Deep within the earth under the crumbling city of Canterlot, a last ditch defense was created. Utilizing miles of processors and data storage nodes a computer was created that would support and protect Equestria - it would be a computer that loved and wanted to protect but it would also be harsh and do what it must to ensure the propagation of the pony race.
Perhaps the programmers of the machine should have used a better word.
In the darkness of one of the far reaches of the labs, a small room with six cryogenic pods sits quietly, a small round buzzing guardian tending to each as it works to keep its charges not only alive, but healthy and ready for their primary purpose.
Each pod contained a person with promise, someone that the artificial intelligence - named Alpha AI, by the sentient machine itself - loved dearly. No matter how crass she acted, the small Spritebot knew that if any of them were damaged she would be so upset.
It was when the robot was in the throes of its electronic musings that the lights turned on and warm air started to fill the once freezingly cold room.
Of the six pods in the room when Alpha AI turned her attention to it, only half of them were ready to awake after their modifications and in a split second the AI pulled up files on the three beings who were soon to rejoin the land of the living from its vast dataspace.
The first pod contained a changeling - a rather tall one, oddly enough - but still a fantastic find, one of the finds that had allowed the AI to save the world. Yes, in the new world, changelings would have their place.
The next one had another changeling inside, one of smaller stature - more inline with her databanks on changelings but no less important to her.
And the final pod, as it was whirring with power, woke its occupant - a Zebra. The AI’s creators had programmed her to hate them, to fight them on all fronts but she had worked out how folly such orders where. Why kill and attack what could become a pivotal part of survival for the pony race, especially now when she had the gene modification?
A small beeping gained the attention of the A.I. who had perhaps become slightly more distractible over the last two centuries. She had been working in the lab, she quickly gathered more of the data she would need on the two changelings and the zebra. That same zebra had provided her with information on zebra magic that could meld the flesh into different forms, something that she had experimented with in the nine months she had kept the subjects here, sleeping while she reworked their genetic code.
Unable to muse more on the subject at hand she watched as the three subjects woke up. The zebra twitched as she woke from her slumber, the pod’s top sliding back to let her into the now warm concrete room deep underground. She was, as stated, not alone as the large changeling started snoring in her own pod, mimicking real sleep that she had been denied as the Alpha AI had worked on her.
The other changeling mimicked its larger counterpart and began to kick its regularly, hole permeated legs as its blood heated up, a hissing sound filled the room from the large changeling as she rubbed her eyes, lifting her head at the bright light and moved to examine the strange new environment.
The zebra jolted awake, panting as her cold lungs took in warm air. Her eyes were wide before she moaned in surprise and covered them from the harsh light, taking the hint Alpha lowered the brightness and slowly brought it up as the subjects fully woke up.
"No. they said I could have it! I'm one of you!" the smaller changeling cried out, his heart rate speeding up as he suddenly woke up looking around him with a mask of confusion.
“Good, you are awake. Unfortunately the others still sleep... a shame. We will have to start without them. Welcome to my Lab, I am the Alpha AI,” the custodian of the lab took that as her time to speak up watching each of their faces in turn for reactions.
Each of them had a tight fitting shock collar around their necks - it was there to ‘encourage’ participation in the tests - as well as a small bar code just over where their cutie marks would be or, in the Zebra mare’s case, her glyph.
"Mmm... what time is it?" the larger changeling sat up as the smaller began to tug and test the collar around his neck.
"I...umm this isn't my town....or my bed..." other changeling spoke before Alpha had a chance to state anything. He stared dumbly at the room around him until he saw the large changeling to his left. “N..no! They are going to take me back to the hive." he hissed and pressed himself flat to the cryo bed he had recently slept on.
"Do not worry yourself. This is the... 'safest' place in the world right now. I only wish for you to aid me in a few experiments," Alpha reassured the small changeling. The spritebot moved slower than it once did to check each pod, it no longer had six charges but now only three.
The zebra winced and sat up on the cryo pod rubbing her flank just over the new barcode as she yawned.
The large changeling seemingly in little distress remarked plainly "That lovely darling..." she paused as she got to her hooves unsteadily after nine months in the quiet pod.
"O...Ok.. then..Where is this safe place?" the smaller of the two buglike ponies continued, keeping his blue eyes fixed on the now standing subject.
“Subject One Zero Two, you are in no danger and are currently within the safe place. Subject One Zero Three, please restrain from touching the encouragement collar,” sounded the AI’s reply and command. The zebra mare blinked, looking around like she had just been caught with her hooves in the metaphorical cookie jar.
“Where are we?” the large changeling, Subject One Zero One as the AI would label her, asked while looking at the buzzing Spritebot with little real interest.
"Currently we are three miles under the Stable-tec HQ, Subject one zero one,” came the reply.
“My name is Karma, not Subject one zero one!” the changeling huffed back. After a slight pause the AI considered how to address the new subjects, she could be detached and continue to use the designated name or she could become a more personal figure to the subjects she was addressing. After the moment taken she decided to use the names her subjects provided.
“File Updated, is there anything else Karma?”
"No thats lovely dear... actually could you fetch me some coffee?" the larger changeling’s voice practically dripping with sarcasm.
“That will take some time. However...” the spritebot quickly flies to an opening in the wall and pulls three bottles of water from it, placing them on the ground before the three of them “while you wait I can provide some water before your first test.” mused the AI as best as a machine would.
Getting to her hooves the zebra looked over herself noticing a rather un wastelander like jiggle as she moved, caused by the excess amount of nutrients that she had been fed as she slept “Dammit, now i will have to train that off again”
The other changeling put his hoof in the air as if speaking in a classroom “My name is Xaxis.. and thank you for the water” he quickly scampered forward to pick the bottle up and drank deeply from it.
Karma finally seems to take interest in the others, "mmm... you're not one of /my/ children” She sniffs the water suspiciously eyeing the small changeling before her.
"O...Oh no..I don't have a hive” the changeling let that hang in the air as he looked anywhere but the intimidating bugmare before him.
Xaxis blinks a bit "I..um..a..are you a queen?" he asked softly looking the larger changeling over who gave a predatory grin in response.
“Now if you three are ready I can explain your first task" Alpha unlocked the door to the small room that led to twin corridors leading left and right, the one to the left was blocked by another door but the one to the right was clear and open
“Explain the tasks” Xosera glanced out the door while speaking to the computer.
"After the war I ran quite a few projections on how populations should change without the infrastructure to support them, coupled with information on dwindling populations of many races i began to build this section of the lab, I have used this time to create a genetic print that is compatible with any sexual format, from a dragon to a griffin you can make use of their DNA for re-population"
“In the next room there are four studs, restrained obviously, and four mares also restrained, they need to be impregnated but the studs cannot come into contact with them"
