A Darkened Heartby ashes_fallChaptersChapter IIChapter IIIChapter IChapter IVEpilogueChapter IIChapter 2: Taking It to Heart Upon reaching the cloud in question, which was big enough for Cinder and Flitter to comfortably sit on, they positioned themselves so that they had a perfect point of view of all of Ponyville. It was up high enough that they were out of the way of the weather ponies but low enough that they could see everything that was going on. This is what Cinder loved the most. “So Cinder..I have a couple questions for you…” said Flitter in an unusually flirty tone. She was still being very forward with the young colt, her intentions clear, even though Cloudchaser’s words still rang in her ears. Don’t try to push him too far!! If he shows any sign of distrust or being uncomfortable, just stop talking. She shook her head and turned her gaze to the ash colored colt. “Well, don’t keep me in suspense. What are they?” he said with his cool and calm demeanor. Cinder stretched himself out on the cloud, laying down with his front hooves crossed and laid his head on them, his wings reaching over Flitter, but not touching her. He refrained from that until later on. “Do…. You .. have a.. um…. Special somepony??” The question was choked out at best, due to Flitter’s endless giggling and embarrassing blushing. She wiggled closer to Cinder when a cold blast of air hit them. A long silence prevailed between the question and the answer. “… Not for a while now, No.” Cinder had closed his eyes, feeling yet another gust go through his mane. He thought back to Ember, and how much his heart hurt that day. He hadn’t dated anypony since then. Flitter could definitely tell that there was something off with Cinder, as he was being quiet. She hoped she hadn’t blown it. “Ummmm Cinder. Is something wrong?” Another long pause. “It’s something personal from a long time ago”, chortled the young colt. “I’d rather not idly chat about it” “Oh my goodness, I had no idea! I’m so sorry if I hit a nerve…” her voice trailed off, as she saw Rainbow Dash busily scurrying clouds away for an upcoming storm. “It’s fine Flitter. I just….. haven’t fully healed from it.” Cinder had opened his eyes and looking at the young mare. While he was doing so, Flitter cocked her head to one side. “If you wanna talk about it, I’m here to help” replied Flitter. The mare had again shifted her body weight very close to Cinder, touching him now. Just like Rainbow had done earlier. She was trying to make it not look obvious, but it was more a comforting thing than a flirtatious move. A long pause went between them, as Cinder’s eyes followed a couple school age fillies walking home. “If you really want to know, Flitter, than I have to give you my thanks first. It’s been a while since somepony has taken the time” a calm Cinder said, his head resting on his front hooves. Flitter smiled, and as a gust of wind went through their manes, she moved even closer still to Cinder, this time their bodies touching. Cinder, unsure of how to react at first, stiffened when he felt the tender hoof of Flitter touch his own, but gradually started to relax as he prepared to tell her his story. “Well, here goes. It goes like this Flitter. I used to have a special somepony, yes, we were very close. We dated for almost two years together, I could not have been happier at that time. She and I had met at Flight Camp and had fallen in love. It sounds cheesy I know but…” he was intercepted but an affectionate “Awwww” from Flitter. “That’s so cute. What happened?” A long pause. A cool gust of wind went through Cinder’s mane as he closed his eyes and breathed a huge sigh. He tried to make it not obvious that she had hit a nerve, but it was too late. “….I….I caught her with somepony else...” he managed to stifle out. A sharp gasp sounded next to him after a silence. “Cinder… I had no idea… I’m so sorry” said Flitter, a little shake in her voice. It was clear that she was concerned for Cinder. The lavender colored mare nuzzled Cinder gently on the neck, showing her affection that much more. The colt remained silent for a long time after that, slowly thinking about what to say next. “……..Thank you.. Flitter. You’re the first pony I’ve told about this. I really enjoy your company…” Cinder was trying hard to stifle back watery eyes and succeeded. Heartbreak is one of the most horrible things to ever watch somepony else go through, and even worse to experience for oneself. There was a long pause between the two, but it wasn’t awkward in a way, as both were trying to think of things to say. I never knew somepony who has only knew me for a few hours, could show so much affection, Cinder mused to himself. Maybe… just maybe. I should try again. But not for a while. She has to earn my trust. “I really enjoy your company too Cinder… it’s comforting. Most of the colt’s and stallions around here are complete jerks. They only care about us for…. Ya know..” Flitter’s voice trailed off, clearly embarrassed. She was still very close to Cinder, their body heat being shared between the two. “I completely understand, Flit. Where I’m from, it’s the exact same. I’d almost given up on love completely” cracked Cinder, old memories starting to resurface, as he struggled to keep them down. Flitter reached over to Cinder, trying to nuzzle him again, but was met by Cinder’s own muzzle. The two froze as their face’s touched; an almost electric shock went between them. Both their eyes were closed, but they knew exactly what had happened. They stayed there for a while, until Cinder pulled away and opened his deep crimson eyes. “….Umm I don’t know what to say” he whispered, his head still close to hers. She smiled slightly, a somewhat misty look grew in her eyes. “Neither to do I. But that was amazing Cinder… I never knew you were so affectionate” said Flitter with a little surprise in her voice. “The loneliest ponies are often the kindest, Flitter.” Flitter silently thought to herself as their silence continued. My oh my. What. A. Colt. Cloudy told me that these kinds only come around once or twice in a mare’s lifetime… and I think I found one. I know he likes me, but we’ve only known each other for the better half of one day. I want to ask him, but I have a feeling that he’ll say no. On the other hoof…. Maybe I can earn his trust and work up to asking him. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ “You think they know we’re here?,” an unusually feisty Rainbow Dash chirped. She and Cloudchaser had gotten off work early and found the two sitting on a cloud. They had been watching them for about 10 minutes, seeing the cute nuzzling. “They are so cute together,” said Cloudchaser, a careful eye watching what the two did. Cloudchaser had been trying to help her sister out by setting her up with colts around town, but none had worked out. They all wanted one thing and one thing only. While she and Thunderlane were completely happy together, Flitter needed to find somepony and settle down. She was clearly interested in Cinder, but as Rainbow studied his movements, she could see he was slightly, ever so slightly uncomfortable. He had changed his body posture twice, both times after Flitter made moves. “See Rainbow? That’s why I don’t like him,” Raindrops said as she dropped between Rainbow and Cloudchaser. “He’s not sure of himself, and his body language signals insecurity,” she said. “Oh relax Raindrops. Cinder is new to town, and Flitter is being unusually flirty with him. I wouldn’t blame him,” remarked Rainbow as she shrugged” “Should we go over?” a cheerful Cloudchaser chimed in, her mane blowing gently in the breeze. Rainbow paused for a moment, pondering the possible outcomes of Cloudchaser’s comment. On one hoof, they were heading to hit the town, but on the other she thought the two would want some time alone. “Nah,” a reluctant Rainbow Dash muttered. “Let’s let them be. I’m sure they’ll catch up. Flitter knows where to go right?” “Yep.” “Alright then. Should we head out?” Rainbow’s enthusiasm was perked, so she might as well follow through. Cloudchaser didn’t respond, simplying smiling and nodding. The three mares set out into the evening sky. And as they did, Cinder caught their movements with his eyes, wondering where they could be off to. Weird. They must have gotten off work early or something. Should I follow them or stay here with Flitter more… “Hey, wanna meet Rainbow and Cloudchaser for that thing tonight,” Cinder asked gently nuzzling Flitter awake. She stirred and stretched, her long mane falling in front of her face. “Huh? I thought they were working late tonight,” she said. “They’ve been watching us for 10 minutes, Flit. I think they got off early, heh,” replied Cinder. Flitter gasped, blushing slightly and turning to her right, seeing the two flying down to town. “How….how did you know they were there,” she asked. Cinder shrugged, rolled on his back and stretched. He looked around, the sun starting to dip into the ground. He looked over at Flitter as she finished stretching. Their eyes met, and for a moment they were locked in trance. Flitter pulled away shortly after, blushing crazily. Cinder smiled slightly as he got on all hooves, stretching his wings. “Hey Cinder…. Got a second,” said a cautious Flitter as she walked up next to him. “What is it?” he replied, getting ready to jump off the cloud. He had an idea what it was she was going to say, and he already had an answer ready. “I… um… I really enjoyed today. We should do it again sometime,” she said quietly, with a hint of honesty in her voice. “I’m sorry if I seemed a little too pushy… it’s just that…. Um.. you’re a really cool pony,” she added. Cinder smiled slightly as he chuckled, walking over to her until he was right in front of her, with their manes almost touching. “So did I Flitter. I totally agree. You’re a really sweet mare,” he said calmly, watching as Flitter giggled and blushed, again. “Shall we head out?” he asked, turning to jump off. Flitter smiled goofily, like she had just been kissed on her cheek, but shook her head after a few seconds of bliss. “You ready,” she asked. “Yep, after you.” With that, the mare jumped off the cloud and cruised into town. Cinder took a pause right before he jumped, turned around and looked towards the setting sun. So this is what it feels like… _______________________________________ Rainbow Dash and Cloudchaser flew into town slowly, much slower than before. The two had a shorter work day, but the load was much more intense than usual. It was quiet between the two mares. Rainbow glanced the Ponyville Square seeing that the stalls were closing up for the night. The clock read 5:32PM, which meant that most ponies would be getting home from work, and thus the town would be slightly crowded, as it is every autumn. Ponyville saw an influx of ponies, mostly migrants and farmers during the autumn due to the harvest it was famous for. Rainbow and Cloudchaser reached their favorite spot in town, a local restaurant by the name of The Stable. As they went inside, a tiny bell ringing as Rainbow pushed the door open, she was greeted by her closest friends: Twilight Sparkle, Rarity, Applejack, Fluttershy and Pinkie Pie. They were sitting at a booth, chatting idly as their food was being cooked. Twilight was the first to notice Rainbow and Cloudchaser walk into the joint. “Hey Rainbow! Over here!” she said with her usual optimistic voice. Twilight was the town’s librarian, and Princess Celestia’s personal protégé. They had been friends for a little over 4 years, and had countless adventures together. She had a medium purple coat with a purple and pink mane with lavender eyes. Not a bad sight if she said so herself. “Hiya Twilight!” Rainbow responded, trotting over to her friends with Cloudchaser in tow. “What’s up?” Twilight smiled, and got up to hug her friend. “We just got here actually. The girls and I decided to have a night out on the town. Spike is holding down the library and basically forced me out the door “Go have fun for once!”. They giggled together as Cloudchaser slid in next to Fluttershy, and ordered something off the menu. Neither pony heard what it was. “Hey Dash,” Cloudchaser said with a sly grin. “When ya gonna tell your friends about your new “friend””, she said with a wink. At the mention of the word new, the pink ball of sugar known as Pinkie Pie sprung out of limbo. Before Dash could respond she was in front of her, bouncing up and down, wide eyed as usual. “Dashie has a new friend!? Ooooohhhhh I get to throw a party for him!!” she said with an ecstatic squeal that could break the sound barrier. Everypony in town was used to Pinkie’s contagious enthusiasm. It was a Ponyville tradition to welcome a newcomer with his/her own party. “When do we get to meet him Rainbow,” said Rarity, her heavily styled mane gently flowing. “Ah’d like to meet this new friend o’ yours as well, Dash” piped up Applejack. Rainbow Dash smiled and chuckled to herself. “He’s on his way here. He and Flitter should be getting here soon,” she replied, wiggling into the booth next to Twilight. She looked over the menu, but decided not to order anything, for she had food at her house. Just as she set the menu down, she heard the door to the restaurant open with a jingle of the bell. As she turned around, a smile slowly crept across her face. There stood Cinder with Flitter at his side. Cloudy’s right, Rainbow thought. They DO look cute together. “Hey Cinder over here!” Rainbow half shouted across the restaurant, as she got out of the booth to greet them. Applejack and Rarity went wide-eyed when they saw Rainbow’s new friend. As their eyes slid up and down his sleek, toned form, they exchanged an inaudible whisper and a giggle. Cloudchaser, who was sitting next to Fluttershy, noted that as she shot Rainbow Dash a cautious glance over the top of her menu. “So.. Rainbow. This must be your new friend,” Applejack said as she and Rarity practically materialized on either side of her. Rainbow goofily grinned as she blushed slightly. “Yup! Girls, meet Cinder. Cinder, these are my girls, Applejack and Rarity,” replied Rainbow Dash. Cinder smiled and failed to hold a slight chuckle back from his lips as his eyes met first Applejack’s then Rarity’s. “Hi girls. Nice to meet you,” he said calmly, swishing his tail. “Good heavens darling! Your eyes are simply gorgeous!” a transfixed Rarity said as she gazed at Cinder. Rarity had always been the best at fashion in Ponyville. If there was a need, Rarity could almost always fill it. Applejack was just as mesmerized as her, gazing straight at him. “Ah’ll say. Them there eyes are redder than cherry apples at sunset,” a seduced Applejack managed to choke out. However, the two mares did not notice Flitter, who was still standing at Cinder’s side. Her gaze met Rarity’s and Applejack’s, but Rarity was the first to acknowledge her presence. “Oh dear, I’m terribly sorry, Flitter dear. I was just in a trance from your coltfriend’s beautiful eyes,” Rarity charmed. The response from Flitter was enough to entertain thousands. Her cheeks went a full blown cherry red as her eyes went wide. “He is NOT my coltfriend,” Flitter retorted, playfully sticking her tongue out at the two gawking mares. Everypony else in their group starting laughing along, even Cloudchaser noticed her sister’s defensiveness. She closed her eyes and smiled to herself. Sis, you gotta do better than that. “Well Cinder, it’s nice to meet you as well,” a tender voice said behind Applejack’s right flank. It was Twilight, and she had come over to ogle at Cinder. The strange thing about the meeting was…. Pinkie Pie was nowhere to be found. And everyone who had known Pinkie long enough knew exactly where she had gone. “Shall we eat?” Twilight said, glancing at their table, taking note that their food had arrived. She sauntered back to the table, when Cinder caught a glance at him from her. She immediately snapped forward when Twilight noticed she was caught. Applejack and Rarity followed Twilight, the scent of her food beckoning her as well, but she almost ran into a stool as the consequence of keeping one of her eyes on Cinder. The ash colored colt mused to himself, as he saw the mares chat amongst themselves and giggle, exchanging witting glances at the new colt in town. He felt a nuzzle on the right side of his neck, and looked to his right to see a starry eyed Flitter looking back at him. Returning her nuzzle, this time on her cheek, she whispered something in his ear. “Hey Cinder…. I need to talk to you about something tonight… ehe,” she said with a hearty giggle. She had clung to him all afternoon, and wasn’t showing any sign of her leaving. As he checked the clock, it read 7:30PM. Damn it. It’s time for my evening flight. But this mare…… she’s complicating things. In a good way. “Hey Rainbow, I’m gonna go on my evening flight, I’ll catch up with you later,” Cinder said as his cool voice carried through the restaurant. The cyan Pegasus looked up from her food, and waved her hoof at the pair, due to she had a full mouth of food. Gulping she said “Have fun you two,” smiling wryly at Cinder. She was amazed at how relaxed he was around her friends. It was probably because Pinkie wasn’t here. Although Rainbow loved her dearly, she could be a bit...overwhelming at times. The atmosphere of the restaurant was cozy and quiet, a music soundtrack playing in the distant background. Without further ado, he turned for the door, and stepped out into the cool evening glow, with Flitter closely behind him. I guess I can skip my evening flight, just this once¸ he thought to himself. Smiling widely at the still starry eyed mare standing at his side, she beckoned him to follow her, without saying a word. This was unusual behavior at best for Flitter. Cloudchaser had said that she was the reserved type of mare, waiting for colt’s to initiate. Exhaling sharply, to blow a stray dandelion away from his snout, Cinder thought that Cloudchaser had given her tips on how to be more forward. And it was working. Quite nicely. __________________________________________________ Cinder had taken a gamble with returning Flitter’s flirtatious advances. He was normally very outgoing, but after Ember he became very reserved. The two walked in step with each other, Flitter endlessly giggling about something, what Cinder knew it to be he had no idea. As they walked through town, they passed a tea station, apple stall, and city hall. Flitter wanted to go somewhere, Cinder had no idea where. But he had a sneaking suspicion what it was about. They stopped under City Hall’s brilliant lights, and Flitter sat down on a bench outside the building, beckoning Cinder to sit next to her, which he did. Closing his eyes and breathing out slowly, he felt Flitter’s body grow closer to his, and stopping when their wings were touching as well as their forelegs. Such an intimate moment was rare in public around Ponyville, but Flitter paid no mind to it, as she gently nuzzled Cinder on his neck. His heart skipped a beat when she did that, as he could feel the gentle rise and fall of her body against his. They sat there in silence for a couple minutes, and finally Cinder broke the silence this time “So… Flitter,” he said cautiously, gritting his teeth. C’mon Cinder. At least give this one more chance. Memories of Ember had flashed all around him since he had been around Flitter. After that incident those months ago, he thought he was never going to find love again. However… “Yes Cinder?” the starry eyed mare responded, her mane blowing gently in the now night’s breeze. C’MON CINDER. Stop being such a mule and spit it out!! A mare like her might not come around again Silently, he kicked himself back into focus and swallowed. “I uh….. I… think you’re a really awesome mare Flitter,” he almost whispered. Flitter’s eyes went wide, a shiver going through her body. Searching every corner of her mind, Flitter had no response for what Cinder had just said. She would blurt out the one response that she wanted to, however…. Ohmy… He’s answering my signs. But… something is still off about him. Stammering due to a full blush and fluttering heart Flitter could just respond with a tiny little squeek. Cinder noticed her lack of words and smiled. He’d left the poor mare speechless. Chuckling, he took a big risk. Extending his right wing, he let it fall gently over her body, pulling her closer. Cinder gave a small sigh, as Flitter gasped. The mare was wide eyed with a full blush. “Ci..Cinder?” “What? I thought you might be cold,” he replied. He put on a goofy grin at the lavender mare’s gentle eyes gazing back at him. Her reaction was simple. She snuggled up closer to Cinder, their body heat exchanging as they felt each other’s chests rise and fall. They looked up at Luna’s gorgeous night, gently falling over Ponyville. It was beautiful, the stars were twinkling, gentle hills rolling with the evening wind. Cinder finally knew what it meant to be happy. Now he was just going to ask Flitter. But….. Chapter IIIChapter III: Flying High Cinder opened his eyes to find he was no longer in Ponyville, rather in a world of dreams. His eyes went wide to take in everything that he saw. Then she stepped forward. Princess Luna. Princess of the Night and Dreams. Cinder came to the conclusion that he and Flitter had fallen asleep on that bench. Luna stepped forward and leaned her head down to nuzzle Cinder on his neck. “Hello, child. We have things to discuss,” she said in her soothing voice. The soot colored colt looked down, smiled and proceeded to walk with her. “Well Princess, what is there to talk about,” asked Cinder. As they walked, Cinder could see his memories and events of his life flashing past him, in presentation slides. “Do you feel alright Cinder?” Luna asked. “You have been isolating yourself for quite some time, and I’ve grown concerned,” she said stopping at a particular slide. It was the one of Ember. Old feeling of pain and regret rushed to Cinder’s face, causing him to hold back tears. Luna noticed this, and smiled slightly, remaining in her same spot. The ash colored colt felt ashamed that this had to keep coming up. He just wanted to move forward with his life. Lowering his head, Cinder closed his eyes. “You know Princess, yes. I feel like I have moved forward. Flitter and I are becoming very good friends. And I feel someday we’ll become more..” his voice trailed off as a slight pain shot through his left shoulder. That was the signal of him waking up. Luna smiled and gave Cinder one last nuzzle. “Trust your heart Cinder,” she simply said. _____________________________________________________________________________________ Cinder slowly opened his eyes to find that Ponyville was practically deserted, except for a few scattered couples. Cautiously moving around, so as not to stir the mare still next to him, he glanced at the clock. 11:32PM Damn it. I need to get to bed. I know exactly what Luna meant, and she’s right. It’s time. He felt a gentle muzzle touch his neck, and turning to his right, he saw Flitter looking at him, faint stars twinkling in her eyes. Cinder had had a rather interesting first day in Ponyville. He already made some friends, found a mare that is generally interested in him. That made Cinder smile to himself, and as he exhaled slightly, Flitter broke the silence. “We should probably get home, ehe. It’s late. But… I’ll see you tomorrow right?” she asked, hopping off the bench and turning to face Cinder, who was still sitting upright on the bench. Their day together had certainly bore many fruits, her movements being matched by his, her flirtatious advances met once Cinder felt comfortable. He nodded with a slight smile on his muzzle. “Of course Flitter. Cya tomorrow,” Cinder remarked, walking down Stirrup Street, glancing over his shoulder as Flitter fly to her house. He felt a sigh of relief run through his body as he turned his attention back to the street in front of him. Again, he passed the tea station, an apple vendor and other shops, shut down for the night. The night was starry, with a few clouds scattered around, and a cool breeze gently flowing through the streets. As Cinder continued to walk toward his apartment, he noticed that lights were still on in the local library, which was built into an oak tree. Even though it was late, he thought it odd that somepony would be up at nearly midnight. Dismissing the thought completely, he came upon the Carousel Boutique, the fashion spot of Ponyville. It too, was closed up for the night. The town was so peaceful this time of night, being that it was already midnight by the time Cinder reached his apartment. Rather than sauntering up the stairs, he flew up to his third story windows, since he knew he had left it unlocked, and flew into his window. Stretching his wings, he made his way to the shower. The hot water cascading over his ash colored body felt great, as he reconciled his thoughts of the day Heh, first last night getting here, then meeting Rainbow, then her Pegasus buddies, then her close friends, THEN Flitter.. ugh. Some days… Glad I stumbled on this little town. Always hated the big city… His musing was cut short by a glance at the clock. 12:09AM Ponyfeathers¸ he thought. I have to be up early for my morning flight. Without another thought, he jumped out of the shower, drying himself off with a towel, and hopped into his comfortable bed. His eyes slid slowly shut as darkness crept in and took him away from the real world. _____________________________________________________________________________ A shrill alarm broke Cinder’s dreamless slumber. Wondering why Luna did not visit him that night, he slinked out of the bed and glanced at the clock next to his bed 8:30AM Perfect. He always woke up at around that time. Too early seemed nuts, too much later seemed lazy. He hopped out of bed, stretched his wings and thought back to last night. Flitter was being very flirty and forward, which, according to Cloudchaser, was not like her. Maybe she had a change of heart. Choosing not to think too much on it, he made for the shower, which greeted him with its warm embrace. The water trickled over his body, relieving any traces of stress or discomfort. Half an hour later he stepped out, dried himself off, had a quick breakfast and made for his morning flight. As Cinder left his apartment window, the fresh gust of Ponyville’s air hit his muzzle. Celestia’s sun was beaming down on Equestria as everypony went about their day. He could see bakers and newcolts bustling about, as well as mailmares in the sky, delivering today’s news. He smiled as his gaze came across three school age fillies darting towards their school. Even though, he didn’t get much time to look, Cinder could have sworn one was riding a scooter. The ash colored colt soared through the sky, as he continued to watch other ponies down below. He spotted Applejack, Rarity, Twilight trotting down the street together, with Rainbow Dash hovering just above them. Smiling slightly, Cinder turned his attention to the sky in front of him, and adjusted his flight path to the outer parts of Ponyville, maintaining his cruising speed. He allowed his mind to wander slightly, but not too much since he had to concentrate on flying. Duh. Shooting through the outskirts of Ponyville, the amount of ponies started to thin, as expected. The colt turned back to Ponyville, giving long, gentle motions with his wings. He spotted the four mares still trotting down the street happily chatting amongst themselves, their destination unknown. Cinder randomly executed a double barrel roll, for no reason at all. Rainbow Dash caught Cinder’s movement out the corner of her eye, and smiled. “Girls, we have company,” she said with a sly grin. The three other mares shot glances up at the ash colt rolling through the sky. Cinder, oblivious to his audience was barrel rolling, somersaulting and freefalling through the sky. He loved to freefall, where you go up really high in the sky, roll on your back and fall to the ground then launch at the last moment. Finally, after Cinder’s last free fall, he caught a glimpse of Rainbow’s mane blowing in the breeze. Righting himself, he grinned goofily at the three mares transfixed by his feats. Rainbow raised an eyebrow, chuckled then trotted over to Cinder as he dropped to the ground. “Having fun Cinder? You put on quite a show for us,” she remarked dryly with a giggle. “Ah found it to be quite amazing’, if ah must say,” Applejack commented, bringing herself back to reality. “Agreed!” piped up Twilight, who was trotting over to Rainbow and Cinder. “Where’d you learn to fly like that? Only Rainbow is our most “eventful” flyer around here,” she said as her eyes met his, all the while holding a slight grin. Her eyes wandered over Cinder’s figure, then snapped left when a noise sounded. Cinder smiled slightly, folding his wings and adjusting his stance. “Heh, thanks girls. I got bored and decided to..uhm.. mix things up,” he said as a wind blew through Ponyville. He scanned the immediate area around him, seeing nothing of interest. Just then, Rarity chimed in. “We were on our way to get breakfast, darling. Care to join us?” The white mare was looking directly at him, her purple eyes locked on his. Her heavily styled mane was something he hadn’t seen too many other mares using around Ponyville. But everypony had their own style. Cloudchaser was the second pony he could think of who had a stylized mane. “Sorry girls, I’d love to, but I already ate. I’d tag along anyway if that’s ok,” he said, tone even and cool. He never was one for outwardly expressing emotion, and kept them in check 90% of the time. “We don’t mind at all, Cinder. Be happy to have yah tag along,” replied Applejack, starting for the restaurant in question. Cinder followed the queue and fell in with the group, as did the other mares. The colt fell back slightly and listened to the others idly chat amongst themselves. About what, he wasn’t sure. Rainbow Dash trotted in sync with him, but was listening intently and only sometimes remarking about what the others were saying. However, she finally glanced at Cinder, let out a slight chuckle. “So loverboy, how was last night?” The question was worded sarcastically, he could tell that. But it was mixed with seriousness. Trademark Rainbow Dash. “Well, what do you mean “how was it?” We went to the City Hall, camped out on a bench for a couple hours, then separated and went to bed. No big deal,” he replied. Pausing for better word choice, but it was too late. They were already out. “Uh huh. Ya know Flitter really likes you right? I mean REALLY likes you. Cloudy told me she wouldn’t stop talking about you when she got home,” retorted Rainbow. A slight blush came over Cinder’s ash colored cheeks as he thought back to last night. “And she told me this morning that she thinks you’re a really neat colt,” she added. “Sounds to me like you got a mare who’s already smitten with you, after one day too!” Rainbow added a hearty chuckle to a playful punch at Cinder, who was still blushing as his mind mulled over last night. Cinder sighed, “That’s just it Rainbow. After one day, she’s already completely swoon. It’s not that I find it annoying, in fact I don’t at all. But I think she’s moving a bit too fast. I mean, you wouldn’t jump headfirst into a pool if you didn’t know how deep it was right?” The colt half cocked his head to the right, trying to see if that made sense. The cyan mare nodded in response. “Yeah I agree with you. I mean, I understand the whole “love at first sight” thing, but you’re right. She’s moving too fast. Cloudy says she’s usually way more reserved, even shy around colts and stallions.” As they arrived at the restaurant, Rainbow and Cinder’s conversation was cut short by Twilight popping up between them. To be fair, all of Rainbow’s friends were acting a bit off when Cinder was around. Maybe it was a game they were playing. Maybe they were just being nice. Whichever way it went, he took it with his usual laid back sense. “But, don’t you want somepony like her? Whoa.. that came out wrong. I meant, if you were looking for a special somepony, would she be up for it?” Rainbow had grimaced at her first sentence, hastily rephrasing it in order not to make Cinder uncomfortable. “Now that you mention it Rainbow, yes she would,” he said matter-of-factly. “She’s a really pretty mare, and I think it would be awesome if she considered me “somepony” material as well.” Rainbow laughed for a second and turned to face Cinder, a look of amusement in her eyes. “You’re a hoot Cinder,” she said. “No wonder Flitter likes you". The colt followed Rainbow into the restaurant; where lively and ambient white noise met them. Server ponies were hurrying around, all the while the kitchen steamed of something that smelled really good. As Rainbow Dash and Cinder approached their table, Applejack glanced up and scooted over, allowing Cinder to slide into the booth next to her. The smell of the food was making him hungry, again, so he decided to order something anyway. “So Cinder,” a cheerful Applejack remarked as she turned her attention to him. “Ah haven’t heard much from Rainbow about you. What’s yer story bud?” Her emerald eyes were emblazed with interest and intrigue. Being a farm pony in Ponyville was an important job, especially being that summer was coming to a close and autumn was approaching. That meant the Harvest was coming around. “Well Applejack,” Cinder replied, taking a sip of water; “I’m from Las Pegasus, flew in a couple of days ago during that storm, and settled here in Ponyville to make it my new home. Simply put, I needed a fresh start. The big city was getting a bit annoying, and I guess now all I need to do is find a job,” he finished with a chuckle at his remark about Las Pegasus, which was entirely true. At the mention of the word “job” Applejack stiffened with a wide smile on her face. “Ya know.. We here at Sweet Apple Acres got the Harvest comin’ round soon, and we could use an extra pair of hooves and wings. Would make the chores of the day go a might faster.” “I’d be mighty thankful if you’d come work fer us on the farm,” she added. All eyes were on Cinder, as he took another sip of water. He didn’t expect a job offer to come up so quickly, but it was a job. And he always said If life hands you something, you’d best take it and run. “That sounds awesome, Applejack,” he quipped; “I’ve always wondered what it’s like being on a farm”. “Well shoot, we got us a deal! Follow me after we’re done here, and ah’ll give ya the rundown,” she said with another wide grin. And she right for doing so. Harvest season put a great strain on the local farms, from Ponyville to Appleoosa. Farmers needed all the help they could get, whether it be collecting the crops, applebucking the trees or just general maintenance and assistance. They ate in relative quietness unless Rarity gave some random gossip. Pinkie Pie was NOT there at their social gathering. Which was completely un like her. ______________________________________________________________________________ Applejack and Cinder trotted in step down the dirt path with each other toward Sweet Apple Acres. The group had each gone their separate ways after breakfast: Twilight returned to the library with Rarity and Rainbow Dash went off to go to work with the weather team, leaving Cinder with an entire day to follow Applejack and learn the ropes of the farm. His mind had been elsewhere as they continued along the path, past the school which was still in session. Rainbow Dash was right. Flitter was being really forward with him, and according to her sister, she was the direct opposite most of the time. I wonder what got into her.. “And here we are. Home sweet home,” a voice snapped Cinder out of his mobile daydream. He looked forward to see himself looking at a ranch, with a big red barn next to the farmhouse, with acres of apple trees surrounding it. He smiled slightly as Applejack went through her basic list of instructions for Cinder. “Basically, what ya’ll will be doin’ here is helpin’ me ahn Big Mac transport apple carts, and plow the fields. Not too much work right?” Her cheery demeanor was almost contagious, causing Cinder to smile even more. Finally, his little town life was complete. Now all he had to do was… “Hiya sis. Who’s yer friend?” Cinder looked up to see a massive red stallion with a girdle around his neck looking at the pair from the farmhouse. This was Big Macintosh. “Hey Mac, this is Cinder. He’s new in town and was lookin’ fer a job, an’ I know we need help out here, so I offered him a position to help you and me out!” Applejack almost jumped when she finished talking. Big Macintosh looked the ash colored colt. He saw a sleek, tone body with powerful wings and a mind that would not quit, even though he didn’t show it. “Well howdy, Cinder. Glad to have ya along. We need all’ the here help we can get,” the red stallion chortled walking back into the farm house. Applejack laughed heartily at Big Mac, then turned to Cinder. “We don’t start preparing for the Harvest until Saturday, so we’ll see ya bright and early here then!” “Right. I’ve gotta do my afternoon training as well. Cya!” Cinder turned and trotted off away from the farm oblivious that two pegasi ponies were hovering above, also oblivious to him. One was Rainbow Dash, the other was a yellow mare with a fiery mane and tail; none other than Spitfire. What the Captain of the Wonderbolts was doing in Ponyville was a mystery Unaware that their gaze had been shifted unto him, Cinder spread his wings and flew up to a nearby cloud to begin his practice. He took a couple extra minutes to stretch himself out before executing his rigorous workout plan: a one lap endurance race of Ponyville, while weaving in between buildings. He prepared himself for this extremely hard exercise. ________________________________________________________________________________ “So Dash, this new friend of yours, that him down there?” Spitfire motioned to the ash colored colt that was perched on the nearby cloud. Spitfire was regarded as one of the fastest flyers in Equestria, with a clocked wingpower of 16.9, slightly higher than Rainbow’s 16.5. Neither knew what Cinder’s number was, because no pony had bothered to clock him. “Yep, that’s him. The one time I saw him fly at speed, it was like nothing I’ve ever seen. He accelerated like…. Well a bullet. I think he’s going to do his workout now. This should be good.” All eyes were on the Pegasus now. _________________________________________________________________________________ Cinder closed his eyes, finished with his stretches and prepared to begin his workout. He was ready. He unfolded his wings and lifted himself into the sky, high above the cloud. As he did, he caught side of Rainbow and Spitfire, watching him. He smiled widely. Time to give a show that they’ll never forget. Reaching his free fall altitude, he closed his wings, flipped on his back, and let gravity take him. Freefalling was the best feeling he had ever experienced. The wind rushing through his mane until he reached terminal velocity, a cone forming around his body. At the perfect moment, he whipped his body around and opened his wings. With a huge CRACK that could have shattered the sky, he took the sharp turn as he shot through the sky faster than a bullet. He was moving so fast that he didn’t even see that Spitfire and Rainbow had moved, following him as best they could. But, all focus was forward. He saw Ponyville coming up fast, and his obstacle course was laid in front of him. Smiling widely, he pushed faster, the buildings rushing by faster and faster, until they were a blur. Looking behind him, he let out a yelp of excitement at what he saw: a vapor trail of black and white, traced in lightning was following him, from his tail. Turning his attention back to the Ponyville that was in front of him, he did not attempt to dodge any of the buildings. Rather, at a split second left, he pulled and rocketed into the sky, going completely vertical, the lateral G force tearing at his body. He pushed himself even farther, catching the rainbow mane of a certain mare, eyes glued to his move. Cinder let go of flying vertically and went into another free fall, this time slower than before, for he had four buildings to weave in between. He flipped his body around again, without the massive crack this time, and shot towards the buildings. He took them faster than he anticipated, pulling a barrel roll to avoid hitting a cart, and again pulling vertical after he cleared the buildings. Ponyville was far behind when he finally looked back, heading for the finish line, which was the same cloud he started on. Arcing slightly upwards, he felt the mach cone form around his body. It was only visible for a couple seconds, then dissipated as Cinder blew through the cloud, signaling the end of his workout. Spitfire and Rainbow Dash joined him shortly, Rainbow wearing a wide smug grin. Spitfire on the other hand was wide eyed in utter disbelief. Chapter IProlouge It was a dark and stormy evening when Cinder arrived in Ponyville. The wind was howling, trees shaking from its strength. Surely the weather ponies missed something. This storm was immense compared to most others. He glided down to the ground and trotted to a stop, folding his wings. Cinder looked around. All the windows were shut. All doors were closed. Guess it was what everypony did around here. He began to saunter down the street into the town square. No pony was here. Thunder clapped the night sky. It’s getting pretty bad, he thought. Time to find a place to stay. He glanced around then settled on a building with the name Ponyville Inn; Now offering apartments. He trotted off to the Inn to fetch himself a room. Ponyville was his new home after all. ________________________________________________________________________________________ Chapter 1: A New Beginning Cinder was awoken by his alarm clock at 8:30. He pulled aside his bedside curtain. Wow, what a beautiful day it was. Nothing like the night before. Everypony was out and about. He slid out his bedroom window, spreading his massive wings getting ready for his morning flight. After a quick shower and drying himself off, he took to the sky. His wings, almost bigger than him, flapped gently but strongly, propelling him through the sky. With the wind in his mane he felt happy. Happy to finally be on his own, and happy to have a new beginning. Glancing down at the ground, he smiled. Everypony must be busy with their lives today, he thought. And with good reason too. Everypony was out and about doing everything that needed to be done. He was hungry so he flew down to the Hayburger, a popular Ponyville hotspot. With that, his hooves made a soft thud on the ground, he folded his wings and went inside. Cinder wondered up to the counter and sat down at a stool. “What can I getcha, stranger?” A brown stallion with a tan mane was looking at him. Clearly he was the head chef at the Hayburger. The stallion smiled, “You’re not from ‘round here are you”. “Not really man. Flew in last night,” Cinder said. “Well try out the Hay Fries. Home speciality.” The brown stallion walked back into the kitchen to fetch Cinder his breakfast. Glancing around without moving his head, he didn’t see a lot of ponies in the restaurant. Maybe because it was too early. “Here ya go man. That’ll be 4 bits”. Cinder glanced up from the ground. He smiled, dug into his bag, and pulled out 5 bits. “Keep the change bro”. The brown stallion looked startled, but readily agreed to take the extra bit. “Hey you there!!” A loud, random voice, female, pierced the air around Cinder. He looked up to see a cyan colored mare with a rainbow mane and tail. Rainbow Dash tiled her head, still looking at him. “I haven’t seen you around here. Ya new," she asked The cyan mare batted her eyes twice, just a cutesy thing he guessed. “Yep I’m new. Flew in last night during that horrible storm," he replied, looking over the mare. Giggling at his wandering eyes, she drew a step closer. "What's your name?" “Cinder”. She smiled, almost excited in a way. It looked like she had never met another Pegasus quite like Cinder. “Sweet to meet you Cinder. What brings you to Ponyville?” The cyan mare hopped on the seat next to sky, spun around twice, then stopped, all eyes on him. Her eyes were a deep shade of magenta, he could have gotten lost in them if he had tried. She was a slender, but very strong mare, a very fast flyer from the looks of it. “Simply put, I needed to get away” he said. “A new beginning if you might”. “Ah ha. Well welcome to Ponyville! Always nice to have another flying buddy!” Her voice was cheerful and optimistic. Cinder finished his hay fries and threw the plate in the trash. “Well, I would say I have to get going. But I don’t know where to go, haha. What’s to do around here” he asked. The cyan mare smiled again, spread her wings and rose into the air. She looked at him differently than she did before. Her eyes looked Cinder over, mane to tail, almost looking for something. Her magenta eyes were a thing of sheer beauty, something Cinder was not used to. He never was a very social pony, often kept to himself and perched on top of clouds to pony watch and take naps. Cinder was an unusual looking colt to say the least. He was a little taller than Rainbow, as sleek and toned, except he sported an ash colored coat, with a fantastic black and white mane and tail. But his most striking feature was definitely his eyes. They were a dark crimson, almost a blood red, like something you would see from a deep cut. “C’mon, I’ll show you the town.” With that, the ash colt spread his wings as well, and the two of them took off into the warm mid morning light. Cinder followed Rainbow Dash around Ponyville, keeping a good distance from her. She was rambling off locations that weren’t much interest to him. He day dreamed and began to think about her. Ember. The mare of his dreams. The two had met at the Young Flyers Camp, and immediately fell in love. It was only recently that he had to leave her. Catching her in bed with another stallion was one of the most heartbreaking things he had ever had to endure. Almost killing himself, he resorted to avoiding all contact with other ponies. It was only recently that he decided to leave Las Pegasus. “And here we are” the cheerful cyan mare said. She looked back at the handsome young colt and smiled. He could tell she was clearly looking for something. Her gentle magenta eyes looked him over one last time, but when Cinder’s eyes caught hers, she blushed and turned away. “Anyway, only pegasi can reach this spot, so I guess it’s a little unfair but you get a pretty sweet view of the town from here…” Her voice trailed off, almost if she was lost in thought about something. She kept darting glances at the young colt, absorbing every detail of him, right down to the scar on his right wing. A smile made itself present on Cinder’s face, his deep red eyes glowing in the light, like ruby’s. He closed his eyes, letting the wind rush through his mane, and breathed in the fresh scent of something. He opened his eyes to see a very curious Rainbow Dash nuzzled up close to him. The mare giggled once she noticed he was aware of her. At first he was shocked, his eyes going wide with surprise. Afterwards, he was puzzled. “Aye what gives? You cold or something?” The cyan mare blushed heavily, and looked down at the cloud they sat on. “…You could say that. What, a friend can’t nuzzle a friend for warmth? We are up pretty high ya know..” It was clear to Cinder that something else was on her mind. But he wasn’t going to pry, even though it was incredibly obvious. A slight breeze wafted around them, causing her mane to fluff in his face. She laughed softly and smiled at him. Rainbow, Rainbow Rainbow. You’re making this way too obvious. But I’ll bite and play along. Cinder mused smiled to himself and thought of something else to say. “Got any more fun spots to show me?” She smiled and got up, her tail hitting him in the muzzle; softly though. She truly was a thing of beauty. It surprised him that she wasn’t already taken. “Not really, can’t think of any, haha….” She blushed again. It was becoming annoying at this point and Cinder wanted to move along. It’s not that he minded a beautiful mare flirting with him, but it was a bit much for his heart to take at that specific point. “Damn, well…. Umm… yeah heeheh..” Cinder giggled. He looked sheepishly at the cloud beneath their hooves, as if trying to find an excuse. Rainbow noticed this and silently took note. There was something brewing between those two. Something only time would reveal. Maybe it was friendship, maybe it was something more. Cinder closed his eyes again, feeling the cool wind wash through his mane. With the heat of the mare next to him and the contrasting coolness of the air, it made for an interesting sensation. He could feel his heart healing. It would be a long road. Half an hour passed as the two sat on that cloud, pony watching as they unaware went on with their lives. Everything was quiet on that cloud, except for Rainbow’s mind. She squeaked inside her head. He’s so cute, but there’s something off about him…. I can feel it. It’s not physical, but emotional. It sure feels like this guy got his heart hurt pretty bad. She felt strangely intelligent than her usual headstrongness. As she mused silently to herself, she felt Cinder shift his weight. She looked over to see the young colt cross his forelegs and rest his head on them. She smiled slightly. Another gentle breeze went between the two. “Hey Rainbow!!” A strong female voice sounded behind them. As she turned around she saw Cloudchaser, Flitter and Raindrops looking at her with puzzled looks on their faces. Cloudchaser was a lavender colored mare, slender build with a wildly styled mane. Her sister, Flitter was less flamboyant, as she seemed to have a quieter side. Raindrops was a pale yellow mare with a cyan mane and tail. Blushing heavily, Rainbow jumped up, stirring Cinder from his peace. “Oh uh hey guys! What are you doing here?” Rainbow looked sheepishly at Cinder looking for support, but she got none. Cinder smiled wryly and gave Rainbow a look out of the corner his eye. You’re on your own. “We were about to ask you the same….. oh hello… who’s your friend?” The tone in Cloudchaser’s voice changed from stern to flirtatious. “He your coltfriend? You got something to tell us Rainbow??” She raised a suspicious eyebrow as the rest of the pegasi giggled loudly. Rainbow again blushed. “WHAT. I was cold!.. Anyway. Everypony.. This is Cinder. He’s new to town.” At the mention of his name, Cinder got up, stretched and turned around to face the ponies. As soon as his eyes met Flitter’s, she looked away and blushed slightly. “Hey all. Nice to meet you”, Cinder said with a slight bow of his head. He surveyed the three mares that hovered in front of him. Raindrops was giving Cinder a hard look-over, not even trying to hide it. Her eyes looking over every detail as Cinder grinned stupidly. He could tell she was checking him over, it was all too obvious. Flitter let out a giggle. A loud shriek as she realized the time. “OH SNAP. Girls, we gotta go. Jobs start in 30 minutes.” Cloudchaser’s eyes widened in horror. “Awwww and was getting around to chatting with Rainbow’s new coltfriend” as she shot Rainbow a discerning wink. Rainbow remained quiet. “It’s nice to meet you Cinder. We should chill sometime,” the lavender mare said in a cute tone. It was clear she was trying to tell Cinder something. “Likewise girls. I actually gotta get going. It’s time for my afternoon flight. Catch ya later! Bye Flitter.” Flitter let out a surprised “EEP” as Cinder smiled gently at her. She in turn blushed heavily as smiled bleakly. “Later” Cinder said cooly. And with that he gave his trademark exit. Putting his forelegs close to his chest, he jumped off the cloud backwards, falling down. Closing his eyes, he waited for the right moment. Meanwhile above, a silence of shock washed over the four mares. They shot to the cloud with speed, to see Cinder falling like a rock to the earth. It was then Cinder opened his eyes. He extended his massive wings, twisted his body, and let out a loud “YAAAAAHHHHOOOOOO!!!” as he rocketed into the sky, riding a thermal current, a shimmering, almost with an electricity to it, vapor trail of black and white following him, much like Rainbow had a rainbow form around her when she got going really fast. He shot away from the four mares like a bullet and before they knew it, he had banked right and headed away from Ponyville. It took the girls a full minute to realize what had just happened. Slowly taking it all in, Rainbow was the first to speak surprisingly. “Ok.. what just.. happened” she said with a touch of worry in her voice. She received mixed looks from the other three. “My guess is as good as yours Rainbow, but dear Celestia you sure know how to pick ‘em” Cloudchaser said with a giggle. The other two mares joined in the brief laugh as Rainbow blushed heavily and looking away. “He’s cute…” said a resounding voice from Flitter. Her cheeks were a rosy red and her wings were a bit erratic. “I mean… did you see how he just shot away like a bullet? I’ve never seen such speed besides Rainbow.” “To be honest Flitt, neither have it. That’s the first time I’ve seen him fly at speed like that. And I have to say girls… I’m shocked. Never seen a pony exit that way, never seen of such acceleration.. He’s fast all right, but I wanna put that to the test” Rainbow’s voice was sturdy but Flitter saw the emotion in it. The other three mares looked at Rainbow, with only possible outcome. She was going to race him. “We should go” said Raindrops. She had been quiet after examining Cinder thoroughly. With that, the four mares turned and flew towards their job. Only Flitter hung back a bit. Cinder…… something is off about you… ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ It was only after Cinder knew he was out of Ponyville did he perch on a cloud and take a breath. His exit was more flamboyant than usual, as was trying to show off for the mares, especially Cloudchaser and Flitter. Something pinged inside Cinder’s head as he circled around the outskirts of Ponyville, while he adjusted his speed to just under his cruising speed. Something clicked in his head when he thought about Flitter. He continued on his flight path, almost silently gliding over Ponyville, riding different wind currents as he went. He glanced up at the cloud where the mares were just leaving. He decided he was going to “covertly” pull a flyby. With that, he gave a solid push from his wings which sent him flying upward. He smiled inward as he shot upward to the mares. Rainbow was out in front, with a bit of a lead. “Hiya Rainbow!!” a voice from a familiar colt rang out. Cloudchaser and Flitter froze, but Rainbow smiled, laughed and not even bothering to turn around called out to him. “What’s good Cinder. That was a short flight.” “Hehe, yeah. I don’t really know the skies over Ponyville yet, as I’ve yet to map it out, so I took it slow” the young colt said, pulling parallel with the cyan mare. The wind was a gentle gust as the five flew off. Rainbow and Cinder were in the lead, with Cloudchaser, Flitter and Raindrops closely behind. “Now’s your chance Flitter, go get near him! We all know you already have a crush on him” Cloudchaser said with a bat of her wing at her sister. A slight “eep” slipped from Flitters lips as she looked up at Cinder and Rainbow. What they were talking about was inaudible but she could make out a few words. “So… that Flitter girl. What’s she about?” Cinder asked with an unusually peppy purring to his voice. He hadn’t been interested in mares recently, as to the fact with Ember. However, that was almost a year ago, and he felt his heart starting to heal, so it was worth a shot. Rainbow paused for a second then a response came shortly after. “Awwww Cinder, you got a crush on her don’t you..” “Noooo… ok well maybe. But I’ve only met her once. Yeesh, I’m not that kind of colt” he said to Rainbow batting his right wing playfully at her. Flitter and Cloudchaser caught onto that motion, keying into that they were joking around. “I know I know. But I’m just saying, she quite attractive Cinder. And I think she likes you, judging from how closely she and Cloudchaser are following” Rainbow said with an evil snicker. Cinder chuckled silently to himself, musing about what he just heard. “What you two talking about?” said a cheerful Cloudchaser as she pulled next to Rainbow Dash, slyly allowing Flitter to pull next to Cinder. Cinder did not let that subtly go unnoticed. He smiled halfway to himself. So this is what it feels like… Ponyfeathers I’ve been missing out. “Oh nothing. Just idle chatting, trying to get Cinder here used to Ponyville. It is his new home after all” Rainbow said with a sly wink towards the ash colored colt. The five continued to fly towards their destination, in a line 5x1. Only Raindrops held back slightly, her eyes still going over Cinder's figure. “So Cinder, what was that little display about back at the cloud? Never seen a pony fly like you” Cloudchaser piped up. “Yeah” added Rainbow. “I’d like to know too. “Me too…” Flitters voice was almost inaudible. Cinder looked down as the group was flying past them. “That wasn’t anything girls. Just a little thing I do sometimes… hehe” he grinned nervously. “Sorry if I scared you girls.” “Nah it’s cool. I thought it was pretty sweet actually. Does it have a name?” With that question, Cinder faltered almost not answering. “Actually, ya know it’s quite funny. I’ve never thought of a name for that trick. It’s just a thing I do sometimes when I’m feeling…..feisty." Damn it He immediately regretted saying that as a resounding flirtatious giggle arose from the mares. “Oh really, so you were just showing off for us? I can’t say we didn’t enjoy it” Cloudchaser said, flashing Cinder with a playful wink. She barrel rolled in between him and Rainbow, sitting comfortably within his personal zone. He knew she did this on purpose, but took it no more than a mare being frisky with a newcomer. Flitter giggled as she took her queue from Cloudchaser, moving in closer to Cinder slightly. Rainbow, Rainbow, Rainbow. You have some interesting friends, he mused to himself, smiling at the sudden turn of events. They had finally arrived at their destination, the Ponyville Weather Control Center. Cloudchaser, Raindrops and Rainbow Dash walked up to the building then stopped to turn around. “I’ll be home late tonight Flitter. Don’t do anything foolish now” as she caught her standing close to Cinder. She wasn’t going to say anything, but caught Flitter’s eye as she stopped looking the colt over herself. It was clearly obvious that she was showing interest in Cinder. “I’ll be off later tonight as well Cinder, but we should like totally hang out or something! Maybe hit the bar. Wait… do you drink?” The cyan mare lifted a quizzical eyebrow as she awaited the colt’s response. He shrugged. “Eh, only sometimes. I really don’t like the feeling of being drunk. Makes me feel like I’m of control of myself.” His reaction caused Flitter to pass him a glace. Wow, this colt really has his head on straight. Maybe I should hang around him more. “Gotta go you two. Don’t have too much fun” Cloudchaser said as she flashed her sister yet another playful wink. The three mares left the two alone outside, with an awkward silence following. The normally quiet Flitter was the one to break the silence. “So…Cinder.” “Yeah?” “Ummm… do you wanna… hang out or something? Cloudy won’t be home till almost midnight, and I got nothing to do…..” It was 2pm in the afternoon, realizing it now, he could use some company. Having no idea what to do he didn't shrug like he wanted to but offered a simple “Sure”. The lavender mare’s eyes lit up and she drew herself closer still to Cinder, this time with her wing touching his, in fact she was almost standing on his hooves. She giggled softly, and pawed the ground in front of her, but that wasn’t for long until she was caught by Cinder’s affectionate gaze. His deep crimson eyes locking onto hers, they almost entered a state of bliss as the two’s heads grew closer together, to the point where their muzzles were almost touching. Flitter was being unusually forward with Cinder. She was usually the type of mare that waited for the colt to the first move, but Cinder was special she thought to herself. She then realized how close she was to him and pulled herself away. “Oh my goodness, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to get that close to you” she said, a full blown red blush on her face. Her intentions were all too clear now, and Cinder knew it. “It’s fine Flitter. I actually enjoyed it. You have really pretty eyes.” “Thanks Cinder…” The answer was almost instantaneous. And with that he had himself a transfixed mare staring into his eyes. She bit her bottom lip as she continued to stare at his form. “Shall we take this elsewhere?” she motioned with a flick of her tail, brushing it against Cinder’s nose. At first, Cinder didn't know what to do, blinking twice. He had a beautiful mare standing in front of her, with her full attention on him. This had happened only one time before. But for some strange reason he trusted her. With that, he made his move. Bending his neck slightly, he nuzzled her cheek, which resulted in a stifled “EEP” from Flitter. Her face almost burning bright red when she turned to face Cinder head on, muzzle to muzzle. “Let’s go” he said with a smile. And with that they took off into the afternoon sky. ________________________________________________ “I sure hope you know what you’re doing, Cloudy” Rainbow said as she huffed a cloud around. Cloudchaser looked back at Rainbow as she kicked another cloud into place. “Flitter has been cooped up for too long Dash. She needs to find herself a colt and trust me when I say that. But I think this Cinder guy is a good match for her. I’ve been watching them and Flitter’s little “invasion” maneuver. He hasn't tried to kiss her or anything, which earns part of my check..” “I don’t like him” retorted a rather huffy looking Raindrops, as she milked a cloud for its moisture. “Something just doesn't sit right about him with me.” “Whatever do you mean” Cloudchaser said darting to her. “I’ve been through my fair share of colts and I can tell a good honest one at length. This Cinder has yet to earn my trust with Flitter fully, but he’s off to a good start”. A sullen Raindrops muttered something inaudible to herself as she continued her work silently. Rainbow Dash and Cloudchaser giggled, when one of them caught the eye of Cinder and Flitter ascending to a cloud not too far away. At first, Cloudchaser’s heart melt. Finally her sister was able to feel comfortable enough around a colt that she was actually hanging out with him. “D’awwww look at that, Dash. See? What I tell ya”. The cyan mare glanced over, forcing a double take at what she saw. What she saw was awe inspiring. A brand new colt that had just arrived in Ponyville the night before was already making friends and already had his first crush. Smirking, Rainbow herded yet another cloud into the designated area. “Hehe, you sure got a way with your magic, Cloudy. It would do them both some good,” Rainbow said smiling as she chased after three rouge clouds. Chapter IVChapter IV: Timeless Cinder was breathing heavily, resting on a nearby cloud. The workout really was intense, designed by Cinder himself. His goal by creating this type of workout was to blend all the aspects of extreme high speed flying into one, thus creating this custom regiment. Glancing to his right, he saw Rainbow Dash and Spitfire flying over to the exhausted Pegasus, eyes wide with excitement. As Cinder caught his breath, Rainbow was the first to break the silence. “Holy crap Cinder, I had no idea you could fly like that!,” she exclaimed. Even Spitfire looked a bit impressed, after all, anypony would be impressed to see another pull a 70 degree turn at subsonic speeds. The yellow mare was carefully studying Cinder’s physique, from his wings to his legs and posture. Not a detail was missed by the fiery mare. “I found your flight path quite interesting uhm…. Cinder is it? Could you please explain the details to me.” The fiery mare turned her attention directly to Cinder’s eyes, which were glowing in the afternoon light. “Yes Ma’am that’s correct. It’s actually quite easy to understand if given an in depth enough explanation. I simply look farther ahead while monitoring my sides, therefore I have greater awareness of my surroundings. And at the speeds I’m travelling, it helps quite a bit. I don’t have an exact estimate of what I’m traveling at, but I guess it’s close to the sound barrier, because when I free fall and pull later than I should, I hear that crack.” Cinder said with a sheepish grin. Spitfire gave a nod, seeming to understand exactly what Cinder had said. Turning to depart she gave a glance at Rainbow Dash, adding “I’ll see to it that the rest of the Wonderbolts are aware of the situation, Dash. Thanks for bringing it up.” And with that, she took to the sky, soaring back to Cloudsdale at incredible speeds. Once she was out of earshot, Rainbow broke the silence between them. “Wow Cinder.. I uh.. had no idea you could fly like that. I thought you were just showing off for us that first time,” she said meekly, a slight blush running across her face. She glanced down at the ground below them, a soft breeze running through her mane. Geez, Cinder mused to himself as he eyed the weather pony. I had no idea a Wonderbolt would be interested in my tricks, let alone the captain. But that’s beside the point. It’s time I go to Applejack’s for work today. ____________________________________________________________________________________ *Two Weeks Later* ____________________________________________________________________________________ Cinder walked away from Sweet Apple Acres with the sun setting in the background after a hard day’s work, the sweat dripping down his mane and into his face. He was exhausted, but it was good honest work that was hard to find nowadays, especially with the harvest coming up. He continued to walk along the white picket fence that led into Ponyville. The air smelt of apple cider and campfires, the smells and sounds of a waning summer. The feel of Ponyville was SO much better than Los Pegasus’ was. The big city felt cramped and mechanical, all ponies ever cared about was getting rich and money. Here in Ponyville, everypony just cared about making friends and living to be happy. And that’s all Cinder wanted out of life. His thoughts were cut short by an abrupt question from a familiar voice. “So, how are you and Flitter doing currently?” Rainbow Dash dropped out of the sky and landed right in front of the young colt. Her voice was filled with intrigue and interest. While Rainbow had shown to be very flirty with Cinder when they first met, he could tell that she had backed off and, silently, decided that it would be better to have the colt as a friend. He could understand her decision. Gathering his thoughts from the distant corners of Ponyville, he came to a decision. “Well Rainbow,” he remarked, taking a slight pause afterwards. “Luna visited me a couple weeks ago and she told me it’s best for me to trust my heart, since she…uhm.. knows about my past,” he said very cooly. He wasn’t afraid to openly admit it anymore, as he decided to move forward and settle down. Finally. “By the way,” he added. “Have you seen Flitter today?” Cinder tilted his head slightly to the right, looking quizzically at the mare in front of him. She retorted by smiling. “Actually yeah I have, she said dryly, “I saw her heading to Whitetail Wood.” Whitetail Wood was on the far side of Ponyville. It was a known spot for the Running Of The Leaves and other things having to do with romance. What she was doing there, he had no idea. But he planned to find out. ________________________________________________________________________________ “So Flitter, Rainbow and I can see that your feelings for Cinder are getting ahead of you,” a confident Cloudchaser said as her and her little sister trotted through Whitetail Wood. Cloudchaser had brought Flitter there to clear her head, and finally get some reason into it. “I know I know sis,” she replied, a heavy blush on her muzzle. “It’s just, he’s so cute and awesome. And I don’t wanna let him find another pony… erm.. I mean become interested in somepony else.” “Sis, he’s a good match for you, but you can’t rush it. These things take time. And he’s new in town, so you’ve gotta allow for that. And also, you need to determine if this is just a hard hitting crush, or these are true, legit feelings,” her elder sister lectured on. “Trust me when I say this Flitter, no offense to you at all, but if you act on a crush, it’ll often end with heartbreak,” the lavender mare explained, with concern in her voice. She just wanted her sister to be happy. Maybe I should talk to Cinder¸ she mused silently to herself. She stopped trotting, along with Flitter and gave a gentle nuzzle at her sister. What Cloudchaser said was true. Crushes rarely ended well, and she was just trying to protect her little sister. “Ok Flitter, answer me this. How often do you think about him?” “Uhm.. most of the time.” “Do you dream about him?” “……..yeah.” Do you feel warm and fuzzy when you were with him?” “Yes…..” Cloudchaser uttered a hearty laugh, putting a hoof on her sister’s shoulder. “Sis, you got it bad. And I mean bad.” Cloudchaser was right. Was this a hard hitting crush, or were these feelings something more? ________________________________________________________________________________ “Now Cinder I need to chat with you as well,” the cyan mare adjacent to Cinder said. Her demeanor was cheery but serious at the same time. It was obvious that something was on her mind, and she intended to speak it. They were nearing Whitetail Wood, the gorgeous woods coming into view. The pegasi landed just outside the woods when Rainbow Dash stopped Cinder, looking him dead in the eye. Her intentions were cloudy at best, however the ash colored colt had a sneaking hunch of what is was. A breeze blew through the woods, rustling the trees gently. Rainbow’s mane was caught in that breeze, Cinder’s gaze transfixed on her. “So this is going to sound awkward, what are your feelings towards Flitter?” The question was blunt and caught Cinder off guard. He was expecting something along the lines of flying. However, the ash colored colt knew exactly what his answer was going to be. “You are asking me if I have just a simple crush on her, or if it’s something more,” he said cooly. “Aren’t you Rainbow?” The cyan mare standing opposite to him tilted her head slightly to the right, eyes gazing at Cinder’s. She smiled, and walked around him until she was at his side. “That’s exactly what I’m asking. What’s your take on it? I already know Flitter’s opinion.” The mare in front of Cinder was eagerly awaiting his answer, her tail swishing from side to side. “To be completely honest with you Rainbow, I think I like her, ya know… more than a crush,” the colt finally said, after a long pause of silent thinking. He was aware of his feelings for Flitter when they were sitting on the bench together. And when they parted ways he felt like he was missing something. Seeing as Rainbow wasn’t saying anything, just giving him a quizzical look, he failed to hold a chuckle in. “However…. She’s going a bit fast for my taste, but if she slows down, it’s almost certain that we will be together in the near future,” he added. Not receiving a reply from the mare, but rather a quizzical look, he chuckled. “Oh Rainbow, you can read me like a book can’t you,” he chortled with a dry smile on his face. Rainbow responded by smiling and saying “Oh yeah. Cloudy and I could already tell when you were all snuggled up together. You kept glancing around making sure she was all yours,” she replied. Rainbow motioned for them to enter Whitetail Wood, which Cinder readily agreed to. As the two pegasi trotted through the beautiful woodland, their manes rustling with the summer wind that blew through them. It was truly a beautiful sight to behold. Rainbow and Cinder were not aware that Flitter and Cloudchaser were nearby, discussing the same mater. The two would be meeting in the most awkward of situations. ________________________________________________________________________ The four pegasi met in a clearing. When Flitter first saw Cinder, she checked herself over, making sure that her mane and tail were in shape, and that her wings were freshly preened. Seeing that she was to her standard, the colt and the mare neared closer. Soon a voice sounded on the wind. “Hiya Cloudy! Hey Flit!” None other than Rainbow. The cyan mare was happily trotting up the hill where the other two pegasi were waiting, with Cinder in tow behind. Flitter’s heart beat faster when she saw him. Cloudchaser was right. She did feel happier when they were together. She couldn’t take her eyes off him, and when his crimson eyes met her, both their faces blushed, Flitter looking away with a goofy giggle. The four met on that hill outside Whitetail Wood with that same summer breeze blowing through their manes. “Hey Rainbow, Cinder! What’s good guys,” the cheerful Cloudchaser asked. “Gotten into trouble lately?” “Actually, no. Not recently at least, ehe,” Rainbow retorted. “Hiya Flitter. What’s up?” Cinder was looking directly at her, catching Rainbow off guard. She smiled dryly, and playfully batted Cinder’s back with her right hoof. Her look in her eyes was mischievous, friendly and welcoming. Cinder started to trot towards Cloudchaser and Flitter, with Cloudchaser flying over him, flashing him a smile out of the corner of his eye. They knew what to do. As he got closer to Flitter, he could not hear Rainbow and Cloudchaser behind him, perhaps they had moved away. It didn’t matter now. All that mattered now is that he was with Flitter. Oh boy. Should I tell her my feelings? It’s been two weeks since we first hung out in two weeks. “Hi Cinder,” she said meekly, her wings stiff at her sides. “How have you been?” The mare was gazing deep into Cinder’s crimson eyes, lost in their trance. Unaware that the other two mares had gone, the two stood there in a few more moments of silence before Cinder motioned for them to walk. “Oh, I’ve been settling in just fine. What have you been up to? I haven’t seen you in two weeks,” Cinder said sheepishly with a warm grin spread across his face. It had been a long time, two weeks, since the two had spent time together. Although, it was not all bad. It gave Cinder time to consider his feelings for Flitter, even when he was at his welcome party Pinkie Pie threw for him a week ago. She smiled widely, still gazing into his eyes. “I’ve been in Cloudsdale most of the time. I’ve been taking an advanced weather class because I wanted to earn more money than I was. Anyway, enough about me, what have you been up to… and I’ve missed you.” Her voice was eager, optimistic and even a bit flirtatious. She took a step closer to Cinder, looked up at his eyes one more time, and proceeded to gently nuzzle him on his neck. The colt froze. She was literally nose to nose with him, feeling her gentle breath graze against his skin. He leaned forward in response, pressing his forehead against hers, their manes blowing in front of their eyes. Neither pony said anything, but it was louder than words. The stillness around them was engulfing, totally all consuming, as both ponies got lost in the other’s eyes. Then it happened. Flitter had a slight smile across her face, closed her eyes, and gently pressed her lips against Cinder’s. The young colt’s wings went stiff, startled by her sudden advance, but later relaxing and returning the kiss. Time seemed to stand still for those few seconds, all other thoughts were cast to the wind as his mind’s entire attention was focused on the mare in front of him. He understood completely what had just happened. With that one kiss, she gave her entire trust to him, only hoping that he would return it. And that he did. He felt her bite down on his lower lip gently, a sign of deep affection and love. Love. How long had Cinder run away from that word. He had forgotten what it meant to love, to have somepony that you trusted with your deepest secrets, who you ran to when you needed a shoulder to cry on… who you considered special. The colt pulled back first, breaking their lips embrace. Flitter kept her eyes closed for a second longer, finally opening them, biting her lower lip gently. Their silence continued, both at a loss for words. Cinder made the next move. Gently putting his right hoof behind her neck, he pulled her close to him, their bodies so close they could feel the gentle rise and fall of each other’s chest. The long silence that had held the pair in its grip was broken with Flitter’s voice. “I….. I love you, Cinder… Will you be my special somepony?” Her voice was so gentle and affectionate, practically forced Cinder’s face into a smile. He felt his heart skip several beat, finally it was alive after so long. “I love you too, Flitter. And of course I will,” and with those words he pulled her in for another tight hug, their heads resting on each other’s backs. For that time, Cinder truly felt happy. The ash colored colt felt like he could trust this mare with his heart. They held their embrace until the sound of hooves clapping sounded above and behind them. Rainbow Dash and Cloudchaser were hovering above them, wide grins on their faces. “Congrats Sis,” Cloudchaser said as she descended to meet her sister with another hug. Flitter returned it, as equally if not more so than when she had hugged Cinder. The colt caught a fading glance at a stray tear running down her cheek, but decided not to comment on it, because his full attention was on his new marefriend. Just shortly after, he felt a hoof on his back. Turning to his left he saw Rainbow Dash smiling. They exchanged a quick hug and trotted up to meet the other two mares at the half way point on the hill. Flitter was glowing with pride as she raced to meet her coltfriend. Cloudchaser and Rainbow Dash giggled at the cuteness of it all. The sun was starting to set as the group finally made it back to Ponyville, Flitter closely at Cinder’s side. Rainbow and Cloudchaser were slightly ahead of the couple, enough for them to be out of earshot. The two exchanged a silent glance of satisfaction as they walked towards the center of Ponyville. “Heh, I knew it was in his heart,” said Cloudchaser, as she bounced along the road, her joy all too obvious. Rainbow Dash was keeping a more subdued appearance, but inside she was boiling with excitement. She didn’t have time to reply, since the group had made it to their destination. A fly-in movie theater in the center of Ponyville. The projector cloth was draped over the town hall and was fastened in place by magical pins, that wouldn’t make it sway with the wind. The group settled down in the grass, Cinder and Flitter nuzzled up close and enjoyed the show. _____________________________________________________________________________________ About an hour into the film, Cinder looked to his right to see Flitter asleep at his side, hooves stretched out. Careful as not to wake her up, he gently extended his right wing, and let it fall over his marefriend. A Pegasus doing this was a display of deep affection and love, not frowned upon in public like preening was. Sensing the new comfort from her coltfriend, Flitter wiggled in closer, resting her head under Cinder’s. Smiling to himself and closing his eyes for a brief moment, he looked to his left to see Rainbow Dash and Cloudchaser laughing their tails off at the movie, their mouths wide with grins of enjoyment. Looking to his right, he saw The Cutie Mar Crusaders nestled together, watching the movie intently. Well, two were. An orange filly with a purple mane had no interest in it. She reminded him of Rainbow, much more stallionesque than marelike. They had been at Cinder’s welcome party, bouncing around him asking how he got his cutie mark. Truth is, he was a blank flank when he first arrived in Ponyville. Looking straight ahead he saw the other ponies he had met earlier. Twilight, Rarity, Applejack, Fluttershy and Spike were all sitting together watching the movie as well. He looked off to his slight left to see two mares, one mint green, one tan sitting together, enjoying each other’s company and watching the movie intently. To his slight right, he saw a group of other ponies he didn't know enjoying the movie and chatting among themselves It was then that it dawned on Cinder. This is where I belong… He looked down to see the sleeping mare in his arms, head resting below his, with his wing over her body. He truly felt like he was right where he deserved to be. The movie droned on. The ash colored colt was slowly losing interest in it, until he as snapped out of his daze by playful bop on his nose. He looked down to see his marefriend, grinning goofily up at him, her eyes filled with stars once again. As he leaned down for another quick kiss, it suddenly dawned on him. Stars…… They had guided him to his destiny… He heard a gasp coming from The Cutie Mar Crusaders as well as Rainbow Dash and Cloudchaser. Not wanting to disturb Flitter, who had fallen back asleep, he looked over at Rainbow. “What is it?” “Check your flank.” He froze, eyes going wide with the sudden realization. He carefully turned his head to his flank, and gasped himself at what he saw. Two lightning bolts crossed unto each other had been emblazed on his flank, forming an abstract star. His eyes lit up with excitement as his subtle movements stirred Flitter awake. She let out an excited yelp when she saw that her coltfriend had finally gotten his cutie mark. Touching his face with her hoof she smiled as she slid in for the kiss. “It’s true what they say. Now you’re even cuter,” she said nose to nose with her coltfriend. They exchanged a nuzzle and settled back down for the rest of the movie, and Cinder could not have been any happier than he was at that very moment. He was surrounded by friends, found a new home and even found love once more. And this time, he was never letting go. ________________________________________________________________________________________ FIN EpilogueSpitfire landed outside the Wonderbolt's headquarters in Cloudsdale, a massive complex with build in training facility. As she walked along the cloud street, the heavy breeze rustling her fiery mane, she couldn't help but smile to herself. In all her years of being Captain she had only seen a few pegasi that stood out among the rest. One being a certain rainbow mane'd mare from Ponyville, among others. Pegasi of all colors and sizes were whizzing around her, performing fantastic areal feats. Spitfire wan't interested in that though. The Wonderbolts had received so many applications since two of their members had been forced to retire: one due to massive scandal and the other due to old age. Even Rainbow Dash applied, hoof delivering her application to Spitfire. The yellow mare failed to withhold a chuckle as she entered her office. Oh Rainbow, don't you know you're already on the waiting list? Now... about your friend..... Her musing was interrupted by a solid knock at her door. "Enter," she said in her professional stern voice. Few ponies knew that Spitfire knew that she had a affectionate, caring side that she rarely showed. The colt who entered was Soarin', another Wonderbolt. His pale blue body was tuned to absolute peak physical form, not a shred of body fat on him. His dark blue monotone mane was blown back like Spitfire's was from constant high speed flying. "You wanted to me, Spitfire?" "Yes, I did. I seem to have found a pony that definitely stands out among the rest. And I think he might be able to take that Ol' Geezer's spot." Spitfire's face was completely seriously, but Soarin' caught a flicker of cunning in her orange eyes. He smiled slyly, knowing exactly where she was going with this. He stood at attention as she walked past him. "When do we leave ma'am," he said, body rigid. Just then, a pale green mare stood behind Soarin'. Her orange and yellow mane brushed with perfection, her body tuned to perfection. Spitfire turned to face Lightning Dust and Soarin'. "We don't leave. We start our plan starting next month," she said. A wide, mischievous grin spread across her lips. Both ponies looked at each, smiled widely and followed Spitfire out of her office, and into the training facility of Cloudsdale. It's coming together so nicely........
Chapter IIChapter 2: Taking It to Heart Upon reaching the cloud in question, which was big enough for Cinder and Flitter to comfortably sit on, they positioned themselves so that they had a perfect point of view of all of Ponyville.
________________________________________________________________________________________ FIN
EpilogueSpitfire landed outside the Wonderbolt's headquarters in Cloudsdale, a massive complex with build in training facility.
