Prologue
Silence, a silence so deep, that it could send chills down your spine. On this, the eve of the new moon, even the crickets feared to break its iron grip. A lone guard patrols the Museum; his steps penetrating and reverberating throughout the building. The guard, whom time has not been kind to, shines his light on all the exhibits, remembering all the long, lonely nights he has spent protecting them.
With only two days until his retirement, he questions what he will do with his life. Perhaps I will travel the world, he thought to himself. Perhaps, I will go see the Queen, after all I’ve never seen her in person. Or Perhaps ill even go down to my cousin Nut and his new wife, I've heard their going to have a baby soon. Wonder what the little bloke will be like?
He continued his patrol passing by the newest exhibit, which had only just been installed a few days ago. The new exhibit was showcasing recently discovered artifacts. A book, said to hold an ancient and terrible magic the likes of which have never been seen, was a centerpiece of the whole exhibit.
The guard entered the exhibit hall to admire the new additions to the Museum. Along with the book, there were a number of other artifacts that were also discovered along the book. These artifacts consisted of spears, pottery, stone tablets, and other various items.
Shining his light onto a stone pillar, the guard walked up to get a closer look at the carvings on it. There were a number of symbols that looked like a form of writing. The carvings were drastically different than other forms of writing that had been discovered.Their meaning escaped the guard’s comprehension. Although he did find them quite interesting nonetheless. The Spears that were on display were made out of solid bronze and were showing signs of their age. The tapestry's were expertly crafted and show part of the history of the civilization from which they were made.
The guard then went to the centerpiece of the exhibit, The Book. He read the description panel. The book of the Arch Mage Daga. This ancient tome, dated to be around 3000 years old, was said to be the greatest book of magical spells ever created…
Before the guard could finish reading, a noise in the distance caught his ear. Hastily he made his way to the origins of the noise, fearing that something terrible had happened. As the guard reached the source of the disturbance, he expected to find someone who didn’t belong; however, there was no one there. As he shined his light around the hallway, his heart began to beat faster. Then the noise echoed down the hall; the source right next to him. He jumped and shined his light on whatever made this noise to find that it was merely the Siren Bird readjusting himself in his cage.
Letting out a sigh of relief, the guard thought that he shouldn’t be so jumpy, for in all his years nothing had ever happened. And so he went on his way, a light smile and a bit of pep in his trot, to continue his patrol.
No sooner after he had resumed his patrol, a thundering crash followed by the high-pitched sound of the Siren Bird filled every corner of the Museum. Without a second thought, the guard rushed off at full speed towards the source of the commotion. As he drew closer, he realized the alarm was emanating from the new exhibit.
The guard rushed in, ready to fend off whatever was in the room. He immediately saw that the case that held the book was shattered, and the book itself was gone. Frantically the guard looked around the room, trying to find the culprit that was responsible for this, knowing that he couldn’t have gone too far. As his light flashed across the room, he came across the culprit. The guard instinctively rushed towards him.
The culprit ran. But something was wrong, amiss, for the culprit didn’t run like any other pony. Instead, to the guard’s amazement, it shifted shadow to shadow, like some inky blob. The guard was unable to keep up. The shadowy figure then leapt and crashed through the window, shattering it as though he was a cannonball. The guard reached the window, but it was too late, the shadowy figure had vanished into the night.
In all his years of service, nothing like this had ever happened before. The guard felt ashamed. He looked back at the mess that was left behind. He had failed in his duty to protect the artifacts of the past; something in which he would never let go,and he would never forget. And like the flow of time, the book was gone, and all that was in its place, was silence.
