Chapter 1: Faint Desires
"Hello everypony, my name is Silent Song, it is a pleasure to make your acquaintance."
It was a beautiful day in Manehattan, and based on the view outside the window near where this particular mare stood, that much was obvious. The birds soared about the bright blue sky, and the clouds were full of fluff and bore a spotless white. However, despite the beauty of the day, not all was well hidden beneath the surface. Deep down inside, in the mental vaults of some, there laid dormant conflicted emotions. This particular mare was experiencing such a thing at the time being. She stood before a class full of diverse ponies, earth, pegasi, and unicorn. She herself regarded them all with a blank expression even as she'd introduced herself, and there she stood receiving their full definite reaction. Silence. All was quiet throughout the classroom.
The teacher standing beside her gave her a slight nod, "Thank you Silent Song, you may return to your seat."
Silent Song, the pony whom introduced herself, nodded to him as well. Her look was plain, boring, and obviously wasn't very appealing. Her coat was a pitch black color, as her mane was a snow white shade. Her eyes were brown, and she wore thick black rimmed glasses. She didn't possess flavor, nor any particularly attractive features despite her natural looks which were decent at best. She proceeded simply and silently towards her desk which was situated at the back of the class, and strode without sass or style, and just used her magic to pull back her seat, before lowering her rear into it. Afterwords she just placed her two front hooves atop her desk, and looked at the wooden surface absently. She now had a somewhat awkward expression, as if wondering if she did something wrong. She wore a slightly crooked frown while sitting there.
The teacher continued with a smile, raising his clipboard with the roster.
He was an earth pony with glasses, he'd adjusted them before speaking. "Alright; next, you over there."
The next pony to proceed up towards the front of the classroom was an earth pony stallion. He had a light caramel coat with sunny yellow eyes, and a bright blonde mane. He was a stud to say the least. He appeared disgruntled with the idea of heading to the front of the classroom, and as he'd made his way up there, going about the class would already be silent chuckles and giggles. But they weren't the ridiculing kind, they were a playful teasing kind. The stallion paused as he made it to the front of the class and faced them, and he looked annoyed to say the least. He just grumbled and muttered something incoherently in a whisper.
One fellow stallion cupped his mouth before stating, "Come on bro! Tell us your name!"
The stallion at the front of the class winced at that particular pony, "Shutup dude!"
But soon afterwords, a mare nudged that particular stallion, "Oh~ stop it, you know he's embarrassed!"
Soon another mare whispered to that particular mare, "Gosh~ hasn't he been shy about it since pre-school?"
They all started chuckling and giggling amongst each other in amusement.
The teacher adjusted his glasses before stating simply, "Please hurry it up, we've got other students waiting."
The stallion then stomped a hoof before exclaiming with his face flushed red, "Sunny Sideways!"
The class burst into laughter as majority of them couldn't contain their amusement, "We're just messin!"
But the world was mute for Silent Song. She still appeared to be in her own little world, as her expression didn't change and nopony cared to notice. She kept her eyes focused on her table top, as she just didn't say anything.
Not once, has anypony ever laughed or giggled with delight during my introductions.
The day just kept going on as usual, where nothing particularly interesting happened.
Silent Song now sat alone at a bench outside the school, munching on what appeared to be a small salad in a plastic container. Other students passed by her commonly, not paying any mind to her and just going about their own usual routines. Silent Song's motions were precise and almost robotic in nature, as she used her telekinetic magic to feed herself with a fork. She laid on her side on the bench, simply keeping her eyes focused on a piece of sliced apple which remained in her lunch box. Her eyes were wide, and almost paranoid in a sense as if her mind was once again drifting elsewhere, riddled with thoughts and concerns. She just continued eating her lunch slowly, not saying anything. There was nothing to say. She was alone yet again.
Not once, have I ever been invited to lunch, or conversed with a so-called *friend***.
Then once again, as every other school day of her life had been, it ended uneventfully.
Silent Song placed her books in her backpack from her locker, as she'd zipped it up afterwords. The hallways were pretty empty during this time, seeing as school had already been out for a couple of minutes. The lighting from outside which'd found a way to leak into the main halls of the building, gave off an orange luminescent glow to it. It was beautiful yet lonesome in some ways, and Silent Song could feel such an affect taking place. All she could hear going on around her was idle chatter as she prepared to make her way home, idle chatter which of course didn't involve her in any way.
As she'd trotted down the hall, she'd eventually made her way past a pair of two ponies, a unicorn mare and a pegasus stallion. She pretended not to acknowledge their existence but she knew full well they were there of course. She also knew what they were discussing. The stallion was confessing to the mare, asking for her hoof in a more public and intimate high-school relationship. He'd also prepared her a gift. This of course had nothing to do with Silent Song however, it was none of her business nor was it ever any of her concern. Still she expressed no emotion in regards to these circumstances.
Not once, have I ever been confessed to, let alone touched a stallion affectionately.
As Silent Song sat waiting at the train station a little ways outside the school, she found herself distracted by the setting sun. Had it really been that late into the afternoon already? She gazed up towards the orange lit sky with a blank stare for awhile. It appeared so vast and empty to her at the time being. How come when she looked at it; it reminded her of her own isolated little world? She soon heard more mares chuckling and giggling, she glanced across the tracks momentarily out of curiosity. Across the tracks at the opposite platform, a large group of ponies were laughing merrily, conversing with one another. Actually, now that she actually took the time to notice, she noticed they were actually the students from her class.
Silent Song spent some time just staring at them for awhile, blankly with half closed eyes. There was a bitter feeling that overcame her in that moment, a feeling of anger. A feeling of bitterness in regards to all those mares. Yes, of course she chose to live this sort of lifestyle. She enjoyed it. She enjoyed being alone without the unnecessary distractions of the social life. All those lame things ever brought was tedious drama and bad memories. She was better off doing her own thing, living in her own world, and going day by day doing what she did best, being silent, and getting by. At this point Silent Song actually expressed something, she put on a pleased smile. A soft smile as she convinced herself of these things while looking upon those mares.
Yes, that was the absolute truth of it all, she was certain of it. Absolutely certain.
"Erhm; why's she crying?"
Silent's eyes immediately snapped wide as she felt stunned by those words, frozen in place.
There were two mares not far off from her at the train stop, whispering to one another, as her friend mentioned. "Shhhh~ be quiet, she'll hear you stupid! It's not like she's only a few feet away or anything, end sarcasm!" Before knocking her friend up the head. "But it is sort of creepy, she was smiling to..."
H-Huh? Silent then raised a hoof to her face, before rubbing her eyes. And there, in that moment, she felt moisture. She looked down at that hoof with a petrified expression. How long have I-.....
The mares however continued in their attempt at private ridicule.
One of the mares commented, "Haha, what's with her? Now she looks all confused!"
The opposing one couldn't contain her snickers, "What is this a soap-opera or something with her hoof!?"
They both burst into wild laughter at that point.
Silent Song's cheeks flushed red as she looked at them. She then immediately turned away from them, trotting away hurriedly in the opposite direction, stumbling a bit as she made her way down the steps.
The mares then tried to contain their laughter as one reached out to the retreating pony. "W-Wait! Hahahaha...Please!" She shook her head, before nearly falling to her sides, "W-We didn't mean it we swear!"
The other one continued as she'd attempted to cup her muzzle, "We're soooorry! Hahahahaha!"
In a particular suburban home, there was a mare before the stove preparing dinner. She to was a unicorn, and she bore a white coat with a brown mane with light streaks of grey. She also had brown eyes. She wore a bored expression as she just glanced up at a clock over the stove as she stirred a pot of steamed carrots. She raised a brow before glancing back at two other ponies in the living room whom were watching the TV and seemingly distracted. "Hey you two, isn't it a little late, shouldn't Silent be back by now?"
One of the ponies who was an older stallion with a black coat and yellow and white mane just rolled his eyes before continuing to watch TV. "She's probably just running a little late honey, don't worry about it."
The mare then stopped stirring the pot as she made her way over to them in the living room. "Which is exactly why I'm confused." She then looked at the second pony, who was just lounging on the couch.
He didn't pay any mind to her, and just kept his eyes glued to the television set.
The mare groaned, before wincing at him, "Terrain, do you have any idea why your sister is late?"
The other stallion who was obviously much younger just glanced back with a shrug, "I don't know mom. You know I don't keep track of her, she's a loner, ain't my fault if she gets lost or something."
The mare scowled heavily before stomping a hoof and returning to the kitchen, "Gah! You two just-...Ugh!!"
The two stallions just looked at one another before shrugging and continuing to watch the TV.
Later that night, Silent found herself just sluggishly making her way down the bustling city streets of Manehattan. Her mane was now tattered and erratic, as she looked far worse for wear. Deep bags underlined her eyes as she appeared as if she'd just escaped a psychiatric ward, or at the very least, needed one.
Has my life.....always been this pathetic?
But in that moment, the mare bumped into somepony abruptly, getting knocked down to the sidewalk. She remained there for some time, before muttering silently and almost lifelessly, "Sorry...."
However, the voice which replied was surprising for Silent, it was a mare's voice, and a beautiful one. "Well well well, aren't you just a pitiful little thing? It hurts just looking at you." The mare was revealed to be quite tall and extravagant, as her mane was a shade of dark green and her coat was a pitch black color. She was a unicorn, and one of superb elegance and beauty. She was leagues above the shriveled up mare who laid before her like a husk. The unicorn lowered her frame somewhat, before tilting Silent's head up to get a good look at her in the eyes, and Silent didn't react. "Yes.....Yes, I think you will do quite nicely." She then helped the younger unicorn to her hooves, ensuring she stayed close to her. "You'll do just fine."
Silent didn't bother to look her helper in the eyes, before just muttering. "Who're you?.."
The mare blinked a bit before simply smiling and closing her eyes. "A friend."
Silent's eyes widened then, as she just leaned her head closer against this mare, "Thank you." A friend.....
The mare wore a pleased expression with amused half closed eyes. Hah; already I can taste it, *how delicious***.
