One year ago, Trent Phillip arrived in Equestria by circumstances no one understands, leaving him only with the clothes on his back. Unable to return home and having difficulty adjusting to the effects of culture shock, Trent suffers from depression at being unable to return to the life he knew. The residents of Ponyville treat him as a monster for his different looks and his only friends are the guard members he works with and Princess Twilight Sparkle, and most of them are also told to keep an eye on him to make sure he doesn't go out of control. Trent takes up the life of a guard to keep him busy, but he's never been able to shake the feelings of sadness and longing he has for his old life and friends despite them being permanently out of reach.

With the upcoming Equestria Games and the tryouts being held in the town of Rainbow Falls, Trent's captain assigns him and fellow guard member Garnet Heart to help guard the competitors from Ponyville, with the work doubling as a vacation in the relaxing resort town. Through the trials at the games and with the help of Twilight, Garnet, and the pegasus Silverspeed, one of the few ponies that isn't afraid of him, Trent might learn to adjust to life in Equestria, and also uncover a few secrets about his companions that will change the way he views his situation.
