Morning already?
I woke up from a long nap to see the morning daylight begin to pull over the horizon and shimmer through the window. I stretched out my paws and opened my mouth wide to yawn, loosening my whiskers in the process. As I took a long look at the sun beginning to rise over the mountains of Equestria, I thought to myself, I can already tell today is gonna be a great day!
I could already hear the sounds of Rarity's sewing machine being put to use. She had been working on a huge order for a client recently, and it seemed like all she had been able to do for the past few days was mend, sew and stitch. I jumped off my cat bed and sprinted for Rarity's work room, slowing down to see Rarity hard at work. Her mane was messy. It looked like she had been working through the night. I could tell she needed a break.
I meandered myself over to her while at her work station and rubbed my fur against her leg, purring loudly for her to hear. I know you can't understand me and all, but you wanna take a break and come play with me, right? Rarity looked down to see me, but instead of the happy expressions I thought she'd be wearing, she looked annoyed and irritated.
"Not now, Opal," she said, nudging me away with her leg and going back to sewing.
Oh, that's OK. I know you have a lot of work to do. Maybe later.
I then stepped my way into the kitchen, trying to use a good drink of water to occupy my time in the meanwhile. I could always come back to Rarity when she was done, and how long could she possibly work on that same project without taking a moment to rest? Looking down at my dish, however, I thought, Oh, I guess you forgot to fill my water dish this morning. That's OK. I know how busy you get and all. Maybe I'll just go find something to play with.
I then tried looking around for my toy mouse, suddenly remembering, Oh, that's right... You gave it to Sweetie Belle for her school project... and then she lost it... Maybe I could play with my ball of yarn! Feeling a new wave of hope, I scampered back into Rarity's bedroom. It's... all gone. I guess Rarity must have used it for something she was working on.
Without having any other ideas on how to entertain myself, I walked back to Rarity's work station, sitting in the doorway to watch her work. Minutes passed by without a single word, even though she usually loves talking to me when she works. At least, that's what I thought... After about 20 long minutes, however, I began to clean myself, licking up my fur just so I had something to do to occupy myself. As I did, though, I accidentally got a little too much fur in my nose, causing me to sneeze.
Rarity suddenly jolted up and looked back at me, completely surprised to see me just standing there in the doorway. You mean, you didn't even know I was still here?
"Opal, I'm sorry, but I can't have you in here right now. I don't want to get any of your hair on these dresses before they manage to get to my clients."
Sadly, I then drudged back onto my cat bed. Laying down, I looked back at the window, seeing the sun shine as it ascended higher into the sky. The day was still young! I was sure that there was some way I could turn this day around to make it the best day ever after all, but how would I do that?
Suddenly, I got an idea! I jumped out of my bed, pranced down the stairs and walked through my cat door to see the nature outside. I wasn't out here to roll around on the grass, though (even though that did sound really nice). I strutted my way down the streets of Ponyville until I came to a familiar location. It was a small wooden house, built on top of a tree with a wooden bridge that lead up to its door. I was practically sprinting my way up the bridge so I could get to the window, where I saw a pegasus, unicorn and earth pony all sitting down, trying to think.
"How about snake charming?" the pegasus said.
"No way!" the earth pony replied. "Not after the time you thought that it'd be a good idea to be cutie mark crusader escape artists."
Seeing that they looked frustrated, I jumped inside, immediately walking over to the pensive unicorn and purring happily. "Opal?" she said with a crack in her voice. "What are you doing here?"
I'm here to play! Maybe a scratch behind the ears, too.
"Sweetie Belle, isn't that your sister's cat?" the pegasus asked.
"Yeah," said Sweetie, who instead of petting me was putting me back onto the window sill. "Sorry, Opal, but we've been missing some serious crusading time lately. I need you to go back to Rarity's." With that, she shut the window, blocking me from coming back in. I tried putting my paw against the glass and meowing, hoping that she'd change her mind, but she had already gone back to her meeting with the other crusaders.
Sadly, I walked back home, and for some reason, playing in the grass just didn't sound as appealing anymore. I walked back through my cat door and up to Rarity's work station, hoping that she would at least be close to finishing. When I got to the top of the stairs, though, I noticed that the sound of Rarity's sewing machine had completely disappeared. Filled with a new hope, I sprinted over to Rarity's bedroom... but she was already fast asleep.
Well, I guess I'll just take another cat nap, I thought, sadly limping back up to my bed. After digging my claws into the bed to get comfortable, I looked back outside to see the sky, the sun nowhere in sight as it must have been over the boutique by this point. I closed my eyes one more time, blocking out the light and waiting for my dreams to take me.
It's OK, Opal... All my birthdays are like this...
She'll remember one year...
