On the night of the Winter Solstice
Canterlot seemed to shine with a light all its own, despite the wan sunlight of the cold, grey Winter Solstice. As was customary on the shortest day of the year, Princess Celestia, ruler of Equestria, had held a limited court. It was half past two in the afternoon; court had dismissed at noon, but Celestia, her top aide, and a small contingent of guards remained in the throne room. There was a palpable tension in the air among the Royal Guards; more than a few times, the Guard Captain, Shining Armor, had needed to pierce one of his men with a stern, forbidding glare to still their nerves.
Celestia rolled up and sealed a scroll she had been writing on for the past half hour, then turned to Shining Armor. "Captain, a word in private?"
"Of course, Your Highness."
Celestia rose gracefully from her throne and led Shining Armor into the small private receiving room where she often retreated during court to take a brief lunch or to weigh matters that were best considered without the press of courtiers around her.
Once the magically-soundproofed door closed behind them, she turned to face him. "About this evening's Winter Solstice Ceremony..." Celestia began.

Celestia laughed her gentle, musical laugh. "My dear Shining Armor, you have never failed to perform above and beyond my expectations in anything. And certainly, my niece would not object." She frowned prettily, turning to look at the large, ornate golden ornament on the wall, wrought in the shape of a blazing sun. "No, there is...another reason."
Shining Armor waited patiently. When Celestia did not speak, he prompted, "And...that would be? If I may ask?"
Celestia sighed and turned to face him. "I have invited your sister to participate in the ceremony."
Shining Armor's eyes widened. "WHAT?!" he cried.
"She is old enough now," Celestia said. "And mature enough to understand. Mature enough...to learn what transpires on the night when I have no power."
Shining Armor's face had turned a sickly shade of green. "Your Highness...does Twilight know what the ceremony entails?"
"No, she doesn't," Celestia admitted. "I was afraid if I told her...she wouldn't come."
Shining grimaced. "You realize what you're saying. And who you're saying it to."
"Yes," Celestia said sadly. "I...am worried about how she will react, but...if I didn't believe her capable of handling the ceremony, I would never have invited her." She looked up at Shining Armor imploringly. "Please...allow me this."
Shining sighed and shook his head. "If...if Twilight is to participate in the ceremony..." He looked down, cobalt bangs obscuring his eyes. "Then I must attend."
"Shining Armor, no..." Celestia said, pain in her voice. "I would never wish for you to stand and watch while—"
"Princess," Shining Armor interrupted, "if Twilight is to learn of what transpires on the Winter Solstice...if she is to witness her mentor and personal hero at her weakest..." He swallowed. "Then she needs to know what role I play in...what happens."
Celestia raised a slender eyebrow. "I wonder if, perhaps, there is an ulterior motive at play here," she said. "Perhaps...a secret desire in your heart?"
Shining frowned at her. "Your Highness...I will not dignify that with an answer." With that, he saluted and marched briskly from the room. Celestia smiled at his retreating back, eyes gleaming with mirth.

Twilight Sparkle considered herself the most fortunate young woman in Equestria.
When she was only a little girl, she had stood before a panel of mages—the selection board for admission to the Royal Academy of Magic—and unleashed a surge of raw magical power that had birthed her familiar and lifelong companion, the dragon hatchling she named Spike. Now, at the age of nineteen, Twilight Sparkle was one of the most powerful mages alive, as well as one of the most noted researchers into Equestrian history and magical lore. She was also woefully socially inept, having never bothered to make a single friend while growing up, let alone concern herself with dating and crushes like most young women her age were wont to do. This particular lapse didn't really bother her, as all she truly cared for were her studies, the few people (and dragons) that were closest to her, and most important of all, her relentless pursuit of acknowledgement from her beloved mentor.
She had just received one of the greatest, most precious acknowledgements Celestia could bestow upon her:
Princess Celestia wanted her to participate in the Winter Solstice Ceremony, the most elusive of all events ever to take place within the walls of Canterlot Palace. A ceremony so shrouded in mystery that few even knew of its existence, and fewer still knew what it entailed.
For many years, Twilight had tried to learn the secrets of the Winter Solstice Ceremony. For all her efforts, she remained as clueless as she had been the first time she had asked Celestia about it. She had been nine at the time. The previous year, on the Solstice, she had received no lessons from Celestia. Only a reading assignment, and explicit instructions to stay away from the Royal Wing. On the day before the Solstice, Celestia had once again informed her that she would be unavailable the following day, and had left the same instructions as before...

Although I presently command both the sun and the moon..." She grimaced. "By right, I am the ruler of the day and herald of the sun. When the sun sets on the Winter Solstice...well, for the duration of the longest night of the year, I lose all of my powers."
Twilight gasped. "You lose your powers?"
"That's right," Celestia said. "As soon as the sun sets, I become powerless, helpless until the dawn." She smiled. "That's why the moon has not risen on the Winter Solstice in a thousand years. Once I lower the sun, I do not have the power to raise the moon."
"Oh," Twilight said. "Then the Winter Solstice Ceremony...is it some ritual to restore your powers?"
Celestia seemed taken aback. "How did you learn of the Solstice Ceremony?!" she demanded sharply.
Twilight jumped away in fright. "It's just...a rumor I heard," she said. "That there's some kind of ceremony on the Winter Solstice. But nobody seems to know anything about it."
Celestia let out a long, slow breath. "You must promise me, my student, to never ask about the Winter Solstice Ceremony ever again. It is...a very private thing. Something I do not share with anyone. You will not find one person in Canterlot who can tell you what happens on that night. I assure you of that."
"Oh," Twilight said, frowning. "Alright, Princess. But...IS it a ritual to restore your powers?"
Celestia laughed her beautiful, musical laugh and shook her head. "Oh, Twilight..." She sighed. "My powers return on their own when the time to raise the sun arrives. The Winter Solstice Ceremony...serves a completely different purpose." She gave Twilight a stern look. "And that is my final word on the matter. We will never speak of this again, is that clear?"

And so it was. Twilight never broached the subject with her teacher again. She did, however, spend much of her adolescence trying to unravel the mystery and secrecy surrounding that one night every year when the Royal Wing was sealed and the Palace utterly deserted. Despite all her best efforts, she had never uncovered the truth behind the Winter Solstice Ceremony.
Then, to her immense surprise, Celestia had approached her that morning, somewhat furtive and agitated.
"Twilight," she had said, "as you know, tonight is the Winter Solstice. As usual, I will be sequestered within the Royal Wing, and the Palace will be largely vacant."
"The Solstice Ceremony," Twilight had said, nodding. "You don't need to remind me, Princess."
Celestia's eyes had darted left and right, before she leaned in closer. "Twilight...I want you at my side tonight."
Twilight had gasped in shock. "You what?"
Celestia had smiled at her. "My faithful student...it has been centuries since I have known someone I cared for and trusted as much as you. And..." She had sighed. "I know that you are now mature enough, and strong enough, to know the truth. To know what happens on the one night each year when I am powerless." She had looked into Twilight's eyes. "I need you to see me at my weakest, Twilight."
"Princess Celestia...I don't know what to say..."
"Just...come to my chambers tonight at sunset," Celestia had said. "I have adjusted the wards to allow you to pass. Wear a nice dress. Something semi-formal."

A touch of blush, a hint of eyeshadow, and a faint sheen of lavender lip gloss had been applied as finishing touches.
"Looking good, Twilight," Spike said from where he sat on her bed reading a comic book.
"Thank you, Spike," she said. She studied her razor-straight violet bangs with a pensive frown, tilting her head to allow her long, straight hair to swing back and forth behind her. "Should I do something different with my hair?"
"Nah, your hair's perfect the way it is," Spike said. He looked at the clock. "You'd better get going, it's almost sunset."
"Oh! Right," Twilight said. "Don't stay up past your bedtime!"

Twilight took one last look at herself, then left her tower suite.

True to Celestia's word, Twilight passed through the wards without incident. She quickly found herself at the ornate brass door to the Princess' private chambers. She had visited Celestia in her chambers many times, of course, but somehow, this visit seemed more...significant. Ominous, even. "As do you, Princess," Twilight said. "I don't believe I've ever seen you wear black before."
"It isn't really my color," Celestia said, "but I like to wear something different on special occasions."
"I think it looks good on you," Twilight said.
Celestia motioned to a bottle of wine and two glasses sitting on a small glass table in front of her. "Please, have a glass of wine with me."
Twilight walked over, poured two glasses of wine, handed one to her teacher, and sat down on the divan beside her. They clinked their glasses and drank. Twilight nodded appreciatively. "So..." she said. "What exactly are you going to be doing tonight?"
"Yes, about that," Celestia said. She picked up a small crystal bell from another glass table and rang it.
All around them, the doors to the other rooms that made up the Royal Chambers opened. Twilight looked around in confusion as two dozen men entered the room. Celestia's face took on a faraway, almost sad look. "Right...the next Solstice."
"Is something wrong, Princess?"
Celestia shook herself. "Oh...nothing, Twilight." She smiled. "You have a good day. And congratulations on getting together with Emerald Blade." She hugged Twilight, then turned and left.
Outside, Celestia looked up through the stained glass skylight, seeing beyond the sky, beyond the stars. Seeing the moon, cold and lonely, a dark spread of shadows across its circumference forming the face of a screaming woman. She shivered.
