Blood soaked the grass of the field, the stench of death lingered as the kingdoms of Man and Pony fought. One for its very existence the other to stop a perceived threat. Magic was firing through the air like fireworks, each spell ending in the death of its targets. Warriors clashed the sounds of steel on steel, woven into a deadly song and dance, the one who fell behind could fall no further. Machines of war tearing into ranks of opposing troops, their loads fire from the heavens. The Reaper would catch no break tonight as he claimed the souls of the dead. Man was losing in this effort, this last battle that would spell victory or extinction, and later the loss of an entire culture. The armies of Man was made up of Men and Women, boys, and girls that could hold a sword. Only caretakers, some farmers and healers left behind to take care of the babies and children unable to fight due to being young or disabled, while farmers tend to the farms and healers to the wounded.
There were no shouts of glory from the Humans, only a silent final charge, no war horns blowing, no final speech by the King and Queen. Only blades, spears, shields, rocks, maces and arrows clashing. The only battle cries came from the ponies knowing this was the end of the line, but they still took massive amounts of loss, the cornered Humans shedding much blood for each yard gained.
The Human King and Queen fought alongside of their troops carving a path of death, Hell bent to get to the Pony Sisters. They forsaken the traditions of honor along with their troops, as there was no honor to be had here, only survival. The King looked at his wife before making their way up the hill where the two Sisters watched, now facing the elite protectors of the Royal Sisters, that called themselves Luna and Celestia. Another twenty minutes later the King and Queen looked at each other knowing that this was the end, that they won or lost there was no surrendering, only Life or Death, Victory, or likely extinction. The Human leaders looked at their army one last time and smiled at their true courage, fighting through odds that were seemingly impossible, despite the fear they held.
They looked at their kingdom in ruin and at the castle that housed their adopted children, a Draconequus named Discord, do to his chaotic although well meaning tendencies, and a Alicorn named Nightmare Moon, named for her tendency to sleep in the day and wake at night. In what seemed a short time the two were grown up, both past sixteen, the age of adulthood. Now Discord was twenty one years old and Nightmare thirty. They were watching over the castle, and preparing a retreat deeper into the forest and make his way to the Dark woods with as many survivors as possible where they would hide. What the King and Queen didn’t know was that their son and daughter were scrying the battle and more specifically their parents, the castle and surrounding towns already evacuated,the people near or already at their destination.
The King and Queen looked back at their foes, weapons in hand after looking at the armies for what seemed an eternity but was a moment. Celestia and Luna brought forth their own weapons and charged forth, the blades of the two sets of enemies met, and sparks flew. Neither side giving ground.
Both knew the importance of this fight, the climax that had been coming for years ever since the disagreement six years ago, all over the King and Queens Adoption of Discord and Nightmare Moon, as Discord was the son of the Draconequus King, his birth mother dying in childbirth and his father died in a defensive war against the ponies when Discord was five that forced the remaining Draconequus into the Dark Forest. Nightmare Moon was the Daughter of the Rulers of a race of bat like ponies that called themselves, Darri, they possessed magic affiliated with the shadows. Both rulers of the Darri died from an incurable diseases.
The reason it started a war between them, was due to the fact Discord and Nightmare Moon were part of races that were once enemies of Equestria. The human kingdom was friends with the Draconequus and Darri some even fought with the Draconequus during the Dracon-Equestrian War.
With the reason they fight firmly in their minds they fought occasionally injuring each other with a bruise or minor cut. It was with a parry that Celestia was able to get the chance to dig her sword into the Queens gut, the entire Human army heard the Kings scream of rage at the death of his wife, this sent the entire Human army into a furry seeking to kill even more of the enemy, gone was any trace of fear in the Humans hearts. They fought harder and more ferocious. A girl was even disarmed but before the pony could make the final strike, the girl charged stunning the guard and ripped the weapon out of the ponies magic field and drove the spear the guard had through his left eye and further into his skull, and moved to another target. Some even took and shook off wounds that under any other circumstance would put them into shock.
Nightmare and Discord watched their adoptive mother die, and instead of continuing to watch they made their way to their father intent on helping him against the two that killed their Mother. Hoping they could arrive before their father could meet the same fate. They both knew they were adopted by the King and Queen as the two rulers did not want to keep it a secret so upon adulthood the Discord and Nightmare were told their origins and even how their parents were like before their deaths. But they both loved their adopted parents and each other all the same.
Meanwhile the King now enraged fought more aggressively than before, he blocked and dodged less and instead parried and attacked at every opening he could find in the two, the only thing keeping him from blindly swinging was the thought of his Son and Daughter and the promise he and his wife made to Discord and Nightmare Moons birth parents, their close allies and more importantly closest friends before they died. In hope that they would unite the Humans, Draconequus, and the Darri, once again.
Nightmare Moon and Discord finally arrived an hour later, it was now dusk, as they flew over the battlefield looking at the bodies of humans laying and rotting on the ground while it seemed that the ponies took all of their own dead with them. A quarter of a mile away was the hill that their parents fought Luna and Celestia on. Discord and Nightmare quickly made their way there to see the bodies of their Mother and Father lay on the ground painting it with their blood.
Enraged further, Nightmare Moon started to run after the distant Equestrian army. But Discord stopped his sister, instead saying, “Not now, Sister now we bury the dead and mourn them, and hold a feast in their name, we have a responsibility now to our people. But first let me do something.” Discords voice was low and solemn, not happy and cheery as it usually was.
“You are right brother, we will have our revenge, but now is not the time.” Nightmare responded.
Discord sadly looked at his older sister, hating to see her like this. He charged his magic “Sister lend me some of your magic.”
Nightmare did so, and with the two magics combined he weaved it and later released it, when he did the former battlefield was covered in blood red flowers and on the hill were two crystal graves next to each other so that one could see the face of the King and Queen each had a single grave stone depicting birth and death along with their names, but behind it was a larger gravestone that read.
Requiescant in pace, et matrem Memores sumus vestri
With that they protected it with wards and left the area to go to where their subjects were and tell them the sad news. Nightmare and Discord were never the same after that, after they found a new King and Queen to lead the humans well, and recorded the events of the war along with all historical records still known in scrolls that would always be bound to the archives and never deteriorate, the two left with a fire in their eyes and one thing on their hearts.
