Chapter 1: Scootaloo's Prologue

Crisp, wintry air was the first clear indication that Winter was right around Ponyville's corner; which meant in this time duration, older residents were busily making preparations for the next season. On the other side of this not-so-carefree occasion, naive minors were overwhelmed for the upcoming break. It gave hardworking students a short, well-earned break from school to relax and enjoy the holiday's.

It was clearly obvious why this season was fairly enjoyable for everyone. The days passed very slowly and peacefully one-by-one, and there was always a great harvest seasons for the farmers whom lived in the small village. The town felt warm, and was lightly scented in a sweet fragrance of: apples, sugary sweets, and a variety of spices.

The hardworking pastry chiefs had dedicated long hours of their time in trying to make delectable pastries for the community. Often times, children had stopped in for a quick bite to satisfy their sweet tooth. Sugarcube Corner became busier than ever, but it was great for business and the prices were low, but efficient so no one really complained for that matter.

While a lot was going on in Ponyville, Scootaloo (a grade schooler) and a numerous amount of other school kids had anticipated a small hoof-ful of days without any homework or classwork. The students appreciated the free education they were given, but in reality, a short vacation was really rewarding for all the hard work they put into their jobs.

Alike most of her fellow pupils, Scootaloo just couldn't wait to get out of school. The Crusaders and Scootaloo were planning a meeting back at their secret base as soon as school was completed for the day.

"If only the day could go by quicker!" Scootaloo moaned angrily as she made her way to the school building.

The morning bell did eventually ring for little ol' Scootaloo. It briskly snapped the filly back into reality; causing her to become aware of the fact that she only had thirty seconds to rush into class before she was marked absent or tardy. Her wings fluttered before her hooves moved in a quick pace, never missing a beat as she scampered to the door. The wind pushed all her hair back and she cheered aloud as she entered the class with time to spare. As soon as she had arrived into the building, she had been greeted by shining smiles from her fellow classmates. Everyone looked excited for the day that lay ahead of them.

Each student had kindly smiled towards their teaching instructor as she warmly welcomed them all back. She ensure no one was outside before closing the door, and addressing her class as she normally would.

Scootaloo spotted the recognizable faces of her fellow Crusaders, Apple Bloom and Sweetie Belle. The two girls were chatting amongst themselves, laughing and giggling quietly. Scootaloo called out to them with a grin, and the fillies' ears perked up immediately.

"Scootaloo!" They both said in unison and waved towards their Pegasus friend.

Scootaloo's smile softened as she waved back. Cheerilee rung her small bell which was a simple gesture that class had commenced. Friends said their goodbyes and momentarily everypony had taken their seats.

Once roll-call began, it had seemingly appeared that everyone was present. 'First time for everything.' Scootaloo thought as the morning announcements followed shortly after. Today seemed as though the clock had moved at a slow pace. Making Scootaloo wonder if this day was ever going to come to an end, but unfortunately, in class they all were practicing their mathematics. It was a review for the test that would be happening a week after their break. Everyone had to admit that division was never their favorite topic.

Scootaloo did her best to complete her work diligently and swiftly. Eventually, she had flown through Mathematics, History, and Science and her favorite subject had finally approached. Lunch. She knew she always aced this one, even though it technically wasn't a class nor was it worth a grade.

Groups departed the room as they made their way to the picnic tables outdoors. The Cutie Mark Crusaders ate lunch at their table and began to eat their packed lunches. As they munched on their sandwiches they all shared their thoughts on what each of them believed was the best way to earn their cutie marks.

"I think if we became circus ponies we might have a shot at making easy cash, and having some spotlight attention." Scootaloo said quickly as she bit off a chunk of her daisy sandwich.

Apple Bloom gave her friend an uneasy look. "Ya... Ah'm not sure about ya Sweetie Belle, but ah ain't too keen on the idea of entertainin' hundreds."

Sweetie Belle shrugged. "She does have a point, Scootaloo."

Scootaloo pouted slightly and crossed her forearms in response. "It was just a suggestion..." She said glumly.

Then Sweetie Belle's horn hit up and sent tiny sparks of magic flying above them. "Oooh! I have an idea!!!!" She shouted.

"What is it...?" Scootaloo asked as she rested her cheek on her right hoof.

"How about we trying getting out sisters' cutie marks!!!!" Her eyes were sparkling with enthusiasm and excitement. Her mouth formed a large, bright smile. The two girls were well-aware that Sweetie Belle always admired her older sister.

Apple Bloom gave an astonished look, but Scootaloo smiled a little.

"That's kinda clever..." Scootaloo said softly. Apple Bloom simply nodded in agreement as she devoured the remaining bits of her apple.

"Really?!" Sweetie Belle questioned as her voice squeaked excitedly. "Great! All we have to do is copy the exact same actions our sisters' had when they gained their cutie marks."

"Huh?" Scootaloo had a confused expression as she and Apple Bloom struggled to comprehend what their crazed friend meant.

"In other words, we have to recall what Applejack, Rarity, and Rainbow Dash did to discover their hidden talents."

The bell interrupted their conversation, literary cutting it short. The three girls sighed disappointed that lunch was already over, but each smiled as they wondered what it would be like being just like their older sisters...

In art today the drawing instructions were fairly simple: each student was required to create a picture that resembled who they were and their ideal future they had in mind. Once these basic instructions were given to the class, everyone picked up a pencil and began their masterpieces.

It seemed like an easy task, because almost everyone had at least a vision of their future. Almost everyone, but Scootaloo. The clueless Pegasus gave a long stare at the paper as if expecting it to make something on it's own. She knew the motionless sheet of drawing paper wasn't going to draw the answers for her, so she picked up her pencil and brought it to the pale, white surface.

Before the pencil drew anything, a thought crossed the filly's mind...

What did she want to do...?

Never did the thought really cross her mind. She was so distracted by what was already in front of her that she didn't think much about her future... But when the question had crossed her, her answer always had been: "I want to be just like Rainbow Dash when I'm older!"

She was mature enough to know her answer was both selfish to herself and her idol... It wasn't original or smart to copy the dreams of her idol, she needed a dream she could actually call her own... But what did she even want to do when she was older...

The final bell rang and disturbed her deep train of thought.

"Thank Celestia..." Scootaloo sighed as she stood up from her seat and packed her things.

Many students were in quite a rush, like a race of life or death as they exited the classroom. The excited kids just shoved their books, papers, and pencils into their book bags. As they each competed to get home as fast as possible, no one seemed concerned for who had gotten trampled in the process. The Cutie Mark Crusaders were somewhat patient, so they were the last students still standing in the classroom.

Scootaloo made her way to the door, but was stopped as Cheerilee asked Scootaloo for the art assignment. She didn't complete it, but she had to turn it in anyway...

She handed the blank piece of paper to her instructor. "Here..."

Ms. Cheerilee smiled, thanking Scootaloo. Her attention turned to the paper. The canvas was filled with blank areas, except for the boldly written words that looked like they were scrawled on her paper.

Her hoof-writing was quite chaotic, but the words were fortunately still eligible. They read: "I have no dream."

She was shocked slightly by the note written. Scootaloo was not the type of girl who didn't have any interest in a particular career. There was plenty of time left for her student to come up with her own dream, but..

"Scootaloo-" Ms. Cheerilee spoke up a moment too late as it would seem the filly had already departed the classroom.
