Several years after the end of Twilight and company's adventures, she has settled in to leadership with her fellow princesses, Celestia, Luna, Cadence, Nightmare Moon, Molestia, and a reformed Chrysalis. Sombra has made a return and was defeated, but his actions left a terrible curse over the ponies of the Crystal Empire, rendering all but Shining Armor and Cadence sterile. After considering several options, surrogacy is decided on, Chrysalis offering the use of a fertility formula she uses from time to time to help make volunteer mothers more fertile. It's a very potent potion, and Twilight wants to study it first to see if its effects can be toned down somewhat.

And then Discord gets involved, deciding he wants to make things more interesting.
