Chapter 5: sparks will fly

Shadow Veil walked past many ponies, including Twilight's friends, before he came to an open seat at the end of the table, separated from the other guests by at least a seat space. He promptly sat down, but instead of engaging in dinner conversation, he simply admired to glass works around the room. He received a few stairs from the guests nearest to him, but no pony said anything. Well, almost no pony.

The dark pony was gazing up at the stained glass window of 6 ponies using their elements of harmony against nightmare moon when a pink pony popped out from behind him, nearly sending him into a heart attack, and stumbling in his seat.

"Hi there! What cha doing all the way over here?! The party's over there!" She said to him as she stood On top of his head and pointed towards the other guests who watched with frightened looks at the dark stallion being bothered by the party pony.

But rather then perform some violent act that would frighten Pinky Pie away, Shadow Veil simply used magic to lift the party pony gently off of his head, placed her in the seat next to him, then spoke monotony "I prefer to eat alone. I enjoy my solitude. But thank you for yo-"

Before Shadow Veil could finish his sentence, Pinky Pie lifted both him and his chair up, carried him over to where her and her friends were sitting, plopped him down next to where her and Fluttershy were sitting, and took the seat next to him.

"I think I know the reason why your so sad" she exclaimed Shadow Veil.

He raised a half alerted and suspicious eyebrow at the energy filled, pink pony. "You... Do?"

"Pfffff, of course silly. It's completely obviouse!" She told the dark stallion.

Shadow Veil just stared at pinky pie for a moment, wondering if she was going to elaborate. But when she didn't go on with her explanation, she only sat there, looking at him with a smile and eyes that did not blink, he pushed for an answer. "And the obvious reason would be...?"

"Well you feel bad about what happened earlier, but you don't want to make it awkward for any of the guests, so you hid yourself back there, hoping I would bring you here to apologize to Twilight, me, and he rest of us, and we can all be friends, duh!" She said all that without taking. Any kind of a breath until the end. "But you know, you didn't have to go threw all that, silly. All you had to do was say you were sorry, and then we all could be friends!"

Shadow Veils worries dissipated, and he decided this might actually work in his favor. He didn't want to over do it, but he knew he would have to break from his true character in order to gain some trust from Princess Celestia.

He turned his head towards the purple alicorn princess, bowed his head, and said "I apologize for my earlier actions. They were out of line, and I made things awkward between us. I never meant for you to feel as though I put you or your friends in any danger. I had the situation under control, and I would never allow harm of any kind to come to an innocent. Especially ones as favored and important as you 6."

Shadow Veil looked up to be met by the suspicious eyes of Twilight Sparkle, Applejack, Rainbow dash, and Rarity. Fluttershy averted her gaze, but amazingly Pinky Pie met him with a smile.

"See!" She screamed in his ear and draped her for-leg around his neck. "Don't you feel better?! And now that that's done, you can sit with us and we can talk about things, like what we like to do for fun, or what our favorite ice cream is, or our favorite cookie, and we can go to parties all together and drink punch and dance, and we'll be great friends-"

"NO!" Shadow Veil stopped the party pony before she could continue with her future fun. Sparks shot from his horn and into the table, but only enough to do that, not damage anything in the table. His gaze turned to stone as he averted his eyes from the group who were probably in their guard now. Flashes from the past overcomes him, forcing a few more sparks from his horn.

He took a deep breath, closed his eyes, relaxed for a second before meeting Pinky pie's curious look. He forced a smile, coughed to clear his throat, the processes to say "I simply meant to apologize. We don't need to go as far as being... Friends..." The last word was strained as if he forced it out.

Pinky Pie looked as if she didn't understand, but before she could say anything about it, Shadow Veil added "but how about we have that party some time, eh?" Again forcing a smile. "And we can have cup cakes, the chocolate kind with strawberry filling and strawberry frosting with sprinkles. The kind you really like, right?"

Pinky Pie stared at him blankly for an unnerving second. Shadow Veil just sat there, a forced smile glued in place. And after an eternity in that short moment, Pinky Pie wrapped her front legs around him without a moments notice and began squeezing the life out of him. This sent twilight and her other friends, as well as Shadow veil, into shock. She then began swinging the large dark pony side to side like a rag doll. "I knew we were going to be best friends! You even knew what kind of cup cakes I like. And the kind of filling. What kind of cupcakes do you like? Or are you more of a cookie pony? Or do you like muffins more? Either way, I want to know so I can plan it for the party!"

As a last ditch effort, Shadow Veil used magic to teleport himself out of the pink one's right grip, and reappear behind her. Small sparks flickering off of his horn. "Thank you for that, miss Pinky Pie. We will have to set up the party for some time in the near future. However, for the moment, I wish to take my seat back at the other end of the table."

As he began to walk away, Pinky reappeared in front of him. "But don't you want to sit with me and your other new friends?"

Shadow Veils forced smile turned sickly and he looked over to the other 5 element holders. Their looks were either more forced to appear happy then his own smile or were glares of deep suspicion. He turned back to Pinky Pie, who was the only one with an honest and sincere smile. "No offense to you, miss Pinky Pie, but it would be in everyone's favor if I were to take my rightful seat at the far end. Away from everyone."

Pinky Pie frowned, and her eyes grew huge and began to fill with water. " But you'll be all alone down there. Won't you be lonely?"

"I am most content to my solitude, miss Pinky Pie." His sickly smile faded as he began telling the honest truth. "I believe everyone would be more comfortable this way. But tell you what, we'll start working On that party right after dinner, ok?"

"You silly head!" Pinky Pie immediately cheered up as she bounced all around the dark stallion. "It's going to be a surprise party, you won't know when it happens! But I do need to know what you prefer! Muffins, cupcakes, cookies, oh! Or all! We could have muffins inside of cupcakes that have cookies sprinkles on top! Or we could-"

"I think I'll leave that to you, miss Pinky Pie. After all, it is what you are good at, right?" The dark stallion complemented pinky as he slowly made his way back to then end of the table, leaving pinky pie shooting off ideas with her friends.

As he made it back he sat back where he was, pulling a chair from the other side to where he wished to sit. And he once again began to examine the stained glass window of nightmare moon, as he drifted deep into thought.

Rainbow dash' eyes never came off the dark stallion since he first entered the room. But her concentration was interrupted when rarity poked her side, making her flinch.

"What do you make of him?" Rarity asked her group of friends, trying desperately to keep her voice down.

"I don't trust him" Rainbow dash said, shooting a glair at the dark unicorn at the end of the table. "Something is defiantly off about him."

"Like the' fact that he tried ta' fry us up like home made apple fritters?" Applejack added in, not bothering to keep her voice down.

"But, um..." Fluttershy began to say. "He did say that he, well, he had control of it. And that we weren't in any real harm, I mean, he did seem to know what he was doing. Maybe..."

"I don't think it matters much, even if he knew weather or not he could control it." Rarity added, no longer speaking in a whisper.

"I agree" Twilight finally spoke up. "A magical duel is one thing, but threatening my friends and brining them into it is another."

"But he said he was sorry" Pinky Pie stopped talking about party plans and joined in on the conversation. "And I bet a party would help him turn his frown upside down."

Fluttershy nonchalantly looked over at Shadow veil who was still deep in thought at then end of the table. It was then something bothered her about the way he looked. And then a few slight sparks flickered off of his horn, making Fluttershy think he had noticed her with I him, and she quickly averted her eyes. The conversation quickly died down not long after that.

The dinner continued as well as to be expected. The first course of either salad or soup was served, and not long after the last guest diminished, the main meal was served. But whilst everyone began their dinner, a new figure barged into the room.

He was an older looking Pegasus pony solider, with parts of his helmet dented, a few feathers missing from his left wing that made an obvious gap, and a scar over his right eye. But these inflictions were from battles that lie in the past. He made his way up to the head of the table, and kneeled down before the princess sisters.

"Your majesties" he said, his voice very stiff and rough. "I don't mean to disturb you, but a subject requires immediate action."

"What is it General?" Princess Celestia asked the old Pegasus.

"We need more ponies at the front line," his voice dropped down to almost nothing as he spoke more on the subject. No one else other then the sisters could hear the elderly soldier pony.

"I will allow it, but please be careful, I have a very bad feeling about this." Concern shown in the sun princess's eyes and the old warrior bowed and turned away.

As the elderly Stallion was about to leave, he noticed a familiar and unfriendly face out of he corner of his eye. He turned and approached shadow veil who ignored him and used magic to levitate his glass and take a drink.

"Well, well, well" the old stallion knight began. "Lookup what we have here. Isn't this an amazing sight? The 'all-mighty-Shadow Veil" has graces us with his presence, what's the occasion, your majesty? Has all of Equestria been turned upside down?!"

Shadow Veil kept a poker face as he finished sipping his drink and used Magic to lift a napkin to his lips before answering to the old solider, not even nothing to put on a forced smile. "Always a pleasure to deal with one such as you, general. But don't you have some war to go and fight?"

"I'd watch yourself, you maggot." The general shot at shadow veil. "From what I hear, you really crossed the line today, not only attacking another student, but this one a princess A princess!." A confident smirk stretched across the old pony's face. "I also hear that Princess Celestia might even enlist you to me as a new recruit-"

"That won't happen" Shadow Veil interrupted the old stallion, small sparks shooting off of his horn. "Princess Celestia's knows how I feel about your use of magic. You use it as a weapon to win wars, it's no different then a spear or catapult to you. And for another thing general," shadow veil's poker face cracked slightly, revealing a shimmer of distasteful anger. "I did not 'attack' the princess twilight sparkle, I engaged her in a magical duel. Nothing more. No real harm had come to her, nor anyone else-"

"You call it what you want" the general interrupted. "But I know that it got so out of hand that the princess had to break you two up. I don't want you to worry though."

This notion shocked shadow veil slightly, but he knew the general better then to let his guard down for very long around the old war pony. "And why shouldn't I worry, dear general?"

"Becouse" he began to say sincerely, then the egotistical Amir reappeared. "I've broken worse ponies then you in the first week of training. I'll have you acting like a proper solider in no time, once Princess Celestia hands you over to me."

"Although I admire your enthusiasm, general" Shadow Veil began. "And I do understand your need for more personnel, and my skills would be of great use to you, but I simply do not agree with you and your view on magic. Perhaps some time I could teach 'you' a lesson on it." Amazingly, shadow veil kept his cool threw the awkward conversation, with only a few slight sparks shooting off of his horn.

The general felt his blood boiling, but before he could say anything further, shadow veil coughed slightly into his hoof, and pointed with his eyes at the guests at the table. The general looked around at the dinner guests who were all looking at he general with awkward gazes. The general felt his anger submerge beneath a sea of embarrassment. He then smiled and laughed nervously before turning back to the dark unicorn, who took great pleasure in the general's awkwardness.

"...I'll see you at the barracks."

"If your going to throw me a party there maybe, and you might have to have a word with miss pinky pie before you plan anything. She's an expert."

Frustrated, the general stormed out of the room just as several waiters entered, carrying trays with third magic.

"Oh good, Dessert " shadow veil said with a smile in a low voice so only a few select ponies heard his comment.
