Finding your place in the world
Moving day
Load Full StoryNext Chapter-Tuesday
A dark apartment with a couch right next to the open kitchen and two other doors. One leading to a bed room which went unused by its occupant and the other to a bathroom that ran hot and cold water without the hot. A duffle bag and a suitcase sat silently next to the door ready to leave there at a moments notice. The place that the owner slept was not a home. It only held one occupant and yet he never felt welcomed. The door next to the kitchen which lead to the outside world opened slowly as if the entity who had opened it did so out of obligation. The occupant of these rooms had returned.
With a faint smell of alcohol he entered his apartment for the last time. His landlord had informed him 2 months ago that the building was deemed "impossible to live in" and "was in dire need of demolishing." or something. He could use a change of scenery, this place was always unsettling to him. Probably because he lived in the dodgy end of Canterlot. The only nice part of this side of town was the bar he worked at. He loved it there, his co- workers were friendly and they made jokes about each other every day. He was sad when he had to quit. His sister lived in the complete opposite side of town (The more shiny part) making it would be impossible to commute to and fro everyday. The taxi fair alone would cost more then what he was making.
He sat on the floor waiting for the hours to pass. His sister was going to pick him up at 6 am sharp. And he was sure that they were going to leave not a moment later. He hated this place. It made him feel alone and less of a stallion and more of a colt. Shaking his head to disrupt the thoughts, he looked at the clock. "3 am eh?" He said aloud. He was sitting alone in the dark for roughly 4 hours now. He decided to leave the dark and depressing place. The place where he had spent 11 months of his time doing nothing but existing. He picked up his things and opened his door. He paused in the hall way and looked back. "Was it always this dark?" He asked himself. He remembered the first day he moved in. Fresh out of collage he was determined to make his own mark in life, and he knew this is where he would start. 11 months was along time to prove himself wrong. He started down the hall to wait the remaining 2 and a half hours in front of the building for his sister.
At the chime of 6 he saw a hint of sun rise from earth. He wondered how Princess Celestia was doing. His sister held an important title that kept her in constant contact with the Princesses. They had become close friends and acted very familiar with each other. Celestia herself invited his sister and him to the castle for hearthswarming Eve. He too was close with Celestia but he never flaunted it. He would send her a letter now and then to see if she wasn't terribly busy and they would have some tea and catch up. They hadn't done so in quite some time so he was hoping it would be raiser what with living near the castle now.
His thought were interrupted by a squeal of delight. "Polaris!" His sister squealed. She was almost as delighted as him to see her. She engulfed her little brother in the tightest hug she could manage. "I missed you! How long has it been how many years?"
"Hey Emmy it's been like three weeks." He chuckled. His sister was always saying stuff to get him to laugh. "And I sent you a letter yesterday." She frowned at him. He smiled slightly and rolled his eyes. He would have to play along. "I mean, so many years! I've missed you too!" She gave him a nuggy and scoffed
"Smartass. So you all packed?" He nodded his head and grabbed his bad. She took his suitcase and they started walking. "It's gonna be like old times living together!" She said with a slight nudge. "Do you want your own room or bunk beds?" She asked.
"Is that even a question?" He said without looking. "Bunk beds duh!" He nudged her back.
"Well you either get bottom bunk your your own room. Non negotiable." She said with a half serious tone. He feigned shock.
"Bah! I refuse to sleep under you, you might make the bed collapse!" He laughed as she hit him in the arm.
"Well we don't want another bed wetting experience now do we?" She teased.
"That was once, ONCE!" He defended.
"Pfft whatever I'm still scared." There was a short silence followed by uncontrollable laughter. He really missed his sister. She always knew how to make him smile. As they continued walking the sun rose higher and higher but the air remained brisk. "So, there's this fancy dinner thing happening on Thursday. And-"
"Will there be free food?" He interrupted.
"Yes and dancing and we can go shopping for a suit tomorrow if you'd like." Polaris opened his mouth to sY something. "Yes we can get some ice cream." His mouth fell silent. It was a tradition between them. Ever since she went off to boarding school, whenever they were apart for more then a week she would always treat him to ice cream.
Clearing his throat he answered with a more refined accent. "Hmm I guess I shan't say no then."
She mimicked his voice. "Yes quite." She said fake sipping some tea. As they sauntered down the street the air warmed a bit. "I'll be sure to inform the major that we'll be attending." His eyes widened.
"The major is going? I haven't seen him since my birthday!" He said excitedly.
"He dose quite miss you. He wishes you'd write more but he knows your in a hard time in your life and understands." She said doing her best impersonation of the major.
"Gee thanks major." He laughed.
"Well here we are! La casa de Emerald!" She said as the had arrived at her estate. A rather small three story mansion. It was given to her when she was promoted it was also a gift from Celestia herself. The gates opened and they were greeted as one of her staff took the bags from them both. "Please take these to the guess bed room Hanz."
"Very good madam." He bowed as he used his magic to lift the bags. "Hello again master Polaris." He said as he bowed to Polaris.
"Hey Hanz, how's the wife?" He asked as the walked.
"As exhausting as ever sir." He said with a small grin.
"Hanz you dog, never change." He said straightening himself. "Now be gone with you!" He said in a snooty tone.
Rubbing his hooves together Hanz said just as snootily "hmm very good sir." And left. Hanz was the oldest but most enthusiastic stallion his sister had employed.
He stopped his sister. "Hey, you know I'm only staying-"
"Until you get back on your feet yeah I know. Do you want me to ask around for any available jobs?" She asked. "Or would you like to continue using your own resources?"
"Don't start." He said exhaustedly. When he left to start his new life he decided that he would find his way without anyponies help. "The only thing I need help with right now is learning prober dinner technique."
His sister laughed and gave him a peck on the head. "Alright but first. You get some rest. You have bags under your eyes, and we shan't have that at dinner! Now off you go I'll wake you around noon and we can get some lunch."
-Wednesday
A lone candle was the only thing lighting her dark bedroom. The sound of a sad lullaby was being played by its occupant. The instrument that was being played was engrave on the side. 'Property of Octavia' it read. It was late when she played, not too late as to disturb her house mate though. But still late enough for her to feel like she needed to play something a bit sad. She made it a personal goal to play at least once every night. It cleared her head of the days events and allowed her to sleep more peacefully though she was having trouble tonight. She was especially perturbed because her boss had invited her to a formal dinner party tomorrow. He was known to be a bit of a slime-ball, but if she said no then it could mean the end of her carrier. "It's just dinner Octavia that's all." She tried to calm herself. "Hmm, but the last mare he had dinner with was also made to had "breakfast" with him." She missed a note in her song with the thought of sleeping with such a creep. It was well known that her boss Mr. Decibel or as he would have her call him Decibel spent his and the music halls, in which they worked, money on two things: rigged races and loose mares. She sighed aloud and put down her instrument. She decided to save this matter for the morning.
She took a deep breath. She decided on the topic of domestics for her next problem. Her and her friend were in dire need of another roommate. The last one was doing some form of drug and was arrested.
A shame but they never got along well anyway. Maybe she should put an add in the paper? Or talk to her friend about potential replacements? "Gah!" She said tossing her hooves up. "Are there no problems which I can solve tonight?" She sighed again and have up. She was going to bed. Maybe a good night sleep was what she needed.
