Sometimes All You Need Is A Little Bad Luck
Fall of an empire, Rise of a spirit
Sombra sat on his throne room cursing the day. His forces stood no chance against the thing that sought to usurp his throne. His mind controlled slaves had the spell that manipulated them broken as soon as they went up against the alien. His last forces were the crystal constructs he had made standing in his throne room. They were bipedal crystal warriors he had made for the sole purpose of destruction. Right now four of them were staring down the door to his throne room. He knew this creature might get past them, but he had an ace up his sleeve. The time skip spell, he could use it to jump the city forward in time leaving his opponent to die in the past. He sat upon his throne confident in his impending victory.
Jinx watched as the latest group of slaves were released from their mind control. As soon as they were free they dropped whatever weapons they were holding and ran for their homes. Scared and confused Jinx couldn't blame them. They were being controlled by the bastard Sombra. That’s why she didn't kill them but instead used her magic to unravel the spell that held them. 'What bad luck for Sombra his spell broke so easily'. She smiled at that last thought. She had a unique way with luck. Her magic was not like most beings she had seen. Most creatures channeled their magic into the target of the spell. She channeled her magic around her target. The result was that her target suffered a dose of bad luck. How bad it was depended on how much oomph she put into it.
She stood in front of a massive pair of doors leading into the throne room. There were two ways into the room. She could open the door slowly and try to be suspenseful. Or she could blow them off their hinges. She giggled and proceeded to raise her right hand and let loose a blast of concussive violet energy. Basically raw power she used when she wasn't feeling creative.
Sombra watched as the doors to his throne room flew off their hinges and crushed two of the four guardians he had made. He gritted his teeth as the freak strode into his throne room with an air of arrogance hanging around her. This thing dared to challenge him. Him the lord of darkness. The one pony that even Luna and Celestia did not cross. Yet this purple garb wearing freak had the audacity to try and beat him. The two remaining guardians began to close in on the intruder. Before they could take a second step she snapped her fingers. The crystals shuddered while violet energy then toppled over crumbling into shards. Sombra was speechless. It took all his self control to not let his jaw hang open.
“You really had some bad luck today huh?” Jinx said conversationally. Sombra grinned, 'this little fool thinks its won eh'? He began to chuckle.
“Yes I do believe today had some bad luck. For you however not me.” He said with the utmost confidence. With these words he activated the time skip spell. Jinx frowned recognizing that a lot of magic energy was being channeled. 'What is he up to'? She raised her hand at Sombra and snapped her fingers. Nothing happened and Sombra smiled as energy swirled around him.
“I wish I could stay and chat but I have a date with the future.” He threw his head back and cackled maniacally. In another moment he was gone. Along with the entire city. All that was left was Jinx standing in the middle of a circle of dirt. As she looked to the sky a single word escaped her lips.
“Shit.” As she looked at the beautiful sky a smile started to spread across her face. “I wonder what went wrong.” She then turned to the south and headed off.
As she walked back to civilization and warmth a familiar if unwanted voice appeared in her head. Well that could have gone better. It said.
“Well I had no idea he would use a spell to take the whole city.” She grumbled still quite annoyed at this turn of events. She continued to walk.
If it helps you he didn't move the city somewhere, but rather sometime.
“That would explain his last quip. How far?” She asked not once breaking her stride.
One thousand years to be exact.
“Shit guess I won't get a second chance then.” She sighed. 'To have come so far just fail at the last trapdoor'.
Well I wouldn't say that. She growled at the voice. If there was one thing she hated it was being kept in the dark. You see you are not exactly a regular mortal anymore. At those words she stopped. There was a look of shock on her face.
“What am I then?!” Her voice squeaked a little at the question. The voice suddenly realized his mistake. It didn't think she would have had such an adverse reaction to the knowledge she wasn't mortal.
Well you are a um a uh spirit. He said. More specifically a spirit of bad luck, hence your magic. At those words she sunk to her knees. The weight of what was said finally hit her.
She began to cry. For the first time since her arrival. She cried. She didn't cry when she awoke in the forest. She don't bat an eye when she found she had no memories. She didn't even whimper when she met the nice ponies who helped her, then when they found out she wielded bad luck, ran her out of town. She wasn't scared when the voice told her that she needed to help and protect the ponies. She didn't grimace at the treatment of ponies in the Crystal Empire. For some reason though this one revelation seemed to shatter her emotional walls.
Wearily she stood up and continued forward. She looked to her left and saw a cave. 'I have lost the will to keep walking today. Right now I just want to sleep'. She made her way over to the cave. After she was inside she sat with her back up against the wall and curled up. She cried. She let every single emotion she had ever felt out at that one moment. It was painful and wonderful all at the same time. After a while though she just felt hollow. Then she thought back to her past. What she could remember anyway. She remembered the time she helped a village defend itself against monsters. The time she helped a wounded crystal pony that had escaped the empire. She began to focus on the good feeling that came with helping others.
She didn't shift her position at all. Her tear stained face did change though. It shifted to reflect a promise. A silent oath she made that day. She didn't know if the ponies wanted her help. Even if they didn't want it they were going to get it.
