//-------------------------------------------------------// DW: The Arrival of The Doctor. -by TheSilentAuthor- //-------------------------------------------------------// //-------------------------------------------------------// Part 1: In the Garden //-------------------------------------------------------// Part 1: In the Garden "Thanks to your memories this universe will burn and there is nopony else to blame but you." A slight breeze had begun picking up as she made her way through the town. It was strange, but she couldn't shake the strange feeling that was now dwelling within her mind. "Good day to you Carrot Top." Mrs. Cake called out from her shop's door. "Same to you Mrs. Cake, hope the little ones aren't giving you too much trouble today." She said with a smile. Mrs. Cake chuckled. "Nah, they been pretty good so far. Though it's always busy around here as you know." Carrot Top nodded. "Well I probably stop by sometime later this week, but I do have to get going." "Oh really, what is on the agenda for today?" She asked. Carrot Top stopped in place. For the life of her, she couldn't think of any reason to go into town. "I, I have some things to pick up. You know tiny errands that need to be done." She said. Mrs. Cake nodded. "Well then I'll let you go on your way then, see you later dear." Carrot Top kept walking forward, though she still tried to remember why she came into town for. "Was it to pick up groceries? No I did that just two days ago." She said coming to the center of town. Everypony in all of Ponyville must have been out and about today, for it seemed very crowded in the streets. Her eyes kept darting from face to face. There was something strange in the air, something she couldn't quite put her hoof on. She decided that she needed to sit down and just catch her breath for a second. Turning around she noticed that one pony was staring at her from across the street. It was that one pony who she always saw around town but never talked to. "Mr. Turner was it?" She thought. He just sat there staring at her with a sad expression on his face. Glancing around to make sure she was the only one he could have been looking at, she smiled and waved. He response was nothing more than a bitting of his lip, and quickly he moved along. "Well that was strange." She said to herself. "Now then where was I?" She began to make her way home as the sun began to descended in the sky. Surely it couldn't have been that time of the day already could it? It seemed so early for the sun to begin going down. As she made her way to the front door of her house she remembered that she had forgotten to water her plants. Once taking care of that, she made her way inside to prepared for the night that was to come. Eventually she settled down into her bed and began to drift into sleep. "Well lets hope I don't wonder into town like that again." She thought to herself. With that she fell into sleep and remained there for a solid amount of hours. Then, out of nowhere came a racket like nothing she had ever heard before. It was soon followed by a thunderous rumble that shook her entire house. Leaping out of bed, she feared the worse. "It's an earthquake!" She gasped while heading for the door. Throwing the front door open she expected to see the entire town out wondering what the commotion was. Though to her surprise there wasn't even a cricket chirping in the still night sky. "Where is everypony at? Didn't they feel that violent shake?" She asked. She waited for a couple of more minutes and her suspicions were proved false. "I guess I am loosing my mind. Though I swear that was an earthquake." She said heading back inside. As she entered, she noticed a strange light beaming from the window overlooking her garden. She took caution making her way over to the window. Peering out she could see a great cloud of smoke rising into the sky. Her mind instantly thought something was on fire and she quickly got a bucket of water ready. Rushing, she flung open the back door and stepped into the backyard. The smoke was pure white and very thick. Then she began to notice the ground around her was all dug up like a plow had gone through it. Before she could fling her bucket, the smoke began clearing the area and revealing that there were no flames. As the smoke cleared she began seeing a large object lying on the ground. It was like a giant box and from what she could tell, it was made of wood. Also the paint on it was a blue that she really couldn't described. Words were also present in nice white writing that read "Police public call Box".There were tiny windows that were giving off a faint glowing light that must have been illuminating from within. "What in the world is this thing?" She asked herself. "Better question is where did it come from?" Looking up, she wondered if it just fell out of the sky or something. "I got to go fetch somepony about this." As soon as her back was turned, she heard a loud bang that came from the inside of the box. Turning around, she witnessed part of the box fling open like a door. Smoke pored out from within, more than that could have possibly fit in there. "Well that could have gone smoother, but at least your still in one piece." A voice echoed. "Hello is somepony there?" Carrot Top asked rushing over to the box. A hoof popped out and clung to the side of the box, then another. "Here let me help." She said grabbing both and pulling. Straining, she used all her strength and pulled for all her worth. Whoever it was must have been had to be a full grown stallion for the weight and texture of the hooves seemed to suggest it. "Almost there." She said preparing for one more great tug. "one, two, three!" She said yanking the pony out. The success of pulling him out sent her stumbling to the ground and the stranger landing on top of her. He quickly got off of her and looked around. "What on earth is this place, what happen to…what happen to?" He said before becoming silent. Carrot Top rubbed her head. "What happen?" "I don't know, thats the scary thing you see. If I don't remembered than that means something had to happen, which I don't remember. That also the possibility that somebody probably wiped my recent memory clean and sent me to a random planet." He said turning around. "What planet am I on anyway?" He stopped and gazed at Carrot Top. Carrot Top looked at him funny for he looked a lot like that fellow Mr. Turner . Not just looked alike, but he had to be his twin brother or something. The resemblance was almost frighting, he even had the same cutie mark. "Planet? What planet, you in Ponyville Mr. Turner." He frowned at that. "I never heard of the planet 'Ponyville' before, and whats all that rubbish of 'Mr. Turner'. Also how come you're a horse and you're speaking proper english! Though I could understand you regardless, horses don't speak english! One second." He said looking back into the box. "All the way down there are you, one second horsey." He said to her before diving back in. Carrot Top shook her head. "Did he just call me horsey?" He popped back up with a metal object in his mouth. "Mr. Turner are you feeling alright, if you need I go and get a doctor." "Turner, this Turner, why do you keep calling me that?" He asked. "Cause that's the name everypony calls you." She said. "Nonsense I've never been here before, and believe me I would remember. Again, how do you know proper english, you're a horse." He said. "Mr. Turner I don't know whats gotten into you but you're starting to freak me out. I am mare just as much as you're a stallion." She said backing away. "I'AM A WHAT?" He asked dropping the object to the ground. A look came over him as he begun looking over himself. "Tail, hooves, mane, body, well thats something different." He said. After a quick pause his eyes grew big. "I AM A HORSE! I am a horse! I need a mirror, where is a mirror around here that I can use?" Carrot Top rushed into the house and came back with the mirror she used in the mornings. He almost snacthed it out from her grasp and began examining himself. "No, no, no, no this is impossible I can't be a horse." He said while feeling his chest. "Two hearts still, thats good. Brown mane and tale, not bad brown on the coat either. Eyes still fine, so I guess thats still going for me." He said tossing the mirror back to Her. "So I guess am a horse, weird, never thought I would get to experience something like this." Carrot Top almost threw the mirror down. "Mr. Turner I have had enough this babbling of yours." "For the last time why are you calling me that, my name isn't Turner." He said trotting around in a circle. "Oh, got to get use to this whole four legs thing." "You're last name has to be Turner cause you look exactly like fellow Turner who lives here. You have the same cutie mark too." She said. "A what mark?" He asked. She pointed to his side. "Oh, would you look at that it's a little hourglass, how charming." He said. "Still isn't helping the fact that I am now a horse on some strange planet, and can't seem to remember how I crashed here." "Crashed here?" Carrot Top asked. "Yes me and my ship here." He said. Carrot top looked confusingly at him. "You're ship, but that's just a…" "Big wooden box? Trust me it's a lot more than that. It's my ship, my Tardis." He said. "That stands for 'Time And Relative Dimension In Space' mind you. It takes me everyplace and everywhere I need to go, except for here." "That thing is a ship?" Carrot Top asked. "I just got done explaining that didn't I?" He asked annoyed. "You're joking me right? I mean come on who put you up to this, this is completely upsurded." She said heading back into her house. "I am going back to bed, good night Mr. Turner." She said slamming the door. "My name isn't Turner." He called out. "Well this is a weird predicament I am in, but first things first. Lets get you back upright." He said turning to the Tardis. Carrot Top was stumbling out of bed, as the morning sun was shining through her bedroom widow. Was all that last night just a dream? Sure felt like one. She went down stairs and cracked the back door open, just to sneak a peak. To her dismay, Turner's strange box was still out there, though it was standing straight up. Looking around she stepped forward to get a better look at it. Surely if the thing was made out of solid wood it would have been impossible for him to lift it by himself. She was within reaching distance when she began hearing a beeping noise. It sounded so faint yet so close at the same time. Putting her ear up to the wood frame, she began listing for it sounded like the noise was coming from within. "What is that?" She asked. Suddenly, the wall she was listing in on opened up. The result was her falling to the ground and bumping her head. "No, no thats impossible there can't be one here. I mean if I don't know where I am at then how would one of them be here." Turner said while emerging from the box. He looked down at Carrot Top. "I am sorry, did I scare you or something?" "Why are you still here?" Carrot Top asked. "Well I haven't been here the whole time, I took a trip back through all this world's history. Really good stuff, though I could have done without that whole upsidedown world you lot had going on for awhile. Despite that you're history is really fascinating. I mean your kind has little technology, yet somehow you have invited trains before other major advancements. Though me explaining coal engines to that one fellow probably had something to do with it." He said. Carrot Top sighed. "What are you going on about now?" "What your history? I took a small trip once I got the Tardis back up and decided to see what this place had to offer. Also I took a quick look around the universe and discovered that this place is exactly like my universe." He said. "Except for all the horses." He mumbled. "Please Turner, or whatever you prefer to be called." Carrot Top began. "Doctor." He said. "What?" Carrot Top asked. "My name, thats all you need to know. I am The Doctor." He said with a slight bow. "Thats not a name." She said "Oh thats not a name is it, well then whats your's then?" He asked. "My name happens to be Carrot Top." She said. "See, first and last." "Well, as well as that sounds I think 'The Doctor' is more suitable name than a vegetable part." He said. Carrot Top was baffled. "I had enough of this, leave my property right now or I'll fetch somepony who will do it for you." "Hey now, theres no need for that. I can go if thats what you really want me to." He said will checking a small, metal box he had in his hooves. The small beeping sound soon began coming from the box. "Oh, its close, really close." "Leave now." Carrot Top said. "I am going into town and if you're still hear by the time I get back I will fetch…." "Wait, shush." He said. Carrot Top shook her head in disbelief. "Excuse me? Did you really just…" He held his hoof up to silence her. "It's moving, wherever it is its not very far." He said before running back inside the box. "Well are you going to stand there or are you coming along?" He asked poking his head out. "Going where?" She asked. "Theres something here that your world shouldn't have in it and I am going to find out why. Now are you coming or not?" He asked. "What do you mean that our world shouldn't have?" She asked. "Get in and I'll explain." He said holding out his hoof. She looked at the box and began to question his motives. "I don't even know whats going on right now. You seem completely off your rocker. Theres not one good motive for me trying to help you when you've done nothing but annoy me. Besides it seems awfully small for two ponies to fit inside that thing." "Trust me, its really different one you step inside, now if you're coming then lets go." He said. Reluncly, she looked back at her house, then to him and back again. There was a spark inside he head that fought against all her common sense. It kept telling her to just go with him. "Why not." She shrugged. She stepped forward and trotted inside the box. Instantly she was in a large, odd looking room filled with blinking lights. It was huge, to huge to be the same place. Her mind rushed this had to be some illusion. She quickly stepped out to examine the box's walls. All solid wood and nothing expanding out of them. "Is there a problem?" He asked sticking his head out. Carrot Top gulped. "This box, how is it possible? It must be some kind of magic." "No magic at all I am afraid, just science. Also there is no such thing as magic its all just things that haven't been explained." He said casually. "But this has to be." She said peaking around to the inside. "Why?" He asked with a grin. "Cause it's bigger on the inside." She said. He chuckled. "After all this time and that still doesn't get old. Come on, no point of gauky at it all day we got things to do, ponies to see. Oh, I don't like that, I meant 'things to do, ponies to see'. See I didn't it again! Every time I try to say every…" He stopped himself and looked around. "I say pony, somepony, everypony, it's starting to freak me out a little." Carrot Top was still in aw of the box's contents. "Oh, come on then lets go." He said tugging her along. She watched as he went over to a panel of some kind and began fidgeting with things on it. The room itself had dull lighting but just enough to see everything. An invasion of circles was draped along the walls, providing the much needed light. "There we go fit as a fiddle, she should be good for all traveling needs." He said. "Mr. Turner?" Carrot Top began. He let out a heavy sigh. "If you want to ask me something, or even talk to me you must stop calling me that." "Oh, okay, Doctor right?" She asked. "See that's better, I feel better, it sounds cooler. Now what where you going to ask?" He asked. "This box, how can the inside be bigger than the outside? I know you've probably been asked before but how?" She asked. The Doctor pondered. "I'll put it into terms you'll understand, lets say you dropped a pebble into a small pond. It's going to create a little wave, a ripple. Then lets say you drop a second pebble immedialty after the first one. Tell me, which ripple is going to be larger? The first pebbles's or the second's?" "The first?" She answered. "Wrong, its the second." He said. Carrot Top frowned. "No, its the first." "Well to my perspective the second one is bigger, thus thats how this thing is bigger on the inside. I won't bore you with science just know that she can fly everywhere and whenever." He said. "This thing flies?" She asked. "Of course it does, its a ship after all. Takes me through time and space, and what not." He said. "Wait did you say time? Like this thing can travel through time?" She asked. "Yup thats right anywhere in history, though most of the history here is kind of a bitt off for my taste. Yes! That reminds me." He said checking something by the panel. "Ah, there you are you little slime bucket." "So we can go anywhere, right now?" She asked. The Doctor looked back at her. "Oh, right, um at the moment I am kind of tracking something down that shouldn't be here." "Thats right you were going on about something. What do you mean, something that shouldn't be here?" She asked. A beeping sound interrupted him. "There it is, its a zygon." "A what?" She asked. "No time to explain, act now!" He said pulling a lever. "Hang on, its a little bumpy when it's your first traveling in it." The whole place started to shake and a wheezing sound soon bellowed throughout. Carrot Top fell to the floor, desperately trying to find something hang on to. Before she could find something though it all stopped. "What in the world was that Doctor?" She asked once she got on her hooves. He was no where to be found. "Doctor?" She called out. "Doctor?" "Yes." his voice called out from bellow. "Be there in one sec." She stepped closer to get a good look at all the colorful things that were blinking on the panel. Was all this still real or was this all some wild dream. "There we are how do I look?" He asked reappearing. Carrot Top noticed the collar and red tie that he added to his neck. "Well thats something." She said. "Meh, its a favorite, we're here and we got ourselves a monster to hunt." He said grabbing her hoof and rushing for the door. //-------------------------------------------------------// Part 2: Cakes and Stuff //-------------------------------------------------------// Part 2: Cakes and Stuff "Ah, there we are." He said pushing the door up to it's original spot. "We're here." Carrot Top was shaking as she got back on solid ground. That was probably the single most terrifying experience she had ever witness in her life. "Something the matter miss Top?" The Doctor asked. "I'll be fine just give me a minute." She said. "Yeah, first time flying is always something, but you seem to be taking it very well. I remembered my first time, I was shaking and scared much like how you are right now." He said with a small chuckle. "You'll get use to it though. Now, let see if you're good as new." He said sliding something out from his collar. Reaching, he pulled out a small metallic object that looked like a pen of some kind. Though it was much more thicker and it had a small glass bulb at the end. "Ta-da." He said presenting it. "What is it?" She asked. "This madam is one of the finest instruments in the known galaxy. It can unlock any lock, door, and trap thats thrown my way. It can also register anything that I scan it with. It's a sonic screwdriver." He said with pride. He clenched it between his teeth and moved it around till it began lighting up, followed by a buzzing sound. "See." he muffled. "So it's like a wand of some kind?" She asked. He spat it back out. "No, no this is much better than any wand. Though it will take time getting use to using my mouth to operate it. So all better? Good! Cause we got ourselves a zygon on the loose." Carrot Top picked up the screwdriver for him. "A what?" He took the screwdriver and clipped it around his collar. "A zygon, big, puffy, pink alien that can shift it's apparecne into anything or any creature it wants." "Wait so it can change it's appearance, like a changeling?" She asked. The doctor frowned a bit from not knowing what she meant. "Sorry, I haven't had the pleasure of knowing theses 'changelings'. What are they and what do they do? Come now don't hold information from me!" "Well, there kind of like an insect creature. They can fly and they can trap there victims in this slime substance. The point I was making was that they too can change there appearance, but they do it for usually one purpose." She said. "This is weird, me teaching you something isn't it?" The Doctor smiled. "I know it's weird for me to, go on." "Well they usually find somepony that another pony loves or cares for deeply. Then they take the place of said pony and begin to feed of the others feelings. It's there food supply basically." She finished. "Huh, fascinating." The Doctor said. "That's scary close to a zygon but minus the whole feelings part." "So whats the big deal with this 'zygon thing' anyway? If it's not hurting anypony then why are we looking for it? She asked. "Cause nowhere else in this universe has a zygon been spotted except here. Nowhere else, no point in time of history has your galaxy every had a a zygonic spices. Till the other day when I turned on the ol' radar and it began picking up it's genetic code." The Doctor said. "That's why I want to go after it, to question it. How did it get here, where, how?" He said. "And maybe I can get back to my universe where he came into this one." He mumbled to himself. "So lets go." "Wait you said this thing can travel, so where did we go?" Carrot Top asked. It was to late, he was already whirling around the small place. "He doesn't skip a beat." She sighed. "I thought you said this thing can travel through time and space! All we did was move from my house to an alley in the center of town!" She said looking around. The Doctor stood at the end of the alley way. "I know, the zygon is in your town. Plus I needed the Tardis's radar to be able to project in the best spot possible." "So how are you going to catch this thing?" Carrot Top said joining him. "Thats a very good question, even if the radar that I patched together finds it its going to be very hard. Zygons are nasty creatures and don't do to well with others messing with their buiesness." He said taking out his screwdriver. "Though I am guessing that it is staying close to the center of town." Carrot Top looked at all the passing ponies faces "Why do you think that?" "Most tactical, place is aways busy, it can basically choose who it wants to be and snap." He said. "It could be anypony." She said. "That's what makes them scary, you spend your time around others and all of the sudden they could be a nasty alien." He said. "One second." He clenched the screwdriver in his mouth and aimed it around. "Though I know that it's in that shop over there at the moment." He muffled while pointing. "Oh, no." Carrot Top gasped. The Doctor looked at her. "What?" "That's Sugarcube Corner, I know the owners there. What if this thing is in there? I mean how dangerous is it? We have to tell them, come on!" Carrot Top said almost begging to run. She was pulled back by the Doctor. "Hey now listen to me. I promise that as long as I am here no harm is going to fall on to anypony. You got that, I promise. Now we can't just go rushing into the place. So lets go in calm and collective." He said walking towards the place. She reluctantly followed but the thought of something terribly going wrong lingered in her head. The two made it to the doors and before she could say something he rushed in. "So much for calm and collective." She said to herself. The place had a good amount of costumers, all waiting to pick up orders. Carrot Top tried getting the Doctor's attention but he was already at work. He went around at each pony eying them up and down. Soon he took out his screwdriver and began aiming it at each pony. "Morning Carrot Top." Mrs. Cake voice called. She was placing a load of boxes on the counter as she came into view. "56, 57, and 58!" She called out. The owners of the numbers quickly came and took they're items. Before they left though, each one was greater by the Doctor one last time. Scanning them, he obviously found nothing for he kept frowning. "The rest of your orders should be up in a few minutes everypony, sorry for the unusual wait." She said. "So what brings you in on this busy day Carrot Top?" "Busy? I mean no offense Mrs. Cake, but theres only 5 other costumers here now." Carrot Top said trying to keep an eye on the Doctor, who was now getting on everypony's nerves. "It's just been a long couple of days you know? The twins have fallen under a cold of some kind, and they've been crying around the clock. Today has been the only time where they seem to have gotten better but then Mr. Cake has also gotten sick. I told him to go to the doctor's yesterday. He finally went this morning, in fact he should be getting back any time now. So I had to get up extra early and put in double the work." She said. "It's not to hard but I'll manage." "Isn't Pinkie Pie around to help?" Carrot Top asked. Mrs. Cake shook her head. "Unfortunately she's off helping her friends or something, but don't worry dear I can manage by myself just fine." The Doctor rushed to the counter. "Excuse me did you say that your husband was sick?" "Well hello Mr. Turner, what brings you in?" Mrs. Cakes asked. "Actually it's just Doctor." He said. "Oh wow, I had no idea you had an official degree. Since when did you get that title Doctor Turner?" She asked. "Oh god, that worse than being called Turner." He mumbled before Carrot Top nudged him. "Your husband was sick was he?" "Yes, he had a fever and he went to the doctor's office, though it's quite all right I am sure." She said with a smile. "And the little ones also were suffering? Were they having trouble breathing, like how one does when smoke is in the room?" He asked. "Um, I guess? Though one can usually spot a stuffy nose when they dealt with them before." Mrs. Cake said sarcastically. "Right." The Doctor said turning around. "Mrs. Top, a moment please." He said heading for the door. "I'll be back later Mrs. Cake." Carrot Top said following after him. As soon as they were outside, The Doctor quickly whirled around. "That Zygon is using Mr. Cake as a disguise." "What!" Carrot Top exclaimed. "I mean how do you even know that?" The Doctor went and looked in the window. "All of them are normal, just plane ponies going about they're day. Yet only one could be it. I have connected the screwdriver to the Tardis's radar. If it had left the town or building I would have dictated it." He said examine his tool. "Mrs. Cake mentioned that her husband wasn't feeling well the other day, first the twins right? Thats usually a sign when a zygon is near, he must have been narrowing down a identify to have. Being near strange lifeforms, unknowing of the bacteria he could carry must have caused the sudden ill feelings. Though why a cake shop owner? Why not the mayor, or somepony besides a cake shop owner?" He said. "He's in near now and he is Mr. Cake." Carrot Top paced around neverously before responding. "This is all strange, I mean you said that we never had a creature like this in are universe. So why is there one here now? How did it get here?" She said bitting her lip. "Also notice how Mrs. Cake called you Turner to." "I haven't the slittiest clue about that, remind me to stop by this 'Turner's' house on the way back. As for the zygon getting here and now, I must confess the latter of which I don't now. The only thing I know is the faster we catch it the more answers we can get." He said trying to sound hopeful. "Now lets go catch us a zygon." "Right." Carrot Top said with a smile. The Doctor was about to say something until a loud bang rang out from behind the store. "What on earth was that?" He asked before taking out his screwdriver. A loud beeping noise was now ringing from like a pulse from the device. "It's the zygon, come on." He said grabbing Carrot Top by the hoof. The two raced to the other side of the building and stopped just short of turning the corner. Another noise proved that whatever was back there was still present. Swicthing something on the device, The Doctor gave Carrot Top a look that showed that he was about to take action. He slowly motioned his mouth to say 'one', 'two' and finally 'three'. Yanking both her and himself, they stepped into the clear view of the alleyway. "Oh hello Carrot Top what brings you out today?" Mr. Cake said causally. The Doctor nudged her to responded, she quickly gave him a look of frustration. "Oh, just out and about, doing somethings." She said. "And how do you do today Mr. Turner?" He asked the Doctor. The Doctor bit his lip. "I am doing quite fine myself sir, just stopping by to get some…stuff." "Oh, we got plenty of that here." Mr. Cakes said coughing a bit. "You feeling alright sir?" The Doctor asked. "Oh, quite alright just a little cold thats all. I've already been to a doctor and he told me that it would pass. Though the twins must have passed it on to me. For now they're all fine and I am the one who's suffering" He said jokingly. "Yeah, adjusting to an unknown atmosphere will do a number on the lungs." The Doctor mumbled. "Well we were just passing by and were about to be on our way. Weren't we Carrot Top?" "Right, we must be getting off now." She said agreeably. Mr. Cake nodded and started to head back inside. "Well come by sometime when you're not in a rush. We always are glad to have company." As soon as he was out of site the Doctor took out his screwdriver. He began examining the door that Mr. Cake had just gone through. "There it is." He said. "What?" Carrot Top asking examine the door as well. "There is traces of pony but also of something not of this world. Also there is a trace of something else here that I don't even know. That combined with the Tardis's radar means that the zygon has taken Mr. Cake's imagine for sure." He said. "But why? I mean Mr. Cake is not exactly the most powerful figure in the town?" Carrot Top asked. "Good question, what would a zygon have need for a small time business stallion. Unless something got his attention, something that screamed for him to take this pony's imagine." He pondered. "Well we have our victim, and we have the place. All thats left is to figure out how we are going to trap this zygon and find the real Mr. Cake." Carrot Top smiled for now she felt confident for the first time meeting him. "What would be the first course of action." "Simple, we go back to the Tardis and examine these readings. It might help us you know also acting now in broad daylight would just attract attention to ourselves." He said. "Well lets get going then." Carrot Top said heading back in the direction of the Tardis. The Doctor smiled. "Now you're getting the hang of it." //-------------------------------------------------------// Part 3: Facing Forward //-------------------------------------------------------// Part 3: Facing Forward "Well then, I say we set up a trap for the beast and capture it before it can slip away. God knowing what it might do if gets away from us. It could take days, weeks even to find it again." The Doctor said locking the Tardis doors. "But first things first, let analyze some DNA!" He said rushing over to the control panel. "There we are, look at you." "What? Whats happening?" Carrot Top said while looking on. "It's a zygon, no doubt about that but theres something else." He said looking at a screen. "Something that shouldn't be there, one second." With a few short movements and tugging at the controls, he waited anxiously for something. "There, thats it, what is that?" He said looking intensely at her and then back at the screen. "What? Whats is it?" She asked while coming to his side. "The DNA has been polluted, almost fused together with another creature's. Now, I am still a stranger to your world but it says that it is also this creature." He said pointing. "What is that." Carrot Top looked at the screen and quickly grew silent. Though she never seen one in her presence, she had heard and knew enough to know that there were in trouble. "Doctor, remember what I told you earlier about the changeling creature?" She asked. "Yes?" He asked with a concern tone to his voice. "Well that is a changeling if I ever saw one." She said. "Which means….of course!" "What!" The Doctor jumped. "If its a changeling that means its going after Mr. and Mrs. Cake relationship. Not only that but the love they had for they're children is also potentially food for it." She said. "Now hold on, the terminal also says that this thing is a zygon. If thats true than we are dealing with something that has been affect with something from your world. Thus its assumed that its a part of whatever its fused with." He exclaimed. Carrot Top sighed. "You lost me on that one." He stopped for a moment and began mumbling to himself. "We have to act and fast. If these creatures are as dangerous as you say, then we need to get it away from the rest of the Cake family. Also we need to find Mr. Cake as well, no telling where he's all hung up." Carrot Top thought carefully. "Where though, I mean he could be anywhere really. She said he wasn't feeling good and that he went to the hospital this morning. We should start there, and work our way back." "Thats a good start, so shall we beam right over there?" He asked heading for the door. "Of course you'll have to point the place out." "Right coming." She said trotting after him. The two went down the street and made there way to the hospital that sat by itself. Apoun arriving, The Doctor quickly made observations with his eye, not risking anything to happen. "It's followed us." He said slowly. "What?" Carrot Top asked turning around. The Doctor quickly grabbed her and forced her forward. "No don't look, it will know that we know and thats something it cannot know." "So what do we do? Are you sure its following us?" She asked. He smirked. "I know because its been following us ever since we left the cake shop. Once we got back to the Tardis the radar picked it up." "But wait, is it safe leaving your ship in the open like that? What if it got inside?" She asked. He chuckled. "Don't worry I locked it, snug as a bug. Even though that statement is odd. I mean really how snug can a bug be?" "Doctor." She said growing anxious. "Right, inside we go." He said moving forward. "It probably won't follow us inside, to close for comfort." Carrot Top lead him to the front desk where ponies checked in. The clerk smiled as the two came closer to her. "Hello, how can I help you today?" She asked. "Yes hello, I am The Doctor and this is Carrot Top. We were just here to ask a simple question about one of our dear friends who check himself in today." The Doctor said while glancing behind him. "Oh, are you visiting?" She asked. "Not really, we just wanted to know the symptoms he was having. You know? Just to be safe while around him." Carrot Top chimed in. "Oh, well I can look up why he checked himself in but I am not allowed to share cofidintal information. Also all imformation that he wishes not to be shared will not be repeated in front of others." She said pulling out a stack of papers. "What was you friends name." "Carrot Cake." The Doctor said. "Mr. Carrot Cake, his wife said that he wasn't feeling good so he came here this morning." The clerk rumbled though signatures and began growing a puzzled look on her face. She kept looking back and forth at the papers in the stack. "I am sorry but there is no record of Mr. Cake ever checking in. If he did come here he would have to sign at least one of these forms. Are you sure it was the today and not a while ago? I can check last weeks records for you if you like?" She asked. The Doctor pondered. "No, that won't be nessceary. Come Carrot Top we have something new to figure out." The two walked out of the front door and were soon standing in the cool autumn breeze. "So Mr. Cake didn't even make it to the hospital huh?" Carrot Top asked. "That means that he must have been taken somewhere along the road." "Maybe." The Doctor said half heartily. "Or Maybe not, there is something fishy going on here and I don't like it. Like I said before the zygon is following us and I think its now retreating. It's probably scared now that we know something is up. It couldn't have done it in town cause somepony would have noticed. So that leaves us with two options." "Which are?" Carrot Top questioned. "Either he was attacked right in front of this place or he never got a chance to leave the shop." The Doctor said. "Thats where we're going to find him." Carrot Top looked all around. "He's still right there in the shop!" "Exactly." The Doctor said. "Come, we have have somepony to find and theres no telling what that zygon is up to." The two began walking forward at a quick pace. "But Doctor, should we stop by the Tardis first? I mean do you have a plan on catching this thing we're after?" Carrot Top asked. "Haven't had a real thought about it actually now that you mentioned it." He said. "So should we formulate a plan or what?" Carrot Top asked. He shook his head. "Nah, I usually like to see where the situations takes me and then act." Carrot Top frowned. "So you just wing it?" "Yeah." He hesitantly said. "Great, so this zygon is dangerous you say?" She asked. "Eh, its not the worst thing in the universe. It's no dalek but its still a tuff customer. Though in this universe it is proboly the most dangerous thing that is living." He said very dry voiced. "I don't won't to worry you, but lets pick up the pace a little." "Don't worry?" She chuckled. "A strange pony lands in my back yard in a big blue box and then takes me along to find an 'alien' from another world. Trust me if I was worried I wouldn't have agreed to come with you." "So why did you come with me then. I was sure that you would have called the police or something for sure. Not that it would have mattered." He said with a grin. "I really don't know actually." She paused. "It was just an impulsive action I guess." "Well then, in the future maybe try not to jump the gun. Not all ponies who crash in your backyard in strange boxes are friendly you know?" He said jokingly. His screwdriver was begging to beep causing both to stop in there tracks. They had just gotten to the center of town and almost nopony was around. The sun had already been deciding into the sky, it created long and dark shadows. "Whats that all about now." The Doctor said taking a look at the tool. " Calm down, theres nothing that is around……us." He said while looking around. "Miss Top." "Yes Doctor?" She asked. "We're going to the Tardis right now." He said very slowly and calmly. She noticed his behavior. "Something wrong?" "It's here." He said. "And from the readings, its close." The two slowly made there way to were the big blue box stood. The Doctor quickly opened the door and escorted Carrot Top inside. As soon as he locked the door a huge thud stroke from the outside. It sent Carrot Top's heart racing. "Was that the zygon?" She asked. "Yes." The Doctor said making his way to the control panel. "If I can just isolated the flow, then reconnected it to the tracker I will be able to track it anywhere." "But can it get in here, I mean those doors are made of just wood right?" She asked as another loud knock came across. "Nonsense, those doors are shielded. There is nothing in this known galaxy that can break through them." He said. "Now I have linked the DNA sample we got earlier to the the radar. So now wherever are friend goes, we can follow it." Another knock, this time much louder came across. "O! Do that again and I'll make you sorry you hear me!" He shouted at the door. "You also better not have done anything to that fellow you replaced or else you'll answer to me. Trust me, I won't be happy if he has come to harm." He had walked over to the door by the time he was finished. There was no response, no knocking, just silence. "Well then I guess he ran off then." He said returning to the panel. "Now we're cooking, we can now see where he is heading." A map appeared on one of the screens. Carrot Top instantly became fascinated with it, how many other wonders did this place have in store. The Doctor looked over it, studying it until he took a deep breath. "So he has returned to the home huh? Well then looks like we're going to make a late night visit to the Cake family. First though before I forget about it, we need a plan on getting in. I wouldn't like Mrs. Cake or the twins to witness the interactions between us and the zygon." He said. "Thats going to be difficult then, I mean that things ready for us. Shouldn't we suspect that he knows that we're coming for him?" Carrot Top asked. "He could." The Doctor said while pondering. "Then we shall come in an the most unexpected way that he would never see coming." He quickly ran over to the control panel with a wild smile on his face. With a few switches and a slight pull on the lever the place started to rumble. "Doctor?" Carrot Top exclaimed while trying to find something to hold on to. "What are you doing." He let out a laugh. "If he's waiting for us to come through the front door then we'll just show up right in the middle of the place. Hold on, we'll be there shortly. Actually we'll be there in a couple of hours!" The place jolted and slowly started to settle back down. Carrot Top was still shaking as the Doctor went over to the door. "Still in one piece." He said with a hint of relief. Carrot Top stood up. "Excuse me!" "Nothing we're here." He said with a smile. "Lets go catch us an alien." //-------------------------------------------------------// Part 4: Right-O //-------------------------------------------------------// Part 4: Right-O "What in the world was that for?" Carrot Top asked as the Doctor closed the door to the Tardis. "What? We needed a way in and this was better than just knocking on the front door. On the other hoof too, we skipped a couple of hours so maybe he isn't standing by now." He said. "And don't worry, there is a solid fifteen percent chance he didn't hear us." "Fifteen?" She asked angrily. "Hey now thats a lot, with that amount theres a chance we came in undetected." He said trying to act smoothly. "There's also a eighty five percent chance that he knows that we're here and that he's now waiting for us." She said sarcastically. He took a look around before taking out the screwdriver. "Lets see where you are." Carrot Top guessed that they had to be in the basement, for there were shelves with tons of crates. Each one had a item name written on them but to her surprise none where cooking items. Thanks to the inner light of the Tardis she was able to see all around the room. Her eyes fell to a set of stars leading up to the rest of the building. "We're not in Sugarcube." She said. "Well of corse not, that would be wasting our time." The Doctor said. "No point of going there, no we're at the Cake's residence." Carrot Top became alarmed. "Wait this is they're house!" "Not so loud." He said trying to hush her. "We can't just go walking into somepony's house." She said very angrily. "Listen, I for one agree with that statement. However, when that pony's house harbors a dangerous alien that can do god knows what kind of destruction, I think we can wave the rule of politeness just this once. All we're here for is the zygon, just in and out. It will be like nopony was even here." He said trying to calm her down. "Besides the radar showed that he came back here instead of the cake shop so what else was I suppose to do?" "Its just I don't feel comfortable snooping around somepony's house. Can't we try to lure the thing outside somehow?" She asked. "I am all ears." He said placing his hoof on the stairs. Carrot Top paused for a moment, trying to think of a way that they could get the creature away from the rest of the family. Turning around she eyed the Tardis. Then it came to her, almost like a bolt of lighting. Apparently the Doctor also began picking up on her attentions. "Oh, no." He said. "It would work." She said. "Still, letting that thing on the Tardis is already asking for trouble." He said taking a step towards her. "But it would be a lot safer than just trying to get it in the house or luring it outside. Think, if it got outside then it can sift to anypony. We can trap it here and we know where it would be." She said. "Even if we did get it on board, have you ever thought about what if it got loose then? The Tardis is infinite. It could literally roam around on my ship for ages. Not to mention put me in danger where I rest my head." He said growing concerned. "Well it's a better plan than whatever you got." She said. He paused for a moment. "Okay you got me there, but I still am not on board with this." "Whats the worse that could happen?" She shrugged. Instantly his face was within touching distance with her's. "There are many things that could go wrong miss Top. For one a zygon isn't a dumb animal that you can train to do tricks. It is an intelligent being that can easy abuse the abilities of the Tardis. If it got a hold on that technology it could rewrite you're entire history. There would be a complete meltdown of this universe, creating a hellish nightmare that I for one have seen firsthoof." He stopped for a moment. "There it is again I said 'first hoof' instead of….anyway the point I was making was that if we did try to trap it on the Tardis it could go catastrophically for us if it got loose in there." He went back and placed his hoof on the Tardis door. "I've seen what could happen if somepony abuses this power, and I worry about it every night." Carrot Top felt a little sad that she even brought the idea up. "I am sorry Doctor." "Don't be." He said. "Cause we're going to trap it in there!" She jumped at the rise of his voice. "Wait, but you just said that…" "I know but that just makes the stakes higher then right? If you are wrong and it all goes to ruin then I get to say you did it" He said charging towards the stares. "Come on then, lets go wake the beast from slumber." Carrot Top stood there for a second, not knowing how to responded to the sudden outburst. "Doctor wait!" Before she could stop him, he had already flung open the door and was now standing in the Cake's kitchen. He went over to the cabinets and began emptying them out. "What on earth are you doing?" Carrot Top said while picking up items. "Creating curiosity." He said. "But you don't have to make a mess of things." She said. "No, but it is more fun." He said causing more noise. Then right as she was about to answer there was a small thud that came from above. She glanced over to the Doctor who was now looking more serious. "There it is." He said. "What?" She asked. "You're eighty five percent." He said with a smile. "Though I would suggest that you come over here by me." As soon as she made her way toward him a sound of hooves knocking against wood began ringing out. It got closer and closer until a pair of eyes were visible. "Who's there." Mrs. Cake's voice called out. "I am warning you I'am armed." The Doctor took out his screwdriver and was about to activate it till Carrot Top stood in front of him. "Mrs. Cake." She spoke. "What? Carrot Top is that you?" She asked. "Good heavens what are you doing in my house? In fact how did you get into my house?" "Top." The Doctor said tugging at her. She ignored him. "Sorry but this is going to sound weird but I feel that you are in danger." "Danger? From what?" Her voiced asked. The screwdriver was lighting up. "Top!" The Doctors voice rose. "Wait whose there with you and whats that blue light?" Mrs. Cake asked. Before the Doctor could say something Carrot Top spoke without thinking. "Don't worry its just me and The Doctor." "The Doctor?" She asked. Carrot Top nodded. "Yes, now quickly we need to….." "The Doctor?" She repeated. The Doctor placed himself in front of her. "I don't think we're talking to Mrs. Cake anymore." He said. "Doctor." A deep and strange voice said. Carrot Top jolted at the sudden change. She never heard anything like it, it was deep and yet high pitched. Either way, her body began shivering. "There was nothing wrong with Mr. Cake at all was there? No trip to the hospital, though he probably did suffer but not because of a fever." The Doctor said. "It tricked us into thinking that we had made a mistake but we were just looking at the wrong pony." "Wait so it wasn't Mr. Cake?" Carrot Top asked. "No dear." Mrs. Cakes voiced called out again. "It was me!" Suddenly, in the light of the screwdriver, a strange looking creature came forth. It's skin was pinkish, mixed with grey though the pink dominated the latter of the two. It had what seemed to be small craters along it's skin, each on prturdgue inwards. The Doctor started to move slowly towards the basement door. "What are you?" He asked. "You're neither a zygon or this other thing? It's like you a mixture of both but how?" The creatures face now came into the light as Carrot Top shuffled along with the Doctor. It had nasty little thangs that hanged from its mouth. The eyes were sharp green while resting on a layer of black. There also was an insect quality to them. "I am what you made me, Doctor." It spoke. Carrot Top reached the door as the Doctor stopped in place. She glanced at him and saw that the look on his face was pure shock. "I what?" The Doctor asked. The creature started to laugh malcisoly. "Tell me." The Doctor said. The creature said nothing. "TELL ME!" The Doctor snapped. "I can't." It replied. "Why not?" The Doctor said as Carrot Top opened the door. "Because we can't remember our past just like how we don't know the future." It said. "Doctor!" Carrot Top sad. "Right." He said pushing her into the darkness of the basement. As the creature leaped forward, The Doctor quickly slip behind the door slamming it shut. "Listen, get in the Tardis and go to the right. There should be some stairs, head down there about half way. I am going to lure the creature as close to the control panel as possible. If I can pull this off I can capture it without doing any harm to it. Promise me though, that if anything goes wrongs that you'll exit the Tardis immedialty. Then forget everything that you have seen, everything to do with me. Got it?" He said pointing his screwdriver at the lock on the door. "There, that should by me some time." "Yes Doctor." She said. "But I know its not going to have to come down to that." He smiled tiredly. "Lets hope so, now go!" She did as she was told, and quickly ran towards the Tardis. Once the door was open the Doctor began running right after her. Instantly, she ducked inside and began climbing down the set of stairs. The Doctor came charging in and began messing with the control panel. She watched as he frantically pulled out a wire with his teeth and placed it on the ground a little ways behind him. "Okay, lets see what you can do then." He said turning his back to the door. Carrot Top notice the front door of the Tardis was left wide open. She was about to say something but the creature poked it's head in. It was a weird shaped head, smooth at first but then it curved like a pickle. Now that it was in the light it was even more grotesque. It had a smilier body to a changeling though there wasn't any holes in its hooves. There also were insect like wings present on the beast, who had now gotten closer to the Doctor. It's skin though was the strange part, it was a mixture of reddish, pinkish, then swirled with grey. "So, this is you huh? A mixture of two different species but how? How did you get you're DNA mixed with another creature on this planet?" The Doctor said obviously trying to buy time for whatever he was planning. The create laughed. "I….don't…..remember." It gargled. "Well you have to remember something, not like you just appeared out of thin air." He said flipping a switch. "I…..don't…..though…..this is a……Tardis." It said looking around. The Doctor stepped back. "Yes and guess what? You're trapped here!" He said while spinning around. He pulled a lever that sent sparks flying everywhere, followed by an awful noise. The creature tried to leap forward but was being held by some invisible force. It clawed desperately, but all efforts proved to be of no use. The Doctor let out a laugh. "It work! It actually work! Miss Top its okay now, you can come out. This ugly thing isn't going anywhere." He said inviting her over. She slowly made her way towards him, making sure to avoid getting near the creature. It tried leaping at her but once again it failed to move an inch. The Doctor got close to it, studying it's structure. "Just look at it." He said. The creature collapse to the floor. "What…did you…do?" It spat. "Nothing really, just used the Tardis's shield system as a cage. I could take the time to explain all the kinks and stuff but I'll just simplify it for you. I took the shield energy from the Tarids and made it into a box to trap you inside. There, now isn't that clever or what?" He asked Carrot Top. She smiled. "I am just glad we got this thing before it could hurt anypony. Though there is one more question." She said turning to the monster. "Where is Mrs. Cake?" The creature made no response. "Answer the nice question dear zygon." The Doctor said. It still gave no response, much to the frustration of both of them. "I'll give you to the count of four, then things are going to get heated." The Doctor said. "One." "The structure…." It said. "Two." The Doctor said timidly. "The structure where……." It tried saying quickly. "Three." The Doctor said walking towards the control panel. "The structure where the lifeforms conduct business." It said whimpering. "The cake shop?" The Doctor asked. "Yes…..in the place……where they keep their supplies." It said It started to breath heavily, and then it began screaming in agony. The Doctor pulled his screwdriver out and examined the creature. A troubled look came over his face. "No, no, no, no." He said trying to find something on the control panel. "What? Whats happening?" She asked. "I don't know how, but somehow all the cells are collapsing at one. Literally, they are dissolving into a mass of nothing." He said. Carrot Top tried connecting the dots. "It's dying?" He looked at her. "Yes!" "Well can't you do something? What if it's lying about the location?" She asked growing worried. "I……swear its the truth Doctor." It said. The Doctor stopped what he was doing and went over to the beast. "Tell me! Where did you come from? How did you come to be? Did you follow me into this universe? Tell me!" "I……..was……..memories…..will burn." It mumbled. A strange glow began taking over the creature. "What will burn what?" The Doctor asked. It stood up very quickly. "Your memories will burn this universe." It said clearly and with a dark tone. The Doctor froze. "Doctor!" Carrot Top exclaimed as the creature's glow began growing brighter. With an instant the creature was now gone, out of sight and out of reality. The Doctor just stood there, not saying a single word. Carrot Top turned to him and saw the confusion on his face. "Doctor? What happen to it?" She asked. He just kept silent. "Doctor?" She asked nudging him. "I don't know." He finally said. "I really don't know." "Doctor I hate to sound bothersome but Mrs. Cake." She said. He looked at her, snapping back into his old self. "Right." He said heading to the control panel. With a flick of the switch the place began to rumble again. As it went on he took the wire back up and reopened the panel. After some moments, he had place the wire back inside. When they came to a stop he galloped out of the Tardis. Carrot Top trotted after him. He pulled back some crates and then out of frustration he began opening supply boxes. Carrot Top also followed the corse of action on the opposite side of the room. "Gotcha." His voice rang. Then, much to her relief he was cradling Mrs. Cakes. She was covered in some sort of green slime substance, though it was falling off rapidly. "She's weak, but I want to get her home as soon as possible." He said caring her into the Tardis. "Come miss Top." He quickly transported them back to the Cake's residents and took Mrs. Cake to the couch in the living room. Before leaving he scanned her her with his screwdriver and apparently he was relieved from what he saw. Quietly the two got back into the Tardis. "So, her shot term memory has been wiped by the beast. Though I wish it wasn't so, I cannot not argue with the results." He said. Carrot Top paused. "So she won't remember anything that happen between her and the zygon?" "Yes." He answered. "Though I wouldn't call that thing a zygon for sure. That's getting ahead of myself, theres one more thing to address." "That is?" Carrot Top asked. "Taking you home." He said. "Wait? What?" She asked angrily. "What, I was going to say thank you for helping me and all. I mean I don't think its smart to get inside a strange box, with a madpony. I told you that from the begging. Besides, I am sure you have other things going on in your life and I have work to do." He started to go on before being cut off. "Listen her buddy. I don't care if you're a doctor, professor, or just plain mad. Tonight you showed me something that I'll never fully understand and I don't want to probably. You crashed into my garden and then asked me to come along to help you find a monster that I never heard about. Then after succeeding you just go and drop me off and be on your merry way?" She asked getting in his face. "That was the plan." He said. She steamed. "No sir, you owe me. My time has been wasted if all you were going to do was drop me off and then just leave." He chuckled. "Well time is irrelev-." "Stop that." She said. "Now, you said that this can travel anywhere? Show me then. Show me that this thing can travel the stars like you said. Show me it can fly into the sky." The Doctor was at a loss of words. "Are you sure." She nodded her head. "Okay then." He flipped a switch and after a short rumble, he went to the door. Peaking it open, he motioned for her to come over. She eventually poked her head out of the door and the sight almost made her mouth hang open. There before her laid all the star and planets of the galaxy. All the classes she went through talked about such things but never had she ever thought of seeing it like this. Each star burned brightly, while the colors of lights danced all around the vast majority of space. In the distance she could see small spheres that were distinct in color and size. Some she recognized from her old books, some though were strange and alienated. She was taken away at this. Suddenly, a great flaming sphere whirled past the Tardis, travailing in a single direction. The sudden movement almost made her fall right out of the ship and into the void of space. Luckily, she was pulled back by the Doctor. "Convinced now?" He asked. "Where are we?" She asked. "The riz galaxy." He answered. "It's the one galaxy in your universe where all the planets and stars are so close that you can see them all if you stand right." He pointed to a small, pale looking sphere. "See that?" "Yeah." She said. "Though barely, its so small." "Thats where you lot live." He smiled. "On that tiny little rock of a planet. Though it is cozy." "Thats my home?" She asked. "Yeah, strange isn't it? We think of ourselves as big important beings. In reality though we are all just so tiny." He said. "Thats kind of scary." She said. "Well like I said we are all tiny." He said. "But you can see it all right? I mean you can go here and there in a split second. Everything can be observed just by flipping a switch, how do you handle it? Seeing all this and just stay so calm about? I never thought of seeing something like this." She said. He looked onward "Was this what you wanted to see?" "More than I could ever dream of." She said. "Is there more out there, like this I mean." "More than anything you could comprehend." He smiled. "I want to see it, all of it." She said. He stepped back for a second. "So you want to see everything huh?" He asked. "Yes." She said turning around to him. "I want to see all those other places down there, out there." "The Tardis also travels through time, remember." He said. "Then I'll will want to see that too then." She said with a smile. "You'll won't be abel to return to a plain life you once had. Once you traveled through the universe, everyday life gets really boring." He warned. "I'll just have to enjoy the memories then." She said. "All right then Mrs. Top. If you're so willing to travel through space and time then you'll choose where to go first. Anywhere and anyplace is a just a blink away. An adventure hiding behind every corner. Though it will be dangerous." He said. "I am ready for anything." She said. "Right-O." He said closing the door. "Where to Mrs. Top?" She pondered for a moment. "Lets start somewhere simple, lets go to the moon." "Ah excellent, a great big ball of rock instead of ancient times." He said sarcastically. "I said start somewhere simple then work up to the big things." She said. He laughed. "Oh but there is no such thing as simple when you travel with me. I do thrown in an occasional twist here and there, just to keep you on your hooves." With a bound he leaped to the control panel and began messing with buttons. "Ready?" "Ready." She said. "Here we go." He said. With that the Tardis roared and was off. "So time will turn for now, but soon it will all burn." Author's Note Well tis the end of this tale.
