain draws in as much energy as possible, leaving the user tired and dizzy, or in extreme cases unconscious.
Mages are what you would call "Unicorns." We call our "Pegasi" Volantini.
"Well it turns out that I'm the exception. Apparently my brain is wired so that whenever I use particularly difficult spells, it gives the energy to my active mind instead of the energy being channelled into whatever I use the magic on. That's why people feel warm when under the effect of a spell. I just can't sleep, and I know you just woke up. So, we can spend time together."
Twilight scooted over on the couch, giving me room to sit next to her. A cold breeze blew through, making me shiver. Twilight felt the shiver and silently got up and grabbed a blanket. Unfurling it over herself and I, she motioned for me to lean on her shoulder so I could see the book.
In a clear voice, she began to read...

"I find a good poem book once in a while calms me down. This one reminds me a lot of you. You always listen and understand, and even though you see my flaws, you still care for me because you know deep down that I need to have friends like you around. Anyway, I was thinking we could talk for a bit. You know, get to know each other better. I've never told you girls about my life before moving to Ponyville."
"I would love to just sit here and talk."
Twilight began, "Well, I was born in Canterlot, and I am of Coltalian descent. Even as a young girl, my parents knew I was different. And I am different, though not in the ways they wanted. You see, when I was thirteen, I came out as bisexual, just about fifty-fifty. My parents did not like this one bit. They grounded me for a month. My father hit me over it. It got so bad that it gave me a scar on my nose. Shining, however, supported me all the way. Shining, who was twenty-eight at the time, was over on vacation, and he offered, no, ordered me to pack my things and leave my parents. I obliged. This was after I performed my test for Celestia's School for Gifted Mages, but before Celestia herself said she would be my personal mentor. The Sparkle family won't continue through me or my brother. He legally changed his last name to "Armor," when he came of age, as "Shining Sparkle" was a rather redundant name. I celebrate my birthday on the day I was finally freed from my parents, March 20. Would you like to say anything about yourself?"
I meekly nodded. "I too am of Coltalian descent, with a little Germane thrown in. When I was three, my parents died in a weather accident. I was sent to the San Franciscolt Orphanage, until I was fourteen, when I ran away. I got on a train and fled to Cloudsdale. Once there, I was taken in by the Dash family, later to be formally adopted by the Reign family. My adoptive mother was the genius behind Marecrosoft, so I get a lot of money from them. I became fast friends with Rainbow, as in those days I was not only a fast flier, but also rather confident. However, my friendship with Dash led to bullying, as Rainbow was called "lesbian" and the F-word on a daily basis. The bullies thought I was gay for Rainbow Dash, and they teased me. It was true to a certain extent, I'm about fifty-fifty bisexual, but I never had feelings like that for Rainbow. We were like sisters. Anyway, they attempted to attack me after school one day, and the things they said and did shook me even to this day. There was a crowd of them, pointing and laughing. That broke something inside of me. I was traumatized. I lost all my confidence, so I couldn't fly nearly as fast. I developed stage fright. Luckily, Dash was there to help me. She did her best to get the old me back, but nothing she did helped. Dash and I grew more and more distant, until we ended up like we are now. But, I've been working on it. I just need someone close who understands me."
"I understand completely where you're coming from. Fluttershy, just know that no matter what happens, you will always be my friend. I will never forget you. I will never forget one line of this. Not one day. I'll always remember when the only one who would listen to you was me. Fluttershy, I want you to know that I will love you as a friend until the day I die. In fact, I think I may love you more than just as a friend."
"Oh, I've think I've loved you since the time we were sent to wake up that dragon. I don't know, once I saw that you five were knocked into that rock, I lost it. But, looking back, you were the reason I lost it. Applejack and Pinkie are strong and durable, Rainbow Dash has had worse crashes, and Rarity had Pinkie to land on. But when I looked down and saw you there, lying on your side, moaning in pain, I felt only anger. These feelings only strengthened when you came to save me from the Hydra, and when I found you in the Everfree, turned to stone. I just... I saw you as more than just a friend. I think I may love you."
I suddenly realized that I had subconsciously leaned in toward Twilight. She blushed, noticing for seemingly the first time the intimacy of our situation. I was laying on her slightly, and our heads were mere inches apart. My heart was racing. I for the first time noticed the light freckles on the sides of her nose, as well as the faint scar she mentioned running up the bridge. I could feel Twilight's breath on my face grow more and more sporadic. Then, Twilight looked me right in the eyes and leaned in. Our lips touched for the first time, and I felt like I was going to have a heart attack right there. Twilight's lips were firm, but yielding and slightly chapped. I smelt the perfume Twilight must have put on that day, lavender. That mixed with the scent of old books created an aroma that I found perfect.
At this moment, Spike tripped over a book in the dark and fell down the two steps leading into the room. Twilight and I both jumped up and ran over to him.
"It's fine! I'm fine!" Spike exclaimed, running off into the kitchen. He ran out a minute later with a glass of water.
Twilight looked at me, then realized that I was blushing.
"Oh! I'm sorry, was that too sudden? Should I have asked you out first? Do you hate me? You probably do. Ohnonono this is terrible. I had one shot and I screwed it up. What would-"
I cut Twilight off by leaning in, tilting my head, and locking lips with her. I ran one hand through her hair, while the other remained on her waist. Twilight's arms wrapped around my back, moaning softly. I slowly pulled away.
"Well," Twilight said, "I guess I can now say I not only love you as a friend, but I love you as a girlfriend."
"If you're okay with that. I guess we are dating..."
"Oh believe me, I am very okay with dating you. You're just so... cute and unbelievably nice."
"Oh my... Twilight, you are oh so cute, especially when you, um, are reading a particularly good book. The way your face lights up at certain parts is just the cutest thing I've ever seen."
Twilight and I had been slowly ascending the stairs to Twilight's bedroom. Her room was on the small side, but it was still pretty grand. She had a fireplace that was currently lit, and she had a deep red cherrywood bed with purple sheets. Her window was half open, letting a nice breeze fill the room. She had a mahogany desk scattered with pencils, pens, and paper. Twilight went over to the bed and got under the covers, leaving enough room for me. Motioning for me to lay down, and once I did, she snuggled up facing me, hugging me around the waist and resting her head just above my chest. My heart was beating erratically. Not only was that my first kiss, but this was my first time sleeping with someone.
"You seem a little nervous."
"I am," I confirmed, "This is the first time I've, um, slept with someone."
"Don't worry. I won't bite."
Twilight raised her head so her amethyst eyes were looking directly into mine.
"Has anyone ever told you that your eyes are beautiful?" she asked.
"No. Has anyone told you that yours are?"
Twilight leaned over and gave me a quick kiss on the cheek.
"You have. Well, goodnight."
"Goodnight Twilight..." I replied as I dozed off.
I suddenly woke to a strange smell.
Oh, that's nice. It smells like a barbecue. I like it. Wait, barbecue? Smoke? Smoke! Fire!
I bolted upright and yelled for Twilight to wake up.
"What is is?" she groggily asked.
"Fire! We have to go!"
Twilight snapped awake and ran upstairs to gather a few belongings from her dresser.
"The lab in the basement! Go there!" she called.
Spike was up, and quickly opened the metal door to the lab.
"Fluttershy! In here!"
I ran over, before realizing that Twilight still hadn't come down yet.
Spike tried to close the door, but I stopped him, running out to find Twilight.
"Twilight! Where are you?"
I ran to Twilight's bedroom, hearing a weak coughing coming from the closet. I opened it to find Twilight, wheezing and coughing after inhaling too much smoke.
"Please... Help..." she hoarsely told me in between coughs.
Adrenaline kicked in and I was able to carry her. Bits of the ceiling were coming loose, so I had to dodge around falling debris. One piece of debris nearly hit us, but a quick magic shield from Twilight stopped it. Twilight's shield only lasted a few seconds before she passed out, but by then I was well away from the danger. I threw open the front door to the library to see countless firefighters already on scene. As I fainted to the ground, I felt strong arms supporting me.
"-ttershy?"
The voice was distant and faint, but recognizable.
"Flutter-"
The voice seemed closer, and was louder.
Mom? Is that you?
"Fluttershy?"
I slowly opened my eyes.
"Fluttershy! Can you hear me?"
As my vision focused, I made out Twilight standing over me. We seemed to be in a hospital room, and Twilight was the only person in sight.
"Twilight?" I groaned, "What happened?"
Twilight took a seat on the edge of the hospital bed, and turned her head to face me.
Twilight answered, "There was a fire. The library burned down, and you saved me and Spike. Don't worry, Rarity said she'd take care of Spike. You know how much he loves to help her. But, I don't have a place to stay."
"You can stay with me. I have more than enough room."
Twilight smiled. "I knew you would say that."
The door opened and a doctor with dark brown hair entered. He held a clipboard in his hand, and a pen in the other.
"Well, Ms. Sparkle and Ms. Whisperwing, you both have some damage from smoke inhalation. As long as you stay away from smoke, you should be healed up in no time. As such, we are allowing you to go home tonight. You should really give thanks to your friend Rarity. She volunteered to pay off all of the medical bills in advance, so you don't have to pay anything. Also give thanks to your friend Applejack, Ms. Whisperwing. She was the one who carried you to the ambulance, and stay by your side the entire time before viewing hours were over. And, Ms Sparkle, seeing as your home has just burnt down, I assume you have arranged a place to stay?"
Twilight nodded.
"Very well," the doctor continued, "As I said, you both can leave today. If any problems arise in the future, my name is Doctor Stable; just ask for me."
The doctor nodded and left the room. Twilight held out her hand to help me up. I took her hand and heaved myself up.
"Shall we?"
"Certainly."
Arm in arm, we briskly walked out of the hospital, down the busy street, and arrived at my cottage. Digging my keys out of my pocket, I glanced over at Twilight. She was looking off into the distance longingly.
"What's wrong?" I asked.
"It's just... That library was my home. All I have left is this bag of personal belongings."
"You have me," I pointed out.
"Yeah, I guess you're right."
I laughed inwardly, deciding to channel Rainbow Dash for a second.
"Yeah, I'm always right."
I laughed, and Twilight's expression went from confused to entertained.
Unlocking the door, I gestured for Twilight to enter first. I turned on the lights, revealing my modest living room. I had a light-blue couch facing the large flatscreen TV. A red chair was next to it, and a coffee table was in the middle. I saw that Applejack had been over the night before, as the fireplace was going and Applejack was sitting in the red chair.
Don't know how I missed her truck on the way in.
"You two a'right? No one got hurt?" Applejack asked worriedly.
"We're fine," Twilight answered, "Spike is staying with Rarity, and Fluttershy volunteered to have me stay over for a while."
"Really, it's no problem," I assured Applejack.
"Well, Ah just came over ta see if y'all were a'right. Ah couldn't make it over ta the hospital, 'cause Ah had ta do mah chores. It's good seein' ya a'right and all," Applejack said as she walked over to the door.
After she left, Twilight took a seat on the couch. I took a seat next to her, and leaned over, resting my head on her shoulder. Twilight's arm wrapped protectively around me as she turned on the TV. The news happened to be on at that time.
Authorities are saying that the fire that destroyed the Golden Oaks Library was not an accident. Police are still looking for the arsonists responsible. Princess Celestia herself has made a statement on this event:
"When these criminals are found, they will be charged with a crime much higher than simply arson. No, they will be charged with one count of arson, three counts of attempted murder, and two counts of treason, on the grounds that of the three in the library, two are Bearers of the Elements of Harmony, and one of them is a Princess"
"Who do you think did it?" Twilight asked, scared out of her mind.
"W-well, the f-fight yesterday was because a man had a p-problem with me trying to a-ask you out," I whispered, terrified.
"I wouldn't worry about that much. Applejack probably thought of something."
Twilight turned off the TV and got up.
"I guess you should show me around. You know, show me where I'll be sleeping, where the bathroom is, stuff like that."
"Oh! I completely forgot! Anyway, this here is the living room. The kitchen is off down that small hallway." I pointed to the hallway on the right. "Also down that hallway on the right is my music room, please don't go in there without my permission. The bathroom on this floor is the door on the left." I moved over to the stairs. "This hallway behind the stairs leads to the animal rooms, where I take care of the sick and injured animals." Twilight followed me up the stairs, which led to yet another hallway. "This hall has the upstairs bedroom to the right, and a computer room to the left. The door at the end of the hall is the master bedroom, and that's where you'll be staying. If you're not comfortable enough, I can sleep on the couch."
"But we're technically dating and living together, so we may as well share a bed. Besides, I have no idea how long it will take for the library to be rebuilt. In my personal bag, I had thrown in all of my favorite books, my brother's old reading lamp that he gave me when he left for the Academy when I was twelve, most of my wardrobe, all five of my spare pairs of glasses, some lip balm, a potato battery, all of my friendship letters, the Diary, all of my notebooks filled with notes on quantum mechanics, twenty test tubes of various sizes, a bunsen burner and my sonic screwdriver."
Twilight must have seen my confused face and quickly added, "Yes, all of them. Yes it still works. No, it's not that much clothing-wise. Yes, I have five spare pairs. You can always use lib balm. I was bored. Those were vital to keep. So was the Diary. I have twenty-nine, to be exact. Yes, I need that many. No, I won't burn anything down. And finally, I was bored. The bag is bigger on the inside."
"Well, you would like to get comfortable, wouldn't you?"
"I think I will," Twilight winked.
Twilight stepped forward, and stood mere inches away from me.
"I never did thank you properly for saving my life."
Twilight leaned in and our lips connected. A surge of energy went through me, as if Twilight's lips were a battery. Twilight had her arms wrapped around my back, and I had my hands pressed to the back of her head. Twilight pulled back for a second, just to get a fresh breath, before leaning back in. We sat there, lips locked together, for a good minute before Twilight pulled away.
"Well, it seems that it's night out. And I don't know about you, but I'm very tired."
I looked out the window, shocked that it was already night.
"When did we leave the hospital?"
"About seven-thirty."
"Ah, that explains it. I didn't know how it could have been this late. Speaking of which, I am incredibly tired. Would you like to, um, accompany me to the bedroom?"
"I would love to."
Arm in arm, we stepped up the stairs, down the hall, and into my bedroom. My bedroom is one of the largest rooms in the house. There is a large window overlooking the field out back and the forest in the distance. Hanging on the wall in front of my bed is another flat screen TV. My bed is an oak Coltifornia King with green sheets, a heavy dark green blanket, and some plush pillows. Twilight took a seat on the edge of the bed. I went around the bed and sat near the pillows, facing the TV opposite the bed. Twilight curled up next to me, resting her head on my shoulder.
"Um, Fluttershy? I was just wondering, and this is totally awkward of me to ask, but can I just sleep in my underwear? I'm much more comfortable that way."
I blushed, imagining Twilight in just her bra and panties...
No! Bad brain! Bad, bad brain!
"Well, um, I guess that would be fine. But only if you, um, let me sleep naked." I stammered.
"I'm sorry, what was that at the end?"
"I'm most comfortable when I'm, well..."
"Go on..."
"When I'm naked! Please don't be angry at me!"
Twilight laughed. "That's fine. We're both adults here, and we both know the anatomy very, very well. I won't look though. I'm not ready for that step yet."
Twilight turned as I stripped, giving me ample time to cover myself. Twilight took off her sweater and shirt, as well as her jeans. With all of her concealing clothes off, I could finally take note of her body. While on the thin side, she looked... wonderful.
Twilight must have caught me staring, because she commented, "Like what you see?"
"Um... Um... Eep!"
Twilight laughed. "I'm just kidding. I'll make breakfast tomorrow."
Twilight lifted the covers, before lying down next to me.
"Anyway, what is it you like for breakfast?"
"Pancakes and bacon. Don't say anything, I know. 'But Fluttershy, you love animals, so how can you like bacon?' Now it's true that I love animals. But, I only buy bacon from certain companies, companies that I know are humane. We evolved here with canines for a reason. There should be a pack in the meat fridge in the basement. Just remember, don't go in my music room without permission. That is the one thing I ask of you. That's my personal room; I'll let you in if I feel like it's okay. In return, you may stay here as long as you want, and can use any other room, including my painting room. Deal?"
"Deal. Now, let's get some sleep."
Twilight closed her eyes and snuggled up to me, or rather, the thin blanked I put around me. Eventually, the short breaths on my neck lulled me to sleep.
I woke to the smell of bacon.
Mmm, bacon.
I got up and went over to the wardrobe. Putting on a white bra and matching panties, a brown shirt, jeans, and a green sweater, I descended the stairs. Entering the kitchen, I walked up behind Twilight and gave her a kiss on the back of the neck.
"Ah Shy, I can call you that right?" Twilight asked, turning towards me.
"Of course. Can I, um, call you Twily?"
"Of course Shy. As I was going to say, there's a jazz concert at Sugarcube Corner tonight. Would you like to accompany me?"
I looked away. "I'm terribly sorry Twily, but I made plans for tonight. It's too late for me to change them. I would love to, but I can't.
Twilight's face fell. "Oh, well if you can't make it..."
"Twily... Don't take it personally. You know I would love to go. I love music. Next time, alright?"
Twilight smiled. "Alright. Next time it is."
I moved closer to Twilight and gave her a quick peck on the cheek. Twilight blushed, and we sat down and ate our breakfast.
