A large raspberry colored star lay above their heads. But it wasn't just any star. It was Twilight's cutie mark. Behind the star shot out a ray of bright purple, sapphire, and rose, the colors of Twilight's mane. Soon, everypony was looking at her. Suddenly, Lyra Heartstrings yelled, "You did a sonic starboom!" In a few seconds, all of the crowd was engulfing her in yells, pushes, screams, and shoves, just trying to look at her. But one pony wasn't trying to get to Twilight. One pony stood feet away, wings pulled at her side. That one pony was Rainbow Dash. Rainbow had a murderous look on her face. How could they have suddenly forgotten about her Sonic Rainboom? And why were they swamping a pony who had just gotten her wings? She had no idea, but she was going to prove that she was a better flier than Twilight. The Great RaceRainbow and Twilight stood at a white line right over the Ghastly Gorge. Many ponies had come to watch it, along with Applejack, Rarity, and Pinkie Pie. The Wonderbolts were there too, to see which pony to put on their team. Soarin' was especially rooting for Rainbow Dash. "On your mark," Fluttershy squeaked. Rainbow and Twilight spread their wings. "Get set," Rainbow licked her lips. "GO!" Fluttershy waved the white flag as the ponies took off. Rainbow was already ahead, but she kept flapping her wings to make sure she stayed ahead. Rainbow turned her head around and stuck out her tongue at Twilight. When she turned her head back in front again, she crashed through a large tangle of brambles. She couldn't stop herself from tumbling around, and with each movement she felt a painful prick. Rainbow finally tumbled out, her mane and tail torn. Her wings also had thorns in them, but she didn't let that stop her. She started flying ever so fast again, and caught up with Twilight. They sped through the gorge The StartRainbow Dash calmly swam through the clouds to relax. Suddenly, something purple crashed into the cloud, sending Rainbow flying. She quickly got her balance, and flew up to see what it was. "Twilight? What are you doing up here?" asked Rainbow. "I'm flying, silly! Wow, I just feel so much more comfortable in the clouds! Sorry I bumped into you." replied Twilight as she and Rainbow landed on the cloud. "You sure are getting used to those wings," Rainbow said with a hint of envy. "Yes, I am!" replied Twilight. She then abruptly took off, and then started flying around a cloud. She kept getting faster and faster until she swiftly pulled away and stared at what she had made. The cloud was now in the shape of Twilight's cutie mark. "Pretty neat, huh?" asked Twilight. Rainbow stared. It was pretty neat alright, pretty arrogant. A sudden wave of jealousy washed over Rainbow. Putting on her game face she replied, "Pretty cool, but I can do better!" Rainbow swiftly cleared all but one of the clouds in the sky, and for her grand finale, she flew as fast as she could around the cloud she hadn't cleared. But she bumped hard into the cloud, knocking her out and sending her plummeting to her doom. Twilight saw and jumped down to rescue Rainbow. But Rainbow was plummeting at such a speed that Twilight had to flap her wings about 3 times a second. She was flying so fast that a loud boom hit her ears and something purple and rose shot out behind her. But she didn't have time to fret over loud booms and colors. Twilight scooped up Rainbow just before she hit the ground and landed. Panting, she put down Rainbow and said, "Are you ok?" Rainbow's eyes fluttered open and she mumbled, "Yeah," and stood up. She saw something so amazing above her that she yelled. The ChallengePinkie Pie was nearby and bounced over to see what was going on, but before she could say "Surprise!", she noticed the fading raspberry star in the sky. "Wow, Twilight, did you make that?!" asked Pinkie. "Cause that's totally super duperly AWESOME!!!" shouted Pinkie in her usual girly voice. "I don- yes, I did make that!" Twilight stated proudly as she puffed out her chest. "Whoa, Sugarcube, I knew you could fly, but I've never seen you do that before! It might be even better than Rainbow's Sonic Rainboom!" said a shocked Applejack, who had gathered with Fluttershy and Rarity to see what was happening. "Wow, Twilight, that really was amazing! Yay!" added Fluttershy, though she didn't even see the thing happen. And it already faded away. "Yes, Twilight, if you're such a good flyer, maybe the Wonderbolts would let you join!" Rarity stated with a flip of her royal purple mane. Rainbow had finally had enough. All her friends had abandoned her just to brag over somepony who only did this thing once?! And the "Sonic Starboom" had already gone away, so why were they acting like it was the greatest thing ever? Rainbow flew high around all the gawking ponies and screamed, "I challenge "Princess" Twilight Sparkle to a race! Who ever wins gets to fly with the Wonderbolts!" Rainbow was also furious because Rarity knew her life long dream was to be a Wonderbolt, yet she just sat there and said Twilight should do it!? Ugh, to Rainbow, it was the Mysterious Mare Do Well all over again. Twilight was shocked at first, but smirked and said, "Fine."
