Fluttershy, Fluttershy, Fluttershy can hardly fly!
Fluttershy, Fluttershy, Fluttershy can hardly fly!
Fluttershy, Fluttershy, Fluttershy can hardly fly!
Fluttershy, Fluttershy, Fluttershy can hardly...
"AAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!"
Fluttershy awoke, bolting upright in her little cloudy bed, panting and gasping for breath. Droplets of sweat ran down her face, mixing with the small flow of tears streaming from her wide, terrified teal eyes. Her chest puffed out and in, as she panted heavily, greedily drawing in huge breaths of air.
A moment later, the sound of knocking at her bedroom door, which was muffled due to the door being made of clouds, interrupted the little filly's episode. Fluttershy's attention was turned to the door as it opened up just enough for a familiar stallion's head to peek in.
"Fluttershy, sweetie? Is everything okay in here?", asked Dreamscape, her father, in a kind but worried tone. "I thought I heard you shouting?"
Fluttershy had quickly used her long pink mane to wipe away her tears just before her father poked his head into her room, and with her bedroom being so dark, save for the little bit of moonlight shining through the fluffy white window near her bed onto the floor, he didn't see the tear stains beneath her eyelids. Fluttershy took in a deep breath, and answered her father. "Um...No, daddy, er, everything's all, um, everything's alright..."
Dreamscape raised an eye. "Are you sure, sweetie?"
Fluttershy nodded her head rapidly. "Yes, daddy. I'm sure."
Dreamscape looked at his dear little girl for a few moments, before closing his eyes and nodding slightly. "Okay, Fluttershy," he said softly. "If you're certain there's nothing wrong. Go on back to sleep, dear. You have to be up early tomorrow for Flight Camp."
Fluttershy's face fell upon hearing those last two words. Those two words she dreaded more than anything else so far in her life - Flight Camp. But she quickly regained her composure and managed to give her father a fake smile. "O-okay, daddy. Goodnight, daddy."
Dreamscape smiled warmly at his daughter. "Goodnight, sweetheart."
And with that, he whipped his head out of the gap in the doorway, and closed it behind him. Fluttershy waited for a minute, just until she was sure that her father had returned to the warmth and comfort of his bed, back beneath the sheets with his wife, and her mother. When she was sure her father was gone, Fluttershy quietly climbed out of her bed, and began to pace up and down across the floor.
One of the advantages of living in a house made of clouds is that you never had to worry about making too much noise. You didn't need to worry about waking up your parents while you were worrying over the events that would transpire the next morning at the dreaded Flight Camp. Cloudy floors didn't creak or groan when you stepped on them, unlike wooden floorboards of those houses that Unicorns and Earth ponies lived in far down below the city of Cloudsdale.
Fluttershy's mind was racing as that cruel taunting rhyme repeated itself over and over again in her little head, hundreds of voices belonging to a multitude of colts and fillies laughing and repeating that awful chant over and over again. The image of their wicked grins and expressions looking at her, watching her, entered her trail of thoughts, and she nearly screamed.
"I don't want to go to Flight Camp tomorrow," the little yellow filly whispered to herself, as she trotted over to a bookshelf. She reached out and took a little toy bunny from the shelf, and held it in her hooves, staring down into its big button eyes. She sat herself upon her haunches as she held the toy close to herself.
"All those mean kids will be there, waiting to laugh at me and make fun of me again, just because I'm not as strong a flyer as they are," she told the emptiness of the room. "I don't want to be made fun of again. I don't like it."
She pressed the toy bunny tightly to her chest. While Fluttershy didn't want to go to Flight Camp the next day, she also didn't want to have to leave the place just because of the children there making fun of her poor flying skills. She liked the teachers there. They didn't make fun of her like the kids did. And she didn't want to leave her only friend, Rainbow Dash, either. Rainbow didn't make fun of Fluttershy for her inability to fly like the rest of the pegasi, and she even stood up for the little timid filly on a few occasions.
But Fluttershy didn't want her only friend to have to keep sticking up for her all the time. Fluttershy felt that it was something of a burden, a nuisance to her friend that she had to keep helping Fluttershy out whenever some colt or filly decided to approach her and taunt her about her weak wings.
If only she could be more like Rainbow Dash, maybe then Fluttershy could finally stand up to those mean ponies herself.
Maybe even teach that one colt a lesson...
That one colt who was responsible for starting the whole insulting chant to begin with...
Fluttershy narrowed her eyes as she saw that colt in her mind. She saw him, as clearly as though he was in the room with her - his brown coat, his messy purple mane and tail, and his nasty green eyes.
Wind Streak. That was the colt's name. It was he who had started the whole thing. He was the one who came up with the cruel rhyme in the first place, who had encouraged the other kids at Flight Camp to utter it in unison whenever Fluttershy was asked to demonstrate her wing strength, or any of the other flying activities and exercises. Yes, it was his fault that Fluttershy had such a hard time there at that place.
Just then, a memory came into her head, as she was immediately reminded of something that Rainbow had said to her a while ago, when the rainbow-maned filly had come to comfort her in the restrooms one particularly bad day.
"Oh, Rainbow! I can't go back out there! They'll just keep teasing me again!"
"Ya know, Fluttershy, you'll have to come out of here sooner or later."
"I can't, Rainbow! I won't!"
"Fluttershy, we're in the Colt's restroom. We're girls, not boys, in case you didn't know?"
"....oh...."
"Look, Fluttershy. I know you don't like being teased by those kids, but you're gonna keep getting teased by them for the rest of your life unless you grow a pair and stand up to them."
"G-grow a pair?"
"Yeah! Grow a pair and stand up to them! Don't let them push you around like some kind of toy! Like me! I don't let anypony make fun of me and get away with it!"
"You don't get teased...because you always, um, 'grow a pair', Rainbow Dash?"
"Exactly! Now you're getting it!"
"So, um...does that...does that mean...I won't be bullied if I become a boy?"
"Er....Wait, what?"
"If I 'grow a pair', I mean?"
"Oh for the love of Celestia, Fluttershy...That's not what I meant by...(sigh) Never mind..."
And as that thought of realization sunk in her mind, Fluttershy knew what she had to do in order to end the bullying, once and for all...
"I have to take Rainbow's advice," she muttered to herself, now clenching her toy bunny firmly in her hoof. "I have to 'grow a pair'..."
Strengthened by a new resolve, Fluttershy, still grasping the little toy bunny in her hoof, got up from her haunches and went back over to her bed. As she pulled the warm, soft sheets over her little form, she smiled deviously as she snuggled her head into her soft could pillow, holding her toy close to her chin, her eyes closing slowly as a sudden wave of weariness swept over her.
Tomorrow, Wind Streak would be introduced to Fluttershy's 'new pair'...
And so, the next day, at Flight Camp...
THE END (?)
