The Twin Mountains
A thousand years ago, Celestia banished Luna to the moon in a catastrophic fit of reluctant, righteous anger and went on to live in self-inflicted exile, or such is the doctrine agreed upon by the three churches of the Equestrian Valley. However, no one has ever been able to confirm this because no one has ever been able to venture to the peak of the mountain Celestia is believed to inhabit.
Ponykind is happily sequestered away in a valley between Mount Celestia and her mirror, Mount Luna, but their isolation is by no means permanent. The eastern mountains once thought impassable have been crossed, but not to the benefit of everyone. The griffons that ruled over the zebra in the savanna have since been deposed, and now interaction between the zebras and their former master is always tenuous.
The ancient Dragon Doors that separate the valley from the frozen north for reasons long forgotten haven't been disturbed since Luna's banishment, but just because something is, doesn't mean it must always be, and not all who inhabit the south wish to stay hidden from the north.
