Killing Luck -Chapter 2

The knock on the door barely woke Twilight up, but if it hadn’t the cry would have. She hadn’t even reached for the door when it started. It was a foal, no doubt, and it needed her.

She stood still a moment longer. The last moment before she became a mother – no, a sister – was one she wanted to treasure. She smiled. She wasn’t happy, merely imagining the relationship this opportunity gave her. Young sisters couldn’t be that bad, could they? After all, both Applejack and Rarity loved their siblings, even though they were related to them as much as Twilight herself was to the foal on the other side of the door.

The door opened. The sunlight swept the book on the shelves. Outside stood a basket – its content covered by a pure white cloth – identical to those one saw in movies. And just like in a dream, once the cloth was removed the cry ceased and the foal smiled. Nightfall had the perfection that every baby foal had, with her purple coat and white mane. Apart from the coat she didn’t resemble her older sister, but there was nothing to be done about that.

Their first day had gone perfectly. The two unicorns had such a bond that one would never suspect that they weren’t mother or daughter – or in this case – sisters. Spike helped, of course. The foal was two years old, so it could already walk, but it didn’t speak as of yet. A party was thrown, of course. What could one do but celebrate the birth of another perfect family, in the perfect world of Equestria, where the families had bonds no blood relationship could ever hope to match?

Spike was out for the night. Twilight and Nightfall were having fun on the well-lit library. A book with pictures lay on the ground, open. It was a book about a princess and a valiant prince. Twilight read aloud softly while at the same time using her magic to make the images move. Nightfall was completely enchanted by the moving pictures, giggling heartedly. Alas, perfect nights must end. Twilight placed Nightfall on her toy-filled crib, wishing her sweet dreams. There was a knock on the door.

Once she opened the door a stallion knocked her, immobilizing her on the ground. He levitated a blade dangerously close to her neck. Before her head was covered by a black bag she saw his red coat and white mane.

“Where is she? Where is White Lotus, you filth?”

Twilight gasped for air, but the dark bag prevented her. No, it couldn’t end like this.

A heavy object hit her on the back of the head, knocking her down. The stranger picked up Nightfall and galloped away from the library into the moonless night.

Twilight woke up an hour later, still with the bag over her head. She managed to rip it apart with magic. Looking around she could see that everything had been left intact. Nothing had been taken. Then it hit her. The stallion had called the filly White Lotus. He was her genetic father. She was with her true family now.

She laughed maniacally for a few seconds. It was over, she knew it. She didn’t have to be a sister or a mother anymore and Celestia couldn’t blame her for what happened. Finding the stallion was out of the question. She had barely seen him. Everything would go back to normal from now on.

“Buck!” Twilight exclaimed after not being able to sleep even though she had laid down two hours ago. Nightfall’s laughter didn’t let her sleep. She could still hear it, like some mad pony. She missed her, even though their time together had been short-lived.

She stood up, left a note and headed out. She had no idea where to begin looking so she just stood there, crying. She would never see Nightfall again. The worst part was, for a moment, she was relieved. She had to contact the princess, but Spike wasn’t there.

She went back inside. Levitating a scroll and a quill with her magic, she wrote:

“Dear Princess Celestia,

The foal under my care has been taken from me, apparently by her true father. In spite of being devastated, I know how her father must have felt when she was taken away. I deem his recent actions as proof that he is worthy of caring for Nightfall, or White Lotus as he called her, and I ask you to not look for them. It’s true that I loved her like a sister but her dad loves her too and nopony should have set them apart.”

She went to bed, tired and desolated, but satisfied with her decision. After all, White Lotus deserved a true father.”

Author’s note: I apologize. Not only for not updating for so long but also because I feel I let my readers down. I could make an excuse for why I haven’t updated in months. I could say I had classes and writers block (they are both true) but it wasn’t all.

The truth is I lost my confidence after my first story “Alone, not Lonely” wasn’t accepted on Equestria Daily. I still feel that Killing Luck deserves a better writer. The other reason is I honestly didn’t know how to end it. In my early drafts Nightfall died, so you can see how different it was from the final chapter.

Finally, thank you for reading. I liked the original idea and wouldn’t mind at all if anyone wrote a fanfic based on this idea.
