However, what else could a simple student afford for his stipends? Several glasses of beer in an old bar somewhere on the outskirts of the Crystal City – a city that dazzled with the offers of magnificent foods and drinks on every corner.
Dark Blaze sighed heavily as he swept a drop of sweat from his brow. He hurried to the entrance of the bar, thanking the abyss he’d made it before the usual gang of drunks covered it up.
Heavy with hard-earned bits, his purse dangled by his side. The strap rubbing his neck and the sun flickering in his blue eyes. With a small grunt, he reluctantly tried to cover himself from the annoying star. The wind swayed his long, dark blue mane back and forth, sometimes wrapping his 'blue fountain at midnight' – as his mother called it – around his shoulders.
Back in high school, Blaze had earned a nickname, one that had clung persistently to him his whole life: Sombrero. No doubt a mockery of his coat, so similarly hued to Sombra’s. His classmates always joked that he was as black as the infamous king.
"His coat was grey, not black!" Dark Blaze would often angrily bark back, but all that didn't help him from endless taunts and pranks. Not even the threat of his red aura could dispel his tormentors’ idiocy.
The huge, muscular gryphon guarding the entrance dropped an emotionless glance at Dark Blaze. “No trouble,” he grunted as he granted Dark Blaze passage through. This guy was a literal powerhouse, which Blaze always took into account when he drank; forgetting all your troubles wasn't worth creating new ones over. He’d seen the bouncer’s methods.
Not that Dark Blaze was incapable of combat: being a gifted scholar of the ways of fire magic – indicated by his fireball cutie mark – he could easily burn anything to a crisp. "Oh, yes of course you can sit here. I don't mind at all," he said.
The unicorn smiled. "Thank you," she said quietly. "We should probably get acquainted. My name is Krystal, nice to meet you."
Blaze looked over at Krystal again. Too bad he could only see the upper half of her body – she seemed like a very beautiful girl. Although, her pegasus friend looked like a darn model.
"My name is Dark Blaze... Or just Blaze, for short. Nice to meet you," he replied. The pegasus giggled slightly.

"Drink up. It's a gift," Blanket offered, seeing Blaze hesitate to take the glass. "You too, Kryssie. Have some wine, girl; you seem far too strained."
"I know, Blanket. Don't remind me," Krystal snapped, kissing the edge of the glass and drinking the wine. When she placed the glass down, a few red drops remained on her lips. She swept them away with a single movement of her hoof.
"So, Blazey, would you be so kind as to tell us girls about the Empire’s attractions? I just recently got here and Krystal hasn’t had the opportunity to show me around much yet," Blanket stated.
Blaze exhaled and leaned back in his chair. "Well, there's a lot to see here. I've been living here for a couple of months, but I honestly haven't walked around too much myself. I'm quite busy, you see. But there are a few interesting places..."
Dark Blaze spoke for a while to Blanket, telling her about the few interesting attractions he knew.
