Cheese Sandwich always loved it when a party came together right. Not that it really took too much. Equestria was naturally a happy place. It served a practical purpose as well. They neighbors had been getting along well enough. They liked one another, they were civil. But they never really got down and boogied together. They tended to keep their cultures very distinct and the celebrations were observed by one side or the other as interesting cultural happenings rather than as things in which to participate.
That was the magic of a good party. And that was Cheese's specialty. The buffalo and ponies were partying down, the happiness off the area was high and all was well. Except...
Except there was one little wrinkle. One of the folks wasn't partying. She was, in fact, following him. It was a buffalo, one of the cows. He remembered her name was Little Strongheart, the daughter of Chief Thunderhooves. She had looked on him kindly when he first came into town, remained unobtrusively nearby, and helped to get the buffalo to the party. Once the festivities began, however, she had focused herself on him.
She wasn't trying to be completely invisible. She was giving him very friendly looks, and smiling, but maintaining a discreet distance. She seemed to want to come closer, but couldn't bring herself to bridge the gap. Her look was familiar. A mare or two had looked at Cheese like that before.
There were a lot of complications to the matter. Becoming entangled with someone in the places he threw parties was never in the cards. It would only create a mess when he had to wander off. Worse still, she was the daughter of an important person. That would be more stress. Finally, she was a buffalo. Her species wasn't the issue, her culture was. He didn't know what kind of traditions or rituals were involved in such a relationship. He could offend her just by trying to be polite.
During the period of Cheese's consideration and self-doubt Little Strongheart had conquered her own hesitation and sidled herself up to Cheese's side. I want to thank you once more for helping to bring such a joyous celebration to our town and getting ponies and buffalo to have fun, together.”
“Ah, it's what I do, Miss Strongheart. I'm the wandering party pony of Equestria. And please, call me Cheese!” He said, throwing on as bright a tone as he could muster. He was just glad they were both tucked away behind a building, far from the gathered party folks.

Little Strongheart led Cheese out onto the plain, just outside of Appleoosa proper. The lights from the party were still very evident, as were the drifting strains of the jubilant music. But there was a muting of both, with the bright moon providing a good bit of the light they had, while the drifting wind and sounds of animals added a bit of natural music to the surroundings.
Cheese nodded slowly as he looked around. “This is ni-” His comment was cut off by the sudden presence of Little Strongheart's lips. As the sun set the party was sustaining itself under the direction of the buffalo and the Appleoosans.

Responding to the cue there was a minor barking commotion from the other side of the door, which opened up firmly and revealed the original trio of Diamond Dogs, as well as three Dig Dogs. The three lead Dogs were not in their usual attire, but were rather dressed in scale mail shirts and loincloths, dull iron scales on rough-made heavy cloth. Likewise the Dig Dogs were in more ancient-designed iron armor, including vambraces and greaves, and faulds with a generous bulge in the metal front.
“Here is Pony Princess, the one we need. Take her Dogs!” Rover barked out, pointing at Rarity who looked shocked, in an over-acting sort of way.
“What is this? Diamond Dog barbarians? In my palace? Guards! Come to your princess! Preserve me!” Rarity squealed out, her tone dropping a bit as the initial cries created too many high pitches that made the six Dogs wince. She staggered away from her mirror, and looked on the Dogs with a mix of fear and appreciation.
Fido lumbered forward at the head of the three Dig Dogs, all four holding pristine white silk ropes. “Pony should be quiet. Not make fuss,” Fido wurfed deeply. He lunged forward for Rarity.
Rarity deftly fell back, partly as a dodging motion, party to throw herself dramatically onto her fainting couch. “Spare me! Oh muscular, rough, mighty, powerful, well-attired barbarian Dogs please spare my tender body and leave me in this dull palace height among my sniveling servants! Please don't take me away from this confining place! Please spare me your great strength and ruggedly handsome features! Do not take me!”
“We do not listen to ponies! We take you now,” Fido growled, lunging again. This time he succeeded in getting the rope around Rarity's forelegs. He wound it carefully around them while she held still, adjusting position a few times to make sure it was secure and not uncomfortable.
The Dig Dogs came forward as well, tying Rarity's rear legs and then all four of her legs together. Rover nodded and motioned to his coterie. “Come, Dogs! Back to tunnels with prize, before pony guards come to stop us.”
The assembly lumbered down the stairs and into the main room of Carousel Boutique, which still looked exactly the same. Sweetie Belle was on the couch, reading a magazine, when the parade of Dogs came through, clanking and thumping and making a lot of noise. “Hey! I'm trying to read here. Can't you be quiet?” She squeaked out.
The collection halted, the Dogs looking a little bit guilty about the whole thing. “I'm terribly sorry, Sweetie. Scale and plate are a bit cacophonous, but they look nice. Do your homework, there's cake in the refrigerator and mother and father will be here for you in the evening,” Rarity said. “Very well, continue, more quietly.”
“Thanks, sis!” Sweetie called, going back to her magazine as the group of Dogs continued on through the boutique, slowly and with much less clattering. She could only sigh. Rarity was a great sister but she played weird games with her friends.
The parade of Dogs traveled into the basement of the shop, which looked just like any other room, with bright lights, cheerful paint on the walls, and dress forms sitting around in half-finished attire. A door on the far side led down into what would normally be a sub-basement but which was, in fact, a passage to the Diamond Dog tunnels that ran under Ponyville. Or rather, to a private section of tunnels that were like a subterranean condo, unconnected to the tunnel system proper.
The large, main congregation area had been constructed, from the start, to recall a medieval hall, including having a large hearth, arched ceilings, rough wooden furnishings covered in simple raw cloth, and a large, raised area with a trio of comfortable throne-like chairs marked with the names 'Rover', 'Fido' and 'Spot' in the Diamond Dog alphabet.
Rarity was carefully deposited onto a large, plush pillow made of red velvet, and her bonds were quickly removed, allowing her to shake out her limbs and give them a soft rubbing. After she had worked over her legs and settled back on the pillow she affected a look of fearful uncertainty. “No! My worst fear! No more making faces when Dogs eat meat. No cheating Dogs on gem weight and quality. We know gem weight and quality.”
“And how will having me make the citizens less prone to being unkind? I cannot control them, and surely they will simply launch attacks to get me back. Your plan will never succeed,” Rarity insisted, sitting proudly on the pillow and bouncing her mane.
“Not worry, have clever plan,” Rover said, tapping his head softly. “Ponies will listen to royal family. Even if they not want to, they must.”
“Well, that is true. But I will not make the proclamations, unless you ask me very politely. Still, they may not be fully convinced. Your clever plan lacks some steps,” Rarity said with a shake of her head.
“Will listen to us, if we are royal family,” Rover said. He gave a particular tone of howl and ended with a loud bark. I was made by ponykind...”

“It was years ago,” the creature said, standing tall and staring straight ahead. “A unicorn mage wished for a living heater for his various potions, able to think and control temperature properly. “Why aren't you still there?” She asked.
“The old mage had many skills, spells and potions... but none to live forever,” the coal creature said succinctly.

“He was my creator, but I did not respect him because of it. I respected him because he made me with a name. He called me Kohler,” Kohler said.
“Kohler... that's a nice name,” Cosette said. She had no idea what to say or do. “Why are you here, then? Why aren't you still there where he was?”
