Me and my brother

Me and my brother saved the world. We've done it countless times. All from one thing we did Equestria has been changed for the better. I told my foals and they wanted to tell their foals but I reminded them that I an't dead yet and while I'm kicking I'm gonna be telling my story to my grandfoals. So listen up so you can tell your foals and our family will pass down the story about how me and my brother did it, how we saved the world.

My story starts simply and boringly. I was born. I'm a pegasus, always have been and always will be. We're twins, me and my brother, but I came first so I was always in charge, being the older brother. Dad was a pegasus like us but momma was an earth pony, a farmer, so we stayed down with her. She grows bananairs, those bananas that grow in trees with clouds instead of leaves. It was her compromise with dad. He stayed and married her in return for her growing produce he has to fly to collect for her. I say compromise, he didn't ask, why would he? He was in love with her from the moment he laid eyes on her, she could have grown potatoes for all the difference it would have made to him. They named my brother Fog Gate and me Cloudbiter because I'm stark white like Foggy and momma, well, I may have bitten my brother when he was born. Not hard, I was minutes old, but I definitely bit him. I wanna say that was the first and only time we fought but we either loved each other or hated each other and when we hated each other it usually came to blows.

So growing up on a bananair farm meant that not only did Foggy and I become strong fliers but we also got pretty strong. Bananairs can be picked straight from the clouds, at the top of the tree, that's how you get the freshest ones, or you can buck the trees to get the low hanging fruit to fall. So we'd do both and got pretty good. We didn't spend much time off the farm, just the time we spent in the school a few miles down. It was a long fly but it was just a thing we did. We never complined about it because it was just how we got to school. It did unfortunately mean that we never got anypony to come down to the farm with us until we were nearly stallions and the others were allowed out late enough to make the trip there and back.

I still remember school. We had a great little gang. There was me and foggy, of course, but there was Dough Ball, we learnt quickly that if anypony made fun of his name it was me and foggy that would have to hold back the mass of muscles that earth pony had honed over the years. There was Tectonic, now he had an answer for everything, definitely the unicorn you wanted helping you on an assignment. Finally there was Candy Cane. Candy lived on the sugar farm on the other side of town with her dad and sisters. She was clever, funny and could buck you in the gut if you gave her any nonesense and she drove me wild. She was my first love and she'll always be in my heart. I remember the day I saw her in her wedding dress, she was practically radiant.

Unfortunately Foggy, Dough and me weren't the cleverest colts so we relied on Candy and Tectonic to get by. If it wasn't for them I swear we would have been stuck in Mr. Rule's class forever but in the end we got through and passed by the skin of our teeth. Our problem then was what did we do? Here we were, five grown up ponies, ready to get out there and make something of ourselves but we couldn't bear to do it. We couldn't split up the gang, or at least we thought that. Nopony wanted to be the first one to leave. Everyday we would all meet up in town and just hang out in the evening, working just enough at home in the mornings to not get kicked out.

Tectonic was the first to leave, he got a scholarship to a university to get his rockterate. We were so pleased to him, by Celestia that pony deserved it. In my long years I've met a lot of ponies and I have met four cleverer than him and only two cleverer about rocks. The fact that the university were letting him in for free because of his test scores was great, there's no way his family had money to pay for him to go to college on miner's wages. I heard he went back in the end and made a tool for unicorns to use in the mines. It had always upset him that he couldn't keep up with his dad because he was a unicorn.

There was no way we thought anypony could split the rest of us up. In the end though Dough's dad kicked him out, apparently he hadn't been helping out like he told us. We weren't about to abandon a friend though, we brought him down the farm and he worked with us. He was pretty good at it, he was a much better bucker than a baker. He could buck so hard that the bananairs from the top of the trees (the freshest ones remember?) would fall. He still works on our old farm, he owns it now! Momma gave it to her in the will. It was only fair and we were happy for him, after Dad had passed away and Momma had gotten older it was Dough that kept the money rolling and the bananairs falling.

We found work late, me and my brother. Even Candy Cane had a job, she had started up a shop selling sweets made from the sugarcanes her family grew. In the end we just joined the military. We were fast and tough and more intimidating than acrobatic. The stallion at enrolment wasn't too pleased our low grades but we just scaped by. We pulled each other through the competance exams and all the physical stuff  in boot camp and in the end we got assigned to the royal guard!! It was around this time that wecame home for a bit. I was in for the surprise of my life but when I was in that church and I saw Candy Cane walk down it was the happiest day of my life at that point. I was never one for letters but Candy was and so was Foggy. Apparently he'd sent a ring in his last letter and she replied with five minutes. I even met my wife at that wedding but we didn't get married for a long time. I remember we had the biggest argument over literature. She thought Sherclop Pones was the greatest series of books and I thought they were really bad plays. That was the day I learned about her fearsome right hoof.

Not long after Foggy came back his honeymoon in Trotsford we were moved to Canterlot. Cancy moved her shop down there and lived with Foggy and the foal she had a couple of years later. I was stuck in the barracks though. I did take up writing letters though and it was real nice to get repies from Desert Rose. I'd always get letters late from her, she was studying in Saddle Arabia about foreign flowers but I'd get up whenever a letter arrived and read it eight times over and write my reply. I'd always have to write it twice because Candy would have to check the spelling for me but I never let her change the words. She tried once or twice but in the end it had to be my words that Rosie was reading when she got my letter.

If I'm being honest it was boring in the Guard for me and Foggy. We just trudged on day to day, mstly on guard duty. It sounds horrible but when you're standing there for hours you just hope for something to go wrong. We'd stand there outside the Princess' chambers or be out on patrol and just think about what it could be like if things didn't go to plan. For example I would often think about what it would be like if there was an assassination attempt. Picture it: an changeling sneaks its way into the palace and tried to kill Princess Celestia. If I stopped them I would be a hero and everypony would know my name. I would get to be in the papers and go to the parties we always had to guard.

There weren't a huge amount of pegasi stationed in Canterlot. Most of us were in the cities of old Pegasopolis, like Cloudsdale. There were even less that fateful week, every single pegasus was called to Cloudsdale for the Summer Sun Celebration. It's the closest aerial city to Ponyville who were hosting the celebration so everypony was told to go there. Not me and Foggy though, we were given a special assignment straight from Princess Celestia herself! To this day I don't know why she picked us but not a day goes by that I regret her decision. She gave us the most important assignment of our entire lives.

All we had to do was a simple transport. It was only from Canterlot to Ponyville so it took us an hour or two at most but the journey wasn't what was important. What was important was our cargo. We took Twilight Sparkle, yes that Twilight Sparkle to Ponyville. She went on to solve the mystery of the Mare in the Moon that night! She came out of the Everfree Forest with the Elements of Harmony and the long lost Princess Luna. That mare and her friends would save Equestria and the rest of the world countless times and I always knew that if it wasn't for me and Foggy it couldn't have happened and here's why:

We were the strongest fliers in the Guard so we were able to pull Princess Twilight there faster than anypony else, the bananair farming paid off that day. Everypony has heard Twilight Sparkle's story. She met her friends one after the other, she took no detours and had no breaks. Timing was everything. If she had arrived late then Pinkie Pie, the Element of Laughter, wouldn't have been able to have the surprise party ready in time. Thats how we saved Equestria.

It was years before Foggy and me realised the importance of our job that day. We never asked for special treatment, it was just a story we would tell down the bars and at dinner parties. There's something I  never thought I would have when I was younger. I don't think I ever would have if Rosie hadn't have enjoyed them. Once I plucked up the courage to propose, or when Foggy and Candy finally stopped me talking myself out of it, and me and Rosie started living together we had a whole bunch of dinner parties. Soon it wasn't just the parents too as Foggy and Candy would bring their little colt to play with our foals. We even had Dough and Tectonic over once or twice.

I remember a few years back, I say a few but it was really about a dozen. Old Foggy was going and we were all there in the room. Me, Candy, Tectonic and Dough. We just spent hours talking about when we were young. That was the end for Foggy, he just went quiet and didn't say anything else. I leant in close to him. I don't know why, I just wanted to be close to him once last time I suppose. Suddenly, without warning, he shot up and bit me. Not hard, he was old, but he definitely bit me. We were all stunned for a moment before everypony just laughed and laughed. That's when Foggy passed away, with a huge stupid grin on his face. I'm the only part of the gang left now. I'm still kicking though, telling our story so we aren't forgotten. Life's all about the little things. They're the most important. Little things like a bananair or a sugarcane farm. Little things like the childhood friendship of five misfit foals. Little things like taking a mare from the city to a nearby small town. The little things add up.

And that's how me and my brother saved the world.
