I Will Flap My Wings For You
And Bring The Medal Home
Load Full StoryI breathed deeply. I was really here. I was at the Equestrian Games. I went through so much training and it could all pay off at the end. I was standing next to the best of the best.
Spitfire.
She was on Team Cloudsdale. She was also on the Wonderbolts. The best flyers in the world!!! Now, I was gonna be competing against her.
I looked to the stands and found my friends in the front row. All four of them were there. I looked beside them and found my marefriend. Her bubbly behaviour was probably multiplied by three, whether that's possible for her or not.
"Yeah Rainbow!" Pinkie shouted. Man, I love her voice. Ever since I became her marefriend, my life has become 20% better. I waned at her so she knew I heard. But then again, how could anyone not?
"Racers to the start!" The announcer yelled. I walked up to the starting line. Yes! I was on the inside! I looked at Spitfire and scowled in a friendly way. She chuckled.
"Good luck." She said.
"Ha! I won't need it! But thanks anyways!" I replied.
"Ready..." The announcer said. I bent into my starting position.
I heard the air gun shoot, so I jetted off the starting cloud like a bullet. I looked behind me to see that Spitfire wasn't far behind.
She slowly passed me as we crossed the finish line. Lap one down. 9 more to go. Sweat started dripping down my face. Spitfire was getting farther and farther away. The Cloudsdale section cheered loudly. I ignored the burning sensation in my wings as I struggled to keep up.
We passed the finish line again. Lap three. I curved the sharp corner, and I gained first place again. I flapped my wings so much, I think they might fall off. A tear fell from my face.
Don't get me wrong, that was a tear from going so fast. Seriously.
I slowed my pace so my wings could rest a little bit, but Spitfire passed me again. I sped up my pace again. I repeated 'ouch' in my head every time my wing beated. I started panting as we crossed the line into lap 4. Spitfire was even farther ahead of me now.
Lap 5. We were both getting faster with each lap. I heard Ponyville's section cheer louder. I screwed my eyes shut and focused on my wings. I opened them every few seconds to see when to turn. I was slowly inching closer to Spitfire.
Lap 6. I flapped my wings. Harder than I ever had before. My rainbow mane blew in front of my face. I struggled to brush in out, but it just blew right back in. This caused my to lag behind quite a bit. I curved around the corner. I could see the line ahead of me. Spitfire had already passed it, but I was close.
Lap 7. The thought of dropping out crossed my mind, but I knew I couldn't do that. My friends would be devastated. I curved the first corner. I inhaled deeply to catch my breath. I curved around the second corner and flapped hard again.
Lap 8. The laps flew by faster and faster each time. I could now feel my wings throbbing in pain. They were basically begging me to stop. In wing language. I watched Spitfire's tail wave in the wind.
Keep flying, keep flying. Don't stop.
The thought kept running the through my head.
Lap 9. More tears ran down my face. I gritted my teeth together. I flew faster. Faster.... I curved the last corner.
Final. Lap. This was my last chance to pass Spitfire. I flapped my wings harder than ever before. I couldn't do it. She was too far ahead. I let out a sigh. There was no way I'd win now.
Then I heard it.
"GO DASHIE! YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!"
An energetic and bubbly voice called out. It was Pinkie. I could do it. For that medal.
For her.
I sped up. I saw as Spitfire's orange tail got closer and closer. I saw a clear, white bubble cup the area in front of me. The finish line was close. I was now right behind her. I passed her as the cup turned pointy and my speed was now faster than sound. I crossed the finish the finish line! In FIRST! As if anything couldn't get any better, I zoomed forward and a Sonic Rainboom erupted behind me. A rainbow trail raced behind me as I flew.
The crowd exploded into cheers and applause. As soon as my speed died down, I flew to the front row of the crowd. I finally closed my wings as my friends squished me in a giant group hug. Once I got free, I walked over to Pinkie. She smiled at me and I smiled back.
"I did it." I said. She's smiled again. Somehow, she was able to contain her excitement.
"I know." She said. "You did it." She said.
"I did it for you." I said. She smiled and blushed. She brushed my mane out of my eyes with her hoof. She pulled me in and locked our muzzles together.
After we parted, her smile grew.
"You deserved that." Pinkie said. "You're something special." I blushed and looked away.
I look over to see Spitfire with a sad-ish expression on her face. She was beside Soarin, who was in the crowd. I walked over to her and Pinkie followed.
Hey, Spitfire! What wrong?" I asked.
She sighed. "I've never lost a single match I've been in." She said. "I let Soarin down." She looked back down.
"Hey," I said. "The same thing would've happened to me if I lost." Spitfire looked up.
"But, you just have a bunch of friends." She said. "I have a coltfriend." She said as she glanced at Soarin.
"Actually," I said. "I do have a special somepony." I looked behind me as Pinkie bounced out from behind.
She giggled. "You're not the only one with a special somepony anymore!" She said.
"What I'm trying to say is, don't be a sore loser." I said. "Heck, embrace the fact that you made it to the finals!" I said.
"She's right," Soarin jumped in. All of our head twisted at him. "Sure, it would have been awesome if Spitfire got first," He turned to Her. "But you didn't let me down." He said.
"Really?" She said, looking up. Soarin pulled her into a hug.
"Really." He said as he kissed Spitfire's forehead.
"Thanks, Rainbow Dash." She's smiled. "Maybe you're not such a newbie."
"Thanks!" I said before running off.

So here I am now. It's the middle of the night, and my fore hoof is around Pinkie and she's snuggled up against my side. We're both in Pinkie's bed. Pinkie was all partied out, and fell asleep once her head hit the pillow. I stared at the ceiling reflecting the day. I looked at the gold medal that hung around my neck. I used my free hoof to take it off.
I carefully slipped the medal around Pinkie's neck. She smiled in her sleep. I pulled her closer and kissed her cheek.
I fell asleep knowing this day would go down in history.
