It came to me on a warm Saturday. It was a distinctive Saturday, the day when the games inspector was arriving in the Crystal Empire. Despite being a small city state that we Equestrians recently freed, it became notable enough to be considered for the National Equestrian games. It was mainly out of sympathy to what the ‘empire’ had endured, but it was also quite a beautiful place, and the influx of visitors could help launch their economy.
I mostly spent my time that day training the city’s athletes, and occasionally talking to my sister or a friend. My sister and her friends had been put in charge of welcoming the games inspector. Long story short, they welcomed the wrong pony, though we were somehow still the ones to host the games.
It was on that day that something inexplicable began to well up inside me. My wife had been… out a lot. She was an elegant, pink, perfectly amiable young mare. I loved her since I was a young colt running about the training grounds of Canterlot academy. But the sense of loneliness I would feel when she wasn’t there… It was peculiar to me.
I’m a strong pony; I am a captain of the royal guard after all. It was only a few weeks ago that I learned a new captain was being picked for the Canterlot guard and I would soon be given a long time position in training and leading the new Crystal Imperial guards. I didn’t quite know how to feel about this. At first I thought I would get to see my wife more, but realizing her schedule, she wouldn’t be there most of the time.
So here I am now, on a train making my way towards my new job. Even the beautiful crystal lights in the distance do not give me hope. As of lately my dreariness has gotten worse, I should be happy that I at least have her, but I can’t seem to find full satisfaction in myself. Maybe it’s all sub-conscious. Maybe I knew it all along. I suppose I should go back to that warm Saturday.
My wife had just finished announcing the good news to the crystal citizens. My sister was trotting back to the train station; among her were her group of five friends she had made back in Ponyville. I met all these ponies at my wedding. I was happy at my sister’s friendship, they were all good ponies.
On that particular day though, I saw a cerulean mare flying above the group. I had seen her before; she created a magnificent rainboom at the wedding, out of all my sisters friends though, I had yet to truly meet her. She had said not a single word to me, barely a glance, and me barely a glance at her.
I didn’t know why but at that moment, seeing the moderate cerise in her eyes, the red, vermillion, violet, gold, green and blue of her mane, the superb athletic tone of her body, and the expression of resolve and glee on her face, I could only be lost of thoughts.
They were walking at a distance, I decided not to approach. I only looked. None seemed to have noticed me; it would have been awkward had they came towards me. I stared until they were out of sight.
Realizing my priorities at the track I began to trot back to the city. My mind and body reacted in… strange ways. My head felt deflated, and soon it was as if I wasn’t touching the ground at all. I couldn’t help but give a tentative smile as I finally realized what had just happened.
It faded as I thought about my wife though.

Hearing the train reel to a stop, Shining dropped his pen and closed the journal. He sighed briefly before gathering his supplies and placing them in his many luggage bags. As he stepped off the train he noticed it was the early evening outside and the temperature was below average, almost cold enough to the point where he could see his breath. An array of emotions had swept him the previous few hours; he couldn’t help but write down some troubling thoughts. As ashamed as he was, he felt somewhat elated at his new feelings; he was thirsting for two now after all.
The guards had immediately recognized him and allowed him into the crystal palace. Despite having seen it numerous times, he couldn’t help but awe at the mass crystal structures. They gleamed a sunset orange in the late sky along with the sparkling nature of the crystals.

It was the same room he and his wife resided in their first stay at the Crystal Empire. The room was brightly decorated with Cadence’s favorite colors and designs, most of which were meant to inspire romantic feelings, and succeeded. To the left of the room was a balcony that overlooked the entire southern side of the empire.
Shining took notice of the open balcony and the particularly cold breeze that swept through. The orange sunset gave faint light to the room.
“Could you close that honey?”
“Sure,” said Shining. He stopped his unpacking and approached the balcony, before closing the doors though; he took to staring at the reflective empire while bathing in the sunset glow. He could just barely see moving dots in the distance, despite the evening hour the city would bustle well into the night.
“It is a particularly beautiful view isn’t it?”
Shining turned and noticed Cadence laying sideways holding an expression of calmness that made Shining grin.
“I always gaze out of there during the sunset; it’s a good thing to remember before going to sleep.”
Shining paused for a moment and stared at the floor. Now were the moments of peace, the moments he could spend with her and not get entangled in his own pathetic emotions.
“Yes… I suppose it is.”

“Good morning dear,” he said, “I hope I didn’t wake you up too soon.”
Cadence gave a slight snicker, “No that’s quite fine, I have to get ready for the summit anyways.”
Cadence climbed out of bed and stretched herself around. The two proceeded to go through their typical routines, brushing together, washing together, grooming together and dressing together, then giving each other a quick kiss before dispersing for the business of the day.
Nothing particular happened in the morning, or since he had arrived a few months ago. Shining checked up on his usual positions and gave some of the guards their briefing. He had found that training and maintaining the new Imperial Guards were not that much different from his original Canterlot position, no administrative paperwork like in his return, and a decent amount of physical action. Despite its position in Equestria and recent events surrounding it, it seemed surprisingly less crime ridden than Canterlot, so only very seldom were there any spectacular chases or seizures. He found himself somewhat content with this.
Most of the commotion that day was about the upcoming Princess summit; the crystal citizens were honored to have such an important event at their newly liberated and refined city. Whether or not anything of true importance had ever gone on at the summit was up to debate.
Early afternoon he had got notice to keep “highly elevated” guard now that the princesses had arrived. The administration back at Canterlot had apparently sent in a few of their own Royal Guards in case the city wasn’t secure enough for the event, something which many imperial guards took offense to. Shining, despite being the trainer and overseer of the city’s security, minded little, perhaps the new guards would take a load off him allowing him to see his sister, or even wife more than once. The lieutenant gave a slight snort before Shining dismissed him into his formation. He had walked the halls for the last half hour, not knowing how long the summit had gone on yet, or what may be transpiring, only caring when it ended. He had waited months now; he had not seen his sister or any of her friends since the winter. It would be a long awaited moment when he could share with her all the accounts and disclosures of the last few months.
“Okay now it's my turn to serve.”

“Dash, you served last turn!”

Soon the time came, no one had told him of his sister’s full moon deadline, but when he arrived back at the castle one night, he found his sister safe, as well as all her friends around her. It was a simple sentence, yet it puzzled Shining at first, he heard the words but had not registered them in his mind. Just as Dash’s
expression changed to one of confusion, Shining mustered in himself the best response he could.

he saw her confusion change almost to aversion.

“Oh, sorry,” he said moving out of the way.
“Thanks, that’s alright.”
