Her breaths were shallow and she was gasping frantically for breath. Her legs were ready to give out from the continuous running but she had to keep going. Salvation lie only 100 yards away, an easy distance for her. However, two factors were hindering her performance: The large gaps in the rooftops she was in and the pack of undead at her heels. She was used to life after the incident but she had just been reaped as a runner yesterday. This was the least ideal task to be reaped into, but it was necessary to maintain a strong border.
The mare pounced across one of the gaps, sending some of her pursuers to their deaths. She was now panicking as she saw the pack closing in on her to both of her sides. She side stepped and unsheathed a knife, running it along the undead mob. She drew it out from one and rolled onto a panel of metal to her left. She got back to her feet and resumed her sprint, stopping at a building gap. The mare leaped and struggled onto the wall, eventually throwing herself over the side. There she lay, gulping down oxygen and panting heavily. A phone slid out of her pocket and she dialed in her boss' number. The line got to voice mail and she picked herself back up from the concrete floor.
She leaped down from the perch and began to jog to her destination; the tall building breaching the skyline. She had finally calmed down when a loud crash startled her awake. An epileptic mob of shambling ponies burst through the wall like a storm of massive ants. The mare didn't even have time to begin running as a zombie slammed into her side, knocking the wind out of her. With a flick of her wrist, a blade extended from her forehoove. She stabbed the silver knife into the screaming, dirty pony. She tossed the cadaver onto its side and stumbled back to her hooves in an attempt to resume her original pace.
She had chosen to carry two weapons, a handgun and a knife. She had already used the ammo for her pistol, and any other chance of ammo was scarce. Her life was lived like just that, scarce. She starved, got sick, got beat up, and had the infected, too. Any gleam of hope was nonexistent, let alone something that could be hoped for. After all, hope was all but lost, and hope for a cure was just plain stupid. Any pony with half a brain in their head knew we were doomed. Celestia an Luna were gone, and the element bearers were all infected know. Now, it was just surviving. There was no emotional depth, no resistance to the urge to kill. As she saw it, she was no better than a member of the infected.
She shook gently, shedding some of the blood and sweat off of her. The mare brought a hoove to her forehead and wiped her brow. She galloped at an impossible pace, running to the building that towered above the skyline. the grimy sweat that completely covered her body had caused her glasses to fog up so in result she had hastily slapped them off. She came to a halt at a corner, two infected blocking her way. She charged at one, and knocked him into the other. They stumbled backwards, giving her a window to recover and kick one off of the ledge, followed by a sickening thud. The other one clawed at her, but she evaded it and stabbed it in the abdomen. She heard the shrill, monotonous shriek of the mob behind her grow closer. Her body told her to shut down and accept her fate, but she was not willing to go down without at least attempting to escape.
Her breaths were shallow and her vision was clouded with tears. Her body ached and burned from the continuous sprint, yet she would surely perish if she faltered. She stumbled briefly, and dropped her handgun. She rushed back to get it, pistol whipping one of the undead in the nose. She felt bone shatter, thus promptly turning around and sprinting again. The infected made a clicking noise and tore after her, with a look of pure hatred and rage in its eyes. She sidestepped and stabbed the zombie in the throat, watching as it tried to breathe through the pain. With pity in her eyes, she turned around and continued running. She finally reached a landmark, the bridge. It was a massive steel bridge that spanned to her destination. She sighed with relief and tears flooded her eyes as she realized that she would be safe soon.
Her calm demeanor was destroyed by a massive roar, scattering the infected. The entire bridge began to rumble and quake rhythmically. A massive, bloated infected covered in open red wounds began to rumble towards her at a disturbing pace. The mare shot twice with her handgun, each bullet landing in the monster's face. She desperately began to pounce away from her attacker, resulting in a massive hoove wrapping around her hind leg. She screamed and desperately stabbed at the beast with her knife. The horrible, ungodly abomination opened it's gaping maw, and chomped down on her neck. She gasped for breath, but she ended up gurgling on her own blood. Her body went limp, life faded out of her eyes, and the run was over.

I adjusted the small knob on the top of my scope, focusing on one of the carriers. I slowly slid the bolt of the rifle till a bullet was loaded. I focused on the red mare, aiming for her head. My finger tensed on the trigger and I fired a round into her skull. The carrier dropped to the floor instantly, killed in a millisecond. I sighed as I wondered how the world got so bad, even a small mare could turn into a mindless drone, attempting to devour anything with a pulse. I closed my eyes, and fired. The shot flew across the distance, landing in the creatures neck. After a small stumble, the mare fell over and died.
