//-------------------------------------------------------// Hearts & Hooves - A day in Canterlot -by MLPAllGrownUp- //-------------------------------------------------------// //-------------------------------------------------------// Chapter 1 //-------------------------------------------------------// Chapter 1 The former bearers of the Elements of Harmony, best pony friends forever, and their dragon associate were all sat in Golden Oaks Library the day before Hearts and Hooves. Of course being young mares and whelp, they didn't care too much about finding their own special someponies yet. But such an important day in the calendar still impacted on their lives…especially for the only unicorn in the group. “So, tomorrow morning I’ll be going up to Canterlot to hoof deliver, alter and fit dresses for some of my most important clients in time for their Hearts & Hooves dates in the evening,” Rarity concluded her story. “Hearts and Hooves in Canterlot…sounds like you're going to be in your element!” Fluttershy replied in her soft dulcet tones “How wonderful for you!” “Well, it’s hardly a pleasure visit as I’ll be getting an early train and be fitting dresses all day. I won’t be finished to quite late but at least I can stay over and not worry about rushing home.” Rarity turned to her alicorn friend “Thank you Twilight for arranging my stay at the Castle…hotels are very expansive tomorrow!” “It’s no problem Rarity; just don’t be getting too caught up in everything to do with Canterlot like last time you stayed...” Rarity blushed a little at the reminder of when she became the pony everypony wanted to know, and what she learnt about friendship “There’s no chance of that this time. Outside work I’ll just be spending time in the castle suite, I can’t even go out for dinner!” Rarity cast a look at Twilight who nodded that she was ready, and the rest of the ponies picked up on the pre-arranged signal. “What do you mean?” Twilight replied acting confused. “Well, I can’t be seen out on Hearts and Hooves day evening alone, it wouldn't do my social and business profile much good if an up and coming fashion designer trying to sell beautiful dresses can’t rustle up a date...or even a friend!” “Sorry sugarcube, I would come and keep ya company but Big Mac’s got some plans so I need to foalsit Applebloom and look after the farm.” “Shoot, I would totally offer as well except I’m looking after the twins for the Cakes so they can have a romantic night together. It’s like a party, except I’m not invited for some reason, but that’s utterly okay as I’ll have fun with the foals!” “I can’t stand to be back around all those high-society ponies after my modelling days,” Fluttershy added weekly “I’m sorry Rarity, please don’t be mad?” “Even thought I’m not into that frou-frou stuff, I wouldn’t leave you hanging…but I’ve arranged to look after Scootaloo and her sister whilst their parents go on a date to Cloudsdale." “And I’m stuck preceding over marriages and blessings all day. It’s my first one as Princess and there’s a lot of ponies wanting me to marry them.” Twilight blushed a bit as she hated the attention her new status awarded her. “Thank you all for your offers, but I know you are all busy.” Rarity turned a little and placed a hoof over her forehead dramatically “No, I shall have to go to Canterlot, alone, and spend all day trying to navigate my way around, alone! And then, after a hard days work, stay in the castle and eat in my room, alone, lest the shame of it all reverberates around the whole kingdom!” Rarity really would make a good actress Twilight thought to herself as the pony wallowed in fake despair. “Wait a minute. Don’t we know like a totally awesome guide to canterot already?” Rainbow Dash hovered in the air and pointed a hoof. “Who me?” the dragon replied dumbfounded as he noticed the mare was pointing at him “I’m sure one of the Royal Guard would be willing to help…” Applejack interrupted the dragon before he got too far “That right. Spike, you know Canterlot like the back of you hoof…” “Claw” “…back of your claw, you could help Rarity travel and make sure she doesn't get lost!“ Rarity flashed her eyes as she always did “Would you Spikey Wikey? We work so well together that it’ll make everything so much easier if I had your reliable helping hooves...” “Again, claws” Spike replied. Now that he was maturing a little he had found himself becoming a little more sarcastic, usually resulting in him losing his ice-cream privileges. “Oh whatever, would you come to Canterlot to be my guide? I can’t afford to get lost and delayed” the fashionista batted her eyelids again at the poor defenseless dragon. Unfortunately, whilst his heart was screaming for him to say yes, the loyalty to his guardian came first “But Twilight needs me, I can’t just go off and leave her to run the Library when she’s so busy!” “Actually Spike, I’ve already arrange for the Library’s to be closed all day as I’ll be doing the weddings with the Mayor.” “Who would help you get ready?” “I’m pretty sure Twilight can look after herself Spike” Applejack replied. Twilight giggled and rubbed her charges spines a little “I think Rarity could use your help a lot more then I need it, but thank you for being so concerned number one assistant.” Having placated his undying loyalty to his…whatever Twilight was to him…he was more than happy to say the next few words “Sure Rarity, what time should I come and help you with your luggage?” //-------------------------------------------------------// Chapter 2 //-------------------------------------------------------// Chapter 2 It had just gone noon and Rarity had already finished the fourth fitting of the day. Having caught the first train of the morning had given the pair a head start on the days plans and thanks to the great working relationship between the fashionista and her dragon helper, things were going well. Of course, the early start was starting to catch up with both of them, and Rarity had already had three cups of coffee. Unfortunately caffeine doesn't work on dragons, but Spike had eaten a few slices of fire ruby Rarity had brought along which acted in much the same manner. Tiredness however was being overtaken by hunger as breakfast had been a swift, and rather un-appetising, sandwich on the train.[note1] As things were going excellently and being ahead of schedule, Rarity decided they should stop for lunch before going back to the castle and picking up the afternoon deliveries. As they walked together to a café he had recommended, Spike started pondering what had happened so far that day. He had noticed Rarity was acting a little different towards him, in some ways he could not quite put his claw on. She seemed to be much chattier than usual, and not just about the usual stuff like fashion and the Canterlot elite. She was asking Spike all sorts of questions about growing up in the city, his favourite places, anything really. Usually when the pair was alone they were mostly in silence except for discussions over whatever they were doing, but today the seamstress was constantly talking, except when she was having to concentrate. And then there was the physical side of things. When they were walking together, she walked a little closer than usual, so much so they would occasionally bump into each other slightly and she didn't seem to notice. On the train, rather than sitting on the seat opposite him like she usually did, she had sat next to him instead. But equally she also seemed to be acting a little more, well, distant somehow. She had thanked him whenever he helped her, but she didn't compliment him as she usually did. And there was something else just out of reach of his mind, something missing that seemed to be a new wall up between the pair. It is hearts and hooves days, and she did bring me up to Canterlot to spend time with her. No, it’s only work, theres nothing more here! Is there? Overall, he was confused, but he was spending time with Rarity and that was all that counted. They reached the café and took a table outside. A waiter came over and passed them the menus. “Spike, what would you recommend?” Rarity asked Spike decided to take control, as he knew the menu well and definitely knew what his companion liked “Waiter, please could you give us two house salads, low calorie dressing, and a pitcher of elderflower water. And I don't suppose you have my usual still available?” “But of course Mr Spike, we always keep a gems or two in stock in case you and Ms…well…I guess I mean [iPrincess Sparkle return.” “I’ll make sure we come next time Twilight visits Canterlot” Spike smiled back. “Thank you Sir. I’ll be right back with the drinks for you and the bearer of Generosity, Mr Spike." The waiter left, and Spike just waited for what he knew was coming. “Mr Spike? Your usual?” Rarity raised an eyebrow. “Twilight and I used to come here a lot. Her parents used to bring her here and even as a foal the waiters always called her Ms Sparkle which she absolutely adored! When she moved into the castle, one day she brought me along to this restaurant and insisted, as young filly’s do, that they call me Mr Spike…and it’s stuck ever since!” “Awww, Twilight must have really been adorable raising you, I’m sure no-pony could resist her as a filly.” “Not many ponies can resist her now as a Princess, she’s pretty cute!” Spike replied. He wanted to say that the pony sitting opposite him was so much cuter, but bite his tongue knowing it wasn't the right time. Rarity however seemed to pick up on the sudden change in Spikes demeanours, and an awkward silence fell over the pair. Luckily within moments the salads and drinks arrived helping to break the hush and the pair started chatting away again. Spike looked over to the pony he adored, a stylish hat on her head as she always wore in Canterlot, and thought just how lucky he was to be spending Hearts and Hooves lunch with her. However, being a little older, he noticed something else. Whilst she was talking to him, it was clear that her eyes were looking elsewhere. Quickly tracing his partners eyeline, Spike’s heart broke in two, but he made sure not to how it. Rarity was gazing at two stallions walking past, probably off duty guards, a pair of fine physical examples of stallion masculinity. And the look in her eye was one that the young dragon had never seen the unicorn express towards him. Spike may have still been a little naïve in some of the ways of the world, but he knew that look from some of the ponies around town – the look of desire. Rarity turn back and her face changed to the look she always gave him – the look of a friend. She’s never looked at me any other way, why do I think I ever have a chance that she would? Having finished up their meals, the pony and the dragon went back to the castle and picked up the afternoons deliveries. The pair left the house of the last customer, and made their way a little sluggishly towards Canterlot Castle having had a long and hard day. The evening was starting to draw in and couples were making their way around town – younger ponies heading home after their afternoon dates, and elder ponies on their way to their more extravagant versions. Spike was still a little confused by most of todays events. Rarity was walking close to him again and except for the incident at lunchtime Spike would almost say that Rarity was acting almost a if this was a date. Perhaps all this hearts and hooves stuff has got into my head, surely she’s not interested in me that way. As they approached the castle, the guard let them in recognising Equestria’s only dragon resident and one of the element bearers instantly. They made their way to Twilight former residence when she was simply the royal protege, which was now her highly under used Princess Suite, where they would be staying the night. “So what do you want to do for dinner?” Spike asked once inside. “Oh, I’ve booked a table at one of the top restaurants in town, it was a favour from a customer” “Sounds good!” Rarity picked up a few of the remaining bags, placing one on the bed and floating a couple in her aura “We’ll need to get dressed up of course, it’s very elite and so I’ve bought the clothes with us”. “Do you want me to go outside for a few minutes whilst you get ready?” Spike asked a little nervously. “That okay Spike, I’ll get ready in the bathroom” Rarity replied in a sing song voice as she levitated a couple of bags with her into the bathroom, closing the door behind her. Spike opened the bag on the bed and saw the tuxedo that Rarity had made for him for the Grand Galloping Gala, but instead of the original tie she had packed the special gem encrusted one she had made later. He held the clothing, the memories of times both good and bad coming back to mind. A loud rumble in his stomach snapped him out of his thoughts, and it was obviously louder than he expected as he heard Rarity call out “Don’t worry Spike, I’ll only be a few minutes, I’m rather hungry myself.” Wanting to make sure he was ready, Spike quickly put on the suit and tie, and waited for the pony. A few minutes later the bathroom door opened and spinning round, Spike’s breath was taken away. Rarity was wearing the same dress that she wore to the gala, but having had to repaired she had simplified the dress a little, and made it rather a little more fitted. She also had put on some sapphire shoes, with a bit of a heel that made her legs look longer and slimmer. “You like?” the unicorn asked in a soft voice, doing a small twirl for him. Spike just stared at the unicorn and mumbled a little, not being able to process the beauty before him. Rarity just giggled “Come along Spike, I’ve arranged for a carriage to take us across town.” Author's Note 1 - Have you ever had a sandwich on a train? The. Worst. Possible. Thing!:raritydespair: https://static.fimfiction.net/images/emoticons/raritydespair.png //-------------------------------------------------------// Chapter 3 //-------------------------------------------------------// Chapter 3 Spike knew that the Gilded Truffle was one of the most exclusive restaurants in Canterlot, neigh the whole of Equestria, and was a little stunned when the carriage stopped outside. The guards pulling the carriage helped the pair out, and Spike being the gentledrake went to get the restaurant door, but was foiled as the valet got their first. Upon entering, Spike and Rarity were slightly stunned by the decorations of the restaurant. It was more lavish than Canterlot Castle, a place both of them knew like the back of their claw or hoof. In fact, it was probably the most impressive piece of architecture in the whole kingdom, second only to the Crystal Empire Palace. But then, how do you compete with a palace made out of crystal designed by a megalomaniac dictator? The maitre d approached the pair as they stood in the doorway. “Do you have a reservation?” he asked in a slight French accent that Rarity recognised immediately as being fake. “Yes, table for two in the name of Spike Sparkle and Rarity Belle” A flash of recognition sparkled across his face, before he recomposed himself. “Of course, your elementness” he bowed, and led the way through the restaurant, Spike waving Rarity to go first. Whilst most of the ponies gathered were probably on a date, the majority paused their flirtings for a moment as the pair walked passed. Afterall, how often do the ponies outside of Ponyville get to see either a dragon or a national hero, let alone both together? Having reached one of the more private tables in the corner, the pair were seated and lavish menus were placed in front of them. As soon as the waiter left them, the dragon turned to his companion and asked “Spike Sparkle?” Rarity smiled back “Well, I don’t know what your surname is and ‘the dragon’ seems a little redundant. I didn't know you went simply by Mr Spike. Hope you don’t mind?” “Not at all…I like it! Just don’t tell Twilight or it’ll go right to her head.” Both of them smiled at that “And Elementness?” “I think he just made that up…although I like it and may get everypony to call me that now” Rarity giggled. The pair of them picked up the menus, which catered for all tastes. The waiter came over to take the drinks order and Rarity ordered a bottle of white wine, a soda, and two glasses. “Wait, wine for me?” Spike asked once the waiter had left. “You’ve had alcohol before, haven't you?” “Yeah, but Twilight doesn’t like me having it too often…and aren’t I too young?” “Not to have a spritzer with dinner, and besides you're growing up now. Either way, I’m not sure if this place sells ice cream floats!” The pair giggled a little, and returned to making their meal choices. The waiter came back over with a bottle of wine (A 54, good year) and served the pair, instinctively leaving enough space for Rarity to spritzer both glasses. The pair then ordered their meals, and as the waiter left the pair clinked their glasses “To a successful days tailoring!” After a rather big first sip, Rarity leant over the table a little, but the change in her demeanour caught the dragons attention “Now, I have something I want to discuss with you, and I’m not sure how you will take it!” Rarity paused to take another sip of drink, and noticed how wide Spike’s eyes were I’m going to break his heart aren’t I? “This is why I wanted to get you away from Ponyville. I know it’s a little cruel to take you well away from your comfort zone, but I have good reason. If it goes well, then this will be a nice memory to keep hold of.” Rarity started fidgeting a little with her hooves “Equally, if it doesn’t go so well, you won’t be reminded of it that regularly like if we were to have this conversation at the boutique or somewhere you’ll see everyday.” Spike just sort nodded that he understood, but remained silent. “For a long time now I’ve known that you’ve had, let’s call them special feelings, for me. I know now you’ve had them since the very first moment you saw me!” Rarity blushed a bit here, but Spike was unmoving “I love –“ Ekk, wrong word?”- our friendship and don’t want anything to risk that. But things can't continue this way forever.” Rarity took another sip of wine, Spike still unmoving and looking at her with sadness in his eyes Don’t stretch this out anymore than you have to! Rarity thought to herself. She extended one hoof across the table and took one of Spikes claws in hers “As much as I care about you Spike, and I really do, we can never be together…in the way that you want!” Rarity had wondered if saying it so brutally may have been too much, and had already planned a quick exit for them should things escalate – there was no need for a crying dragon to upset everypony else’s Hearts and Hooves day. But she had hoped that between of all her friends they had judged that the dragon was mature enough to handle this. Spike sat there for a moment, and then let out a sigh and dropped his eyes to the table “I guess I sort of always knew that!” A quietness fell between the pair as the elder unicorn waited for the dragon to continue, and after a gulp of wine he did “Ever since I saw you I thought you were the most beautiful pony I had ever seen. Having seen many ponies since I can still say that is still the fact” Rarity tried to contain her blush, but one still appeared. “And of course having got to know you closer than any other pony except Twilight, I can see the beauty on the outside is nothing compare to that of the inside…you are one of the most amazing ponies there is!” “Spike…” Rarity tried to interrupt. The dragon just carried on “We have spent a lot of time together, usually when working but not always. And you have been kind and affectionate towards me since day one, like you are with everypony. A part of me always knew that you never felt the same way towards me as I did you, but I dragon can dream.” “Oh Spike…” “Of course, what was it two years ago I did try to find if you felt the same by declaring my feelings…and you stopped me!” “I know Spike, but I couldn't let you say it. Once it was out there, like now, everything changes. Perhaps it was selfish of me to do that, just so I could spent time with the young and innocent dragon we all love!” “I’m still young and innocent!” Spike protested. Rarity made the decision to start challenging the dragon to realise the truth “Spike, I want you to answer this honestly. Have you started to think about me…differently then when you first moved to Ponyville?” “What do you mean?” “I think you know what I mean…you know...?” the unicorn trailed off, but the meaning was clear. The dragon blushed in response “I’m so sorry Rarity. I feel so ashamed when I do think of you like that!” the dragon half wailed, but at a hushed volume. Rarity kept herself composed “Now now Spike, it’s perfectly natural thoughts as you grow up. I have noticed that some days you have kept yourself more distant from me than others, and I suspected as much. But it’s nothing to be ashamed of!” “You…you don’t mind?” Rarity paused for a second “Well, to be truthful, it’s difficult to know exactly what to think. It’s not exactly the most charming of compliments you can give…but as I say it’s natural and I can’t blame you.” Their starters arrived and taking the interruption as an opportunity to think they ate them in silence. Rarity was glad that so far the conversation had gone well, but knew that there was a lot more to discuss. “Is there anything you want to ask?” Rarity smiled warmly at the sad looking whelp. Spike had one question form in his mind “Why now?” Rarity gulped a little “Well, you are growing up Spike. Whilst as a baby dragon there probably was no harm, and in fact is healthy to have such a crush…” “Can we not call it a crush…it is more than that!” the dragon interrupted a little hurt. “Of course Spike, my apologises. Whilst having these feelings for anypony may have been healthy, now that you are maturing it’s important that your, erm, energies are focused in the right direction…” Spike just sort of cringed in response, but didn’t try to argue the point so Rarity carried on “And I’m growing up too. I’m not planning to rush anything, but someday I will probably have a special somepony of my own…” “Pony” Spike repeated in the most rejected tone Rarity had heard for a long time. Rarity grimaced, and took Spike’s claw in her hoof again “Spike, I want to make one thing clear. I know you might think this is only because you are a dragon. I’ll admit that whilst it is part of any logical thoughts when thinking about relationships, feelings are not logical. I’m sure if I felt about you the way you clearly feel about me, then the situation would be different…very different! But the harsh truth is I just don’t love you…anymore than a friend” Tears started to form around the edges of the young dragon’s eyes, and Rarity had to look away It’s like a bandage…the worst is now surely over and the pain will subside “Rarity, please don’t feel bad, it’s not right that I’m making you feel this way!” The unicorns heart almost broke I’ve just crushed his dreams and he’s worried about my feelings…oh dear sweet thing! “Oh Spike, far from it. I should feel a little bad, as I never want to hurt somepony, and no matter what you say - ”Rarity waved of the dragon trying to interrupt “ - I know this is hurting you. If I didn’t feel bad for making you feel sad…well that would make me some sort of monster!” Spike sort of smiled back at Rarity, an unspoken understanding shared between them. “Spike, we may have a lot to deal with, but it doesn’t all have to be done tonight. If you need space, either temporary or permanently, I completely understand. Celestia and Luna have both offered their time this evening if you want to talk, and Twilight can be here within an hour.” “No, I want to be alone right now…and there’s no need to bother the Princesses. As you said, we need to be mature over this. Besides, we haven’t eaten yet” As if on cue, the main course arrived and the pair tucked into the food, Spike needing to think and Rarity needing time to plan what she planned to say yet. Knowing that there was still more to discuss, Rarity decided to push on “As I was saying earlier, soon I will probably start to think about finding a special somepony of my own. I haven’t not looked because of you, but sometimes it has made it awkward.” “I understand Rarity” Spike munched on his salad a bit “I saw you looking at those stallions earlier at the cafe…and they were looking back. I could see that you wanted to go over and talk to them.” “Yes Spike, if I am honest I did and that’s a good example. Today I decided against it because we had not yet had this chat. And I would never leave a friend sitting alone and wander off after some colt! But, if we're going to continue being friends, that does mean you will see me flirt, and date, other ponies…and of course someday hopefully settle down and have foals!” Spike sighed dejectedly “I might not really like it, but I suppose I always knew the day would come...I didn’t want it to but it was bound to happen.” “That’s very mature for you…and exactly what I mean. I would not want to deliberately hurt you, but I can’t never date just to spare your feelings! “I only want you to be happy…and I would rather that you dated somepony that be sad and alone, like a crazy cat lady” “I only have one cat!” “Give it time” Spike half teased back “Besides, I have seen you go on about Prince Blueblood, and that Trenderhoof fella!” Rarity grimaced “Don’t remind me about thouse…although I am thankful I didn't end up dating either of those jerks…thanks to you! “Me?” “Yes, you were the first pony…being…that ever treated me like a proper lady, rather then just a piece of arm-candy. I’m not sure but I would have probably put up with Prince Blueblood, at least for a while, for the social exposure. No male had ever treated me with respect...except for you. You treated me like a lady, always cared about how I felt and even fought dogs for me. I doubt that Prince would have done anything else except run away! Rarity cast her usual winning smile to the dragon “If it wasn't for you…I wouldn't be half the pony I am today. This is why I don't want to lose you as a friend!” Spike sat for a while thinking before looking up at Rarity who could see the conflict in his eyes “What if I can’t ever see you in the same light as the rest of you girls? I don’t think I can just stop feeling…something towards you!” Rarity looked at the whelp, her own heart aching as she saw her friend looking at her so hurt and confused “And nor should you, Spike. Nopony should ever tell you what you can and cannot feel, not even me. There’s a big difference between having feelings and acting on them.” “What...what do you mean?” “Well, if you still have feelings for me, then you will still have feelings…and that’s no problem. But, if you act or do anything to try to force your feelings onto me, or try to manipulate my feelings or actions towards you…” “I would never do that!” Spike interrupted “And I hope that remains the case, I really do!” “So what does all this mean for us?” Spike looked up hopefully to Rarity. “Depends what you mean by us really. The reason I wanted to have this conversation was that I want to ensure we continue to be friends. If you ever need to talk, I will always listen and be there for you, but if we are going to be friends, you just need to respect me, and I need to respect you.” “Respect me…" Spike repeated "Does that mean you won’t let me help you anymore?” “Far from it Spike. Whilst perhaps I will need to be careful not to give you the wrong impression, especially for the next few months, I think this may open up for us to spend more time together.” “It does?” “Yes Spike. Now this is in the open, I don’t have to worry about how I act around you. As long as neither of us hold anything back or be sneaky and instead we play our cards straight, we can develop a much deeper friendship. “ Rarity put down her fork again and learned forwards, a slight determined look in her eyes “But Spike, should you ever lie to me or do anything to try to make us be together, be more than just friends, then any friendship we have would be over. I would hate to do that, and goodness knows what that would mean for the whole group and the elements of harmony, but I need to know I can trust you…if you ever break that trust then…” her sentence trailed off as tears started “Just...don’t…” Spike eyes changed from sadness into something that could be described as committed “I understand Rarity. I promise that I will never lie to you, and will never keep anything from you. Your friendship is too valuable to me to risk it on something as stupid as my heart!” “Oh Spike, don’t say that. Your heart, your love, will someday make you and somepony else very happy!” “Yeah, like who?” “Well, I know that a few of the younger mares and fillies have a bit of a crush on you!” “They do? Who?” Spike replied enthusiastically, his heartbreak momentarily forgotten in a flush of positivity. “Oh, I have been Pinkie Promised not to reveal who they are” Rarity slightly teased back, enjoying the smile on her companions face for once. “If other ponies like me then…why not you?” Spike replied a little hurt, before putting his claws over his mouth adding, “Sorry, I shouldn’t have said that!” “No, its fair enough to ask!” Rarity coughed a little “Openness is key here. I just don’t feel that towards you Spike. I care about you possibly more than you realise right now. As I said, it’s not because you’re a dragon, or younger then me, but I simply don’t have romantic feelings for you?” “Couldn’t that change? Doesn’t love come and go?” he pleaded. Rarity smiled at the youngster “Spike…why do you just not date somepony else. How about Lyra? Shes cute, and funny, and you both like music and dancing? I’m just a simple pony, so wouldn't dating anypony else be the same? “Of course not, your special and whilst Lyra’s great, I just don’t feel that way about her like I do you!” “Exactly Spike” Rarity replied a little matter of factly, her face warm but sincere. It took a few seconds for it to sink in “Oh…I see what you mean. Love is not something you can make happen, it’s either there…” Rarity leant forwards over the table and took Spikes claw again “…or it’s not. There are a lot of different types of love Spike and just because you do not love somepony romantically, doesn't mean you don’t love them. I have many friends I like, I have the five girls I love as friends, I have my sister I love…even when she is annoying, and of course my parents. And then there is you. It’s not more than any of the others, it’s just different. I don't know how to say it..." Rarity trailed off. Spike looked at Rarity and simply smiled, knowing what she was trying to say "Say no more!" Rarity smiled back at her companion and began eating again. Spike needed time to think it all over and the conversation onto some of the events of the day. Once the meal was finished and taken away, the pair sat chatting like many of the other couples in the restaurant, when Rarity noticed another activity some of them were up to. "Spike, would you like to dance?" "Really?" the dragon replied a little curiously. "I see no harm...as friends of course!" Spike stood up from his chair and extended his claw "I would be honoured, ma Lady!" The pair walked over to the dancefloor, and everypony's eyes fell on them. Spike looked at the other couples dancing, and noticed a problem. When ponies danced they were obviously on all four hooves, rather than bipedally like himself or a minotaur like Iron Will. Therefore, if two ponies want to dance together, they would simply cradle there heads in the others neck and move in synchronisation...and this was a rather intimate way of dancing. "Erm, how are we going to go about this...we have a slight alignment issue!" Spike half blushed as he looked at Rarity, waved his arms a little causing the mare to giggle slightly in response. The unicorn stepped forwards and rested her head on the dragons shoulder "Put you arms around my neck" she whispered to the whelp, who shyly obliged and gently held the pony, making sure not to tangle his claws in her mane. "And remember, you have to lead" the unicorn whispered. Taking the hint, Spike started to move them... The pair whirled around the dancefloor, two legs and fours hooves moving in perfect synchronicity. The two may have never danced together before, and Spike never done any form of formal dancing, but somehow they were perfect for each other. It was just like when they were working on an urgent dress order, the pair seemed to know where the other was and what the other needed without any words, simply reflecting the amount of time they spent together. Some of the ponies stopped and watched the ballet performed by the VIP guests, but the pair didn't notice - they were lost in the rhythm and the moment. After a number of dances, where time and tune dissolved seamlessly into one another, Spike led Rarity away from the dancefloor for a rest. As they walked back to the table he simply whispered "Thank you Rarity...that was...thank you!" "It's my pleasure Spike" she cooed back, knowing what it had really meant to him. "And I see what you mean about us being closer friends...I wouldn't want to trade this for anything" The restaurant was dying down and it was time for the pair to leave. Rarity was surprised to find that the bill had been comped, and despite both unicorn and dragon trying to insist on payment, the owner was adamant that as national heroes he couldn't accept their bits or gems. Of course the pair made sure to tip the waiters and other staff accordingly, but even they took the attention of the pair as the most valuable thing in the world. Stepping outside, the guard were waiting and helped them into the carriage. Spike sat down next to Rarity, and as the carriage set off with a jolt something clicked in the young dragons head. "Wait, does Lyra have a crush on me?" "Why do you say that?" Rarity giggled back "You used her as an example...and she was really impressed with how I could use my claws to play her instrument, like it was meant to be paid with these things!" he replied, flexing his claws. Rarity and Spike looked at each other, and then started laughing, the tension and the upset from earlier in the evening having been consigned to the past. Author's Note In case you are thinking Rarity has been a bit unkind or a tease here, all I'll say is it's not been deliberate by Rarity and the others, it's a little bit of inexperience and naivety rather than anything else. And I've pretty much written this out of personal experience (unfortunately on the side of Spike) but thats all I'm saying on that sad chapter of my life! :raritywink: https://static.fimfiction.net/images/emoticons/raritywink.png //-------------------------------------------------------// Chapter 4 //-------------------------------------------------------// Chapter 4 The pair got out of the carriage that had returned them to Canterlot Castle and made their way through the castle to the tower suite Spike had been brought up in from birth. The young dragon reflected on how much simpler life was back then, when all he was worried about was finding the right book for Twilight. Friends, and love, were the last thing on the young dragons mind... But now everything had changed and he wasn't sure if he was going to be okay or not. Sure, Rarity said that they could be close friends, but the young dragon had wanted more than that for so long. However, he was not stupid and for a while now he had started to accept that it was a dream that would never be fulfilled...started to accept, but never really wanted it to happen. Every time he saw the alabaster unicorn, even right now as they walked together, he still felt the same as he did that very first time. Her perfect fur, the beautiful mane and those eyes that he could be lost forever in. But more than that was her electrifying personality, her unwavering generosity and that spark that everypony loved about her. Tonight’s conversation was a long time coming, and despite having thought about it before he was emotionally drained. The fantasy was already perishing and his first crush was coming to an end, to be replaced be something else. Would the hurt of being around a pony he adored, but could never have, be worth it? The dragon looked over to Rarity as they walked Yes he thought to himself Having Rarity as a friend is worth going to tartus and back for. She was something special like a rare gem… Spike practically facehooved at his own mental pun There are too many things I cannot give her as a lover, and perhaps if I truly loved her I would have known that from the start. Is that why I never actually asked her out, except when I thought I was going to die? Rarity turned and smiled at Spike as he held one of the castle doors open for her I love her...but she doesn't love me. I can't make her love me...and I wouldn't want to make somepony love me. I guess a friendship is better than nothing... Upon entering the suite, the pair noticed that the temperature inside was just as cold as the late winter air outside. “Brrr, it’s a bit cold up here” Rarity noted as she lit a fire that was in the corner of the room with her magic “I should have made sure a fire was ready for when we returned” “It’s my fault Rarity…I should have remembered how cold –“ And lonely he thought to himself “- this place gets!” The pony smiled warmly at the dragon “Well, I don’t know about you, but after the early start today I could do with a long sleep!” Spike agreed as him no doubt the pony was emotionally drained as well and the pair started getting ready for bed. Rarity went in the bathroom to do her evening ablutions whilst Spike simply took of his suit and went over to his basket One advantage of not having fur or mane…takes no time to get ready for anything! After a suitable time to remove her makeup and let down her mane, Rarity came out of the bathroom. Spike was already curled up in his basket but had a quick glance at the pony Wow, I’ve never seen her look so natural before…it really suits her! However, as much he wanted to tell Rarity this, he knew it was on the wrong side of the imaginary line he know had to tread. He settled for “Thank you for a wonderful day…goodnight Rarity” “Goodnight Spike” Rarity replied as she got gently into bed and settled down for the night. However, she could hear a strange clinking noise and her curiosity got the better of her. She scooted over, mucking up the sheets I can fix them in a minute and peered over the side of the bed towards Spike. She looked down at the small whelp, huddled up in a blanket but obviously feeling the cold as his teeth were chattering Poor Spike, always too brave around me, but that needs to change. She gently lay down over the edge of the bed “Spike, I know that whilst dragons generate their own heat during the day, that you're too young to do so during the night. You must be freezing.” “Its fine, I’ll be fine” the dragon replied. “Spike, that sounds like a lie…you're lying to me...” Rarity trailed off with a hint of disappointment in her voice. Spike sat up from his basket and turned to the pony facing him “Sorry, you’re right, but I didn’t want to cause a fuss!” Rarity looked at him with a friendly smile rather than a scowl “That doesn’t matter between friends. I don’t care what you ever want to say or ask me, as long as you are honest and truthful that’s all I can ask” Rarity lifted up the sheet next to her “Come here, we can share each others warmth.” “Are you sure?” Spike replied hesitantly. “Spike, I have slept in the same bed as Sweetie Belle on numerous occasions as well as friends, even Applejack and Pinkie Pie!” “Pinkie? When did that happen?” the dragon sniggered, knowing that out of his friends none were more different than the fashionista and the party pony. “Oh, on the way back from Dodge Junction – Pinkie pulled out an emergency tent from, well you know Pinkie, but we still had to curl up together for warmth during the night” “But that’s different…they are mares or family afterall and I’m a… male …dragon” Rarity paused for a moment “True, but a friend is a friend. Whilst it may be a bit, unusual, for a mare to share her bed with a stal…male, its not unheard of.” Rarity noticed that Spike still seemed a little unsure, so decided to up the ante “Are you going to try anything?” she asked a little bashfully. Spike visibly gasped “Of course not! I would never do that to anypony…especially you!” “And I believe you…so where is the problem. You've never shown my any reason not to trust you!” “What if, you know, stuff happens?” Spike replied a little shyly. Rarity lay back down and patted the empty side of the bed. Spike slowly climbed in and lay there and quickly found himself pulled backwards into a hug. Any other time he would have been on cloud nine, being cradled by his idea of perfection, but it just left him even more confused. Rarity must have picked up on this “Everything is your choice Spike. I don’t want to lose you as a friend and understand that it’ll take time to settle into a new rhythm. Take right now…” she paused to give the whelp a small squeeze “You’re one of my best friends, and you need my warmth tonight. I am more than happy to give it to you, but before I would have had to put up boundaries. I hope that we can be this close should it be ever required, and that you know what it means...” “Friendship, and nothing more” Spike replied a little autonomously. The pair lay there for a few minutes, before the dragon broke the silence “Rarity, can I ask you something?” “Of course Spike, this is a two way process!” “I’ve noticed you’ve stopped calling me ‘Spikey Wikey’ since the start of the day…why?” “Well, I thought that name may be treating you too much like a baby and now you’re growing up it’s not very appropriate. Or…” Rarity took a deep breath “…perhaps it was giving you a bit of a false impression, like it’s a pet name given to somepony…er somebody…a little more intimate than other friends” “I understand, but perhaps it’s the ideal way. Someday, I may be Spike, the special somepony or somedragon and I’m sure I’ll be Twilight’s baby dragon no matter how big I grow. And I hope to be your ‘Spikey Wikey’ from the day we met until the day we depart” Rarity considered this for a second “Are you sure about that?” “There’s nothing between us…and there never will be. I’ve known this deep down for a long time and it was only because I thought we were going to die that I, well, started to tell you how I felt”. Both of them blushed a bit at this. “But the opportunity to be a friends to somepony as amazing as you, and the others, is more than enough for me. Its going to be hard reducing, controlling, whatever the right word is...my feelings towards you, but the prize at the end of doing so seems well worth the effort. You’ve always called me Spikey Wikey, and I don’t want anything to change!” Rarity gave Spike a bit of an extra squeeze, an unspoken way of expressing she understood. “But you have to promise me one thing” the whelp spoke softly with almost an air of caution “What it is, Spikey Wikey?” Rarity replied with a hint concern. “That…whoever eventually claims your heart and becomes your special somepony, make sure that they are deserving of the finest treasure in the whole of Equestria!” Rarity started sniffing and brought the whelp into a much deeper hug before finding a few tears escaping the side of her eyes “Spike, you have such a beautiful soul, don't ever change.” She gave the dragon a gentle kiss on one of his head-spines “I will Spike, as Celestia as my witness, they will have to live up to both of our high standards.” Rarity sniffed back a few tears “And I’m sure if anypony ever broke my heart they would have a fearsome dragon ready to make them pay” “I would never interfere in your relationships…” Spike started seriously “…but give me the word and they’re toast!” the dragon giggled at the end. The pair shed a mixture of tears of laughter and sadness as they lay there together. They both hoped things would be alright between them, and Rarity knew that ultimately it was down to the dragon she currently held in her hooves. How she hoped that the young whelp would find his path through this mess, but knew that some tough times may be ahead. Spike lay there for a while, his mind churning the evening over. he knew that his light of love that shone for Rarity would need to be extinguished, or at least he would have to turn down the wick. For me to be her friend and nothing more. And all she wants from me is for me to be honest with her, thats not too much to ask really is it? Whilst that made his heart ache a little, he knew the reward for doing so would be to ensure that their fire of friendship would burn between them even brighter…. //-------------------------------------------------------// Epilogue //-------------------------------------------------------// Epilogue Spike waited outside Golden Oaks Library thinking back through the ups and downs of recent years until his concentration was broken by two familiar voices calling out “Uncle Spike”. He turned and found two foals running towards him, followed at a more leisurely and dignified pace by a familiar pair of unicorns. The large dragon bent down and gave Rarity a hug to the best of his ability now he so much bigger than anypony and even some buildings, as her pair of foals started climbing up his scales. He carefully released Rarity so she could watch over her children, and he gave her husband a hoof/claw bump hello. Silk Bow was a charming pegasus stallion in the fashion business, and had met the high standards of Rarity, her friends, her family and most importantly Ponyville’s resident dragon. Spike knew he made Rarity very happy and was as excited as any of the mares when the pair had started a family together. The family lived up in Canterlot, where Rarity had become one of the most talked about designers in the city. A family, a name in fashion, a wonderful husband – he knew it was everything she had dreamed of since she was small. But she always made time for her friends, and especially for Spike. As he grew it became more difficult for him to visit, and her family and career took up more and more of her time. However, they always made sure to make regular gem hunt together, done without fail except during the final months of pregnancy. The time always paid massive dividends for the pair…and not just in terms of jewels. Once the foals had completed their monumental climb to the dragon summit, Spike carefully lowered the young ponies from his head “Silk, I need to speak to you, care to walk with me?” “Sure Spike” he replied a little shocked, a feeling he noted from a quick glance shared by his wife, and he trotted after the dragon. The relationship between the two of them has always been a strained one - Rarity clearly loved Silk in the way should could not Spike, but in other ways she was much closer to Spike. Some of her coltfriends didn't like this sort of closeness and tried to force Rarity away from Spike...they didn't last long. Once the pair reached the edge of town, Spike lay down so he could speak quietly to the pony. “You have to keep this a secret but…I’m about to take my first sleep” Spike calmly whispered. “You mean…?” “Yes, my first long sleep...a hundred years or so." Spike paused for a moment to let that sink into Silk before continuing "Rarity cannot know, none of them can…saying goodbye to them would be too hard. I’ve waited to make sure that I see both Rarity and Rainbow Dash one last time, but I can’t put it off much longer. I have less than a day before I’ll be too tired to move…and I need to be far away from here for everypony's sake” Spike sighed. Having been told the news, Silk could now see the signs of tiredness in the usually glistening dragon eyes “I see…but why are you telling me?” “They are going to be devastated when they find out…after all it’s like me dying on them. Twilight knew this day would come, and she has Scarlet to comfort her. Rarity will take it hard but of course she has you. I’ll warn you, she’ll be mad that I didn’t tell her…that I lied and broke a promise I made a long time ago to not hide anything from her...ever.” “I sort of understand” the stallion replied, processing the news "Rarity has never been able to explain properly the connection between you two...but I know you two are very close. Of course..." he paused for a moment looking at the dragon that could easily rip him to peices "...I know you have feelings for her..." Spike nodded slowly in agreement, and allowed the stallion to continue "...but from what I understand you talked that out and there's nothing like that between you?" "Mutual honesty over my previous feelings has been the bedrock of our friendship for so long, but surely you know she loves you more than anything else...except thouse darling little foals of yours I guess!" This time it was the stallion who nodded in agreement. Spike very gently put a tip of a claw over Silk's shoulder “She’ll need you, now more than ever. I’ve always been something to help keep in touch with her Ponyville roots, and she needs that, they all do. Look after her, make sure she doesn’t work too hard and that she remembers to come home once in a while...Applejack misses her” Spike started to ramble, a churning sensation in his vast chest. “Still worrying about her? Don’t worry, I will Spike. And look after yourself. I hope one-day you can find a dragon that you can love as much as you do my Rarity. Perhaps when you wake up you’ll be able to meet up with our great great grandfoals or whatever…” The pair looked at each other in a quiet respect, before they nodded and both discreetly wiped away a tear before they started headed back. The rest of his friends, and their associated partners and foals, had already arrived outside the library by the time they had returned. Spike greeted the old gang with an unusual amount of emotion for the dragon, especially those that had travelled from outside town. “Oh Oh Oh, it’s time for the party!” Pinkie Pie let off some streamers, her first foal strapped to her back giggling in delight “Sweet Apple Acres is all set up for an outside hoedown so even Spike can join us! So lets get to it!” “You ponies go ahead, I have something to do first” The dragon let out a massive yawn “Don’t let me slow you…” The ponies walked, flew or bounced off towards the farm and with a heavy heart Spike spread his wings and launched himself into the air. Silk watched as Spike flew overhead, knowing that none of them would ever speak to the dragon again. He hated that he knew sometime soon he was about to have a distraught wife on his hands, but was honoured that the dragon had given him time to prepare. Sleep well, gentle Spike, and don’t worry I’ll try to love and protect Rarity as much as you did… Spike woke up and as soon as he rose a familiar belch sprung from his mouth. He ignored it and started to stretch out in his cave when within moments a blinding flash filled the cave, and when it faded two ponies had joined him in his lair. "Princess Celestia? Princess Luna?" "Good Morning Spike...sleep well?" the elder alicorn smiled at Spike, who had more than trebled in size during his speech . "Yes...what year is this?" the dragon replied. "You've been asleep for 102 years. We set an alarm to tell us when you awoke, I hope you don't mind?" "Not at all Princess" Spike yawned back "I guess you want to escort me away from Equestria's borders?" "Far from it, you are as welcome in Equestria, and the Crystal Empire, as you always have been. Our subjects have been told about your exploits at saving the nation on more than one occasion, and will welcome you as they always did" Celestia softly reassured the huge beast. "Just...don't try to sit on them!" Luna teased with a wink. Spike laughed for a moment, but then his face fell "My friends? Are they..." "Yes Spike, and we will fill you in on the wonderful lives they led! But, we promised to deliver this to you as soon as you awoke" and Celestia conjured up an old scroll and floated it over to Spike. The dragon unravelled it gently and squinted at the writing... Dear Spikey Wikey I am writing this a few months after you have left us, as the wounds are still fresh but enough time has passed to reflect properly. Taking the good news first, and I'm sure there will be a lot more between this letter and when you awake, but we're expecting another foal! I can't believe it buts it's really helped me put everything into a circle of life perspective. I want to scold you for just leaving like that, but Silk helped me understand that saying a permanent goodbye would be too hard. And I know that there's no way we would ever have let you go and you would have had us following you across the country to your new liar. It of course came as a shock to us all! Twilight took it quite well, as I guess she always knew her little baby would someday leave the nest. Pinkie coped how she always did, by throwing you a honorary going away party which really helped Applejack and Rainbow Dash move on. Fluttershy took the news much harder, as she realised that having come out of her shell to be around friends would sometimes mean saying goodbye. And then that just leaves me, and I have a pain in my heart. But it's not the pain of losing our friendship, or never seeing you again, it's a pain that your last act was to protect us, and probably me, as much as possible. You were always far too kind towards me Spike, especially for what I gave in return. As the element of generosity, I was so selfish when it came to you. I should have forced you to move on from much from a much younger age but I never did as I wanted you as a friend. But perhaps I can do in death what I could never do in life... Release you. Go Spike, Go find a dragoness to love and have hatchling with. Live your life! You've held back, no doubt for all of us but espcially me, for far too long and whilst it's been a wonderful ride, it's time for you to start a new Journey. Go, find her, love her like you love me Be happy Spikey Wikey Rarity Bow Tears had been escaping from the dragon eyes from about halfway through the letter, but the dragon had grown mentally as well as physically in his first growth sleep. Celestia and Luna stood in respectful silence as the dragon crawled to the entrance to the cave "It's a brand new world out here...and it's time to find my true place in it!" Author's Note Leaving the love of your life in the capable hands/hooves (whatever) and knowing you will probably never see them again? Thats the hardest thing in the world... I added the second part of the Epilogue just to show Rarity isn't heartless as some may think!
