Game On and Off
Shells exploded everywhere. Ash and dust covered the area so thick, Luna couldn't see anything ahead of her. Her heart was racing, almost as quickly as her worried footsteps. She had no room for nerves, she needed to get to the checkpoint. She tried to find some of her comrades, but none were anywhere near her. Suddenly, a spatter of red hit her goggles, she had been it. In the chaos, she couldn't see where the shot had come from, or where she could hide. Another shot came, and another. She fell to the ground and her vision went from colour to grey, grey to black.
“COME ON!” Luna screamed, throwing the controller to the ground and kicking the floor angrily. “That's three times already!”
Luna lay back on her bed and stared up at the ceiling. She hadn't had to do much the last while. During the day she would sleep to keep her strength up for raising the moon and the long night ahead. When it came time for her to raise the moon, she would do so quickly, and head back inside to her room. Normally, Luna would just write stories about characters from her favourites stories in a little book she kept next to her bed. But recently, she had purchased a new little bit o technology, what was called a 'video game system', and had taken to spending her nights playing the different games she could buy. Currently, her favourite was “Call of Pony”. Favourite, meaning she loved to hate it. She would play a few levels, then a couple co-op games, and after losing more than once, she would rage, throw the controller and complain about it. She was in that phase of the night at the moment.
“It's stupid anyway...” Luna pouted. “How do ponies even fire guns... So stupid. Even I could come up with something better than that, and I'm new to this whole thing.” That gave Luna an idea. An incredible idea. “I will make my own game! It'll be way better than Call of Pony!”
Luna ran out of her room, straight to Celestia's bedroom. Bursting through the door, Luna bounced up and down excitedly. The sound made Celestia sit straight up in bed. Rubbing her eyes, Celestia yawned and shook her head.
“What's the problem, Luna?” Celestia recited, opening her eyes wider.
“I just had an awesome idea, sister!” Luna practically squealed. Realizing she looked a little silly, she acted chill. “I mean... I just thought of something, wanna hear it?”
“Certainly, Luna.” Celestia smiled. Celestia had originally been very nervous about buying Luna violent video games, but had caved when Luna brought up that Nightmare Moon had been scarier than any old video game.
“Okay.” Luna got a little more excited again. “So. It's a game. There's this princess named Lu-er-Moony, and she does a thing with another thing, and stuff really hits the fan! So her big sister Cele-um-Sunny decides that they should go on a huge adventure, with ninjas and pirates and lasers and stuff. But, in a big twist ending, it turns out what they were looking for was each other all along, and it all gets resolved with a big hug, y'know, for the kids. Then, there's a classy pop song in the credits so the soundtrack'll move units, and at the end of the credits, there's a plot device that makes a sequel inevitable. But we keep the fans waiting until there's a huge fanbase, and then we release the sequel which makes everypony everywhere happy!”
“That sounds really nice, Luna.” Celestia nodded.
“I know! I know!” Luna bounced again. “I'm gonna go get to work on it right now!” Luna ran back out of the room, leaving Celestia in peace again.
“Have fun, Luna.” Celestia closed her eyes and lay back down. “That girl... What a free spirit...”
Luna got right to work. She had no idea how to make a video game, but she knew it needed artwork and concepts, so she started it. Fishing out her pencils and some paper, she got right to work. The main character was a blue Alicorn whose cutie mark was a crescent moon. She decided to make it a waning crescent, so it was opposite of her waxing crescent.
“Now there is absolutely no resemblance.” Luna smiled before moving on to work on a picture of the other main character.
This one was a white Alicorn with the sun as her cutie mark. Then an idea hit her like a ton of foam bricks (because rock ones hurt).
“What if they could come together and make an Alicorn with a solar eclipse as her cutie mark!” Luna dropped everything else and began to draw her combination. “It should be blue, becuase blue is awesome!”
After she was done, she admired her work. It looked perfect to her. She had even been able to design some enemies for the game based on different animals and stuff.
“Now, what else do I need?” Luna asked herself, looking at all of her pictures. “Oh! I know!”
Luna began to rummage through her dresser, hoping to find what she was looking for. When she found nothing, she looked up, only to notice Celestia standing in the doorway, looking at the mess Luna's room had become, with paper and pencils scattered all over the floor. There were a lot of brand new pencils that had been sharpened once, but were dull and discarded across the room.
“Why do you need so many pencils, Luna?” Celestia asked, kicking a few and watching them roll around.
“Because,” Luna rolled her eyes, “I can only draw with sharp pencils, when they get dull I need a new one.”
“Why not just sharpen the old one?” Celestia chuckled.
“Because then I would lose my place, and wouldn't be able to finish the picture.” Luna smiled. “Everypony knows that.”
“I'm sure they do.” Celestia nodded, stepping into the room, careful not to step onto the pictures or pencils. “But it's time to raise the sun, and for you to go to bed, Luna.”
“But, Celestia.” Luna moped, looking around at all of her work.
“Luna.” Celestia grinned, waving Luna towards the door.
“Okay.” Luna sighed, leaving her room.
As Luna walked by, Celestia used her magic to pick up all of the pictures and deposit them into one of Luna's boxes around the room, which was nearly overflowing with pictures and ideas as it were. Celestia and Luna switched the sun for the moon, and Celestia followed Luna back to her chamber.
“Celestia.” Luna yawned, crawling into bed. “I don't need you to tuck me in. I can get to bed on my own, you know.”
“I know.” Celestia smiled, blowing out the candles. “But what else is family for?”
“Good morning... Sister...” Luna lay her head on her pillow and fell asleep almost instantly.
Celestia closed the door and walked back to her room where she made sure nopony was looking before rummaging through a box. She pulled out a game system and 'Call of Pony' and got to work 'Pwning n00bs' as Luna would say.
