Chapters While AppleJack looked around for anything that would give signal to the source of the vandalism, she would pan out towards the ground looking for hoof prints.
“This just ain’t normal,” she thought to herself.
“What’s not normal!?!” A chipper voice would suddenly speak as PinkiePie pops from under a birds nest looking almost eye to eye with AppleJack. AppleJack was used to PinkiePie popping out everywhere so it wasn’t unusual not to be surprised. With the birds nest still on her head, PinkiePie would remove herself from the tree sitting beside AppleJack.
Retracing her steps as she would walk away from PinkiePie she would raise her hoof to point out the tree.
“Well, take a look.” AppleJack directed. Leaning over to get a better look to where AppleJack was pointing, PinkiePies head would tilt slightly confused. AppleJack would explain what she was to be looking at. “It looks like a beaver grew spider legs and chewed off all the bark.”
PinkiePie would appear tapping one of the branches and poking at the bare twigs. One of the bark stripping’s would become surrounded in a purple glow as it levitates from the ground.
“Have you found this on any other trees AppleJack?” TwilightSparkle would look intensively at the bark flipping it from side to side in the air with her magic.
“She says it was a spider beaver.” PinkiePie states.
“Oooh… I’ve never heard of a beaverspider before.” The soft voice would ring excitedly as Fluttershy stepped to look at the bark.
“Well, whatever it was, it doesn’t look like it ate any of the bark or the tree.” After analyzing the amount of bark left on the ground and shredded on the tree.
“Well, of course not silly, spiders don’t eat bark… They eat bugs.” Not missing a second PinkiePie corrects TwilightSparkle.
They all pause as they look at PinkiePie for a moment trying to make sense of what she was saying.
“It wasn’t no spider.” AppleJack huffed, stepping next to twilight. “What brings ya’ll out here anyway?”
“Well good morning to you too, AppleJack.” Rarity speaks trotting in with a lifted nose.
“Good mornin to you too Rarity,” AppleJack acknowledges.
“We were expecting to have a girls day, but it appears someone forgot the memo.” Replies as if giving AppleJack a calling out.
“Well, ya see, I have somethen I’ma dealin with right about now. So unless you’re fixin ta get yerself dirty, I may be a while.” AppleJack mocked back to Rarity, she had already done the dirty work but wanted to give a hintful detur with a lifted nose just to aggravate Rarity. Lifting a hoof over her face, Rarity grits her teeth to the thought. AppleJack, continuing to trot forward to where Twilight was analyzing the tree, slightly proud of herself with the comeback, looks over to Twilight with a bite of her lip facing the reality yet again.
“So, what do ya think Twilight? Any ideas?” AppleJack humbly asks, for Twilights help.
Putting a hoof to her chin, Twilight looks over the tree one last time. “You know, I am not really certain of what did this.” Looking to
Apple Jack, “But you know me, I can’t resist a good mystery,” Twilight smiles.
“Well, at least somepony is amused about this.” AppleJack sarcastically remarks, a little impatient.
“In the mean time…” Twilight looks up. “RainbowDash! You stay here and keep an eye out for anything that may come as a clue.” Rainbow Dash was being lazy, it was still early and she did not exactly want to wake up so instead she decided to bring along with her a comfortable cloud to sleep on till she HAD to wake up.
With a yawn RainbowDash waves, ”Alright, -yawn- take your time.”
AppleJack looked up at RainbowDash with a lifted brow then looked at twilight with a slight puzzle.
“Don’t ask, She’s been like this all morning.” Twilight informs, rolling her eyes.
“Spike was easier to get out of bed,” Turning to trot back to town.
“Spike,” Twilight shouts as everyone enters the library. Twilight had already started looking about her books as she entered. Spike on the other hoof had went back to sleep shortly after the girls left, he even had the quill pin still in his hand from writing the list Twilight assigned him to do just an hour or two before. Pinkie Pies eyes watered with joy as she stared over the sleeping spike.
“I had already done and tried talkin with Granny Smith. But she don’t seem to be thinkin all to focused today.” AppleJack talks to Twilight giving her all the information she had. “She did say something about the rubs. Though, not too sure what she meant about it.”
Walking to the otherside of the room and pulling out a couple books with her magic, “Well, it’s a place to start,” Twilight says, still a little enthusiastic about the mystery.
PinkiePies giggles could be heard as Rarity and AppleJack gathered around TwilightSparkle. “To Rub,” Twilight begins to read a list of definitions, “to apply pressure and friction to a surface. An abrasion left behind from the act of rubbing.” As Twilight read FlutterShys voice could faintly be heard in the back ground.
“I don’t think Spike would be happy about that Pinkie Pie.” Pinkie Pie simply giggles as FlutterShy warns.
TwilightSparkle continues to read the definitions, “To wear away at.”
“Pardon for stopping you Twi, But isn’t there a more practical way of figuring this out?” AppleJack interrupts, she was getting a little anxious. And sitting here going through books did not seem like it was going to be enough.
“We’re researching, what’s more practical than that?” Twilight adds with an attempt to put her a little bit at ease.
“I just don’t think books are going to be of any help to us this time.” AppleJack urges squirming lightly with the unrelenting desire to return to Sweet Apple Acres. “There just isn’t enough to go on to do that sorta thing.”
“Yes there is,” TwilightSparkle replies still trying to be optimistic. “We have the tree, and this bark.”
“I believe AppleJack is right,” Rarity says backing up AppleJack, “There is only but the crime scene. And just think, right now it’s only one tree. Just wait till it happens to all the other trees. Then, Oh My…” Rarity over announces adding a little sweat to AppleJacks face. “Then what is to become of SWEET APPLE ACRES?”
“Alright, thats enough.” AppleJack cries out to Rarity not wanting to hear anymore.
“You’re making me feel none better ‘bout it.” AppleJack muffles giving into Rarity. Then with a smile and a lift of her hoof, Rarity would accept the win.
Twilight would lower her head and groan as she herself admits defeat. “Fine, let’s go back and talk with Granny Smith.”
“Don’t reckon you’ll get much out of her.” AppleJack implies.
TwilightSparkle had already put her saddle bags on and was headed out the door.
“Well, were trying again. If you don’t like my books then we have only one option, and you even said she knows something.” Twilight had closed her ears and was the only one talking, she trotted out with a “lets move” attitude.
PinkiePie would lift with a smile, “Done!” Realizing she was getting left behind, “Oo.. Wait for me.” She darts back to the others before the door closes leaving Spike to sleep.
Back in Sweet Apple Acres, RainbowDash slept nestled into a comfy spot in the clouds high above the ground. The others had not yet returned and all that could be heard was the sound of a cute little pony snoring away. This would soon be interrupted by a scatter of birds that blew past her waking her from sleep and almost knocking her out of the cloud. Catching herself in flight she would watch the birds fly out into the sky. There was then a rustling rattle that turned her attention as she over looked the woods aside from the apple orchard. It came from within the forest and was not far from the orchard. This needed a closer look, carefully swooping over the woods where she heard the rattling she tried her best to look through the thick branches to the woodland floor. She was unable to see anything at first glance from where she was, she would have to go below the trees to see. Descending over the branches she pulls back on a cluster of limbs and leaves peeking through the opening through the trees. She could see clearly, but not what she was looking for. There was no trace of the sound. Dropping to the ground and stepping forward, looking side to side RainbowDash calls out into the forest.
“Show yourself, I know you’re in here.” Continuing to step forward looking around, her slight burst of courage and curiosity began fading the farther she made her way through the woods. It was very quiet and an almost omniscient shade hovered veiling the ground in a comfortable darkness easy for the eyes to relax but a little difficult to see.
“Don’t play with me…” A low grunt echoed through the trees forcing RainbowDash to hold her place. An antlered shadow would step into view and look down to the aggressive pegesi standing in a pose ready to maneuver. RainbowDash hesitated and simply watched the shadow stare. Stepping to a lighter shade of the woods the spines of his antlers would be the first seen as his forward chest comes into a light. The dark pine textured vest he wore blended well with the surroundings, giving a brighter glow to his bright green eyes that seemed to pierce her. On his hind was a symbol unfamiliar to her. It was unlike a cutie mark, instead seemed to emit a settle vibration when gazed upon. The closer she observed the mark the more it seemed to radiate. The moderately built stag quietly moves in her direction remaining a distance staying in her line of sight. RainbowDash could see his eyes, slowly rising. From the ground of her hooves his eyes would climb, gliding upwards along her nicely toned legs. Stepping around to her side, he gazed along her strong back line following the contour with each detail. RainbowDash remained still as he inspected her streamlined body. Keeping low to the ground with a strong glare locked onto him she could feel his gaze cross along the feather of her powerful wings. It was not as if a challenge was being made, however the look he gave as he lined each feather of her wings was just as interesting. Ruffling out her wings with a little flick, her volume would rise slightly showing them to be more grand than before. As he raised from her wings after lowering his eyes to her shoulders, she would loosen her neck with a faint arch exposing it, following his eyes as though pressing against a gentle touch. Dashes glare grew a grin as he followed the curvature of her neck. Then resting his eyes into hers for a brief moment, the stag would huff and slowly turn away. His eyes had wandered away is if there was nothing to see, he then made his way to a clearing entering a beaten path.
Standing straight with a drop of one ear, RainbowDash watched him walk away, pulling her head back slightly unsure. After a moment her eyes narrowed as she would finally dart after him. He did not go far as she quickly caught up to him, and stopped just a distance behind him. Sniffing in the air and to the ground, the stag would catch a glimps of her, yet would continue to do his thing seeming as if ignoring her.. RainbowDash was curious and sniffed the air as well, she did so in a casual manner but seemed more interested in his reaction than that of her own. There was a spicy, masculine, piney musk scent that blew in the wind, she was unsure about the odor but it wasn’t entirely unpleasant. She began to have a warm feeling from underneath as she watched the leaves blow for a moment. The silence was beginning to become deafening as RainbowDash stood questioning herself. Who was he? What was he doing? She had never seen him before, was he dangerous? It took her a moment to realize but, why was she still standing there? This thought was beginning to frustrate RainbowDash until she felt she had to break the silence. However, this did not happen, instead of speaking out her open mouth remained silent catching herself before she could speak. She felt a tightness in her throat deciding not to speak, she would continue standing and watching, biting her lip as the awkward moment was prolonged. There was a battle going on inside her mind and it was driving her mad, the little mare just couldn’t seem to think strait at all.
A steady mellow grunt left the throat of the stag as he turned to RainbowDash for a moment. She had been so spaced out for that moment that she would find herself now sitting. Realizing the full force of the awkwardness, she would look at the puzzled expression from the stag. In a slight pause as they looked at each other, RainbowDash would vanish in a gust of wind and head for the clouds. The instant take off was so fast some of Rainbows color remained for a moment lingering in the air, as the silhouette finally dispersed in the gust of the wind.
The stag began to step away once more as Rainbow Dash hid in the clouds above. She watched him from a distance feeling the hesitation in her muscles. What was she doing? She couldn’t figure herself out. In the chaos of her thought and a little blush she lightly shouts out, “What is wrong with me?” Lying on her back and covering her face she lets out a frustrated growl once more and wipes her face down with a stretch. Having another quick thought in her mind she turns over and carefully peeks over the cloud attempting to locate him once again. He was making his way back through to the deeper part of the woods, she had to be quick. Looking forward and finding the next cloud she darts and hides moving closer with an almost mission impossible theme.
The light brown stag circled the small clearing, his nose exploring the area. Rising up quickly as a whip of a branch smacks somewhere in the woods, his ears perked to the sound suddenly scoping the trees.
Rainbow would see him turn as his split hooves slid into the ground, her head retracted as his antlers dropped. A larger stag, darker and deeper toned, had caught sight of his location and was now hurling his weight in a deadly charge at him. Dashes eyes widened as she watched the set of knife like tines barrel in his direction.
The smaller stag remained in place as the larger quickly approached, Rainbows eyes narrowed as she quickly busted through the cloud throwing herself like a rocket. Unable to change her angle she rams her body, slaming the side of the charging stag taking him off his feet and sending him crashing into the thicket.
The impact had stirred up leaves and dust for a moment, but as it began to settle the mare would find herself stunned from the hard impact and would be left slightly disoriented.

Chapter 3: What in the Rut?
The loud crash could be heard from the farm house as everypony looked that way.
“RAINBOW!!!” AppleJack shouted. Everypony knew it came from her direction and the loud thundering crash had alarmed them all. Without speaking they all understood what to do as they ran as fast as they could to where they had left RainbowDash.
“Twilight!” AppleJack spoke not even looking away from the path before her.
“Way ahead of you.” Twilight replies.
Twilights horn would begin to glow as she ran, then with a little burst of light would disappear.
******************************************************************************
RainbowDash would moan lightly as she managed to make it to her hooves. She had not fully thought it through and struck the stag harder than intended. Trying to collect herself Rainbow fans away some of the dust and leaves with her wings, however in doing so revealed the green eyed stag charging her way with antlers lowered.
RainbowDash felt a swelling ball in her throat and her face would fall in sight of the antlers being turned on her. With a shocked step backwards, she would fall back to her plot in the tracing gaze of her coming demise. She would attempt to swallow as she closed her eyes, the thoughts crossing her mind. Twilight had appeared not far and watched the stag come just a couple meters from her. Twilights mouth would open with slight terror, then at an instant would stop in his tracks.
Gently opening one eye realizing she was still alive, RainbowDash opens to the sight of him now standing broadside looking down as his shadow casted over her with a dominating glare. With a huff from his muzzle he turns and looks to the direction where the other stag had been taken down. He was gone, only a broken tine remained behind, being unhappy of the situation those green eyes would again put an overwhelming heavy force against her as he would step away keeping his glare till the last moment. Disappearing into the underbrush giving one last glare, his eyes would fade into the mid shadow as he then stepped out of sight.
Twilight would quickly make her way to Rainbows side, consoling her with a gentle touch. She could see the devastated look in RainbowDashes eyes and knew she needed to be delicate for the time being. Rainbow was unable to avert her sight from the direction in which he departed as Twilight would help the slightly injured mare to her feet. Her movements were slow and had a slight limp to one hoof and one of her wings sagged just lightly. Stepping from the woods into the clearing of the orchard, the others arrive to see Rainbow injured and silent with her head lowered. There was a gasp as they came together; Twilight spoke softly with a simple request of helping her back. As Rarity and Fluttershy stepped with a gentle cradle helping her back to the farm house, AppleJack would turn to the woods with her hat lowered, hiding a raging glare that none had yet seen.
Before stepping away to follow the others AppleJack would let out under breath a threat pride.
“By the Apple Family name, ya just earned yerself a can of kilkenny whoopass.” Turning back away from the tree line AppleJack would continue to follow the others to the farm never once raising her hat above her eyes.
!!BAMM!!! The door entering the barn would open and slam against the side of the wall shaking the tools and other nik-naks that hung. AppleJack would enter startling BigMac, who had been tossing bales of hay on to a truck to be pulled to the pasture.
Surprised at the entry after retrieving his composure, BigMac would approach her with a lowered brow. He knew she had been upset from this morning but to be riding on it this long, it needed to stop. He was unaware at what had recently occurred and did not understand that things had gone farther than simple vandalism.
“AppleJa….”
“NOT A WORD, BigMac…” AppleJack demanded as she hooved her way to the coiled rope and yanked it from the wall ripping its holder from the wood plank.
BigMac went wide eyed and backed lightly looking back to his pile of hay as if contemplating. Before looking back AppleJack had already left the barn giving BigMac no time to say or do anything. She was ready to take care of business, and this level was brought to his attention.
She had not gone far as of yet, as rolls of rope hung over her.
“You do NOT expect me to believe that you are going back Down there, dear AppleJack?” Rarity had expected this out of AppleJack and had made her presence before she made off. AppleJack remained quiet instead paused for a moment. She knew it would be best to say nothing, as an argument with Rarity was more pointless than washing a pig before its mud bath.
“Let me tell you sweetheart, I understand you want to avenge RainbowDash and all, But it would be right pointless of an endeavor if you were to get hurt as well.” Rarity spoke trying to talk sense into AppleJack. “And for heavens sake, we all know how RainbowDash is always getting herself into some sort of incident.”
AppleJack remained quiet, her hat still pulled over her eyes hiding her expression. “NOT… On… My… Farm!!” Kicking up dirt behind her as Rarity shielded herself with her hoof, AppleJack charges back down the hill. Dissatisfied with the dirt with an obvious discussed, Rarity shakes the dirt away, and then rolling her eyes to AppleJacks decision, returns to the girls who were at the farm house together with AppleBloom and GrannySmith.
“Were you able to stop her?” Twilight asks, using her magic to wrap RainbowDash’s wing with a roll of medical wrap.
“Really, now Twilight and how would I have accomplished talking any kind of sense into that, roughian.” Rarity replied, fanning her hoof in blowing off the conversation. She knew very well AppleJack was not going to listen to any word she could have said, but was content in the thought that should couldn’t help but respect the thought of which AppleJack hoped to accomplish. Even though, it was obvious they were unsure of WHAT she went to accomplish.
The thin blades of grass would wave in the breeze, just on the hillside behind AppleJack. Standing at the tree line with her hat pulled down, lowered over her eyes, casting dark shadow under the brim. Taking a moment she would lower slightly stepping into the woodlands. Looking around and through the brush, she would decide her direction.
As a filly she would remember running through the woods here in the bottoms, but only went as far as the creek bed. Not much of the ground and creek path had changed, but over the years the vegetation had overgrown the area she mainly played. It was no longer a grass covered section of runoff but was now covered in thorny briars and gooseberry bushes. So the easiest path would be through the creek itself.
Pushing through the brush, mangled over the run-off, and then down the ridge, she would lean back carefully and slide down the rough dirt embankment. Stepping forward with wide leap of a trot she would reach the bottom of the slate and pebble covered creek bed. There was water running in small streams that bent and flowed in different directions throughout the floor. The creek itself, running south west, was lightly watered by the falls that spilled from Canterlot. But during this time of year the creek was mostly dry with little pools and streams here and there. The Orchard wrapped around the eastern part of town as it was actually bigger than most would expect, stretching from the rocky hills on the western most side of White Tail woods, to the river south of Canterlot, circling the western side of the large river bend.
Looking both up and down the creek she would have to decide which direction she was going to go, north east toward the river inlet, or south west deeper into the White tail woods? Aside from the railway that cut through the woodlands west of her, the White Tail Woods was primarily a large woodland area, scattered with creeks and hill topped meadows. It was a maze less dangerous than that of the Everfree, but its over-all size was larger. If she were to get lost the railway would be the only direct line back.
Turning north word making her way slowly up the creek, she would decide to follow the creek to the inlet as it wrapped not far from the borders of the farm and would be the best decision over all. AppleJack may be a stubborn pony… But she was not a foolish one. Following this path would be closer in proximity and completely circles around back to the farm.
AppleJack wasn’t much for holding grudges; to her it was more work than bucking apples. But leaving such a rock unturned in the collection of today’s activities doing what little they have, just added to her frustration. If she was unable to catch the culprit she would at least have walked it off.
Keeping a watchful eye, she carefully examines the area for any tracks or signs that may help lead her. All she had though was a simple idea to continue onward to a small pond over the hill top further upstream. Other than a few standing pools in the creek, the pond was the only clear water between now and the river. She would have to eventually leave the creek anyway and head east towards the river, so that would be the first direction to start off with.
As she made her way up creek she would catch a few glimpses of her past childhood, from slopping in the mud in the summer; to fishing when the creek would get higher during the spring after the snow melted. Even the old cave she dug out in the side of the embankment was still there. The entrance had caved in but she could still make it out. Other than fishing and playing, for some reason this memory seemed less enjoyable.
As she continued she would begin to remember the mischief she got herself into. It made her pause for a moment with a little grin. This was only for a moment as AppleJack did not want to get side tracked and it was already late in the day. She wanted to be back before nightfall. She was well aware that even though the wild pack of dogs that chased her as a filly were long gone. She preferred not to be here after dark.
Crossing a small stream to continue along the creek, she would catch the sight of where it looked as if somepony had tried crossing the creek and had difficulty climbing out. The tracks left behind were not pony tracks either. She was used to seeing these tracks in the past, but could never find out what made them. Granny Smith mentioned something about it but she never could put a face to it. She knew she would soon find out, as a powder blue down feather wiggles before her.
“It must ‘of fallen off as ‘eh climbed up.” AppleJacks eyes narrowed as she observed the little down feather. Then with a careful glance up she would slowly prop her front hooves against the wall of the creek and quietly lift peeking over the edge from below.
Chapter 1: Apple Tree Catastrophe
It was a fine morning in Ponyville, and as the autumn months were now here it was time to prepare for the coming winter months. It had been a busy couple of months with the harvest season just about to come to a close. Everypony was busy finishing up in preparations for the cold season. BonBon was making her way to her shop earlier than normal. It had been a busy yet very productive couple of months before nightmare nights and she needed to prepare her stock of candies for the coming winter holiday season. PeppermintTwist had been waiting by the shop not long before BonBon would arrive. She was excited that BonBon would let her practice making sugar cane candys and cinnamon sticks at the shop and wanted to make a good impression by being there early. BonBon herself was more than welcomed to have the help in preparing all the holiday candies.
Not far away you could hear tunes and harmonies playing from the music guild, they were finally getting together to start practicing for the holiday celebration. Members from all around Equestia were still arriving throughout the week as it had been decided that they should orchestrate a grand show for Princess Twilight Sparkle for her first Crowned Hearths Warming. Word of this had already leaked of the idea, so there was rumor that there may be more royal visitors. And for this being brought to Octavias attention, she had become a little anxious. No more than ¾ of the expected members have arrived for practice and even though there was still time for everypony to be ready by Christmas she wanted it to be perfect. No moment should be wasted in perfecting that synchronized rhythm of harmony with everyponys playing. But even though, at this time they were practicing their interments sending a joyful chime throughout the town.
It seemed everypony was doing their part to bring in the holiday.
As the smell of winter breezed through the air the minty pine and oak from the Smokey Mountains would blend with the sweetness of the apple trees not far from its border of Sweet Apple Acres. The pleasant aroma comforted the work of those working in the little town in the cool breeze. Taking in a nice breath, Applejack would gaze upon the orchard as the sun slowly rose over the hill side. She had recently finished off the seasons harvesting and was making her morning walk around the orchard.
AppleJack would circle around the outer edge of the orchard, bordering the woodlands just west of Sweet Apple acres. As she walked she would look to each tree remembering the hard work that had went to the harvest. She was glad for such a successful harvest and could feel a simmer of pride lift through her as she smiled. With a nod of her own humble approval she would pan her sight looking down the line of apple trees. As she peered up the hill, a light color was visible that broke the uniform of her sight. It was a lighter color than that of the bark she would expect from one her beloved apple trees. Looking closer with a leering squint she would take a few steps closer to the apple tree. Her step would become a stride as her eyes would begin to open wide to the sight.
Up and down the side of the apple tree her head tilted, there at the side was a gash in which the bark was stripped from the branches and trunk.
“Now, who, in their right mind…?” She spoke as she looked closer to the damage on the apple tree. This was not a pleasing sight for the young mare and she vowed in her mind to get to the bottom of this. She could handle a few little creatures coming in and making off with a few apples here and there. But, this… she was cross. Knowing the time of year the trees were going into a hibernating state and she knew the tree would have less ability to heal itself for the coming winter. This could very well scar the tree.
Propping herself against the apple tree tying up the last knot, AppleJack would yank firmly making sure it was properly tightened. She had returned to her barn just previously to gather some wrap to cover the tree. There was not much she could do about the branches, so they would be left bare. Big MacIntosh had noticed her fussin in the barn moments before she stomped off back into the orchard, he would eventually find his way to where she had been tending the tree. AppleJack would notice Big Mac and look her eyes to him and the tree.
“Now what do you thinks gone and tore up ‘ole Applegale?” AppleJack asks, still looking up into the branches.
And in his low slow toned voice Big Mac would lightly sway his head and reply, ”I caint say as that I know. I really do not.”
“Well, best bet is to ask Granny Smith. She’s been about these parts for some time. If anyone knew it’d be her,” AppleJack added. Then after throwing her rope over her side she would make her way back to the house to speak with the wise old mare.
“Hey Granny Smith, Granny Smith… Where are ya?” She shouted lightly in a friendly tone. Wynona came from around the corner excited to see AppleJack, she had been out by the pasture pestering the bunnies all morning. She picks her time wisely, as only a small little pooch of her size can only take so much of…THE STARE.
“Where’s Granny, Wynona?” AppleJack played. Wynona would yip and pant as she got her much desired attention, pawing and jumping happily. Then running to the corner of the house with a light bark and yip, signaling AppleJack to come hither, she would point out Ole Granny Smith cocked back on her favorite porch swing.
“Mornin Granny,” AppleJack greeted as she reached the porch.
“I was wonderin if I might have a word with ya? It seems some critter has been strippin the bark off one our apple trees. And, I’m just not too sure what it is.”
Granny Smith simply looked out to the barn yard watching the livestock and little birds that wandered about. It took AppleJack a moment to realize Granny Smith was spaced out or just didn’t know she had shown up.
With another call to Granny Smith, her eyes lit up looking around to AppleJack and everywhere else for a short moment, “Oh Hey there AppleJack.” Granny spoke with her studdery raspy voice.
“Mornin’ Granny Smith.” AppleJack greeted again after Granny Smith finally took to her presence. “Hey Granny, You’ve been workin this here farm sense before my time. And I have never seen somthin like what I seen this marnin.”
“And Wha…What is that dear?” Granny Smith asked with a slow but relaxed rock in her chair.
Replying with a little restraint, from the thought of the stripped bark, AppleJack describes the damage to the tree.
Granny Smith would look around for a moment and throw a raspy chuckle. Now, this was unexpected from Granny Smith and AppleJack didn’t know how to accept that as an answer. AppleJack was silent in thought as Granny Smith raised from her chair and began scooting along in her walker haunched over by her bad hip.
“So what do you think of it, Granny?” AppleJack asked.
“Think about what?” Granny Smith asked as she made her way to the door slowly but surely.
“About that there apple tree?” AppleJack reminded her.
“What about the apple tree?” Granny Smith had already forgotten as she scooted along back inside. This, did in fact, frustrate AppleJack even more. She was not ready to handle this at the moment, but allowed herself to catch her patients and remind her a little farther.
“Oh! The rubs.” Granny mentioned.
“The what now?” AppleJack questioned not really understanding.
“What?” Granny spoke confused. AppleJack face-hooved as she was really beginning to get annoyed.
“Granny, What are rubs? And why does the tree look like it has had a run in with a parasprite?” Finally trying to get a good answer from Granny Smith, but it seemed she was thinking about something else.
“Guess its that time a year again?” Granny thought to herself as she acted as if she did not even hear AppleJack repeat herself.
“Come on back Granny.” AppleJack announced getting her attention yet again. “What’s goin on?” Granny Smith would look with one eye at AppleJack as she made her way inside.
“The Ruts what’s going on?” Granny informed, giving AppleJack a last glance before getting inside and letting the screen door close behind her with a clap. “Just show ‘em whose boss, there AppleJack.”
AppleJack raised a brow as she stared through the screen door. Granny Smith was completely out of her barrel today, that, or she had other things on her mind. AppleJack decided, that was probably all she could get out of Granny. So making her way back out to the orchard she would again look for clues to solve this mystery.
