"My name is Moon Watcher. I’m a Unicorn Stallion who used to work at The Canterlot Royal Observatory as Assistant Astronomer. I used to love staring up at the moon, observing its valleys, its mountains, its craters, and the mare on the moon. I’d sit up every night, sing to the moon, paint under the moonlight… and Most of all... I’d imagine that the moon herself would be a graceful mare… the mare in the moon herself made pony… I was smitten with the moon, with the night and its stars.
It was the eve of the summer sun celebration 2 years ago. It was the event that brought my dreams to reality… and the very same event that shattered them. Nightmare Moon, The Mythical Mare in the Moon and sister of Princess Celestia had gotten free. I don’t know how it happened… or what happened. Day never came, Princess Celestia didn’t appear in Ponyville, and I was kidnapped. It turns out, that all those nights I spent looking up to the night sky, loving the moon, singing to it, daydreaming about it, and romanticizing the nights beauty, did not go unheard. I was surrounded by a dark mist, and before I knew it my world had blacked out. When I awoke I seemed to be in the catacombs, or dungeon of some old castle. By the looks of the ivy and assorted flora growing along the wall, and the rust on the bars I was pretty certain the place had been abandoned for years. The mist returned, I was afraid, I closed my eyes and shielding myself and then… the most beautiful, soft, yet… cold voice I had ever heard spoke to me ‘un-shield your eyes mortal' she said. It’s like I had no control over my actions. My hooves lowered, I turned to her and opened my eyes... It brings tears to my eyes even know. Remembering that ebony Goddess, black like the night, so dark light seemed to be sucked into her presence. Her eyes glowing, twinkling bright, like twin stars. And her mane! It was as I looked into fabric made from the night itself, the stars twinkling, the nebula flowing silently. My wonder was so much I never noticed the dark goddess approach me till she touched my nose with her slippered hoof.
'You are the one who has appreciated and loved my night since you where a foal' I could only nod. 'All these years I’ve watched over you. I’ve also heard the songs, the poems, and your dreams and fantasies' she grinned at me and all I could do was stare down at the cold stone floor, it did nothing to hide my embarrassment. 'I have returned now. And I shall be Queen of the land. But every queen needs her king.' I...she began removing her armor, her helmet, her chest piece, her slippers. She lied with me… I don’t know for how long. I was exhausted, I felt beaten, abused, you could say raped… Yet I felt it was the best moment in my life. I loved every second of it, her touch… her smell, her voice… She left mentioning she would be back for me… 'I must deal with those pesky pawns of my sister. Once they are disposed of I shall come right back to you my king… My love…' she trotted out of my cell, passing right through the rusted metal bars, as if she were a ghost. And that’s the last I saw of her.
I waited, and waited. The Sun came up. But I suspected nothing. I waited 3 days before I used what strength I had along with some magic to bust the rusted door down. I wandered the castle for hours till I found her… or what remained of her. Only shards of her armor… nothing else, nothing more. I feared the worst, but instead of giving into desperation, I decided to venture out of the castle to the surrounding areas, seeking not only food and water, and perhaps a way home, but also in hopes that I would find her. I never did. I hid the fragments in a pile of rubble. Not so much as a...grave. But more as a way of safeguarding what little I had left of her from potential looters. I traveled, through swamps, forests, and mountains... I eventually made it to civilization again. A small town called Ponyville, I collapsed near the entrance of the town. I woke up in its clinic. I really cannot complain. I was treated well. Better than I had ever been treated in my life… I… I was thrown a party by a hyper active earth pony that resided in the town. Another earth pony that ran an apple farm insisted that eat freely from her harvest till I had fought off my severe malnourishment. When I mentioned I was from Canterlot, a Purple unicorn mare approached me offering to help me get back to Canterlot.
I was grateful of my time there. And my love and hopes of finding my night goddess where revived. Not long after having taken up the purple mare's offer up. Who I later found out to be named Twilight Sparkle, I learned of rumours of a new princess in Canterlot. I was anxious! I felt in love! I was alive again! It had to be her! I cheerily strode back home, around my neighborhood, back to work, saying hello to everypony. Telling them how I had gotten a letter from family who had gotten sick and I went to visit. I wasn’t fired from my job. My boss was actually happy to see me again. She was just worried and put me right back into it. I did some investigating and I found out a few things. The new princess never came out in public. Only once being seen in Ponyville with princess Celestia, her sister. I questioned this. Hadn’t my Goddess said she'd deal with Princess Celestia’s "pawns"? It seemed there was… bad blood between the siblings. Perhaps they had settled their differences, and she was caught up with things and forgotten me? Her armor broken in a scuffle, but she was ok.
I continued my duties. Studying the night, which had recently changed. Completely so. Nights where not as dark… only parts of the night sky were black. It was now mostly very dark purples and blues. The stars were in new groupings, new colours, Even new constellations and nebula where visible. It was as if I stared into an alien sky each night, and most importantly, the Moon had changed. Gone, were the jagged patterns of craters that formed the mare in the moon phenomena on its surface. The moon was now a bright pearl that illuminated the night enough that lanterns and the like where barely needed for one to see in the dark. I originally mistook this as a good sign. My Queen was happy. So her work demonstrated it. It was one year later. One year of paying various ponies for information, myself investigating on my own end, that I was able to find out where my princess was to make a public appearance, Back in Ponyville. I quit my job. It was a sad affair, but I explained to them that my family needed me, and that I would most likely return as things got better for them. A clever lie, it worked. I sold my house, and everything I had except for some essentials and my telescope. I moved to Ponyville and I had filled out the forms and paid my fees. By the end of the week I was living in my own little humble abode. Over the course of the next year I would follow a familiar trail back to the ruined old castle where I met my love. The constant trips back and forth had strengthened my body as it also did my heart. I knew she would make an appearance here. She needed somepony truly worthy of her. I wanted to feel worthy of her. I wanted to show her how I had remained loyal to her all this time. Then the night came… Nightmare Night. The Night fillies dress up as creatures that go bump in the night, or other fairy tales. Go around asking for candy... I met her.
She was trying to... change her public appearance... Everypony believed Princess Luna as she called herself to still be Nightmare Moon… My Princess… they were wrong. She saw me and approached me, even followed me back to my home. I had moved the scraps of my queen’s armor there, where I had done my best to repair. She was shocked and abhorred at the sight of the armor. This wasn’t my queen. This wasn’t her at all. We talked. It’s when reality settled in. My queen had been… murdered by her very own sister, murdered by her servants, replaced with this… pale imitation… a puppet. I spat at her, Yelled at her to get out of my sight. I trashed my home, Cried for days. All I wanted was to die. I stopped eating, stopped caring. I took my queens armor, and some supplies. I intended to live my last days back where I met her. My solitude didn’t last. She was there again, now with the servants of her sister. I accused them all of being murderers. I tried fighting. I was subdued by the false princess. I was brought to Canterlot again where I was interrogated by Celestia's royal guard, and by other officials, yourself included. In my "room" I was visited my princess Luna again. She apologized for the actions of her other self. I didn’t respond. I continued to stare at the wall.
I eventually had the honor of speaking with Celestia in person. I demanded. I pleaded. I cried. I only wanted my queen back. She argued that she would have cost the lives of everypony in Equestria. That she was a cold being who only knew hatred and malice. Who only sought to bring death and destruction to all. How could this be? The short moment I was with her. I was shown more love and warmth than I’d ever experienced in my entire life! The way she spoke about forging a new era… that didn’t speak of destruction! It spoke of creation! A new "tomorrow"! I pleaded that if I could at least have her back, for a single moment more. Just an instance. Even if she was stripped of all power and ability… just so I could tell her I loved her… I had formulated plans. Plans of revenge. Very extensive plots to bring the downfall of this solar tyrant and her puppet of a sister, that false night goddess. And those filthy little mares that helped to murder my queen would face my wrath as well! But…, Celestia… granted me my wish! I saw her again. She came to me in all her dark glory. She kissed me. I told her my feelings and I couldn’t believe it! She felt the same back! She told me she just wanted to be with me and we moved back to my house in Ponyville and we’ve been living there since! She’s expecting a foal you see. I hope it’s a little filly, a beautiful black coat just as her mother.
"I think that’s enough for today Mr. Moon Watcher" the psychiatrist pony looked somberly over to the white unicorn stallion in a straight jacket. His horn had been removed as standard practice with all mentally ill unicorns placed in this institution. He continued on to ramble and rant about his fantasy world. He lamented that this patient. Like many others had little to no hope of ever recuperating and leading a normal life. He signaled to large earth pony stallions in white coats to escort Moon Watcher back to his room.
