Shining Armor pursed his lips. “I think we’ve taken this as far as we should.”
Glaze Burner threw back his head, his long orange mane bouncing back as he said, “But the ceremony is too sacred to just stop here—”

“We’re practicing vows, not the actual ceremony,” he said.

Shining kept his gaze revolving around the room to avoid looking at the blond-coated earth pony. They were in Glaze’s studio, the earth pony made ceramics and sculptures on display all over Canterlot. A shelf lined the wall with several half-finished works waiting to be fired by the kiln in the backroom in the far side of the studio. Glaze’s studio belonged in the dirty “starving artists” district of Canterlot. The title remained as a joke, for only successful artist could afford to live in Canterlot in the first place, but they liked to keep the streets messy to give it a distinction from the rest of the town. Café Caffeine nodded towards the fridge. “Had to throw some things out to make room, but it’s chilling out now.”
Shining spun around and flung Highlights off him. “You threw food out?” he demanded.
Glaze trotted across the den and around a black granite bar into a sharply furnished kitchen. He swung open the fridge and said, “Just looks like all the left-overs you keep.”
“I cook all my meals at the beginning of the month!”
Glaze grabbed a bottle of coconut-rum from the fridge and placed it on the counter before he said, “And that’s why I never eat over here.” He retrieved a bottle of off-brand vodka next.
“Hey, we’ll cover it, no problem,” Laced Steel said.
Shining looked from the unicorn back to Glaze and said, “You will, but tonight you’re leaving.”
Glaze set out the fifth bottle of liquor and propped his elbows on Shining’s countertop. “Hey now, no party-pooping tonight. Save that stuff for your reception.”
The groom told them, “I’ll call the guard.”
Laced winced. He was among the royal guard. “No need to go that far—”
“Yeah,” Glaze said, “Wouldn’t look good to have three out of four of your grooms-colts not show up because they got arrested.”
The groom scowled. “Fine then, party. But leave me out of it.” Shining shouldered past Laced and slid open the glass door to his balcony. He embraced the cool night air with a sigh and shut the door behind him with his magic.
A hoof caught in the doorway.
“Yikes, slam that a little harder why don’t you?” he heard Glaze say. The earth pony grunted and forced the door open enough for him to step through before it sealed behind him, the lock clicking with it.

A warmer hoof rested on his shoulder. “Hey, you alright?”
Shining turned his head and saw his friend frowning, his eyes lit with concern. He sighed. “Thanks Glaze, I know you mean well, but it’s just not for me.”

“I’m saying this—” Glaze jabbed Shining’s jacket, “should come off sometime between now and when you see Cadence tomorrow. You’re going to have your whole life with that beautiful, so why not tonight enjoy yourself?”

Highlights snickered. “Says the barista.”
While Café glowered Laced asked, “When is the entertainment getting here, Glaze?”
“Entertainment?”

Several rum-runners later and Shining felt relaxed enough to slip out of his jacket. He sat with the four other stallions on the cushions at the far side of the den, their half-finished shots lined up on a low glass-top coffee-table. Shining paused inside, wondering where his friend disappeared to—
