Bite Down, Don't let Go
The great and powerful....Oberus?
Previous ChapterNext ChapterChapter Seven: The Great and Powerful....Oberus? Vs
Two days. Two days passed since Oberus's "welcome to Ponyville Party". Two days spent reading. Two days reorganizing books with Spike the dwarf Dragon so Twilight wouldn't say anything about him not going out. He'd simple say-
"I'm hanging out with spike, ya know a friend." That pretty much ends all complaints. Spike had eaten all of the gems he had in his cart wreck of a backpack. Oberus really didn't mind, he had no other use for them. Though now he needed bits, bits equalled a job, a job meant actual interaction with ponies. He wasn't going to have that. Not that they weren't good...uh...ponies. Their just not his level.
Hyenas are actually how others described them; mean, cruel, all around jerks. Not only to others, but each other and themselves. They thrived on the self imposed chaos wrought by there own actions. Broken limb? Laugh. Theft? Laugh. Kidnapping? Laugh, search, find celebrate, still missing, no one gives two shits. Rape? Laugh and join in. Murder? Laugh, eat the remains.
Oberus was desensitized to everything that went on around him, due to how he dreams. When young Hyenas have dreams of their desires they respond accordingly. These dreams were like a ponies cutie mark. The day they got them there stuck in place. The dreams start fuzzy, then as days go by the closer the goal or talent the clearer the dream, simple right? Wrong. Utterly dead wrong. Dreams have to be interpreted, there never straight forward. Males are usually quite simple.
There; whom they serve, how many kids, who killed who, were there banished to. Now hold up, all males are banished there never kept to close to the main kingdom. There are at least five villages each with a female who has dominated all males or has a male dominate another proving that their so low they don't get the honor of being dominated by a female. Oberus was exiled meaning he's not allowed in ANY Hyeanidom.
Now females, females were complicated their dreams screamed when, where, what, up, down, left, right, zigzag, zagzig, left bumper, right trigger, start, D-pad, chicken, and some how they always get it. Female intuition or some bull like that. Oberus himself has never had a dream only nightmares. He's never had a clear one before, but he's known they were nightmares a long time. That's the only explanation for why he wakes up in pain in the morning. Unless there dreams about really painful intercourse, that he didn't mind.
"You think I have a chance with her?" Ah shit train of thought ran the tracks.Boom.
"What!?!?" Oberus tried to remember what spike had been trying to mention to him.
"Rarity. Do you think I have a chance with her?" Spike came by broom in hand. Oberus looked back to the book he was reading"Wildlife and Vegetation for Foals" a side interest, he'd been in the Everfree for months yet never came up against anything more than Manticores and Timber wolves, a Cockatrice once after watching it turn a Robin to stone. Then after he adopted the kill/run first, question later rule.
"Consider making yourself a smidge taller, deliver hundreds of gems to her everyday, gain some sophistication then I'm positive she'd consider it." He paused to gauge Spike's react, the Dragon's emerald eyes were staring so hard, so full of hope he might spontaneously combust. "But as you are? No,no definitely not" Oberus closed the book, standing on his hind legs to reach its spot back on the shelf.
"You've said that before" Spike said.
"Said what?"
"That no no thing, when you first got here and I walked in...what were you talking about?" Spike was actually pointing accusingly at him.
"I...uh-"
"You can see the future can't you" he's eyes glittered.
"What?! No! I just-"
"Hi Spike, Hi Oberus how are you both doing this morning?" Saved by Sparkle.
"Good"
"Like a Moon was dropped on my skull slowly allowing two separate gravitational pulls to rip me apart, no biggie." Twilight looked at him quizzically. He always answered strangely that way, the day before there was something about hooks, a rubber ball and a cat of nine tails.
"Could you both follow me please." Trotting up the stairs Twilight stopped at the fifth check to see if assistant and house guest were following. Spike most eagerly, Obe less so. Once in the room Twilight levitated Spike paper and quill. She told Her violent house guest to stand across from her.
"Alright stand still and don't move." Her horn became a glow. Oberus glowered.
"I didn't agree-"
POOF
When the smoke cleared a mustached Hyena sat there. It was black and thin, one side stuck straight out, the other curled into its self.
"Wow Twilight" Spike praised. "This makes a total of -" Oberus tuned out the conversation in favor of trying to see down his snout. No easy task. He didn't like having things added he had a say in. The stupid armband(bracelet) was enough. This did however, afford him a new opportunity. Focusing on the foreign magic, he focused on the block that separated the mustache from his body. Siphoning off its supply, he watched both wisps snap off hitting the wood with dull thumps.
"How'd you do that?" Twilight questioned. Spike had run over, picked up both half's, stuck the curled one to his face, curled the other stuck that one to his face then proceeded to rub his claws together cackling lowly.
"I don't like magic forced on me." Oberus stated.
"But how did you cancel the spell!?" He might of imagined it but he thought a single strand from her mane just popped out of place.
"I simple made it stop." He was not enjoying the Q & A.
"But-"
"Look I simple made it stop ok?" He could feel his eye twitching now. "I've never bothered fingering it out." Making his way downstairs, Oberus suddenly found his path impeded by a lavender unicorn with a large grin and a sparkle(ha) in her wide eyes.
"That's AMAZING! The ability to cancel inflicted spells by will is ASTOUNDING! Do you have to focus really intently in order to subdue another's spell to your control or can you just shrug it off with a whim, there are so many test to perform starting with what can't you-" A bracelet free paw met her muzzle.
"Twilight Sparkle."
"Mmm?"
"Shut....up." Letting go Oberus brushed past quickly making his way to the lobby.
"Where are you going?" She yelled down to him. He could hear her hooves clopping on the wood to catch up.
"I'm looking for a job." Now he was just rushing, positive now that his paw had slip from the handle Several times,Why is this happening? He thought panicking.
"Applejack has a job for you." Oberus stopped dead. Turning, he eyed her cautiously.
"A job?"
"Yeah she was afraid you weren't getting out enough so she told me there was some work for you to do." He eyed her doubtfully.
"Doing what bucking apples?" He laughed.
"Yes." Oberus actually gagged.
" I don't know if you've noticed but-" he turned so full view of his body could be seen. " my hind legs aren't that long and don't straighten out enough for me to buck." lifting in demonstration, the robust hyena showed just how long his leg was. "I'd be no good at."
"Applejack told me you have the ability to shape shift your limbs so you could-"
"Ok I get I'm gone." Oberus made sure to grab his ratty backpack and slam the door on his way out, causing several books to fall out of place. Twilight wasn't sure that they could handle this any more. When Princess Celestia had given them this assignment, she'd thought Oberus would be more willing. But it seemed like he was making everything they did for him useless. He's like her before Ponyville, except he wants to stay friendless. What could they possible do to get through to him?
"Hey Twilight." Called spike. Reaching the bottom of the stairs, mustache still attached to his face he looked somewhat breathless from rushing down." There's a whole bunch of ponies heading to the center of Ponyville."
"Ok Spike let's check it out." Maybe this would be easier to deal with.
Oberus POV
He wasn't really sure where he was going. He knew Sweet Apple Acres was some where to the edge of Ponyville, but which way? He wasn't really raring to ask direction. Though it seemed like he wouldn't be able to. All businesses and homes appeared deserted, like they all up and left. Not very good if someone decided they wanted anything free. Like bits? Reaching a daffodil cart, Oberus began to exam it trying to find a bucket or something. Coming up empty he went over to a vegetable stand. At the side was a tin can full of at least ten bits. Today was starting to look up.
Digging in the can a rather familiar sound punctured the melody of jingling bits. Hoof steps.
"Hey guy?" Turning around, about make a run for it Oberus suddenly found something cupped to his ears. "Listen to this a sec?" Taking a moment to study the mare, he found he'd seen her before. Marshmallow coat, neon blue mane and tail with light blue highlights. She wore a pair of reflective sunglasses, not an once of eye seen. And not to be forgotten a horn. Great another unicorn. From how she was positioned he had no clear view of her cutie mark.
wub...wub...wub. headphones? Bass? Odd this sounded oddly-
WUB- WUB- WUB- WUB-
"Aaaaahhh MY EARS!!!" Rearing up, he tossed up the earmuff headphones, falling to his back clutching his ears. The unknown unicorn levitated the muffs around to her neck, music still blaring.
"Ah another satisfied listener of Vinyl Scratch." commented the mare.
"What? I can't hear you, my ears Are BLEEDING!" He wailed. The self named Vinyl Scratch chuckled.
"Naa, that's just the Bass pounding in your Head." Either this happened a lot or his reaction was really amusing.
"Why does the bass hurt so much?" Oberus wasn't liking this one bit, and this happened because bits!
"Because your unworthy ears have been blessed by the Wubs, your welcome." she sounded so very confident that it was true.skull pounding Oberus worked his way back to his paws. It might of been him but it seemed like his veins were pounding to, his heartbeat slowed but pumping hard. Overall it hurt. "So what'd ya think?" This mare-
"Like the least you could do for trying to make me go deaf is point me to Sweet Apple Acres." Her chuckling stopped now but she kept smiling.
"Sure-" Vinyl lifted a hoof pointing past a Ginger bread looking store, Sugercube Corner. "Just past there, just keep walking, can't miss it." Oberus gave a grunt of thanks, an walked away. "We should hang out sometime-" She called " I'll introduce you to more sick beats." He really doubted he'd see her again, if he could help it. Having bleeding eardrums was not how he would like to spend a day.
Making his way down to a dirt road Oberus finally found time to himself. He didn't want to think to much about his predicament. Listening to the rhythmic falls of his own paws was quite soothing. The metallic bumps of the bracelet threw him off some. What be nice right now would be some rain, rain that bounced on thousands of leaves. That's why he really didn't like Equestria, to controlled. While not having to worry about tornadoes knocking the living shit out of homes was good and all but it does tend to get boring. The quiets a bonus though.
Humming a tune to himself, Oberus went into slower, pacing himself going with the song. Sound was lonesome, tired, lonely.
"A vagabond, battl-"
"What are you singing?" Jumping a little he kept walking not willing to show he was startled. The beating of wings landed to his right.
"I thought you were already gone Gilda." It was statement not a question. He was not found of Gilda. Repeatedly she'd come and see him when Rainbow Dash was busy which was a good hour out of his day. Just talking. He was sick of listening.
"I'm staying with Dash Remember? My breaks over in Two days though so I'll be gone soon. Where are you headed?"
"A job." He stopped talking trying to gather some time for to ditch her. " Why aren't you with Rainbow Dash?".
"She went to see some traveling showmare, and didn't so I went flying and say you, here I am." Showmare? he thought couldn't be. Reaching the sign for the farm. Oberus stopped at the entrance. Wondering if he just keep walking. "Oh doing farm work-" Gilda said her wings beating to get lift. "I'll leave you to it." She'd left after that, well if it afforded him quiet then it was probly worth it.
Time skip Nighttime
Buck fucking...er fuck bucking. Oberus spent the day enraged. After arriving he'd been given instructions by Applejack's older brother Big Macintosh or Big Mac, which after initial introductions was nothing more than eeyups' and hopes. He'd spent the first two hours trying to find the right density for his bones to buck. Twelve times he almost broke his legs, five times they fractured. Each time he had to stop and wait for them to heal before continuing
Around the third maybe fourth hour he'd possible gotten the hang of it knocking 36% of the apples out of the trees, which resulted in the necessity of a three maybe four more bucks. The all to ironic outcome of this, being pelted on the head with apples. Final count: 253 clocks to the head. Some time later five-ish Applejack had come in with hot cow mare fury over, as she put it
"That no good, two faced ratler showmare Trixe, Great and Powerful my plot." 30 minutes after she'd taken notice of his work praising him on a good first day.
'First day?! He wouldn't even have considered the day let alone more than three hours. Almost out he had thought to himself. Applejack had left again saying something about checking on Twilight. He was almost out when the youngest, Apple Bloom asked if he could stay for dinner. Now, the polite response is no thank. The Rude response is Hell to the Tartarus no, I'm bucking sick of apples. He got no chance to use either. Apple Bloom had brought the Deadliest move in the game. Puppy dog eyes. It was possible the most adorab- Ruthless and horrible things Oberus ever had to deal with. Born to a culture where you were told to ignore pleading for life and tears, what were you supposed to do when the question wasn't "Let me live!" But "could you stay?" These ponies confused him to eat.
Meeting Granny smith had to be the funniest thing of the day. After the initial screaming it went as so:
"So what kinda freaking lookin pony are you?" Her voice was actually kinda smooth for an old pony, little bumps and pauses in her speech.
"He's not a Pony Granny Smith-" The young filly corrected "He's a...a Hyena!"
"A Hyener? He looks more like a freaky lookin Diamond dog mixed with a Pony." One, hyenas and Diamond dogs hate each other, saying that to any other Hyena or Diamond dog her saggy neck line would be torn out, well Hyenas anyway Diamond dogs would have made her work to death so about an hour....maybe. Two that's basically what Diamond dogs are. A cross between what ever there progener Ade was and mares. Its not like you'd see a Diamond dog trying to mate with a normal dog.
"He's not going to shag Winona is he?" Said dog raised her head a fearful yip sounding.
"What?! No!! Tartarus No!"
"Granny Smith eww!!"
"Anope!!"
"Then welcome to the Apple Family." All was relatively quiet after that, Applejack had yet to come back, but the loud bangs in the distance said something was up. Leaving some time around ten stating he'd be back in the morning for work. Not really the last thing he wanted to deal with was more bucking.
Walking now was relatively quiet though watching smoke billow from the silhouette of ponyville while a giant transparent blue bear Roared and tore up the town. An Ursa Minor, nothing they couldn't handle. maybe a quick hunting trip would be nice.
Trixie POV hour later
She never should have stopped in this town. Ever since those idiots, Snips and Snails showed there devotion to her, Trixie thought maybe things would go pleasantly. Then they brought that Ursa minor. It ended up thrashing everypony who tried to stop it. Then that stinking, no good Twilight Sparkle used her magic to lull the Ursa to sleep. Trixie had fought a minor before...she just didn't know it was a minor at the time. An she had help. Ok she was the help and it was an accident.
Trixie kept quiet when a sound entered her ear. Splashing water. She wasn't sure she should continue toward it. She was nervous, loud banging and earth shaking howls had sounded some time ago. The option was taken from her when the splashing turned to patterned dripping, dull thumps of water to dirt. She wanted to run but what could possibly be-
"Trixie?" She shrieked falling flat on her plot. "Wow, and I tired to avoid you to." Emerging from the brush was a pony looking hound dripping what brown spotted fur tinted with flecks of red. His grin was soak in scarlet to. Ruby drops shining on fanged ivory.
"Ouroberus?" She said unsure if this was real.
"Oberus." He corrected. "Though maybe I need a name change, ponies do that a lot don't they? Ya know, match their cutie mark?" The great and Powerful Trixie was tongue tied. This creature before.... was almost as bad as any monster. But could think, and enjoyed every cut and bruise he caused..
"What are doing here?" Trixie asked she'd gotten up but there was no confidence to her.
"I need some help." He Spoke Lowly.
"You need help?" She laughed bitterly " You need no help from Trixie, Trixie needs your help...again" her laughter turned to crying. Trixie found her muzzle lifted to see two different colored eyes, green and purple.
"That's not true, you helped two years ago remember?"
Flash Back
A younger Trixie watched the strangest fight ever. A giant translucent Bear with huge teeth swatting at a smaller in comparison dog, pony, thing. It had bandages all over it the right side, face included. The bear swiped low, trying to knock the hound away. The hound lept over the paw snagging the bears Thumb, only managing to sprain the digit. Roaring angrily the bear sent the paw down. Dismounting the hound got caught in the shockwave of the impact sending him flying into a tree. Trixie started to panic that bear was about to squash the hound. Looking around she saw the bear was stuck in a fissure, it couldn't really move from where it was so why was the hound trying to fight. The Ursa brought a claw up, ready to smash the injured creature.
Trixie froze up. She couldn't help she was useless. She'd failed her entrance exam, she could hold a job what good was she. A sharp yelp caught her attention. The hound had sprained an ankle and unable to move quickly stuck to the mercy of the bear.a silent voice whispered in her ear, she felt weak, vulnerable. Against her own will her horn lit up, beside the strange pony hound an exact mirror copy appeared beside it. The bear hit the first, the second was blasted away showing it was the real one.
Letting out a deep throaty cackle it charged latching onto the bears ear. Rearing up the Ursa snarled fall back. With a resounding snap it broke its ankle. It began making noise similar to crying, yet the pony hound did not seem to care. Vicious ripping at the flesh of the Ursa while it cried shredding chunks of meat from its skull. Trixe couldn't take any more. She ran. Not caring where she went she ran. Galloping faster and faster, till the sounds of the Ursas moans faded to nothing. Or they stopped. Not looking ahead of her to check behind her she suddenly found her throat fought in a powerful grip. In front of her was the hound thing bandages falling away to show exposed layers of skin, and bone. Edges of it were burned.
"I thank you for your assistance." He chortled hoarsely.
"Y-you u-used me!" Trixie was scared. This creature killed a huge bear. What was it to do with her.
"But you were so willing!" It praised. "With out you I could never have gotten an Ursas' hide, so thank-" it paused it took her a while to realize it was waiting for her name.
"Trixie, Trixie Lulamoon." It smiled smiled as much as it beat, scared up cheeks could allow.
"Well great and powerful Trixie I'm Oberus, and I'm going to let you live." The grip around her neck tighten. "But first I need a simple illusion spell can ya do it?"
End
"And now I'm paying you back." Oberus stated. He pointed behind him across the stream. On the other side was a new wooden trailer, attached was a cart. over it was a blue tarp. What was under it was unknown just large bumps bigger than the cart itself.
"Wha-"
"Let's just say you won't lose your good name, when you leave, and you can say you bested an Ursa Major and Minor" Trixie really couldn't believe this. She smiled.
"What can the Great and Powerful trixie do for you?" Lifting a broken orange backpack from a bush. Pulling out a wrapped bundle he dropped it to the ground.
"A simple adaption."
