In the year Anno Reunisus 10, a great pegasus scientist by the name of Alvion discovered a new source of energy that all ponies could utilise. It was called electricity. Unbeknownst at the time, what he discovered would fuel the beginning of the Great Equestrian Industrial Revolution. Many inventions made by him and other scientists would be used to greatly improve the life of ponies and others across the world. However, as time went on, many things were made for the purpose of harming as wars demanded them. Sometimes these discoveries were accidental and weren't intended to harm anyone. Other times, they were intentional; however, all of these discoveries paled in comparison to one, the atom. Originally used to predict the properties of chemicals being synthisised to do productive non-harmful tasks, they were later used to synthisise poisonous materials. However, even these paled in comparison to one discovery, radiation. Discovered in A.R. 66 by Curly Mane, it was initially seen of having little use. However, in A.R. 112, during an intense war between Equestria, Britain, Nippony, Trotskya, and Germaney, a top secret project dubbed the Manehattan Project sought to utilise the unstable and harmful nature of radioactive elements to create an extremely powerful weapon. The project was a success and in A.R. 115, after the surrender of Germaney, two atomic bombs were dropped on the Nipponiese cities of Heiroshima and Neigasaki resulting in the deaths of 150,000-246,000 ponies. Nippony was given no choice but to surrender. Celestia and Luna hoped that the weapons would never be used again; however, little did they know that there were spies working for both the Zebras and Trotskya involved in the Manehattan Project. These spies would result in the proliferation of these weapons of mass destruction.

Soon after the war with Nippony and Germaney, Equestria found itself in an ever escalating conflict with Trotskya and the Zebras. The Zebras over precious resources in their homeland. And Trotskya for political and economic disagreements and  clashing spheres of influence. A great war began in A.R. 120 causing the rapid evolution of military and war related technologies to futuristic levels. Robotic troops were developed, power armour was created giving ponies vastly improved protection, and even energy weapons were developed. Supercomputers were created to control vast amounts of robots, mechanised troops, and sophisticated nuclear weapons. However, whilst military and war technology evolved rapidly, consumer technology developed at a much slower pace. By A.R. 150, colour computer monitors, CDs, computers with 64 kB of RAM, and digital FM synthesisers were just reaching the consumer market.

For the first twelve years of the war, Equestria's enemies seemed to be winning as they had a burgeoning amount of troops and were conquering land left and right. However, with several technological advancements, Equestria and its allies began to even the playing field. By A.R. 135, Equestria definitely had an advantage with technological superiority and by A.R. 140 had regained all of their lost territory and were beginning to conquer more. However, after A.R. 145, the war had escalated into a stalemate as Trotskya, the Zebras, and their allies had developed their technology to the point that it rivalled Equestria and its allies.

However, all conflicts must come to an end. In A.R. 150, seeing nothing to gain or lose, a nation launched a nuclear weapon which caused global retaliation. In less than two hours, the world was reduced to a wasteland, billions died, and all governments collapsed into anarchy.

Before the end however, many countries began building underground Stables to protect their citizens from the radiation of nuclear weapons. Equestria alone had over 1000 of these Stables by the time the bombs fell. From these stables emerged  new generations of ponies, zebras, griffons etc. which would have to re-establish their presence in the world. Most were good; however, in the stages of anarchy, evil dominated and plunged the world into a violent, corrupt, and evil place. After 212 years of anarchy, most believe that it will never end. However, an ancient prophecy says otherwise.
