Chapter 1
Vinyl had woken up to a very excited Octavia jumping up and down on top of her. At first, she had been very annoyed at being pulled out of her dreams in such a sudden and foolish manner. But then again, who needs dreams when the pony you were dreaming about is jumping on top of you?
“What’s got you excited?” asked Vinyl in between gasps of air.
“Today’s your first gig in this town! You’ve got to get everything ready!”
Vinyl groaned. It hadn’t been 3 days since she’d moved from Manehattan to Ponyville with Octavia, and she had already been requested to five different places to perform here. It’s not like she didn’t like it, in the contrary, she loves doing her job, even more when she plays along with her marefriend on some of the gigs. Tonight, however, was not one of those gigs, and she was not nearly as excited to get out of bed as Octavia was.
“Where’s it at?” Asked Vinyl, gently pushing Octavia off her.
Octavia looked at a calendar they’d written all the gig dates and sites, then spoke.
“It starts at 8:00 p.m. in a place called… Sugarcube Corner.”
Vinyl and Octavia’s eyes widened after realizing that they both knew this name. Hell, all of Equestria knew that name. It had been all over the news when the bearers of The Elements of Harmony had been interviewed. One of the ponies, a pink one in particular, had been asked for a living. She’d said that she worked in a confectionary, but also karaoke-bar at night, throwing parties for both, little fillies and colts, and mares and stallions. It suddenly seemed obvious to Octavia who had been the pony to have requested the DJ for tonight.
“Pinkie Pie,” Octavia said quietly.
“That’s awesome! That means I get to see Pinkie tonight!”
Vinyl smiled at the thought of finally being able to party with the pony whose talent itself was to throw awesome parties again. Octavia, of course, didn’t share the enthusiasm of her marefriend. Pinkie Pie had been after all, the pony who had ruined her career as a classical player with her “Pony Pokey” at the Grand Galloping Gala five years ago. But then again… had it not been for Pinkie, she wouldn’t have met Vinyl.
Octavia would get hired by no one after the “Pony Pokey” happened, and having no income and no job, she had lost her house. In an attempt to trying to help her, Pinkie had asked a lot of her close friends if they’d had a place for Octavia to crash at while she could get back on her hooves. Vinyl Scratch had been the only one to take in Octavia, at first offering to let her live with her in her small apartment in Manehattan. She had taken the offer as soon as it had been made, and moved in with the DJ.
At first, Octavia would always complain about the noise Vinyl would always be making when making new songs and a lot of arguments had come from that. But, as time went by, Octavia had grown to enjoy that particular kind of music, and got inspired to help Vinyl however she could. Having no job herself, this was the least she could do for Vinyl for such hospitality. Vinyl had tried to teach her to make electronic music on her mixing table, but soon saw it was a lost case.
That same night, Octavia had decided to practice with (one of the few things she’d kept after she’d lost her house) her cello. The DJ had heard her, and became completely inspired, and had decided to mix the two kinds of music: Dubstep and Classical.
She’d practiced with Octavia for a while, and after only a few days, they were unstoppable. The pair knew when to jump in for their turn, when to give each other a perfect beat, even when improvising.
They had performed in one of Vinyl’s gigs after only a week of having started with this, but it was enough. The music, it was perfect. They were perfect together, anypony could see that.
Ponies all over Equestria had gone crazy after the first gig. It was a new kind of music, a kind of music that they had created. After a year of playing together, they saw that not only had they fallen in love with the music, but also with each other. They became a couple, making all of their fans go completely insane with “aww’s” and “yay’s!”
Not only did they finally gain everypony’s hearts, they also finally got enough bits to move from Vinyl’s crappy apartment to this huge, amazing house in Ponyville.
Octavia smiled at the memories, but decided to come back to the actual world from her thoughts. “So,” she said, “Element of Laughter’s party tonight, huh?”
“Yes! Even more reason to go! The lulz!”
The couple burst out into laughter, Vinyl falling back on the bed, trying to catch her breath. Octavia took this opportunity to climb up on her, giving her a short kiss before saying, “Don’t forget to thank her for introducing me to you. I never really got to tell her myself.”
Vinyl smiled even wider now. “Well, why don’t you just come and tell her yourself? If I just tell her you’re with me, she’ll let you in for free, and you’ll hang out with her while I’m performing!”
Octavia smiled, but shook her head. “Vinyl, you know the only reason to ever actually ‘hit the clubs’ is to perform with you. Besides, I don’t know what else to talk about with Pinkie, other than thanking her and the usual stuff. She’ll think I’m boring as hay!”
Vinyl hugged her and smirked. “Pfft, Pinkie makes everything fun. You won’t even get a chance to be awkward, she’ll somehow make this night awesome for everypony! Don’t worry, babe. So, will you come?”
Vinyl made her best puppy impression to convince Octavia, which always worked on Octavia.
“Fine,” Octavia said after a moment of staring at the puppy face. “But I’m not drinking anything, alright?”
Vinyl smiled. She knew how Octavia got when she was drunk… and she would see Drunktavia party with pinkie tonight, even if it was the last thing she had to do.
