Chapter 1
A Shadow Returns
It has been a year since the defeat of King Sombra at the Crystal Empire; many believed he was vanquished believing that the Crystal Empire was safe once more. However, the king of shadows could never truly be defeated, only delayed.
Deep within the northern snowy wastelands, a mysterious mare was carrying a sled of spells and potions to the top of the hill. Her mane was dark green and her fur was dark grey, she had a cutie mark of a stallion’s skull covered in mist. She was a necromancer a conjuror of dark magic, little was known of her cult only that they were once followers of King Sombra.
The necromancer started to place death stones in a circle on the top of the hill, as she placed each one of the stones she chanted an ancient spell that would unite the powers of the death stones to create a portal to the condemned souls. When she finished chanting a stallion necromancer joined her, they did not speak only made eye contact knowing what must be done.
Both necromancers began mixing their sacrificial potions carefully and chanted a spell, before they knew it their potions turned dark green. The first to drink was the stallion then the mare, they immediately felt the effects of the potion making them dizzy, slowly they started moving towards the portal chanting the final spell to bring back their king before leaping into the portal.
Suddenly, the portal pulled both necromancers in and collapsed on itself before exploding into a black cloud of smoke that slowly faded away revealing a tall fierce looking unicorn.
There he was, standing in the middle of the death stones with his red cape flapping in the wind, armor shinning black, fangs as sharp as spears and his eyes glowing green with purple mist. The King of Shadows has returned to Equestria.
King Sombra breaths in the fresh air of the northern winter, he started looking around trying to find out where he was until he noticed the death stones. He remembered the power of these stones and he knew it would make him stronger if he absorbed them; he piled them up together and stomped them causing the ground to shake violently. However, Sombra stayed perfectly still as if it were wind blowing on him.
King Sombra felt more powerful than he ever did in his entire lifetime. He now possessed the power to create much more powerful spells, knowing nothing could compare to his power he knew he could conquer all that he wishes. Nevertheless, he had no time to waste if he wanted to take back what he once owned, he would not only reclaim the Crystal Empire but he would conquer the rest of Equestria as well.
First, he needed an army and a castle; he started his search in the nearest forest hoping to find an abandoned old fortress. Hours passed as his search continued, until he had stumbled into the ruins of the city of nightmares. King Sombra was immobile, the shock had taken him; this city was where it all began for him. He remembered his fillyhood in this ancient city that once shined gloriously across all of Equestria, everypony who lived under the rule of his parents worshiped them until she came into their lives.
King Sombra wished he could not remember the fires, the bodies on the streets, and how she did not hesitate in murdering his parents. That day his hatred grew beyond measure, he hated her and her army of changelings; he ran away promising himself he would destroy her no matter what it took. He hid in a cave avoiding the changeling patrols but when he was ready to start running again, the ground surrounding him collapsed into a deeper cave. That is where he found it the black soul crystal that is a power, which would never be destroyed. Sombra felt its power without even touching it, he wanted that power, he could imagine his sweet revenge.
Without hesitation, he touched the crystal not knowing what would happen. Suddenly the crystal lit up on fire hovering above the ground surprising Sombra making him trip and land on his back. Then the crystal charged towards Sombra and cut through his chest right into his heart. Sombra was in unimaginable pain while his heart had stopped. His chest was bleeding and he coughed out blood everywhere until he fainted.
When Sombra woke up, he had realized he was not in the cave anymore, but tied up in ropes by a changeling patrol. He felt different as if he was powerful as an Alicorn, he felt no more pain from the crystal, he had noticed his wounds were gone; his horn had turned red as the sun set and still had no cutie mark. He tried to move and loosen the ropes but he was quickly caught by one of the changelings. Just when they were about to punch him, Sombra suddenly exploded into a dark and thick black fog covering the changelings. When the fog cleared the changeling were crystallized, Sombra adored his new powers and embraced it.
Years had passed after that incident, years of solitude practicing with his new powers ever since that day. All this time he was alone, Sombra had searched the ruins of his city finding no survivors. When he entered the royal chamber, he witnessed nothing but ash even his parents bodies were disintegrated, no tears came from Sombra neither that day nor any other day.
With no hope of restoring the former glorious city, Sombra now searched across the plains of Equestria for a new city. Sombra had travelled form the northern plains moving south searching not knowing what he wanted yet, with his powers, he could do anything he wished but Sombra could not decide what he needed. Until he laid his eyes upon the crystal empire, Sombra knew he was destined to become its king and that nothing would stand in his way.
