~{Part 1: Long-Distance Relationships}~
"Princess Celestia! You mustn't disturb her highness's bed chambers!" A large, burly stallion covered in violet armor breathed heavily as he galloped after the tall white figure that angrily passed his post.
"I know you're doing your duty soldier, but I shall see my sister as I please! Return to your post." The stallion stopped in his tracks and hesitated before saluting.
"As you wish, Princess Celestia..."
Now free of her troubling follower, Celestia quickly sped up her pace as she reached a tall set of spiraling stairs that climbed all the way up the second tallest tower in the castle. What would take a normal pony a good few minutes to climb took Celestia mere seconds as she nearly flew up the ancient steps until coming to an abrupt stop in front of a door atop the stairs. One calming breath later and the door slowly opened to reveal a large mass of pillows in the center of a large, circular bed chamber.
"Luna, get out here right now!"
A few seconds passed before a light giggle seeped through the mound of fabrics followed by a small rustle among the cushions. Celestia let out a sigh while moving one pillow after another until a long, dark blue horn poked out of the pile.
"Get out here now!"
A new reply answered her in the form of a long sigh as many pillows glowed bright blue and slowly floated into a corner of the room in another big pile to reveal a midnight blue mare still laying on the ground. A quill, inkwell, and piece of paper sat in front of her.
"It's nice to see manners have finally become useless in this era." Celestia furrowed her brow at her sister. Luna simply returned the look with a shrug and gently lifted the the writing utensils; she sat them down neatly onto a nearby dresser. Once everything was organized accordingly, Luna turned back to her sister.
A simple "What?" was all that she could think to say before plopping back down onto one of the remaining cushions. Celestia's expression was unaltered despite her usually formal sibling's change in attitude.
"I came here tonight hoping that you would give me an explanation for this little note I found stashed under your seat in the Royal Hall!" A small slip of paper fluttered to the floor until it rested at Luna's hooves. Her eye's widened slightly as she read it.
"You were searching through my throne?"
"Hardly, it's pretty easy to spot a snow-white triangle sticking three inches out from under your cushion!"
Luna leaned back slightly at Celestia's newly frustrated tone.
"So I misplaced a paper under my throne! I don't see what the issue is!"
At that, Celestia picked the slip back up and unfolded it to reveal the full note. She put emphasis on clearing her throat before reading aloud.
Dear Princess Luna,
Thank you for the last letter you sent me! It's been a hard time keeping things in order here in Ponyville but your letters have made it bearable. Spike has grown so much since Nightmare Night! He's grown at least two feet taller! I'm a little worried that I'm bothering him with so many letters. He says that it is no big deal but I think we should try sending mail normally a bit more.
Anyways, I'm sorry I haven't been to the castle for my own visit. I really miss seeing you face to face, every night I think of you and when I do I can't help getting emotional. It would really help if you considered telling Princess Celestia about us; it's becoming almost impossible to not drop everything and go see you. Alas, I know it must be hard for you. Just know that I shall stay by your side regardless of what choice you make. My life has been wonderful since our feelings were realized and I treasure every moment we have. I hope to hear from you soon!
Love,
Twilight Sparkle
The room filled with hostile silence as soon as Celestia finished speaking. She could immediately see the flaming daggers trying to escape from Luna's eyes.
"You read MY letter?!" Luna stood up and walked up to her sister angrily.
"You're courting MY student?! How long has this little fling been going on sister?" Celestia was met with a lock of pure blue mane to the face as Luna turned her head back abruptly.
"It does not matter how long we have been together. What matters is that you have gone through my private mail!"
"Luna! Do you know what you are doing to my student and yourself?" A gold-clad hoof turned Luna back to face her sister.
"Besides the fact that you are over 2000 years older than her, you seem to have forgotten our role in this world. We can't just go around interfering in the lives of ordinary citizens!"
"I would think that you of all ponies would know that Twilight is anything but ordinary and you can not honestly tell me that you never had at least some kind of romantic encounter during my absence. Shining Armor's peer seems to have been keeping close to you as of late."
A light pink hue flushed across Celestia's face as Luna shot her an accusing stare.
"He is simply my personal guard. Nothing more, nothing less!"
"I'm thinking you've been taking the words "personal guard" a little too far! Who are you to judge me when you cannot resist distracting the Equestrian Gu-!" Celestia's hoof hit the floor with enough force to interrupt her sister. She took in a deep breath before speaking.
"That is ENOUGH Luna! I refuse to let you jump into a commitment like this!" Luna flinched, her sister had never used it since her return, but the Royal Canterlot Voice was definitely still within her vocal arsenal.
Before Luna could argue any further, a gust of wind whipped through the room as Celestia walked briskly out the door and loudly closed the door behind her. A tear slowly fell down Luna's cheek, it had been awhile since she had felt such frustration with her sister. The feeling she felt was not sadness or confusion, she did not blame her sibling for her views. Anypony would've done the same thing in her position. But that didn't make Luna feel any better. How could Celestia expect her to just stop having feelings for the one she loved? Regardless of what the answer was, Luna silently swore to herself that she would not let a simple spat stop her from loving Twilight.
Now alone, Luna flung herself back into her pile of pillows and hastily dug around to the bottom of the heap. A few moments of frantic searching stopped when the smooth texture of a feather brushed against her hoof. The feeling of paper soon followed along with a small inkwell.
Luna crunched up the wrinkled paper into a tight ball and watched as it quickly burnt up into flames. A new, smooth sheet of parchment appeared from a small explosion of sparks where the old paper ball once floated. The quill quickly flew up to make contact with the paper.
Luna didn't fully know what the best way of handling this situation was. Maybe it would be best to just let things go until Celestia had calmed down; maybe fighting for her feelings now would convince her more easily. Maybe simply giving up the whole relationship would save both her and Twilight from the many troubles and pains that this might put them through; there just wasn't a clear solution that Luna could decide on her own. But she did know one thing...
Dearest Twilight,
We need to talk. I am coming to visit in two days.
Love,
Princess Luna
Author's Note
It has BEGUN! After way too much time, I have finally found the inspiration to finish the first chapter of this story! It has been a long, hard progress that had way too many issues than what I would've liked. Over the last few months I have been thinking about my kinds of writing. I still like my stories but I feel like my general ideas have been too generic or uncreative for my liking. I will be honest that there was a point where this story might not have happened. I still have about 5 half-done intros to new stories that I dropped after about 2 weeks of work. Now that I was able to complete something that I thought was good, I might go back to those and work on them along with Chapter 2 of this story. Sooo look forward to that!
Thank you to everyone who reads and supports this story along with all of my other stories! My inspiration has returned somewhat so I will try to get a new chapter out soon!
