The Second Earth Pony Flyer
What's it like to fly?
"But why are you doing this Diamond!?"
"Like I told you Silver, let's see Scootaloo's reaction when even an Earth pony can fly!" Diamond Tiara grinned. "Come on, it'll be fun."
Diamond Tiara and her waifu Silver Spoon were walking down the street, heading to an open space where they could work in piece. "When we get this thing flying, we'll be the toast of the town! Nopony will be able to respect Scootaloo." With that sentence, they reached their destination, which already had a bunch of miscellanious parts strewn about. There was a rudder here, a pile of screws there, and a giant instruction manual, curtiousy of Twilight Sparkle, that would take probably two full grown stallions to lift.
"What are these for again Tiara?" Silver Spoon raised her eyebrows.
"These are the parts of our super flying contraption! With it, we can fly without the use of pegasi wings." Diamond Tiara declared, with a sense of satisfaction on her face.
"Alright Diamond... what do we do first?"
"I have no idea whatsoever!" Diamond Tiara's grin suddenly disappeared. "We're gonna need help... tons of it..."
Diamond and Silver then proceeded to go back to town, somepony there had to be good at this sort of thing. They knew they couldn't ask Rarity, Applejack, and Rainbow Dash, because they're their rival's siblings.
"Maybe someone at Sugarcube can help us? Engineers need to eat too you know." Silver suggested.
"Okay sweetie, sounds like a plan." So they headed to Sugarcube Corner. As they entered, they realized that the place was practically deserted. There was only Pinkie Pie manning the counter, and Hayseed Turnip Truck cleaning the windows. So they proceeded to trot up to the counter.
"Hey Ms. Pie, where is everypony?" Best fillies asked.
"Hi fillies! I don't know, they are all just doing fun things while I'm here bored! What are you up to?"
"Well Pinkie, we need help with a little... project... of ours and we're wondering if you knew somepony that could help us."
"It's your lucky day! I happen to be available to help you with anything you possibly need. Be it balloons, cake, confettii..."
"Engineering?" Diamond interupted.
"Why of course you silly filly!" Pinkie rubbed Diamonds head, nearly knocking her tiara off. "I know a couple of things about that. May I remind you who designed, built, and patented the one and only Party Cannon?" Pinkie pulled it out of thin air and fired a couple shots to make her point, which of course startled the fillies Hayseed Turnip Truck was too distracted by his reflection to notice.
Then the three earth ponies made their way back across town to create their machine, and show everypony what they were capable of doing. Everything was just as they had left it, with every part in their appropriate pile and the instructions unread and untouched.
"We have everything we need to make it, we just don't have the know-how."
"I see.." Pinkie grinned, "let's get to work." Through the magic that can only be known as Pinkie Pie, she pulled out three hard hats, one adult mare sized and two specially made for filly builders. There were no questions asked on how she got these.
They worked all through the night, Pinkie having enough foresight to have lamps attached to their hats. As they wiped away the sweat and grease from their foreheads, they dusted their hooves, and looked upon what they had created.
The contraption could simply be described as an airplane. It was a cylindrical box, had a single seat for the pilot, with a bright metallic rudder to cause propulsion. On the side it read, "The Diamond Spoon" with an emblem containing both their cutie marks. The wheels were regular wagon wheels, graciously donated by the Apples, without their knowledge of course.
"Alright, let's put it to the test." Diamond Tiara placed a flight helmet on her head, and covered her eyes with the goggles.
Pinkie Pie gave her a quick description on how to fly it. "Turn this to go that way, turn that to turn it the other way, and this is the panic button. Press it when you panic or see something horrifying." With this inspiring flight lesson, Diamond took flight, becoming the second earth pony ever fly using a strange device, the first being Pinkie of course.
Diamond flew through the air, looking down upon the populace of Ponyville with pity. She was looking down upon them, literally being right above them. She wasn't just on top of the world, she was soaring above the top. No barrier to hold her down, no obstacle to get in her way, she could go where ever she wanted. A sense of freedom and joy started to worm it's way into her brain, the exuberance of having no boundries to be constricted to. Celestia's bright shining sun gleamed off the front of the aircraft, making her feel as if she was indeed part of the sun which all the ponies hold so dear. She glided to and fro, flying into the clouds, enjoying the feel of the moisture on her coat. She wiped off her goggles and went for another run. She started to fly downward, only to gain momentum enough for her to go back up, to feel the g-forces and feel a sense of excitement. She had to be careful not to get to excited and yell though, for she was well aware of the dangers of flying insects. Her mane rustled in the wind, causing a slight chill, but she didn't care, for she was living. Diamond Tiara started getting a little reckless, and started trying out tricks, such as the aileron roll. These just increased her thrill. Tears streaked down her cheeks as she fully realized what she had been missing, what Silver Spoon had been missing, and what Scootaloo was missing.
That's when the reality of why she did this dawned upon her. "Oh right, hehe, time to rub this in her flightless face!" Diamond coasted along, looking out for Scootaloo, and making sure she was low enough to see her reaction when she flew by. After a couple minutes of gliding, she finally spotted her.
"Hey Scootaloo...!" Diamond Tiara managed to yell, right before that tree made contact...
"Huh...? Where am I...?" Diamond studdered, seeing Silver Spoon and Scootaloo.
"You weren't looking where you were going, and you sorta crashed." Scootaloo replied. "The doctor says it's lucky we were there, or else you would've been in worse condition."
"Huh, that's good." Diamond Tiara grinned slightly. "How long am I gonna be out of commission?"
"About a week according to the nurse, then you'll be good to leave the hospital." Silver Spoon held her hoof. "I'm just so glad you're okay."
"Me too." Diamond coughed. "Hey Silver? When I'm out of here, let's rebuild that plane..."
