Rarity let out a hefty sigh as she brushed through her deep purple hair. It was Monday, which to Rarity was simply the start of another boring week. She looked in the mirror dreamily, thinking about her dream last night. Some handsome boy was trying to sweep her off her feet, and it sure as buck wasn’t her boyfriend Big Macintosh, or “Mac” for short. After she snapped out of her daydream, she looked at the clock and gasped.
“Oh my! I’m certainly going to be late!” She rushed out of her house with her breakfast in hand. Her purple car hummed to life as Rarity put the key in the ignition. She drove as fast as she dared, which was quite a bit above the speed limit, to Ponyville High School.
“Eh, what a name,” she thought to herself for the thousandth time since she was a freshman here. It was named after the town she lived in, but she thought the town’s name itself was ridiculous. With five minutes before the bell, Rarity stood at her locker, on the opposite end of the school, grabbing her books for first few classes. Just before she shut her locker, she glanced at the picture of her and her friends: Twilight Sparkle, Applejack, and Pinkie Pie. She slammed her locker door closed and ran off to homeroom.
Rarity’s friends were all already there as were most of the other people in the class. She looked around looking for one person in particular. She let out a heavy sigh upon not seeing the girl she was looking for.
“Good,” Rarity thought. “Maybe she’s out sick today.” Just then, Rainbow Dash walked into the room with that strut of hers. Rarity let out a quiet groan. “Spoke too soon.” Rarity hated Rainbow Dash with the burning passion of her heart. Actually, she hated everyone like Rainbow Dash too. Some people tried to call her homophobic, but she didn’t care. She never tried to deny it; she didn’t like gay people. However, today Rainbow Dash was not alone. Following behind her like a lost puppy, was a very small-looking boy. He had short pink hair with long bangs, deep teal eyes, and a light tan. He was wearing a buttercream yellow sweater that was covered in butterflies. Rarity felt herself unwittingly raise an eyebrow. Was this boy gay too? He must be a new student, though, because Rarity had never seen him before. Ponyville High was small enough for Rarity to know everyone. The only open seat was the one behind Rarity, so the boy slid into that desk right before the bell rang.
“Alright, class, take a seat or I’ll be forced to spray you with pepper spray.” Rarity heard a small “eep” come from behind her. Mrs. Cheerilee was always saying things like this.
“It looks like we have a new student joining us today. Would you like to introduce yourself?” The boy looked up with eyes akin to a deer in headlights. “N-no, that’s ok, ma’am. I’d prefer not to.” The boy had a really high voice, almost feminine.
“Will you at least tell the class your name?” Now the boy was hiding behind his bangs.
“Um… I’m Fluttershy,” his voice got quieter as he reached the end of his sentence. Only Rarity could make out what he was saying, but Mrs. Cherrilee didn’t try to force him to say it again. The poor boy might have passed out if you asked him to. Mrs. Cherrilee went on with the typical morning babble about prom planning and fundraisers before the morning announcements came on. It was just more talk about what was for lunch that day, not like Rarity cared, and more crap about prom, which, now that Rarity thought about it, was only a month away. She would have to start making her and her friends dresses soon if she wanted them to look as fabulous as possible.
After the morning announcements were finished, the bell rang. Rainbow Dash, living up to her name, was out the door in an instant, with… Fluttershy? Rarity thought the name was ironic considering his behavior in homeroom. Walking out of the room, Rarity was met with her boyfriend Mac. He gave her a peck on the cheek, while Rarity put on her fake smile. In all honesty, she only liked him because he was a star football and basketball player. He was a gentle giant, though. He did the things most girls wish their boyfriends would do, but Rarity just wasn’t interested. Maybe that was why he did the things he did, he was trying to gain the affection he knew wasn’t there.
“Hey, uh, Rarity, do you think we could talk after school?”
“Sure, Mac, whatever you say. Have a good class ok?”
“Eeyup,” he smiled softly in a way only he could do. He sauntered off to his class as Rarity, no longer in a rush; sat down with the grace only she was capable of.
Rarity tried to take notes during that class period, but her mind was too focused on Fluttershy. Who was this new boy? Where did he come from? And why did he look so… effeminate? He had a look about him that made Rarity think he wasn’t gay, but she had learned not to judge based off of looks. Well, most of the time, anyways.
Rarity had two more classes, none with Fluttershy, before she had her lunch period. Rarity had to rush back to her locker to grab her lunch and get her textbooks for the second half of the day. Once she got back, she had nowhere to sit. Despite dating Mac, she really wasn’t that popular of a girl, unless someone wanted something from her. She had a reputation for being generous. Out of the corner of her eye, though, she noticed a small head of pink hair. Rarity followed the bobbing head and saw that Fluttershy was sitting by himself. Rarity couldn’t explain the feeling, but she felt her heart flutter.
“Well, now’s as good of a chance to talk to him as any,” she thought to herself. She strutted up to him and cleared her throat gently.
“Hello, um, Fluttershy, was it?” Fluttershy nodded. “Is it alright if I sit here?” Fluttershy just shrugged, his cheeks a flaming shade of pink. Rarity sat down, setting her lunch on the table.
“So, Fluttershy, where did you come from?”
“Um, I used to live in Canterlot, but I was homeschooled,” his voice could still barely be heard.
“CANTERLOT?!” Rarity’s face lit up with excitement. “Oh, I’ve always wanted to go to Canterlot! What’s it like? You must tell me everything about it!”
“Um, well, I don’t really like it, because I don’t like being around that many people. I’d rather be around animals, and there are no forests in Canterlot.” Rarity wasn’t really paying attention until something Fluttershy had said struck her.
“Wait, why were you homeschooled? Canterlot surely has a better school system in Ponyville.”
“I- well, um… It’s kind of hard to explain…” At this moment Fluttershy was, quite literally, saved by the bell. Fluttershy had darted out of the cafeteria before Rarity could blink. She looked up confused at the spot where Fluttershy had been sitting just a moment ago. She wondered what the boy was hiding.
“I will find out what that boy is hiding if it’s the last thing I do.”
