The goddess of magic had no idea why she was out in the freezing rain, only that something very important was about to happen. The last of... the last of what? A distant memory in the back of her mind drove her forwards to a little grove of flowers on a side street in New Canterlot. The rain was taking its toll on the little petals and the last of the living flowers stood beaten, but proud against the torrent. It was dying, that much was inevitable. Like everything around the princess it would have its last breath of life and extinguish while she continued on.
Just a flower...
Wet and weary, Twilight chuckled to herself. She must be senile in her old age. But immortals don't become senile, she chided herself: they just forget.
She leaned down over the flower, protecting it's delicate petals from the storm. She tried to recall why this patch was important, but the memory remained elusive. Not since the fire had plants such a hold on her.
The fire... The one that took Sweet Apple Acres.
Twilight remembered.
Nothing lasts forever, and in time memories of friendship had faded away. History books were written again and again, each with less and less, buildings were rebuilt, monuments replaced and the only constant to the Princess was change.
They say that you die twice. Once when your body ceases and again when your name is spoken for the last time. For the first time in an eon Twilight remembered their names: Applejack, Rarity, Spike... there had to be more.
Twilight would not remember why this flower was important. The little grove had once been a field of rich food for her animal friends and this, the last flower in it was the final evidence that her friend had ever existed.
But she remembered the name.
"Fluttershy."
Twilight sat, hunched over and carefully protecting the last visible ripple of the life of kindness. She tried to use magic to revive the petals, give it strength to weather the storm and pollen, but giving it her heart wasn't enough.
She held it in the light of magic as long as she could, waiting for the doomed flower to perish and coddling it between her hooves. Twilight poured enough power into the flower to start a small sun, just for a few more seconds of life. As night continued it's glow dimmed. Tears streamed down her face.
Just a little longer. A little longer to remember... something.
As the light of life faded she let go of the flower's petals. Though she would not notice it the last of the fading white stars upon her mark flared with light and disappeared. For the first time in an eternity Twilight was alone.
Her heart broke, and there an immortal died.
