A lost love, an Evil King

Many many moons ago in the land of Equestria lived a pony named Sombra. Many knew him for his evil deeds as the dark King Sombra, but there was a time before thus he was very pure of heart. King Sombra studied under the expert care of Princess Celestia many a moon ago, and became the shining example of her academy. One day while at the Summers Sun Celebration he met a very beautiful mare who had no stallion to call her own. Sombra felt his heart stop that day when he laid eyes on her beauty. He couldn't even begin to fathom her beauty in his mind.

Her mane shimmered just like silk, her body like freshly carved diamonds, her graceful trot looked so tempting to the eye, and her eyes themselves felt like swimming pools of sweet relief! Sombra thought to himself long and hard for a few moments, and then decided he would go talk to her. Sombra gathered his courage and approached her slowly and softly said "What a beautiful night to see you shine in the morning light." She giggled and looked at Sombra "My my" she said "Nopony has ever come up to me and talked about me in such a way before. My name is Sapphire, and you are young sir?" "Um..I erm uh... I am Sombra" He replied scrapping at the ground lightly with his hooves in embarrassment.

The two locked eyes and watched the Summer Sun rise together, talked a lot more after that, and even began to plan out another time to see each other. They soon fell in love and began to live just outside the city limits of Canterlot together. Soon after they moved in together, Sombra and Sapphire said I do and got married to each other. Many more moons passed on as Sombra and Sapphire grew happy together, that was until one fateful night.
The Changling Queen, Chrysalis was looking down at the outer limits of Equestria and saw Sapphire's life force pleasing to the eye. She sent her minions to draw Sombra away from his new wife Sapphire, and to make sure Chrysalis would have time alone with her. As some Changelings rolled up and threw a stone at their house, Sombra came out and charged after them with a fierce stride of speed. When Sombra was too far away for him to save her, Chrysalis snuck in and attacked Sapphire by surprise. Sapphire instantly fell ill from the attack, and Chrysalis fled with great haste to avoid coming into contact with Sombra.

Somba rushed back home to Sapphire thinking he kept her safe, only to find her weakened body hanging on by mere threads of life. He rushed her to Canterlot city to Princess Celestia's chambers to see if she could keep Sapphire from passing on. Princess Celestia shook her hand in disbelief that Sapphire fell this ill from a single strike. She knew that the only way for Sombra to save her was the rarest flower put into drops of pure love and purity itself, Crystal Drops from a Crystal Flower!
Sombra made haste to the outer limits of Equestria'a mountains into the snowy lands. He knew if he were to find the drops his love would be saved. He ran, and ran, and ran for days all around the snowy mountains. To no avail of his did he find the drops. Then just as he was about to give up Queen Chrysalis in the form of a wanderer appeared and spoke to him "Drops of purity doth thou seek, greedy people must you stamp beneath. If you wish to save her in time, do this quickly and on the dime."

Sombra roared so loud an avalanche occurred, scaring the Queen away. Chrysalis knew she had Sombra in her hooves, and was only moments away from tricking him. After this Sombra took off in a hurry towards a cave that opened after his massive roar shook the mountain lands. Slowly he entered the cave and began to poke around softly. He knew inside was a trap, but he knew if anything would house a Sacred Flower twas here. As Sombra got deeper into the cave, he had to start using some light magic to see his way around. He stumbled and tripped himself through many a fake floor and walls. When he finally saw an ancient text on the wall he looked lost, but Sombra heard voices in his head speaking the text. "Thou art very noble for coming into thine own death trap! Thou seekest thy most Sacred of relics, yet ye verily knowest the scope of thy own dangers to face. Thy best interest is to retreat with thine own soul intact!"

Sombra remained unmoved and continued down the hallway to a pillar with a bottle on it. His search was over, and he had found the item he sought. As Sombra drew closer, he noticed more writing on the pillar reading; "If pure the intent the cure you will have, if greed drives you here then cursed is you!" Sombra emptied his mind, and his heart of all things that didn't relate to Sapphire.
As he drew closer and closer the bottle shined brighter and brighter. Just before Sombra could touch the bottle Queen Chrysalis entered the room and blasted Sombra in the backside with a magic spell, but she didn't know he was thrown into the bottle. Catching the bottle and fleeing, Sombra knew he was doing what was right. He made haste to make it back to his lover because her life was slowly dispersing.

As soon as Sombra arrived with the bottle, he looked at it and was filled with joy! The flower which was said to be long lost was indeed in pure drop form! Sombra found the Crystal Drops and was going to save his lover's life from the curse of Chrysalis. Yet as soon as Sombra came into her chamber, Princess Celestia shook her head low and said "The hour is close, I fear it may not work. Go in and say anything you have to say my student." Sombra slowly walked into the chamber of resting where Sapphire was and opened the bottle. He poured a little down her throat and the rest over her body like the rumors said it was used. Sapphire looked deep into Sombra's eyes, and after kissing him said "I am sorry my love, but not even this will save me from the curse...I want you to know I always loved you no matter wha...." At that moment Sapphire breathed her last and gave up her spirit.

Sombra, so lost for words and reaction wept aloud for three days. He rarely ate or drank anything while he mourned for the loss of his beloved. Sombra knew he had only one thing to do with Sapphire's passing. He buried her in the castle courtyard, and then bowed to Princess Celestia saying "I must leave on a personal journey. I fear my may not return so take care my teacher. Twill not meet again." After passing those words Sombra fled as fast and as far as he could. Sombra fled as far as the Snowy Mountains of Equestria. When he got there he found an old research tower, which was not opened for many a years. Upon entering the tower, Sombra felt a very deep presence and felt at home. There he began searching for an answer to how to fight Chrysalis; Queen of the Changelings.

His answers led to very terrifying discovery in the dark magics. Becoming one with Darkness, Sombra unleashed a torrent of power one day by mistake. The torrent poured forth a power so fierce that Sombra used his own body to trap it. Slowly over time the torrent took over his body and began to change his appearance. Years and years went by as Sombra's studies led to more terrifying leaps and bounds. Soon he became so powerful he desired to test his powers out. Near by in the mountain ranges about three-hundred thousand yards was the city of the Crystal Empire. Sombra rushed the city at nightfall, and over through the city within mere hours. After taking over Sombra found out about the Crystal Heart, and took it for himself. Before his fall from power he cursed the Crystal Ponies of the Empire so they wouldn't remember anything before or after his reign, and where the Crystal Heart was hidden.

After his fall from power, Sombra spent many a years regrowing his powers by becoming "The Dark Cloud" that stalked the Empire from afar. When Twilight Sparkle and her friends came to save the Empire, Sombra fought and lost again without much choice he hid again in the Darkness. To this day Sombra mourns and fights his own soul because of the darkness he fell into. If only he was shown how to love again after the fall of his beloved Sapphire he wouldn't have become the Evil King Sombra. Maybe once the time is right someone will seek out Sombra, and love him the way he needs to be loved. Maybe then, even after all has happened the way it did; will Sombra gain true peace.
