Alright here's like a week of hard work! After writing another brief clopfic before, I consider this story a spiritual successor to Keeping You Safe. That one was a lot more clop heavy than this. This does have a few parts here and there, but it's more focused on the story and characters. DON"T LET THAT SCARE YOU AWAY. It's all for the best as I hope the pay off is worth it. Anyways enjoy!
Crushed Heart Mixed with Snow Flakes
“Just leave!” the mare yelled out and pointed out the door. Lightning Dust hung her head low and muscles refused to budge from the spot in the warm house. Krystal was her closet friend, and well…maybe her last friend.
If she was forced to move from her spot in her friends house she knew her heart would break, it would be left in Krystal’s house. Lightning
There was nothing but spite in her voice now. Whatever friendship was left for Lightning Dust was now thrown out in the cold and soon so would Lightning Dust. Tears flowed from Lightning Dust’s eyes now, slowly her hoof raised in front of the other and she made her way toward the door.
Krystal could not have her out any faster and without checking to see if the pony had made it all the way out, she kicked the door with her hind legs with such force, that the door connected with Lightning Dust’s rump and caused her to go flying. She fell into the snow and her face was pushed into the white fluff.
Immediately her body began to shiver as the cold connected with her skin and her thin body offered no warmth for her, this was one of the times when her athletic body betrayed her. Her shivering did not stop the tears however as she pushed her face into the dirt even more to try and soften her sobbing.
Since her time being kicked out of the Wonderbolts academy, it had been extremely difficult to find other means to keep herself supported. She tried to look for jobs in weather departments, however because of the special magic in her wings it caused yellow particles powder down onto the clouds, thus being soaked into the rainwater and scattering glitter over towns and cities. The very thing that made her different and what she thought special, now only worked against her.
Unfortunately Lightning Dust did not have any other talents. She spent her whole life training her body and skills to become an athlete like a Wonderbolt, she didn’t consider trying to focus on studies or continue more advance schools for pegasi. When she couldn’t find any other work and eventually was going to be kicked out on the street, she began imposing herself on her friends from childhood.
She felt awful doing so and swore to herself the first time that she would find a way to support herself and move out. It didn’t work out that way and she also didn’t have her parent’s… around…anymore. Anyways, eventually her friend HoneyBun could not house her anymore and Lighting Dust moved on to the next one. Yet as this tread began she slowly saw friends disappearing and loosing contact.
She hated to do it, but she was eventually forced to ask her dearest friend Krystal to hold her up. Krystal with a heart of gold gladly took her in. Then as the days turned into weeks, Lightning Dust was loosing hope and motivation, and Krystal was loosing her patients. The scene earlier was Krystal finally running out and now Lightning Dust had nowhere to go.
The cold was setting in even faster as minutes went by and snow was eventually piling on top of her. Maybe this is what she deserved Lightning Dust thought. Maybe this is what she got for letting her ego get in her way and ruin the one thing she was actually good at.
This was her punishment for taking advantage of her friends. She thought of just lying there until the snow covered her completely and she died of frostbite. Suddenly an idea formed in her head, she remembered her ego got in her way. There was possibly one pony left in the entire world that might take her in, at least for a little. She stood up letting the snow fall off of her and she looked toward the sky. If there was any possibility at all it was rested in her.
She walked forward a bit, her movements slow and painful not only due to the cold, but also her heart was just not in her to continue on. Yet if there was one thing left she had it was will power, and it pulled her forward even more commanding her wings to spread open. Yet her wings were unresponsive and stayed glued to her body.
They were too frozen to even open, so she decided she’d have to begin walking toward her destination. While it wasn’t impossibly far, it wasn’t exactly close either. As she walked through the snow that nearly white washed the entire land she couldn’t stop thoughts from creeping in feeling sorry for herself. Even if she got through this, she didn’t know what she’d do. No place was willing to hire her and she wouldn’t keep a job long enough to get any real footing.
These thoughts continued as she trekked on and did nothing but weigh her down. After roughly three hours of walking she looked up and saw the house among the clouds that might save her. She looked at her wings and tried to open them once more, yet like before they were sealed shut to her body. She had to figure out a way to try and get them warm. Lightning Dust looked around and saw nothing that could provide any heat for her.
An idea came to mind and soon she was digging away the snow from the ground beneath her. The snow was stacked high and after three feet of digging she finally struck the frozen grass below. When her hoof attempted to touch the soft green material she was only met with a barrier of ice. Shit, she thought. However she’d gone this far and her will was still strong.
She began bucking the grass as hard as her frozen joints would let her to try and break the ice. Over and over again her legs bucked and bucked. She could feel her muscles starting to shut down and bruising starting to form on her legs, but she continued to fight through the pain. She heard a crack and saw that she made a giant slit in the ice.
Again and again she kicked at the edges of the break, chipping off sheets of ice little by little. She cleared enough of the way for her to start digging a hole in the ground. She dug and dug and eventually pain was coursing through her body now. She looked at her front hooves and saw they were cut and bleeding. She looked back down at her hole and saw the thing she needed most: dirt.
She flipped onto her backside and started rolling around rubbing her wings as rigorously as possible. While the dirt was still cold in itself if was more importantly dry, and if she could get her wings dry then she might be able to move them and warm them up. More and more she pounded her back against the ground removing the ice crystals that had formed.
Then she stood up and looked back at her wings once again and tried to move them. They were slow aching, but they were able to extended fully and this gave her a little hope.
Come on, come on!” she grunted as she flapped her wings slowly against the cold wind that threatened to shut them once again. Pain had enveloped her body, lactic acid was building up in her muscles and she did not have long before she’d pass out and be covered completely by the snow. Her wings gained momentum and soon she felt the slight propulsion upwards.
She flapped harder and harder and her mind was starting to get fuzzy and dizzy. Yet it was either now or never and she promised herself at that moment if she found a way out of this, then she’d do whatever it took to pay it back to the great angel that protected her. She bent down like a spring and flapped her wings has hard as she could force them to go. She said one last prayer in her head and in a crack of thunder and spark of dust she launched herself into the air like a cannonball.
The snow and ice pelted her face like bullets against her skin and she could barely open her eyes to steer. The winds were nearly forcing her off her course and send her crashing to the ground, but she knew at this height she’d fall to her death.
Lightning Dust’s momentum was swiftly draining, but her target was within reach, she needed a little more of a push. Her wings were nearly frozen once again, but she dug deep. Deep inside her soul, past her broken heart, past her dreams and past even her will to live.
She didn’t know what she had found deep deep inside her, but it was strong enough and she managed to make it onto the soft cloud that was supporting the home in the sky. The winds shifted and forced her straight into the door of the building. Lightning Dust hit her head straight against the door and she fell down looking up at the fierce storm contrasted by the sideways flowing rainbow fountain.
It was a funny thought that such chaos could stand next to such beauty. Lightning Dust’s mind was darkening and that this was it. She would die here at the door to salvations so close and yet so far, but how fitting it seemed as her whole life reflected that fact.
“Who could even be out here- Oh my Celestia!” she heard a faint voice say. It was too late, she closed her eyes and everything went dark.
Slowly but surely eventually noises began to flood Lightning Dusts mind. She felt the warm sheets that surrounded her body like a cocoon; she also felt the chill in her spine that seemed to spread throughout her body.
Her muscles aced immensely and any small movement was treated like picking up a boulder. She didn’t know where she was exactly she assumed a bed by the blanket material, but no matter how hard she tried her sight would not come to her. She moved her head slightly to judge that she still had a head and that she wasn’t just going crazy, and soon she started to hear voices.
“She’s incredibly lucky. About thirty more minutes out there and she would have died for sure.”
“Was there something else I could have done Twilight?”
“No you did everything you could, you did a great job. I would have liked to get to her sooner, but that storm took a long time to die down. Her exhaustion nearly doomed her as well, but I managed to use a few spells that helped out and stopped her body from eating away at her muscles and moving to her organs.”
Lighting Dust wanted to move and get up now that she heard other voices. She struggled against the covers, but her ligaments were too sore to do much. She grunted and panted trying to roll herself out, and eventually her voice started to work as well.
“Ahhhh-heee---help! Please!” her horse voice called out into the blackness.
“She’s waking up!” She heard the rustling of hooves coming toward her and felt the presents of two bodies next to her.
“Please-ow…what-”
“Don’t talk!” said one of the voices. “You need water here.” She felt a plastic object touch her lips and she began sucking in instinctively like a little foal. The water touched her mouth and slid down the back of her throat like soothing nectar.
Nothing ever tasted so good in her whole life and it was just plain water. Eventually she got her fill and stopped sucking, the plastic object was taken away and she could speak more clearly now.
“Where am I?”
“You’re at my place Lighting Dust, I found you last night after you blew in.” Said the deeper voice.
“Rainbow Dash?”
“Yeah, who else?” she said jokingly.
“Rainbow Dash! I’m here as well Lighting Dust my name is Princess Twilight Sparkle,” said the gentler voice.
“Princess?” Lighting Dust asked.
“Yes.”
“Why can’t I see?”
“We have a blind fold on your eyes right now. When you banged your head on Rainbow Dash’s door you hit your visual cortex located in the back of your brain. Thank goodness you only bruised it and didn’t do any permanent damage, yet for the moment you’re sight is injured so it’ll take some time for it to come back completely.”
“So can I take off the blindfold?”
“No, straining your sight right now will only make it worse.”
“Can I take a peek, please?” She heard Twilight sigh at her and Rainbow Dash chimed in, “Come on, a little peak won’t hurt anything.” There was a pause as she could tell Twilight was seriously thinking it over.
“Fine, just a brief glance you understand? Like I said your sight is damaged so it may be spotty or blurry.” She said putting her hoof on the blindfold. Then a flood of white light shone through Lighting Dust’s eyes.
It was blinding and she turned away from pain, yet as she looked back she could see nothing more than a dark blue and purple blur. The blindfold was put back on and she rested her head again. Lighting Dust gave a big sigh and said,
“So, what happened?”
“We were gonna ask you the same thing!” Rainbow Dash answered.
“Indeed. You’re body was completely exhausted, you’re cells began eating away at your muscles because you had nearly no body fat left. Also you’re recovering from the effects of stage two hypothermia, luckily Rainbow Dash wrapped you in blankets and put you by a fire, or that could have done some irreversible damage.”
“So how bad is it?”
“We’ll I’m not gonna say everything is honkey dorey, because it’s not. You’re muscles will take years to heal to return too normal and the cold caused you to rip both tendons in your wings. Those are going to take quite a bit of time to heal as well and even at that they won’t be as strong as they use to be. All said and done you’re alive and stable, that’s the most important part.”
“How did you end up out there, how’d you get here?” Rainbow asked as Lightning Dust felt tears welling up as the thoughts of before were flooding into her mind. She didn’t want them to see her cry and possibly do something to affect her sight. So she simply said, “I’d prefer not to talk about it right now.”
“Maybe that’s for the best, you need to get your rest. I’ve got to leave for a bit and let Spike know I didn’t just disappear in the night. Come on Rainbow Dash I’ll finish telling you a few things.”
“Okay, hey if you need anything just give me a yell. I’ll be right over.”
“Okay.” She heard Twilight and Rainbow Dash start the leave the room, but she caught them before they were out the door.
“Thank you,” Lighting Dust piped up. They both turned back and then looked at each other.
“Of course.”
“It’s nothing.” They were gone and Lighting Dust was left with nothing but her own thoughts and darkness. Broken. That’s all that ran through her head. That’s what she was. She couldn’t move, She couldn’t see and worst of all she didn’t know what was next. They would never put her up forever, and soon ask her to leave as well. She started to think maybe it was better to stay in the cold and let the snow bury her the easy way.
Lighting Dust wasn’t sure how long she had been asleep, but pure exhaustion had forced her mind to shut off. She felt a pressure at the other end of the bed and spoke up.
“Rainbow Dash?”
“Hi, Twilight told me that you needed rest, but you also needed to eat so I’ve got some soup here and I’m gonna help you sit up.” A hoof slipped underneath her and she did her best to put herself up. The covers were slipped off, but even putting the smallest about of pressure on her hind hooves caused a surge of pain. They shook violently and Rainbow Dash switched to using both of her hooves to raise her up against the bed.
She was finally sitting up right and even with the blindfold the world began spinning. It took forever for it to stop and Rainbow Dash was extremely patient, which was unusual for her.
“Here dude I’m going to feed you, that would be easiest.”
“Oh-okay then.” She heard the clattering of the spoon against the bowl and then the warm metal pressing against her lips. She let it in and sipped up what tasted like vegetable soup.
It could have urine really and it probably would have tasted good enough, because she was extremely hungry. Lighting Dust felt weird being fed like a baby and was slightly embarrassed. It must have showed because Rainbow Dash tried to spark conversation.
“So you must have gotten even faster since I last saw you huh? I mean you left a pretty good dent in my door and to even be going against the wind like that, man. You’d probably beat me in a race at my best.” Lighting Dust couldn’t respond thought. She couldn’t even fake the pride she once had. She felt bad for not answering, but she nodded and continued eating.
Finally she was finished and Rainbow Dash put the bowl to the side. She helped her to her back again and got up to leave. “Do you need anything else Lightning Dust?” There was a long pause, but eventually she answered.
“No, but thank you.” There was another long pause and she felt a hoof on her head. She rubbed her hoof along her head for a minute and left. It was a small expression of comfort, but Lighting Dust didn’t want her to leave.
She wanted her to stay and console her letting her know everything was going to be all right. It wasn’t, but even lies are soothing from time to time. Now tears flowed from her eyes and she didn’t care if it hurt. Not crying or feeling hurt just as much. Everything hurt, her heart was gone and her body was useless. Crying couldn’t equate to what she was feeling, but it was close.
Two weeks went by with Lightning Dust unable to care for herself. After the first week she could sit up by herself, barely. By the second week she could shuffle to the bathroom with aid by Rainbow Dash.
She still did not reveal how she ended up in this state for fear Rainbow Dash would emotionally block her off and cease taking care of her by the goodness in her heart and by pure obligation. Then again I guess she was also doing it out of obligation anyways, because she wasn’t going to throw out a blind crippled. Lighting Dust didn’t think anypony was that heartless...maybe.
She was also beginning to connect with Rainbow Dash as a friend. They manage to hold conversations during feeding time and after. She made her laugh and every time Rainbow Dash thought she was sleeping and rubbed her stomach through the blankets or brushed her hair out of her face, was special.
Rainbow Dash walked in and sat down on the bed. “Hi, how are you doing?” she asked.
“Just fine”
“Good, I was just checking up on you- and actually I wanted to ask something.” Lighting Dust dreaded those words, as she knew where the question was leading.
“What is it?”
“Well maybe you’d feel good enough to tell me what happened to you on the night of that storm?”
A cold sweat began to form in the base of Lightning Dust’s spine. She couldn’t tell her. It would be awful, she’d break down and cry before she even had a chance. Lighting Dust sighed and reached for Rainbow Dashes hoof. Luckily she grabbed it and held it for a moment.
“Rainbow Dash tell me truthfully. Do you only have one bed?”
“What?” Rainbow Dash was surprised and unprepared for such a response
“You live alone, so I’d assume you only have one bed. Have you been sleeping on the couch for my sake?”
“I-er, well I mean yes, but it’s really not that bad. I’ve gotten use to it you know?” She said with a humorous tone.
“I can’t force you out of your own bed like this anymore Rainbow Dash, it’ll eat me up inside.”
“It’s not a big deal really.” Rainbow Dash said knowing that she was just trying to dodge the question.
“No. Please, sleep in your bed tonight, I can take the couch just as easily.”
“What? No way dude I am not going to let something like that happen! You’re still injured.” Rainbow Dashed said defiantly. There was a pause and Lighting Dust said, “Fine then you’ll have to sleep in the bed with me.”
“Say what?”
“If you won’t trade beds then I’m still not forcing you out of yours. There’s plenty of room for both of us to sleep on, and if you refuse then I’ll sleep on the floor.”
“Lighting Dust- okay fine if you’re going to be stubborn about it.”
“Thank you.” She said smiling.
“Sure,” Rainbow Dash said as she got up. Once again she had avoided answering the o so daunting question. Yet if she wasn’t ready then she should, Rainbow Dash thought.
Later that night Rainbow Dash did exactly what Lighting Dust asked and crawled into bed with her. Their backs faced each other as they started to fall asleep. Her bed was much better than the couch Rainbow Dash thought.
Lighting Dust liked having the presents of somepony else, still not being able to take off the blindfold. Eventually her senses were lost and she felt as if she was placed in a pool of water. She floated on endlessly and looked at the moon and stars and she felt a bit of grace. This was the only time she could have the feeling of seeing things and she sorely missed being able to look at the world.
Her image of the stars was beautiful and the moon was so giant and huge, she wish one day to meet Princess Luna and see the fine crafters work. Eventually she looked over and saw her friend Krystal standing above the water with her back turned. Lighting Dust’s eyes widened and she kicked to flip herself over.
Somehow she found footing and turned herself over so that she was lying on her stomach.
“Krystal” she called again, but nothing. She tired walk over to her, but ever time she moved her hooves the floor from beneath her gave out and turned to water again. Lightning Dust struggled and kept trying, but it was no good. Finally there was a sound from the other pony.
‘lmmr,” she mumbled.
“What?” Lighting Dust asked.
“lmar,” she repeated.
“I can’t hear you!” Lighting said.
“Liar!” Krystal finally spat out.
“Wha-what?”
“Liar, you’re a liar.” She repeated.
“I- I don’t understand.”
“You’re nothing but a filthy liar and you don’t deserve mine, or anypony’s kindness!” Krystal said still with her back turned.
“I’m sorry Krystal! I truly am, I tried my best, I tried to change but it was no good!”
“Excuses. You chose not to.” Lightning Dust was no on the verge of tears, however Krystal began to turn around and what she saw frightened her even further. She did not see her friend Krystal’s face, but she saw Rainbow Dash’s instead.
“No, no, no, no, no, please oh god I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean it. You’re right you’re completely right!” The half Krystal half Rainbow Dash pony stood up, and began walking away from Lighting Dust.
This only sent her in a panic and she tried to paddle her way towards her friends, but she only remained thrashing about in place. The other pony continued to walk until she was a faint dot in the horizon of the never-ending black ocean.
“Please come back, I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry!” Lighting Dust cried.
Rainbow Dashes was jolted awake at the sudden grasp of the pony that lay beside her. Lighting Dust was holding on to her arm tightly and mumbled the words “I’m sorry, I’m sorry” over and over again. Rainbow Dash put a hoof on her and shook her awake.
“Lighting Dust, Lightning Dust!” eventually she jolted awake as well, but in more of a stir. She gasped and shot straight up, it took her a moment to compose herself and realize what had happened.
“Are you alright?” Lighting Dust didn’t say anything, she simple stared straight ahead into the blackness and then warm tears began to stream from behind her blindfold.
There was about thirty minutes of Rainbow Dash being able to do nothing but watch Lightning Dust cry and sob over and over. She rubbed her bad and hoof trying to calm her down and within time the tears stopped flowing.
“Did you have a bad dream?” Rainbow Dash asked. Lighting Dust nodded her head and sniffled a bit.
“Was it about what happened to you?” Lightning Dust paused for a second and she felt tears coming back as she knew she’d now finally have to tell Rainbow Dash.
“What happed? You can tell me.” Rainbow Dash pleaded. Lightning Dust took a deep breath and finally let it allow spew out. She told her from the events of being kicked out of the academy to being thrown out of her best friends house. It took over two hours due to long pauses of sobbing.
Finally she told Rainbow Dash up to the current day and looked at her with fear. Rainbow Dash looked away at the bed for a while and stared hard.
“I don’t know what to say. That’s just awful.” She muttered. Lightning Dust sat there exhausted from spilling out all of her emotional struggle and lack of sleep. Yet Rainbow Dash said something that completely caught her off guard.
“And all of that, was because of me.”
“What?” Lighting Dust exclaimed.
“You wouldn’t have had to go through all of that if I didn’t get you kicked out of the Wonderbolts Academy. You probably would have been picked up if you stayed.” Lightning Dust was in shock and could barely form words at such an accusation.
“No- Rainbow Dash- you didn’t do anything! It was all me, from the very start. I was cocky and big headed and I let my ego to me. I forced you to do the whirlwind and whatever came after that was solely by my own bad choices.” Rainbow Dash still looked down guiltily.
“Still if I didn’t talk to Spit Fire she wouldn’t have thought anything of it.” She said.
“Please Rainbow Dash don’t say things like that. You’ve already done so much for me, and I don’t know how on earth I’m going to pay you back, but I’ll figure out something.” Rainbow Dash looked at her concerned.
“No I feel like this is the least I can do for basically forcing you into this situation. Don’t worry about it. I won’t be kicking you out any time soon.” Oh no, Lighting Dust thought. There it was, now she would be putting up with me just out of obligation.
Her lip began to quiver and she felt extremely dizzy. Just as she felt she was about to fall back onto the bed, she felt a warm embrace from her friend. Rainbow Dash hugged her tight and nuzzled her nose into Lightning Dust’s neck.
She rubbed her back softly and felt so warm. Lightning Dust couldn’t describe the feeling of her hug. It felt as if everything wasn’t over, it was comforting and tender something that no one had been able to make her feel in a very long time. She held her for an extended period of time, and then once she let go she guided her against the pillow again and rubbed her hoof along her face.
Lighting Dust reached out and grabbed her other hoof and held it tightly. She was afraid if she let go, she’d loose Rainbow Dash and would be forced back into her dark world.
“Rainbow Dash?”
“Yeah?” she responded.
“Can you hold my hand until I go to sleep?”
“Sure, not a problem.” She whispered. Lightning Dust dug into the bed and for once wanted herself to drift asleep. There was somewhat of a weight lifted up off of her shoulders.
In the following weeks Rainbow Dash continued going back to work at the weather control of Ponyville and Lightning Dust could be left by herself as her sight came back and she walked around with crutches.
Twilight would stop by now and again and Lighting Dust enjoyed their visits as she found her big brain fun to listen to. She would go on for hours about how pollen count in the air can affect the allergies and how if pegasi could use their wind power, they could control the direction and budding of flowers in the spring.
She was an incredible nerd, but she liked it anyways. Not being able to go out and exercise or anything her science made for decent entertainment. Lighting Dust began to worry though as the days went on.
She knew she was recovering faster and when she was completely well that would begin the countdown to her and Rainbow Dash’s ending friendship like what had happen with the others. Rainbow Dash came home one day exhausted from a days work.
“How was your day?” Lightning Dust asked.
“Freaking rough, the ponies at the cloud factory had a renegade machine that made it cloudy all day and with every cloud I got rid of two came in it’s place, it was a giant mess and took forever to fix.” She plopped down on the couch and laid her head back.
“Do you want some juice or tea or something?” Lightning Dust said walking up to Rainbow Dash.
“Sure some carrot juice would be good.” Lighting Dust got up and went into the fridge to get her juice.
“Then some of the other pegasi were freaking out because the clouds had some rain water mixed in and every time they kicked them lightning would crack.” Lightning Dust smiled and walked back over to Rainbow Dash handing her the glass.
Lightning Dust knelt down beside her on the floor next to the couch. She rested her head on the couch and watched Rainbow Dash. She gulped down half of her glass of juices and slammed it back on the table, and then she threw her head back once again and closed her eyes. Lightning Dust smiled as she watched her breathing and relaxing.
There were a few nights where she would wake up in the middle of the night and watch Rainbow Dash resting just for a minute as she longed to stroke her mane or face. Without thinking about it Lightning Dust started to stroke her legs that she had resting on the coffee table. Rainbow Dash smiled and shuffled a bit in her seat because it tickled.
Lightning Dust was excited that Rainbow Dash was letting her touch her. It was the first time that she did anything affectionate towards her and she wanted to do so much more. Lightning Dust rested her hoof on Rainbow Dashes thigh and thought to herself for a minute. She had never a steady boyfriend or went on very many dates before so it’s not like she had a complete stance on her sexuality.
General attraction appeared here and there to some colts and she found other mares to be pretty. However Rainbow Dash was completely different. She was her own protector and every time she was around she didn’t think about the pain.
To Rainbow Dash she was just simply taking care of Lightning Dust and doing what she needed, but to Lightning Dust she felt the love and care put into her time and energy. It evolved and the more she put in the bigger her love grew. She really did love Rainbow Dash and at times like this found her sexy and beautiful even.
She was even embarrassed to admit she found herself attracted to Twilight as well. Both physically and emotionally, as there was just something about her vast knowledge and deep concern for her friends that was irreplaceable.
Then again Lightning Dust thought maybe there was something wrong with her. Rainbow Dash would probably never even think about being with another mare, and Twilight? The thought of relationships or intimacy probably doesn’t even register on her spectrum.
“Rainbow Dash?” Lightning Dust asked.
“Mhm,” she hummed still having her eyes closed.
“I think we should talk about how I’m going to pay you back and stop piggybacking you.” Rainbow Dash opened her eyes and looked down at Lightning Dust.
“Why would we do that? I told you, you don’t need to pay me back for anything. I consider it my fault-”
“Rainbow Dash please! I know you’re heart is in the right place, but I can’t keep mooching off of you like I am. I’m almost completely recovered and if I don’t put myself to work somehow you’ll start to become annoyed with me.”
“No I wouldn’t-” Rainbow Dash began, but was cut off again.
“Everypony’s patient runs out eventually. It’s only a matter of time and I don’t want to loose the very last friend-” Lightning Dust stopped and looked down. Rainbow Dash didn’t say anything for a bit and Lightning Dust saw that she had spilled juice on the table after plopping it down.
She grabbed a tissue nearby and wiped it up. She got up to throw it away when Rainbow Dash said, “Well what were you thinking?” Lightning Dust opened the trashcan and threw the tissue into it. That’s where Rainbow Dash got her.
She had taken many an odd job, but through most of them she ended up getting fired. There had to be something else that she could do that she couldn’t think of. Like a switch something clicked into her mind and thought maybe it could work.
“Wait, what if I was like a servant to you?” Rainbow Dash was taken aback and looked curiously at Rainbow Dash.
“Huh? Like a maid or something?”
“Basically, you know someone to clean around the house do whatever it is you need me to do or whatever you want me to do.” Lightning Dusts heart began to race now and she felt her breaths becoming steeper.
Part of her desire was just so that she would be tied to Rainbow Dash in some form and the other was for her to have control over her. She owed her, her life and the only was she thought she could make up for it would be to do her bidding.
Rainbow Dash’s face contorted a bit and she responded. “Would you really want to be some sort of cleaning mare looking after me?”
“Sure why not? I mean you looked after me for nearly two months and it would a fitting way to pay you back.” Rainbow Dash thought again for a minute raising her hoof to her chin.
“Well, it would be nice and you’re right it would be fitting, but think about it. It’s only you and me living here and I don’t live in a mansion or anything. Cleaning and cooking would be pretty easy just between us. You’d end up more like a house wife than a maid.”
Lightning Dust felt sweat form at the peak of her head now. Rainbow Dash comparing her to that got fantasy thoughts racing through her mind, but she had to block them out and think of something else.
“Hmm,” Lightning Dust said. Then another idea struck, “What if I also help your friends?”
“Well I can go over to their houses and help them clean and cook if needed and live here. I won’t have to get any money since it’ll be like I’m paying for the food and space I use here.” Now Rainbow Dash thought hard again.
“Well, I guess between seven mares and six different houses it would offer more work to keep you busy. I’ll talk to Twilight and the rest of them to see what they say.” Lightning Dust was chipper now and she walked back over to Rainbow Dashes side at the couch. She gave her a smile and Rainbow Dash responded with a smile back.
“But you know, I’d still be your-uh I mean as a servant- maid uh to help you mostly, heh.” Lighting Dust stuttered and put her head on the couch in embarrassment. Her face got hot and she knew she was blushing, she felt a hoof comb through her hair and it made her smile.
Although she could not see it Rainbow Dash was smiling too.
The Clothes Make the Maid
There was a knock at the door and Twilight answered.
“Oh hi Rainbow Dash, how is everything?” she moved aside to let Rainbow Dash in.
“Everything is fine Twilight, though I wanted to get your advice on a few things.”
“Well sure is it about Lighting Dust?” They walked over the Twilight’s couch and sat down.
“Yeah it is. She’s really pushing me to let her try and work. She says she’ll feel bad if she didn’t do something to make up for us treating her, but I told it was no big deal.”
“Hm, interesting” Twilight put her hoof against her chin.
“I’m afraid that she might try to leave if she thinks she’s too much of a burden. What should I do?” Twilight thought for a minute.
“Well I guess the only sensible option would be to let her work.”
“I know Twilight, but it just feels strange. I mean I still think it’s my fault most of this happened to her anyways.”
“I told you not to-” Twilight began but was cut off.
“I know I know, just still…” she said looking down at her hooves. There was a pause for a minute and then Twilight spoke again.
“From what you told me, she still has a ton of guilt from living with her past friends before and them kicking her out correct?”
“Sure does.” Twilight paused and gathered her thoughts.
“Well I think helping you out will be her way of atonement.” Rainbow Dash looked at Twilight curiously and then asked.
“Atonement?”
“Yeah you know, a way to make up for things. She’s gathered all this guilt from the past and her one way to let it all go is through you.”
“Did she say anything on how she wanted to pay you back?”
“That was the other thing I wanted to bring up. She said she wanted to be my servant-er I mean maid. She wanted to be my and clean up for me and stuff. Then I told her that wouldn’t be a whole lot of work, so than she suggested to helping out all six of us. You, me, Rarity, Pinkie and Fluttershy.”
“That makes sense.” Twilight said as she started to see a pattern.
“What does?”
“Well if she suggested being a servant, its so that other ponies could have control over her and tell her what to do. It’s like a form of self-punishment, she wants to put herself in a position to be used so that she feels not only functional, but also to do work that in a way humiliates herself.”
“Whoa, whoa hold on Twilight. What do you mean humiliate?”
“Well think about it. For the longest time she was a great athlete like yourself and she didn’t know anything else. She could always count on being the strongest, best and fastest so eventually that leaked into her personality. Now that she’s fallen away from that having to serve someone or take orders would be pretty embarrassing. Like if you had to clean somepony’s house.”
Rainbow Dash looked down and thought hard about what Twilight was saying. She knew she was right of course, because the thought of herself “serving” someone else would sting her pride quite a bit.
“But Twilight I don’t want to make her feel bad.” Rainbow Dash responded.
“It’s not like you’re making her eat dirt or anything, she’ll just be helping out a bit and that’s just something she would never had thought she needed to do. She might feel a little bad at first and nervous, but it’ll take away the guilt little by little. Then maybe when she’s had enough and has forgiven herself, she may want to stop and go elsewhere.”
Twilight gave a soft smile and tried to make Rainbow Dash see what she meant. Rainbow Dash laid her head back on the couch and thought for a bit. All this guilt and emotional stuff were things she was really not good at.
Of course Twilight probably read a book on it and knew all the technical terms and processes, but it didn’t feel as easy as a math problem. Yet, Rainbow Dash thought, if it’ll help her out why not? It’s not the worst thing.
“Okay so what do I have to do?” Rainbow Dash finally asked.
“Well you’ll just kind of have to order her around really. Give her a list of chores that she’s got to accomplish when you’re away and when you’re there try to make her feel useful by getting you a drink or cooking you food. You’ll kind of have to make her pamper you.” Rainbow Dash let out a groan and started to rub her head with her hooves.
“This isn’t going to be awesome.” Twilight smiled and put her hoof on her friends shoulder. Twilight knew that sometimes Rainbow Dash could be bossy and order ponies around, but it was something else when it wasn’t in the moment or toward some clear goal. She’d figure it out and get comfortable anyways.
“We’ll get the others together later and talk about what she’ll do.” Rainbow Dash nodded and slunk to the floor.
A few days later Lighting Dust woke up earlier and started to prepare herself for the first day of work. Twilight had been kind enough to give her a few books on being a mad how the conduct should be between a servant and their ‘mistress.’ Lightning Dust blushed a bit thinking about having to call Rainbow Dash that. Then she opened the closet and saw the uniform waiting for her.
Again she blushed, but this time harder as she grabbed the dress and began to slip it on. Rarity had also been kind to make the dress for her as it would help make the job feel a little more real. She had the dress on and pulled down on the skirt.
It was extremely ruffly and just a bit too short. Rarity designed it with a slip in place so that wind or other things wouldn’t blow it up. Although at the right angle or if she bent down it would show her underwear. She slipped the cuffs onto her hooves and she started to roll up her tights.
They looked like fishnets, although Lightning Dust complained to Rarity that they were too uncomfortable and the shoes she selected were like concrete. She was happy to accommodate Lighting Dusts request, yet Lightning Dust thought Rarity was confused and maybe wanted to make lingerie. Her tights were attached to rubber soles on the bottom of her shoes, which gave her unreal traction.
They felt similar to the Wonder Bolts uniforms. Finally to add the candle on top she put on the headband that pushed her hair back. She looked at herself in the mirror and blushed again. She actually felt cute wearing the outfit and an image of flashing Rainbow Dash her underwear made her squeal softly.
‘Get to work’ she’d say and give her a slap on the rump. Lightning Dust dust shook her head out of her fantasy and moved to the kitchen. She had to prepare breakfast for Rainbow Dash and wake her up for work. She moved to the kitchen and started whipping up pancakes and oats for Rainbow Dash.
In her head Lighting Dust felt like a newly wed making the first breakfast during the honeymoon. When she finished she crept into Rainbow Dash’s room and prepared for Rainbow Dash to get up. She watched her chest rise and fall slowly as she was in a deep sleep.
The alarm went off next to Rainbow and Lightning Dust gave it a brief minute to ring before she shut it off. Rainbow Dash moaned and grunted awake, stretching out her body along the bed. Lightning Dust waited patiently until Rainbow Dash opened her eyes and locked with Lightning Dust.
“Whoa.” She muttered as she rubbed her eyes and forced herself upright.
“Uh…good morning Rai-M-Mistress.” Lightning Dust stuttered out. “I have um…prepared breakfast for you… when you are ready.” Rainbow Dash was definitely a slow mover in the morning, she tried to remember what Twilight had said during the group meeting, and that was to try and give her commands.
“Thank you-uh go- go wait for me in there.” Lightning Dust bowed and turned to leave, but Rainbow Dash cut her off.
“Lightning Dust uh- you don’t really need to call me Mistress if you don’t want to.” Lightning Dust stared blankly a minute and responded.
“Well I read in my books that I’m suppose to do that, but if you wish for me not to than-”
“No, no, no,” Rainbow Dash cut her off. “If it doesn’t bother you, forget I said anything.” Lightning Dust smiled and walked out of the door.
“Dang it Twilight I know you said it’s part of her humility, but I’m the one whose starting to feel embarrassed.”
Lighting Dust waiting by the door for Rainbow Dash to come in. She had read the proper edict for serving and having a meal was for the servant to already have to food ready on the table, and to never sit down while the Master/Mistress was eating in order to be ready to serve some other way.
Rainbow Dash came in lazily, still weary-eyed. She paused for a second and looked between Lighting Dust and the table several times.
“Why aren’t you sitting down?”
“I shouldn’t in case you need something else.” Rainbow Dash paused for a second and shrugged her shoulders. She sat down in the chair and began eating breakfast. She could feel Lighting Dust awkward stare in the back of her head. Usually they ate breakfast together normally and held conversation, but this was not right.
“Could you come sit next to me?” Lighting Dust complied but instead of sitting down in the chair she rested on the floor next to her. Rainbow Dashed stared blankly at nothing for a moment then turned toward Lighting Dust.
“You could sit in the chair you know.” She said to her sarcastically.
“From what I read though, the servant should not sit on level with the Mistress due to-” Rainbow Dash cut her off,
“Okay, okay, okay, okay I get it. This- this is just gonna take some getting use to alright? For right now, I am ordering you to sit in the chair like usual.” Lighting Dust paused for a second and bowed her head then got up and complied.
As she sat in the chair though, her skirt moved up some and flashed Rainbow Dash her underwear for a second. Lighting Dust quickly crossed her legs to fix the issue and Rainbow Dashed blushed looking away pretending not to see.
The breakfast did not go as smoothly as they had both hoped, they did not say much to each other as Rainbow Dash finished up. She got up and began to get her plate and bowl, but Lighting Dust rushed over and picked them up for her.
“Please let me get that,” she said. Rainbow Dash willingly let go as that was her duty.
“Uh, okay there’s a list of items on the fridge that you need to do today, but if you get them done early. You can head over to someone’s house and ask them if they need anything. I’ll be back around five-ish so um…be here when I get back.” Rainbow Dash felt odd giving her orders, even though Twilight said to be commanding about it.
It wasn’t in her nature to order a friend around like this, and especially when it was…well basically fetishized. But if it helped her than Rainbow Dash would pull through.
“Yes Mistress, have a good day.” Lighting Dust said bowing to her as she left. Rainbow Dash opened the door and closed it on the way out. Lighting Dust remained bowed for a moment longer than collapsed on the floor.
“I am so awful at this!” she said to herself putting her hooves on her face. She had the outfit and looked the part and read all the material, but putting it in practice with a straight face and displaying seriousness was nearly impossible, especially to Rainbow Dash. She stayed on the floor for a little while longer and decided to get up and start her assignments.
Her tasks weren’t that difficult at all really even if she hadn’t cleaned around the house in forever it was still just two ponies. She managed to get the whole house cleaned around one o’clock and the dishes put away and making the beds by two.
Lighting Dust figured she could visit Twilight now and still have enough time before Rainbow Dash got back. This would be the first time she’d be flying since she arrived in Rainbow Dashes house, Lighting Dust was surprised that she didn’t go stir crazy from being inside for so long.
Twilight also told her that while her tendons we’re heald, they were far from racing strength so she couldn’t strain her wings. Lighting Dust dug her heels into the ground and began galloping toward the edge of the cloud and gave a great leap off, spreading her wings wide and started her decent downward. She decided she could just as easily glide down to Twilights from that height and distance, so she didn’t even need to flap her wings. Yet being in the hair again reminded her of better days, when she felt like super pony.
Breaking speeds few ponies could ever dream having the wind blow through her mane and face like it was caressing her. She did a barrel roll gently feeling the wind pass over her. She remembered that she was flying with her maid outfit on, and any pony who decided to look up could see up her skirt.
She flew up into the clouds for coverage and when she saw Twilight’s library she took a sharp dive to the door. The rubber was extremely effective at stopping on her mark. She knocked on the door and it took a bit for some pony to come to the door. Twilight answered and looked a bit shocked due to Lightning Dusts outfit, and blushed at her cheeks. “Oh hello Lightning Dust it’s good for you too stop by.”
“Oh, um thank you.” Lightning Dust responded. There was an awkward pause between the two for a long moment. Finally it clicked for Twilight.
“Oh I’m so sorry please come in.” Lightning Dust bowed and walked in ahead of Twilight, it was customary for servants that did not live in a particular house to be asked in before going in. Twilight walked past her and went into the study room.
She beckoned Lightning Dust to follow after her and she complied. It was natural for Twilight to have already read the book she gave Lightning Dust, so she knew of the procedure and customs. Also being a princess she had to learn how to give orders to workers.
“Okay well there is quite a lot to be done here today, so if you don’t complete it all don’t worry about it because Spike has been quite lazy!” Twilight said walking into her study room. Lightning Dust’s jaw nearly hit the floor when she saw the stacks of books and papers that littered her room. Some were nearly floor to ceiling and no pony could walk through without stepping on notes and loose leafs.
“Um- wow you’ve got a big project Mistress?” Lightning Dust asked nervously.
“Mistress- oh yes, yes of course. For now I’m researching biology so if the book does not pertain to that subject then you may put it back to where it belongs. I’m sure you can figure out the dewy decimal system right?” Twilight asked scooting in her chair.
“Ye-yes Mistress I can try.” Lightning Dust said bowing.
“Now it’s your preference, but you can either call me Mistress or Princess it’s up to you. I normally don’t let anyone call me that, however for your case I’m willing to make an exception,” Twilight said smiling.
“I-I suppose I’ll call you Princess then-er Princess.” Lightning Dust was getting more nervous by the minute. Twilight was definitely more use to this than Rainbow Dash so if she messed up she would surely know it.
“Very well then, now please go prepare some tea.”
“Yes Princess” Lightning Dust said as she bowed and walked out. She was shaking as she started to pour the tea into the teapot and set it on the stove. Lightning Dust sat watching the water boil and thought of the worst that could come out of this situation.
If she put the books back wrong Twilight would yell at her and tell Rainbow Dash, or if she caused her notes to be disorganized she’d tell Rainbow Dash. Each complaint that pointed to Lightning Dust being a failure was like another nail in her coffin. Lightning Dust took a deep breath and reminded herself that Twilight was not that mean, and the professional attitude she was using currently was purely for her sake. The tea was finally ready and she carried a cup and plate along with the pot to the study room.
Lightning Dust set the cup next to Princess Twilight and poured her a full cup. “Very good, now do me a favor and pour yourself a cup as well.”
“Oh, no thank you Princess I’m not thirsty-“ Lightning Dust began however Twilight calmly cut her off.
“I’m requesting you get a cup yourself and you can come set next to me before you start cleaning.” The way she said it so calmly forced Lightning Dust up quickly and returned with great speed.
She had never seen Twilight like this before and it unnerved her. Lightning Dust sat on the floor next to the Princess and Twilight said,
“You may sit on the other chair if you’d like, just move the papers to the floor.” She pointed at another chair that was barely visible.
“I’m fine Mistr-Princess. Thank you.” Twilight gave a giggle and that made Lightning Dust ease up a bit.
“So how do you like my professional Princess mode?” she asked with a wink. Lightning Dust gave a smile and looked down at her tea.
“If I am to be honest, quite intimidating.” Lightning Dust responded.
“Ha, Celestia has been teaching me quite well then. I know I still get a little unnerved by her infinite patients and calm exterior. Anyways tell me about your first morning, how’d it go?” Lightning Dust looked away ashamed and told her,
“Not very good. It was extremely awkward calling her Mistress and serving her. It would be a little easier if she kept a straight face about it, but you know how Rainbow is.”
Twilight gave a chuckle,“I certainly do, it will take some time to get use to it. You guys have been friends for a good time now and Rainbow Dash is extremely independent. It’s hard to realize you’ve got someone to work with when they’re there.”
“Yeah I hope she gets use to me like this, or I don’t know what I’m gonna do.” Lightning Dust said letting the sadness seep through a bit.
“I feel sexy if that counts.” Lightning Dust said lifting up her outfit, and caused both of them to break out into a laugh that lasted quite awhile.
“Thank you,” Lightning Dust said under her breath and blushing slightly. A compliment was dangerous from Twilight, as she didn’t want to fall hard for her as well.
“But honestly do you feel better? At least a little?” Lightning Dust gave a sigh and said,
“Not exactly. Maybe a little bit, but not much to make a big difference.”
“It’s going to take some time. Once things settle in you start getting in the mindset, your mind may be a little at ease.” Twilight put the tip of her wing under Lightning Dust’s chin and raised it to look her in the eye. Lightning Dust blushed hard and had to look away from her. She felt herself getting a little aroused, and with Rarities outfit that was going to be noticeable right away.
“Okay, you may get started then.” Princess said turning around to face her desk. Lightning Dust got up and gathered both cups. She bowed and was on her way.
Figuring out the Dewey Decimal system alone took Lightning Dust forever and by the time she needed to leave she felt as if she got nothing done. She apologized to Twilight and said she’d be over earlier tomorrow to try and finish.
Twilight of course told her not to worry about it and she started her journey back to Rainbow Dash’s. Lightning Dust replayed the days events through her head and realized they did not go as planned. She wanted Rainbow Dash to wake up and give her a pat on the head and compliment how good her breakfast was.
She wanted to have to spend all day washing the dishes and cleaning the house. Then even when she was exhausted she wanted to be there for Rainbow Dash to come home and order to cook and baby her, then when the time came collapse into bed.
While she was a bit tired, because of being inactive for so long, she was nowhere near where she wanted to be, and she knew Rainbow Dash would come home and be awkward again just telling her ot do stuff that wasn’t of any importance. Once again she felt useless, but she got inside of the house and looked at the clock. It was five minutes past five, and she knew Rainbow Dash would be coming home any minute.
She grabbed a glass of juice for her and placed it on the coffee table. She waited kneeling by the door for it to swing open. Minutes went by and Lightning Dust was beginning to get restless, however her books told her that a servant needed to wait for the Master/Mistress to come home to greet them.
Finally after what seemed like an hour the door handle started to jiggle and Rainbow Dash came tiredly through the door. She let out a bit groan and started heading toward the couch.
“Welcome home Mistress.” Lightning Dust said bowing her head. Rainbow Dash walked right past her and collapsed onto the couch, not before mumbling “Hey Lightning Dust.” She rubbed her temples and reached for the glass of juice. She gulped it all down and threw her head back.
“Arrgggg” she groaned out. Lightning Dust walked over and looked at Rainbow Dash for a moment. Fine, Lightning Dust thought if she wasn’t going to order her around she’d do whatever she thought was needed. She began massaging the top of her wing, working her hooves into its feather.
“Oooh, ow” Rainbow cried out tensing up. Lightning Dust stopped for a second and then Rainbow laid on the couch with her wings up in the air.

“I-don’t-think so.” She said eyes closed and half responsive. “Yet you’re awesome.” Lightning Dust blushed and continued working.
“I had to get these a lot to make sure my muscles wouldn’t tense up and they would grow more after working out. I learned a thing or two when they did it.”
“You sure did!” Rainbow Dash moaned as Lightning Dust found a really sore spot on her lower back. She scooted down and contemplated her next move, but Lightning Dust swallowed and decided to start massaging Rainbow Dashes glutes.

They again had tea before she started and Lightning Dust told Twilight of the massage and she was happy at least something worked out yesterday.
“I’ll have to get you to give me one of those sometime” she said giggling; Lightning Dust blushed and looked down at her tea. “I’m just kidding…mostly,” they both giggled this time and after Lightning Dust got to work and Twilight got back to studying. Having the Princess as someone to talk to and seek council made everything much easier.
Being able to fly had its advantage to putting the books back much faster and she actually managed to finish that day. Yet looking through the books she also looked for one or two romance novels. Twilight thanked her and said she could visit somepony else tomorrow. Lightning Dust flew home and again waited for Rainbow Dash to come home. They were two of the fastest pegasi in Ponyville; certainly it couldn’t take them very long to speed down here. Yet Twilight, Fluttershy, Rarity and AppleJack sat patiently waiting for them to show up.
Pinkie however…jumped around yelling out possible accidents that they could have encountered that would cause them to be late. From tornado’s to evil clouds Pinkie’s wild imagination thought of it and she bounced from bookshelf to bookshelf in Twilight’s library. Rainbow Dash stood waiting with Lightning Dust as they faced the door of the library. Lighting Dust shook a little bit nervously as she looked up at Rainbow Dash who was wearing a confident smile.
“Don’t sweat it, they’re our friends and they will be totally cool with whatever we do.” Lightning Dust gave a smile and look down, however as she did a wing came and covered her side. It felt secure and protective and while she’d never be able to match Rainbow’s confidence, she could definitely stand behind it. She took a deep breath and knocked at the door.
There was a brief pause and the door handle was fiddled a bit before the door opened.
