StarLight looked up at what could only be described as a magical night sky, the way the stars always shined in the black of night, the way the moon gave a cool, comforting light to the world, the scene before him always put him to ease. Unlike most colts his age, he had a crush on Princess Luna.
StarLight was a young unicorn, of about twenty three years in age. His mane was a moon light white, his fur a dark grey and his eyes held a golden hue. He was a run of the mill unicorn, who spent most night star gazing or watching other amazing feats, such as the "auroras".
"Wow its beautiful tonight." He said laying on his back, gazing up to the sky. Smiling softly StarLight stood and started to trot home hesitantly. "The night is magnificent your majesty." StarLight mused as he looked up to the moon. He didn't want to, but he had to go to bed.
-Castle of the Royal Pony Sisters-
"Sister! Please! No pony loves my night!" Luna said crying.
"I said no Luna, we need to keep the the kingdom whole." Celestia said affirmatively. " besides, there may be a pony who loves your night, you just haven't seen it yet"
"O..Okay sister... " Luna said looking down somberly ~but sister, no pony loves my night, no pony ever will~ she thought, she looked out over the moon lit world, a grey stallion with a white mane and tail was laying down, even he ignored my night!? Tears streaming down her face, Luna sobbed heavily ~I can handle this~
Walking up to her room, the lunar princess noticed it was darker then normal, even though her moon was out "has Celestia's shadow begun to even cover my night?"
-the next day-
StarLight yawned and walked outside, it was about noon and the sun was high into the air. Grunting as he pulled his blinds shut, starlight yawned again. He was finish with his job, what that exactly was, was drawing a star map, simple enough, but he then delivering it to the castle for the Lunar princess to approve, to make sure it copied her night exactly before sending the charts off for to publisher to put into a book.
StarLight yawned once again before walking into his bathroom to clean up, once he finished he grabbed an apple and the charts, and trotted to the castle. Upon arriving, Starlight noticed the castle was in ruin, no pony was around. "Hello? Princess Luna? Princess Celestia?" He called out.
Turning the corner StarLight saw saw Celestia looking down, her mussel had visable lines where her tears had been. Looking up at the strange unicorn, she spoke "who are you?" She asked before standing.
Bowing StarLight spoke "I am StarLight, your majesty, may I speak with princess Luna, I have a stellar chart for her to check" the unicorn said with a smile that soon faded as the tears returned "princess?"
-earlier that day-
A dark mist engulfed the blue alicorn and filled her entire being with a dark energy, feeding on the jealousy of its victim, the mist grew strength and overpowered its pray, unable to scream, unable to call for help, Luna lost her voice, then heard it, but, she was not speaking ~oh my poor little pony, thou sister hath never loved thee~ it said wickedly with a smile ~had she, she would hath aloud us to start our own kingdom, or saved us from that horrible mist~ a wicked smile grew on the ponys face ~let us destroy our dear sister, and then every pony will enjoy our beautiful night, forever!~ Luna smiled as she stood "yes, they will."
Walking to the throne room Luna smiled at her sister, who, returned the unknown faux gesture of kindness. "Are you ready to lower the moon sister?" Celestia asked with the same, warm smile.
"Lower the moon, no, I will never lower the moon and the night, shall last forever!" Luna yelled. Celestia jumped back as Luna fired a power beam of magic at her.
"Luna stop this madness!" Celestia yelled, her smile vanishing and a growl growing on her face. To this Luna cackled madly.
"Luna? I am not Luna! I AM NIGHTMARE MOON!" And on cue, the mist, transformed Luna into nightmare moon.
-the destroyed throne room-
"And then I banished her, I'll...I'll never see my little sister again." Celestia said looking down once again "it's all my fault, I should have let her have her colony, I should."
"No princess, it's my fault, I should have been here the moment I was finished, perhaps then, perhaps then she would have known some pony enjoyed her night." StarLight said looking down at the charts. "Princess, I have an idea, it'll take a thousand years, but you'll get your sister back. And you'll be able to cleanse her of her dark emotion. I've pretty much spent most of my life reading, and I might not be the greatest at magic, but I believe it'll work."
After listening to StarLights a small smile grew on her face "Well, my little pony, it does sound quite risky, but I hope your right. And you are right about their being a powerful unicorn born every thousand years. But you are wrong that one has yet to be born, because you are him, I sense great power in you." Celestia said with a smile "but you need training to hone your skills, tell me, do you have friends or family."
"Just a few, your majesty," Starlight said looking down.
"Well, to keep them safe, incase discord escapes now Luna is no longer connected to the elements of harmony, we need to change your name." Celestia said smiling "how does, StarSwirl sound?" She asked with a smile.
"I like it, your majesty." StarSwirl said.
After many years of training, StarSwirl became an arcane master. Failing only to finish one spell, he became a master of time and space. His very last spell would take almost one thousand years to finish, having placed a spell on the stars themselves, to move slowly towards the moon, and with the help of Celestia, where she would use very little of her magic on the eve of the Sumer Sun Celebration to weaken the spell done by the elements of harmony and free her sister.
As his horn stopped glowing, an aged StarSwirl lay on his death bed, smiling at his lifelong friend, StarSwirl pointed to Celestia "you, you have been the greatest friend any pony could have. Just do one thing for me, make sure the next prodigy has lots of friends. You where right about it Celestia, nothing is more powerful then the...magic...of...friend...ship" StarSwirl said as his final breath left him and his eyes closed.
Picking up his final spell book, tears of pained joy in her eyes "thank you, my friend." Celesta said, kissing StarSwirl's forehead
As days moved like seconds, weeks like minutes, months like days, Celestia was smiling at the statue of her dearly departed friend "it'll only be a few more years, and thanks to you, I will see my sister again." As celesta turned, a serge of magic filled the air ~the magic of friendship~ she thought to herself with a smile "I will teach them, my friend, I will teach them" and with a flap of her wings, she flew towards her new student.
