"Twilight!" called out a cyan pegasus pony, sitting on a cloud. Above her was a blue sky, below her was the town of Ponyville. Ponies were all around the small town. "I know you can do it, the lessons seemed like they were helping you!"
"I don't know if I can do it..." replied a lavender mare, flapping her wings very fast in an effort to get herself off of the ground.
"Come on Twilight, you've flown before!"
"I'm trying, but my wings won't...ugh...lift me off of the ground!"
"You're flapping them too hard,"
"What?"
"You're flapping them too hard, you have to flap them slower, but hard enough to get off of the ground,"
"How do I do that?"
"It's hard to explain how to fly - Stop! You'll sprain them!"
Twilight stopped flapping her wings and groaned, frustrated with the fact she couldn't fly. Flying was the easier way to get around, and once you got used to it, it took less energy than teleporting or running.
"Look, Rainbow Dash, I appreciate the lessons, but I'm just not getting it,"
"I guess we'll have to try again tomorrow,"
"This is no use! We're both just wasting our time,"
"No, you need to learn how to fly. Look, I know it's new to have wings and all, but you have to learn how to fly, because it's the easiest way known to pony kind to move around,"
"Maybe there are a few books I could read to help me-"
"Books won't help! Books can't tell you how to fly!"
"It's worth a shot! Besides, this," said Twilight, gesturing to Rainbow Dash and her wings, "obviously isn't working out."
"Fine." said Rainbow Dash, and she turned around, resting on the cloud. Twilight was a new princess. She had been a princess for about a week, and she's still adjusting to her wings. It's not easy being a unicorn, knowing not one thing about wings, then all of a sudden, POOF, you're a princess, and you can't even work your own wings.
It's not easy.
Pegasus fillies, they always have to learn how to fly, and it takes awhile, just like getting your cutie mark.
Quite frankly, Twilight feels like a filly right now.
To practice, Twilight flapped her wings, heading to her library. She flapped not too hard, but not too soft and found herself hovering above the stone ground. Yes! I'm flying! Now, just to figure out how to move, thought Twilight. She tried to angle her wings to move forward. She moved forward, but unfortunately, she was moving very slowly. Only about 0.5 miles per hour. She sped up, and she eventually reached the library. She trotted in, very proud of herself, and levitated out a few books. "Wingology, no. Pegasus Wings? no. Aha! How To Fly!" she spoke to herself, dropping the other books, leaving just one floating in a hot pink aura in front of Twilight, titled "How Pegasi Learn To Fly". There was a matching aura around Twilight's horn. She galloped up the stairs, then sat down at a nearby table, set the book down and opened it. She read through it, but nothing seemed to help. She already learned all these things from Rainbow Dash. But one thing stood out. She looked at it and said, "So that's what I'm doing wrong!"
~~~
Twilight flapped her wings gently, and it lifted her off of the ground. She flapped them the slightest bit faster and she was lifted upwards. She looked for Rainbow Dash, and found her on a nearby cloud. "Perfect," she muttered to herself, and started flapping towards her. She landed silently on the cloud, and said, "Hi!" to the cyan pegasus beside her, rather loudly, awaking her from her slumber. "What?!" she jumped up out of instinct. "T-Twilight? But how did you- the book? BOOKS? The book taught you how to fly!?"
"Yes, actually. You see, I basically got the hovering down, except I couldn't ascend. By the way, I can stand on clouds,"
"Most ponies with wings can. But, what book did you read?"
"It's called 'How Pegasi Learn to Fly',"
"Wow, um... okay... I guess,"
"Yeah, books really do wonders, don't they?"
"Not really,"
"What about Daring Do?"
"Oh, yeah, she rocks,"
"I'm guessing you weren't expecting a book to teach me how to fly,"
"That's not how I learned to fly,"
"Well, considering the fact you think reading makes you an egghead, I didn't really think that was how you learned how to fly,"
"Flying is awesome, books are for eggheads - except for Daring Do - and if you put them together... it just feels wrong,"
"Not for me! Flying is amazing!" With that, Twilight flew off the cloud and flapped around Ponyville, and greeting pegasi who flew nearby her. A few pegasi looked suprised to see an alicorn, flying through, some just shrugged it off and some nearly screamed like little filly fangirls. She smiled as she flew about, loving every second of it. The wind in her mane and the slower pace... I think I just found a new relaxing technique, thought Twilight, as she descended, trying not to tire out her wings too easily. She might have some more relaxing to do later!
Rainbow Dash looked flustered as Twilight flew around. How could a book teach a pony how to fly? They're just pages. Measly little pages.
The page listed one fact that Rainbow Dash did not. But what was it? What did the book say that I didn't?
