Chapters Stars and moons gleamed brightly this midnight. Not a single cloud marred the sky's beauty. Below, people lived in harmony in the valley. However, this harmony was only a pretense.
Princess Twilight stood on a balcony of Twilight Castle. Sighing, Twilight headed inside. Twilight sat down at a table upon which rested a large book, quill, and ink vial. Opening the book, Twilight dipped the quill and began to write.
Why has this disaster befallen us? Why do the Griffons seek to do us harm? We have not insulted the Griffon's precious honor, nor have we wronged them in any way. I only wish for all this to end, and so do the other princesses. Tomorrow, I leave to bring peace to Equestria and negotiate with the Griffons. May Celestia guide me...
~Twilight, 15th of May, 6 LR (AUTHORS NOTE: 6 years after Luna's Return. AKA 1005 AL, 1005 years after her banishment).
Twilight placed down the quill and got up from the chair. Walking to the bed, Twilight flopped down on the bed and drifted to sleep.
~~~
A knock at the door awoke Twilight. "Twilight, it's time to get ready for the journey to Gryphus," a feminine voice called.
"Come in, Viridian," Twilight responded.
Twilight's maid entered from a side-room. Twilight originally objected to having a maid assigned to her, but Viridian Silk was a good companion to have in the bores of court life. Walking to the wardrobe, Viridian opened it and pulled out one of the gowns that Rarity had made for Twilight. The gown was lavish, having actual amethyst gemstones lining the collar.
"Twilight, what do you think about this one?" Viridian asked.
"The dress is fine, but this is a diplomatic mission. Maybe something less flashy?" Twilight asked.
"I guess you're right," Viridian pouted. Reaching further into the wardrobe, Viridian pulled out a simple amethyst dress with highlights of grey at the edges.
"How about this?"
"That will be excellent."
As Viridian helped Twilight into the dress, she asked, "What do you think the King will be like?"
"A royal pain," Twilight joked.
"No, seriously."
"Counter-productive to the goal of peace. Essentially, a royal pain." To this, Viridian laughed. As suddenly as Viridian laughed she stopped. The humor faded from both of their faces as the seriousness of the subject reared its ugly head.
"I hope this war stops soon," Viridian wondered aloud.
"So do I. So does the rest of Equestria."
Another knock was heard from the hallway door.
"Come in," said Twilight. Flash Sentry walked in, and bowed when he neared Twilight. He held the bow for a few moments, and then rose to speak to Twilight.
"Your Highness, the escort is ready and awaiting your command," Flash informed.
"Thank you. Tell them I shall arrive soon," Twilight commanded. Flash briskly turned and marched towards the courtyard.
Viridian sighed, and then looked at Twilight. Twilight was all too familiar with that look.
"Viridian, we've gone over this before, haven't we? I do not feel any attraction towards Captain Sentry," Twilight perfunctorily answered.
"Nothing at all? Not even a twinge of attraction?"
"No. I have to focus on other things besides stallions. As a princess, the weight of Equestria is on my back. A relationship would come as a distraction to my royal duties. I will not accept failure," responded Twilight mechanically.
"I'll have to call you Death from now on, seeing how serious you are," Viridian joked.
Twilight sighed and headed out the room into the hallway. Viridian followed. Guards stopped and saluted as Twilight passed. Acknowledging the guards with a nod, the pair moved onward, and eventually reached the courtyard.
Waiting in the courtyard for them was a closed carriage, similar to the one used by Celestia. Surrounding the carriage were the Twilight Guards, proficient in using and combating magic.
Flash Sentry, noticed Twilight and strode towards her.
"We are ready to depart Your Highness."
"Good. We depart for Gryphus immediately." In response, Flash Sentry turned about face.
"FORM UP! We depart to Gryphus. Her Highness must be protected at all costs! Move!" Flash ordered.
As the Guard got into formation, Twilight and Viridian entered the carriage. Once properly seated, the carriage rumbled and began to move. Viridian crocheted, and Twilight picked up a timeworn book left in the carriage. Twilight read deeper into the diary of the royal sisters. Their past had provided many laughs and insights.
~~~ A Few Hours Later
Luna seems to be writing about a particular man. It seems he was an influential lord. But his name is missing. Wherever his name is, it has been magically removed and censored. She did give a physical description though. Let me see... ah yes, it's down here. Tall, dark-haired, piercing green eyes, and... an alicorn?
Twilight did a double take, drawing the attention of Viridian.
"What's wrong Twilight?" Viridian asked.
"Nothing Viridian. It's fine," replied Twilight. Viridian gave a doubtful glance and continued to crotchet.
How can this be? The only alicorn are those from royalty. In fact, I have never heard of a male alicorn. Still, there is the possibility that there were male alicorn. This requires more reading and research. The absence of a name will prove extremely detrimental to my efforts.
Twilight flipped the pages madly, desperate to unravel the mystery of Luna's lover. More than once, Viridian shot concerned looks at Twilight. However, she didn't say a word, used to Twilight's episodes.
This is a diary. Not all ponies leave everything for others to plainly read and see. Celestia and Luna would have hidden the most private of information. Maybe if I looked for a keyword, or a phrase, something that would hint at a code, anything!
Twilight let out a groan, too low for Viridian to hear, when it came to her.
This diary is written in ink! Some use invisible ink to hide their true message!
"Viridian, blind the windows please," Twilight asked hurriedly. Viridian closed the blinds as asked, uncertain of what Twilight had in mind.
Twilight focused ley energy into her horn, casting a purple light on the diary's pages. With the light, Twilight probed the fading and yellowing sheets. Lo and behold, under the light, a single word appeared on the edge of the page.
bamroS . Twilight banged her head on the back of her seat in frustration.
Why is this so difficult? Why did Luna go so far to hide the name of her lover?
"Twilight, I think you should rest for a bit. That book is really getting to you," Viridian suggested.
"That's a good idea. Maybe the answers will come to me then," said Twilight.
Viridian rolled her eyes and continued crocheting. Twilight closed the book, set it aside, and leaned back. Twilight let the rocking carriage lull her into sleep....
Twilight found herself in a dreamscape. The landscape was surreal, unrealistic, and shrouded in a heavy blue mist. In front of her stood a blue alicorn, wearing royal regalia. To either side of the Princess of Night stood a Noctral.
"One should not worm their way into the personal business of others," Luna stated.
"Who is the stallion you are writing about?" Twilight asked anyways.
"That does not concern thou. He is long dead to the world," Luna answered.
"I will figure this out eventually, Luna. Please -"
"SILENCE! I forbid thee from pursuing this topic further! Only pain and heartbreak can be found by following the path thou have chosen!"
"What is so wrong about this stallion? What could he possibly have done?"
"He ruined his own life and the lives of others by pursuing the dark arts! For that, I have decided to eradicate all reference or memory of him!"
"Eradicated everything except the vague reference of his name! Some part of you still loves him. Who was he?"
"I leave the vague reference so that I remember to never repeat the same mistake again," Luna countered.
"What is that mistake? If I don't know the mistake, what is to prevent me from making the same mistake you did, now that I am a princess?"
"Does thou not remember their problem of time travel? Thou committed the mistake in the act of attempting to prevent the mistake," Luna reminded. Twilight did remember, as it resurfaced in her dreams from time to time. She visibly winced.
"Thou would do your best to leave this fruitless search alone. I would prefer thee did not have to carry the same burdens I do today," Luna warned softly. Luna and the two Noctrals turned and walked off into the mist.
Twilight stood alone.
"Twilight! Twilight!" a voice called. Twilight bolted to her feet.
What? Who?
"WAKE UP!" came the voice again, penetrating the encroaching mist.
Viridian! Twilight ran towards the maid's voice.
Twilight awoke to Viridian shaking her and shouting her name.
"Finally. You were muttering in your sleep, Twilight. Honestly, I would have thought you were having a nightmare," said Viridian.
If only you knew.
A tap-tap came from the side of the carriage. "Your Highness, we are nearing the hall of Gryphus," informed one of the guards.
Viridian smiled and said "Good. I was beginning to wonder when this trip would end. Crocheting can only keep me occupied for so long."
"I still don't see how you find that entertaining at all," Twilight replied.
"I don't see how you find reading musty old books entertaining."
"Point taken."
Twilight opened the blinds and looked out the window of the carriage. Twilight found her breath taken away by the sheer height of the carriage. The group was a mile or so above the clouds.
Streams flowed from springs, swirling and racing downhill. Pockets of life thrived wherever the water pooled.
"Such beauty. Surely the mountains would appease the Griffons? Why continue a war that never should have happened?" Twilight wondered aloud. Viridian had no answer.
Abruptly, the carriage stopped.
"Halt in the name of King Leif!" someone shouted from outside.
Outside, Flash replied "We are here on a mission of peace. Leif agreed to opening his hall for talks of a treaty."
A pause. "Very well. Follow," said the Griffon guard.
The carriage resumed movement. Looking out the windows, Twilight could see that they had come under a portcullis in the gatehouse. Twilight looked back in curiosity. She saw massive stone walls spread out to either side of the gatehouse. Large oaken doors closed exit with a finality.
Those walls are huge! The stones themselves are at least a meter thick!
The carriage rolled along the main avenue. Not a soul disturbed the streets, leaving the escort in silence. On either side of the road sat dilapidated homes, neglected and abandoned. Beaked faces peered at the ponies from behind cracked windows.
Such poverty. Why does King Leif allow his subjects to wallow in mud and grime?
The diplomats left the citizens to drown in their misery. Eventually, the carriage came to the government center of the Griffon city, located at one base of the mountain. Disrepair could still be seen even here.
This war has too high a price. His own citizens live horribly. His focus on the war has left his home in shambles.
"We have arrived, Your Highness," announced Flash. Twilight was disturbed from her reverie. The carriage had parked parallel to the mountain side. Across from them was the Griffon Great Hall.
Flash opened the door for Twilight. Twilight eagerly stepped out, followed by Viridian.
Twilight and Viridian took a moment to gaze in awe at the ancient marvel standing before them. Grooved columns held up the roof protruding from the side of the mountain. Stone carvings decorated the front face of the roof, depicting varying Griffons from farmers, to warriors, to scholars.
Twilight detected movement coming towards her and the escort. A robed Griffon was approaching, looking distressed.
"Welcome, Princess Twilight, to Gryphus. I am Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hewit Bruxellois," greeted the anxious Minister.
"Thank you and your King for agreeing to a peace talk, Minister Bruxellois," Twilight cordially replied.
"The honor is ours, Princess. Follow me, and I shall take you to your quarters. Your guards can stay in adjacent rooms, if you would like," Bruxellois offered.
Flash Sentry interjected before Twilight could, "That is acceptable. The Twilight Guard will stay with her Highness."
Twilight shot a look at Flash, but could do nothing since Bruxellois had already turned.
Twilight and company followed suit into the Grand Hall.
If the outside was awe-inspiring, the inside of the Grand Hall was godly. Larger-than-life statues stood to either side of the hallway, and guarded the path into the mountain's heart. In the center of the path were even bigger statues, dedicated to past kings. Near the front of the line of kings, a half-constructed bust was in progress of the current King Thor. Behind that was his father, King Odin.
The Griffons pride themselves in their long line of Kings. But is all this necessary? Pride is good, but this is borderline vanity, Twilight pondered.
The group reached the end of the line of Kings. Twilight noticed that this one was the most dramatic and eye-catching statue. Twilight recalled her studies of nations with Celestia. The Griffons had believed that the first king was a god descended to bring greatness to the Griffons.
Gods.... they rule life from their distant heavens. I will not allow such attitude to drive my actions.
A single iron portcullis prevented further access. A stationed guard noticed Bruxellois and went into a side room. Shouting ensued, followed by the squeak of chains as the portcullis rose.
Bruxellois continued past the guardroom and down the foyer. A wide red carpet led to the end of the hallway and its double stone doors tall enough to fit two carriages on top of another. Except for the carpet and occasional torches, the drab stonewalls were unadorned and lifeless compared to the grandeur of outside. Several side passages beckoned, and stairs led to different balconies and floors.
"The hour grows late, and the King is not in attendance," Bruxellois informed, gesturing to the doors at the end of the hall, "So I will take you to your quarters now."
"Thank you. Our travel has wearied us, and a good sleep is found wanting."
Bruxellois nodded and took them closer to the halls end and its double doors. Abruptly, Bruxellois turned onto an upward spiraling staircase. The imposing double doors were a scant two meters away. Twilight could feel the concentration of ley energy behind the doors.
Such energy! This mountain resonates with ley. I am surprised that the Griffons are able to live here at all, much less have a home, considering the volatile nature of ley.
"Your Highness, we must continue," Flash reminded Twilight.
"Yes, of course," Twilight replied distractedly.
Viridian had to practically pull Twilight along. Twilight came to her senses and rushed to Bruxellois with practiced precision and grace.
Several flights of stairs above the open hall, the group finally turned into an open passageway. Contrasting to the plain and undecorated strength of the hall, this passageway was decorated with wooden panels and carpet flooring.
"We have reached the guest quarters. You may chose the rooms you prefer, Princess Twilight," announced Bruxellois. Bowing, Bruxellois turned and left the visitors to their business.
"Search the rooms, men! Ensure the safety of Her Highness," Flash commanded when Bruxellois was out of range. The Twilight Guards rushed into the nearby rooms.
"Flash, I don't think that's necessary," Twilight sighed.
"It is my royal duty to protect you, Your Highness," Flash replied. "I would prefer that I told Her Highness Celestia that we upset the Griffons than have to report that an assailant killed you."
"I can take care of myself. You worry too much Flash," Twilight chided. Before he could reply, Twilight left him and entered a room.
To himself, Flash muttered," I don't worry enough."
~~~
Behind the double doors was King Leifs throne-room. Twilight suspected correctly in its uniqueness. Ley energy flowed upward from the mountain's base. This energy accumulated in this room, entering from the gorges that make the sides of the throne-room. Near the edge of the gorge sat the Throne of the Griffon Kingdoms.
Upon this throne sat a Griffon, cast into shadow from lack of light. The Griffon sat silently and still, meditating.
A knock from the double doors disturbed the Griffin King Leif. Thor opened his eyes, revealing slit pupils and green irises. Anger flashed across his face. Calm returned.
"Come in Bruxellois," Leif commanded.
Bruxellois squeezed through the double doors, bringing in a glimmer of light. Leif shied away from the rays. The little light revealed the features of Leif. Leif had feathers of onyx, with streaks of grey. His armor fit his well-muscled but lean frame.
Bruxellois spoke, "Phobus, why can we not just kill that pest Twilight!."
Leif, or Phobus replied, "You will call me Leif while we are here in Gryphus! And as much as you have a grudge against Twilight, you will hold yourself and your changelings in check!"
"Of course, King Leif. But I also come with warning. Eclipse fast approaches, and though my son is strong, he will not last long to the powers of Eclipse," Bruxellois warned.
"Be at ease Chrysalis. Though Eclipse may be the son of Luna, he cannot stop our plans. The Six Sinestros shall prevail," Thor assured.
"The Hive is at your service, Phobus. Remember, Luna is mine alone to kill," the imposter Bruxellois stated.
"Of course. The chance will be yours. Now leave me."
Chrysalis, still in disguise, squeezed through the double doors again.
Why did I wind up with this arrogant fool? Damn Umbra... This would be unnecessary if he had not failed.
King Leif sat closed his eyes again.
~~~ The Next Morning
Twilight strode down the staircase eager to commence the peace talks. Having already eaten breakfast, Twilight planned for no interference. Accompanying her was the Twilight Guard. Flash insisted on having an escort. He also insisted that Viridian stay behind.
At least I know he means well, Twilight thought.
Twilight reached the double doors. To either side stood two guards. The two opened the doors as she approached.
Flash shot an exasperate look at Twilight when she trotted ahead. Twilight stopped short a distance from the empty throne.
"Welcome Princess Twilight, to the Griffon Kingdoms. I am deeply sorry that I was unable to properly greet you yesterday," came a call from above.
Twilight looked upwards in response. Spiraling down from above was King Leif. He touched down in front of his throne.
"A proper greeting is not the main concern of mine. I have come here to bring peace to our lands," said Twilight.
"I know why you are here Princess. But the reason I let you come is entirely different," replied Leif. As if on cue, a dozen guards came into the room. They closed the doors behind them.
"Then why are we here, King Leif?" Twilight inquired.
"Please, dispense with the titles. Call me Phobus. As to why we are here, I expect you already know why by now."
"I suspect, but I hope I am wrong," Twilight responded.
"You are not wrong. I have brought you here for a single purpose. To kill the Element of Magic, Princess Twilight! "
World Map Link
The griffon guards reverted to their changeling forms. Leif laughed.
"Why do this, King Leif? What purpose does this serve other than creating more bloodshed?" Twilight reasoned.
"We will throw all into darkness and despair under King Umbra! All shall fall before the might of the Six Sinestros! You now face Phobus, Sinestro of Terror!" Phobus declared. Phobus leaped upwards into the air, wings beating the air.
"What about your people? The Griffon Kingdoms are suffering!" Twilight cried.
"Mere puppets! I am not King Leif. Both father and son fell to my magic!" announced Phobus. Twilight gasped, but recovered quickly.
"To arms, my Twilight Guard! We must oust this usurper before he brings more havoc to our lands!" Twilight commanded. The Guards formed two circles around Twilight. Judges protected the weaker Magus and Spirits while they cast their spells.
Changelings charged with battle cries of "For The Hive! For the End of All!". The beasts leaped onto the closest Judges, biting and clawing. A judge fell, throat torn by a changeling. A few changelings got through, only to blasted by magical energies.
"Magic and strength alone will not avail you! Fear bites deeper than any blade!" Phobus shouted. He dived down towards Twilight. Phobus started to spin, using air magic to turn himself into a living spear. Twilight countered with a blast of magic from her horn. Their magic impacted, which resulted in a concussion wave. Phobus was flung back and those on the floor were knocked down.
The Judges were the first to recover. "Kill the monsters where they lay, ponies!" Flash cried.
"You WILL fail! I cannot let you escape, Twilight Sparkle!" Phobus howled. He again went into an aerial dive, but instead aimed for Flash.
Flash rolled to the side. Phobus and Flash faced each other amid the chaos. The two charged each other. Phobus yelled the word "Aero Puncta!" and a knife-like gust of wind shot towards Flash. Flash charged into the gust, protected by his armor. Flash thrust his rapier forward in an attempt to skewer Phobus. The imposter leaped and landed on Flash. The two rolled on the floor, Phobus clawing and Flash kicking.
Twilight watched hopelessly. I can't get a good line of sight. I might hit Flash!
"Blast him, Your Highness! Take us both!" hollered Flash.
"I refuse!" Twilight countered.
Twilight gritted her teeth, lowered her head, focused energy into her horn, and bull rushed towards the two.
I hope this works! "Let go, Flash!" Twilight warned.
Flash let go and shoved Phobus towards Twilight. Phobus turned towards Twilight, and his eyes widened. Phobus fled into the air. Twilight followed suit.
"Fool, you have sealed your death!" Phobus cackled. Phobus spun back to Twilight.
Lavender and black collided. Twilight was sent sprawling to the floor. Blood trickled from her horn.
"Slaughter them! Revel in their blood and fear!" Phobus declared.
Flash rushed to stand in front of his charge. The remaining Guards did like wise.
"We will not stand idly! You face the Twilight Guard!" Flash yelled.
Phobus laughed. Then his face went rigid with seriousness. "Stand down and give your precious princess to us. Otherwise, these changelings will eat your innards while you lay screaming for pathetic mercy," demanded Phobus.
"We will never hand her over to the likes of you!" yelled one of the Judges.
"Your death wishes are granted. Tear the flesh from their bones!" replied Phobus. The changelings charged from all sides. Even more swarmed from the gorges. The Judges let lose battle cries and the rest pulled out all restraints on their magic. Still, demoralized and outnumbered, several fell before something miraculous happened.
The double doors exploded open, clipping nearby changelings. Debris flew and smoke filled the room. Phobus was stunned momentarily. The Griffon recovered however.
"DAMN you Eclipse! You came sooner than expected. You win this for now!" Phobus screeched. He dived down into the gorges encircling the throne room. When the changelings saw Phobus had fled, they began to do so as well.
Twilight struggled to stand up. Flash helped Twilight off the floor. Twilight glanced at the area where the doors once where, and gazed through the smoke. The vague shape of an alicorn could be seen standing.
An alicorn? Could Celestia or Luna come to our aid? But... Phobus was screeching about an Eclipse.
"Who are you?" Twilight asked through the smoke.
"I am Eclipse. That is all you need to know. Now we must leave, before Phobus returns with worse things than changelings," replied Eclipse, with the deeper voice of a stallion. Eclipse turned before the smoke cleared.
Flash looked at Twilight. "We must follow Eclipse," was all he said.
"We must? How can you be so sure? Normally, you would object to following someone we don't know," Twilight inquired.
"I know of Eclipse, but not personally. I will explain later. We must go now though. Eclipse speaks the true, there are worse variations of changelings," Flash answered. "Can you walk?"
"I can run if I have to. But you will explain yourself when we get the chance," Twilight confirmed.
Twilight and the rest stumbled through the clearing smoke. Twilight looked around for the elusive Eclipse.
"Up the stairs! Hurry!" called Eclipse. The stallion still remained out of sight.
I don't know about this. But I will have to take Flash's word on this.
Through use of magic or physical means, the group followed the voice of Eclipse. Twilight reached the top of the stairs and realized that this was were the group had slept last night.
Further down the hall, Eclipse shouted, "Follow the laughing griffon statues! It will lead you to the outside of the mountain!" He still stayed out of sight. Sure enough, in the corner, a laughing griffon pointed in a direction. Better get Viridian and the others before we leave .
The group raced onwards after retrieving Viridian and her guards.
Right.
Up the stairs.
Left.
Up more stairs.
Left.
Right.
Right again.
The group reached a dead end room. Twilight growled in frustration and looked up. And gaped.
A door randomly placed at least 20 feet above the air....
Movement above attracted her attention. Twilight caught a glimpse of Eclipse flying straight towards the door. Purplish-black energy arced from his horn towards the door. Eclipse flew through the dust.
I guess that works...
Outside the portal was an unused and decaying balcony overlooking the city. To the right was a rugged path along the side of the mountain. Eclipse was waiting when everyone got through what was left of the door.
Eclipse was a tall and handsome stallion.
Wait... handsome? This stallion is at best of scandalous personality, and besides that, this isn't the proper time or place.
His coat was a light grey, except for the patches of black above the hooves. His mane was midnight-blue with streaks of black. His eyes... cyan, piercing and scrutinizing. Eclipse wore silvery mithril armor over his muscular but lean frame, edges of the armor decorated with gold.
"We are almost there," he said. Before Eclipse could turn, Twilight interrupted him.
"Before we go any further, I need to know who you are," Twilight demanded.
"You wouldn't believe me, and there are some things that should be kept secret," Eclipse replied.
"If you won't tell her, Eclipse, then I will," Flash announced.
"How do you know who Eclipse is, Flash?" Twilight inquired, narrowing her eyes.
"It is royal duty of Judges to know the history of royalty. The-"
"Royalty!? You mean Eclipse is from royalty? Which line?" Twilight interjected.
"I will tell you, please be patient Your Highness. The Judges are not a new order. They have been around since the founding of Equestria. We guard the royalty and aid them. This is why I can tell you Eclipse's heritage with certainty," Flash explained.
Twilight hoofed the ground with impatience. "Continue," Twilight commanded.
Eclipse stood forward, staring into Twilight's eyes. "If another were to tell you, then I would prefer to tell you myself," said Eclipse.
With absolute confidence, "I am the son of Princess Luna."
Everyone except Flash and a few other senior officers gaped. Viridian swooned to the floor. Twilight stood speechless. Eventually, she was able to stutter, "Y... You are.... Luna's son?"
"Yes," Eclipse replied.
"Then why-" Twilight began to ask.
"Have I not come sooner? And more importantly, who is my father? Am I correct Twilight Sparkle?" Eclipse interrupted. Continuing without giving Twilight a chance to reply, "I have not come sooner because I did not realize that my mother had returned from her banishment. Or even recovered. As to who my father is, I do not think you are ready to know. Further more, he died in soul a millennium ago and died in body not much later. Now we must go, before the changelings return."
"Eclipse is correct, Your Highness. We must move on," Flash suggested.
Twilight looked ready to argue, but then thought better of it. 'Very well. Lead the way, Eclipse."
"We have to climb to the summit's peak. No more delays," Eclipse stated. He turned. Eclipse picked up speed until he was short of a run. The others followed suit. Two Guards helped Viridian to her feet.
~~~
Beneath the throne room, even deeper in the mountain was the mountain's source of ley energy. Large, natural chimneys led to the gorges in the throne room.
Two figures faced each other in the darkness. Surrounding them was a large mass of smaller creatures, chattering and clicking, pulsating and shuffling.
"All goes to plan, Sinestro Phobus," one announced.
"Good. Let them escape. But of course, harry them the entire way to the summit. They shall find that the climb of Mount Gryphus is no easy stroll!" Phobus replied.
The first turned to face the other creatures. "Go, my children! Show them the terror of the combined might of the Hive!"
The creatures as one turned. They clambered up the walls, rushing to the surface, rushing towards the unprepared.
The cave fell silent. Only the original two were left. Then there was one, as Phobus faded and dispersed into the air.
"I will have my revenge, Twilight. Your pain will be my ecstasy..."
~~~
The fleeing group of diplomats had taken an old trail to reach the mountain's summit. What awaited them there only Eclipse knew. Twilight intended to find out.
"Once we reach the summit, what's the next part of your grand escape plan?" Twilight inquired as they ran along the path.
"You will see. I wouldn't have us run up the mountain only to be trapped," Eclipse replied.
Just because you are, no claim, that you are Luna's son doesn't make you trustworthy. I would trust Discord more than you right now, Twilight thought to herself. Nevertheless, Twilight continued running alongside Eclipse.
Eventually, the fugitives reached a point in the path where it flattened out. A rock overhang provided shelter from above.
Eclipse permitted everyone to stop for a breather. Viridian was the most grateful for the respite.
"We can't stay long. This will be the only rest you shall receive. Our pursuers will not let us have an easy time of reaching the summit," reminded Eclipse.
Twilight saw an opportunity to repair her dress. Twilight sat down on the gravelly floor. Her horn glowed slightly, for the spell she had in mind was simple. The fabric stitched itself back together, and at the same time, began to bring itself together. The end result was a lavender-grey jumpsuit, tight enough to prevent an assailant from grabbing hold, but loose enough to allow freedom of movement.
With a bright flash of magic, Twilight brought into existence her own armor. In the center of the mithril breastplate was a single amethyst gem.
The dress made more functional, Twilight moved closer to the back of the overhang where Viridian had settled down. "Allow me to repair your dress, Viridian," Twilight asked.
Viridian paused a moment before she spoke, but still agreed in the end. "Promise me you can revert it back to a dress, Twilight," Viridian joked, eyes twinkling with humor.
"Of course, Viridian. I would never come between you and your fabulous dresses!" Twilight busied herself with morphing Viridians dress.
A moment of silence followed when Twilight finished. Then Twilight began hesitantly "I feel this is all my fault, Viridian. You are all in danger simply because you are in association with me," Twilight began.
"Nonsense, Twilight. The Twilight Guard volunteered to serve you. They accept the troubles that come with being your Guard," Viridian intervened.
"But are their lives worth my life, my single life?"
"Of course! We all love you very deeply Twilight! You're a friend to all, Twilight. Love and friendship are important things worth fighting for."
Twilight did not reply back. Viridian took satisfaction in seeing that she had quelled Twilight's concerns enough to quiet Twilight.
Viridians words had provided food-for-thought to Twilight. Friendship.... Love.... the very core of society. They are worth fighting for. My friends back in Ponyville, Viridian and the Twilight Guard here. I will fight for them ,as they fight for me.....
A cry from Viridian brought Twilight back to reality. Viridian had stood suddenly, pointing down the cliff face. Twilight peered over the edge.
"Changelings! Up, up, we need to go!" Twilight shouted. The black swarm was rapidly advancing the side of the cliff. Others were flying straight for the overhang in the air above.
The Twilight Guard scrambled to their feet, and ran as they followed Eclipse up the mountain path. The buzzing drone of the changelings grew louder and louder with every step the runaways took. At the same time, the mountain's peak drew nearer.
The first of the flyers reached the stragglers that lagged behind. Twilight caught fleeting glimpses of the flyers, and saw that these creatures were not the changelings she were used to seeing. Rather, they looked like large dragonflies, spines protruding from their tail. Twilight decided to dub them thornlings.
Several of the thornlings flicked their tails, and spines rained down from above. More than a few of the armored soldiers fell, pierced by the spines.
Damn them all! Damn all the changelings that are and ever will be! Chrysalis and her spawn will pay for those deaths!
But Twilight could do nothing at the moment. Her only option was to follow Eclipse and hope his plan worked.
Some of the Elementals used their magic to impede the progress of the changelings, and employed avalanches and air turbulence. Although this did work, the effort was futile. The changelings surpassed all barriers that were thrown at them, buying the ponies mere seconds. However, the ponies pumped their legs furiously to make every second count.
At last, the harried ponies had reached the mountain peak. The top of the peak was leveled by hand, and there stood a weathered and beat temple.
"Have you brought us here to pray before we breathe our last breaths, Eclipse! What help could this temple possibly provide!" Twilight shouted, angry at what she found fruitless.
"Just get inside! I will not waste time arguing the finer points of our escape with you!" Eclipse snapped. Cowed by the ferocity of his reply, Twilight obeyed.
The hard-pressed group raced to the interior of the temple. Mosaics decorated the columns and walls. Some seemed like a yearly-calender showing the moon, sun, and stars, while others seemed to bring to life epic tales of Gryphon heroes.
At the end of the temple were a series of steps, upon which rested a crescent-like altar. "Gather around the altar. Don't argue, just do," Eclipse ordered. Eclipse then proceeded to stand on top of the altar.
The incessant droning of the changelings had reached its peak. The black tide of carapaces and chitin washed into the temple, a great tsunami.
"Hold them off for a short time! I only need a few moments!" Eclipse shouted, above the now deafening chatter of the swarm.
The Judges readied swords and lances for what seemed to them a final stand. Elementals and Magi cleared their mind and prepared to let all break lose. Eclipse began to chant incoherently.
But the bipedal insects did not advance. Instead they blocked the entrance, further crushing the morale of the beleaguered soldiers.
Twilight saw that the changelings were parting for something. And then that something, or rather someone, stepped forth from the mass.
"Come out, Twilight Sparkle! Face me now, or would you rather hide?!" Queen Chrysalis shouted. The Twilight Guard bristled at the insult, but they could do nothing.
"Don't do it. DO NOT step out there, Twilight," Flash whispered nearby. Twilight glanced at him, and considered his advice. Momentarily.
Twilight shouldered her way to the front of the Guard. "I am here, Chrysalis. I do not need to hide, nor do I need to use cowardly tricks to win," Twilight announced.
If Chrysalis was the least bit fazed at Twilight's comment, she didn't show it. "I finally have you in my grasp, Twilight," Chrysalis began, eyes burning fiercely, "The sight of your carcass being devoured by my children would bring me pleasure but.... Seeing you on your knees begging for mercy like a whipped dog would bring greater pleasure. If you beg hard enough, I might consider letting your precious protectors leave alive."
"I will not bow down to a monster like you. The day that I do bow down to the likes of you would be the day that I cast away everything my followers and friends hold dear," answered Twilight firmly. No complaint was heard from the Twilight Guard, proud that their princess refused.
"Then you have chosen death. Leave Twilight incapacitated, kill the rest," Chrysalis ordered. The swarm surged forward, hungering for the flesh and blood of ponies.
Eclipse's chanting had reached a high at this point, frenzied and hysterical.
"Noctisque per umbram abstulerunt nos!" Eclipse cried out, as changelings hammered the Judges. Green-black tendrils shot from the altar, wrapping themselves around the struggling Twilight Guard and their princess. The tendrils pulled them into the swirling ring of black that had replaced the crescent altar.
Once all the Guard was taken by the tendrils, the swirling vortex condensed to the size of an apple. The condensed onyx orb then exploded, as wave after wave of shadows forced the changelings to the ground.
Dazed and confused, the changelings could not escape the collapse of the temple. Columns cracked and walls were blown out. The roof fell down with a thunderous crash. Dust and debris flew. The rubble settled, and the ruined temple did not stir any more.
The changelings outside the temple were stunned at what had happened. The temple had collapsed on top of their brood-mother, and killed many brothers and sisters.
The changelings were about to flee the area, but the wreckage moved again. An arm was thrust up out of the debris. The arm came out further, turning into a changeling.
"Damn you, Twilight Sparkle! Damn Phobus! I will not stop until Twilight's head is in my hands!" cried the changeling queen.
Twilight's head throbbed. The feeling of intangibility and incorporeality worsened her mind-crushing migraine. Unseen forces pulled on Twilight from every direction, and twisted and bent Twilight like noodles.
There was no depth to the environment, the world was flat and stiff. Paradoxically, Twilight free-floated in the grey, empty space.
Twilight shut her eyes against the abyss. She no longer cared what happened. Indifferent. Distant.
Seconds passed into minutes, minutes into days, days into months, entire-life-times. And still Twilight did not care.
Focus, Twilight! Fight it! Don’t let the void swallow you!
Twilight flailed. Her hands instinctively clutched her head in pain as the voice reverberated through her body.
Leave! Begone! Twilight futilely strained to shout. The void refused to carry her voice.
Twilight curled into the fetus position when the voice came once more.
You are the Element of Magic! You have defeated those who seek to destroy harmony! Resist the magic of this plane!
The words struck a chord within Twilight’s being. Images came to Twilight, trickling first, and then a thunderous downpour of memories, too fast for comprehension. Remembrance dawned upon the alicorn.
I am Twilight Sparkle.
Twilight focused on images of her and other ponies, who laughed, played, and celebrated with her.
We are the Elements of harmony.
Two regal mares, one luminous while the other was shadowy, placed a crown atop Twilight’s head.
I am Princess Twilight. I was student to Princes Celestia and her sister, Princess Luna. I defeated Discord. Chrysalis. Sombra. Tirek.
I learned the meaning of friendship. I aid faithful subjects. I’ve dealt with fanatical rivals.
Twilight recalled everything that the void had stolen from her. With some effort, Twilight shook off the last cobwebs of numbness.
I am Twilight Sparkle, Element of Harmony, Princess of Equestria, and Guardian of Friendship! Nothing, not even this dimensional prison, will stop me!
The tumultuous forces ceased their exertion on Twilight, strengthening her resolve. However, one force still acted on Twilight, and slowly pulled her backwards.
Twilight grunted as she tried to turn herself around. After much struggle, she finally succeeded.
There was no noticeable difference. Yet Twilight was still being pulled in the same direction, without any foreseeable end.
The feeling of intangibility gradually gave way to a sense of surety and realness. Solidity returned to Twilight. The environment, without actually moving, reimaged itself into a tunnel.
At last, I can leave this miserable plane of non-existence.
A deep-throated laughter exploded into existence. Twilight felt that the laughter knew her, mocked her for what she was, and she shivered.
Ashen hands stretched out towards Twilight. They danced and intertwined, and sought to separate Twilight from escape.
A raspy voice with the sound of ancient, dry, and unused sandpaper called out to Twilight, Twilight… I will have you… as my slave. You will help me… expand my empire. The void is eternally hungry….
The hands stretched closer, and encircled Twilight like wolves. The hands inexorably tightened the sphere, which tortured Twilight by delaying her what seemed inevitable to her. Tired of the game, the hands bolted towards her.
Twilight slammed her eyes closed, and waited for the sensation of being crushed and torn.
But it never came. Instead, Twilight felt a sensation of falling backwards, and falling fast.
Twilight opened her eyes. She breathed a heavy sigh when she saw the sky, tinged lavender by the setting sun.
Relief turned to panic as the gravity of the situation fell upon her.
Twilight’s mind raced back to her flying lessons with Rainbow Dash.
Falling is easier than flying, Twilight. All you gotta do is spread your wings, slow down, and guide the fall. Rainbow Dash had once said.
Twilight turned herself to face the ground. And saw that she was much lower than she had originally thought.
The town below raced upwards to crush her body. Twilight spread out her wings, and winced when her wings jerked hard as they caught the air.
Twilight screamed as she plummeted towards a building’s roof. One wing clipped the edge with a CRACK and sent her into a dizzying spiral straight for the street below.
Something metallic and yet feathery broke her fall. Twilight let out a low moan, as the pain of her broken wing registered.
From underneath Twilight came muttering, “Stupid, suicidal, Griffons.” Twilight was roughly shoved off of the other’s back.
When the other stood, Twilight took the opportunity to study the other.
Twilight noted the golden, gleaming armor of the Solar Guard, as of yet unchipped from lack of battle. At least they’re friendly. Twilight also noted that the soldier was a female pegasus. The angle of the setting sun skewed the rest of the pegasus’s features.
The soldier did not have the same problem, and instantly recognized Twilight.
The soldier took a few moments to string together words coherently.
“T-twi-twilight? What are you doing here in Pisa? You left yesterday for Mount Gryphus! You said the peace talks were important! And why did you fall onto me?” cried the familiar voice.
“Rainbow Dash! You’re lessons… came in handy,” Twilight responded through clenched teeth.
‘What do you mean my lessons came in handy? You aren’t making any sense, Twilight!” Rainbow Dash exclaimed.
Prepare yourself! The rest are coming!
“What did you say, Rainbow Dash?’ Twilight asked, still prone on the floor.
“I didn’t-, “Rainbow Dash began. Vortexes opened above them in the air. Twilight Guards and changelings were dumped and fell onto the street. A final vortex opened, from which Eclipse landed on his feet.
Rainbow Dash could only stammer.
Disoriented, the Twilight Guard and the changelings were still sprawled on the floor.
Rainbow Dash thought to cry,” Changelings!” The pegasus fumbled to draw her sword.
The changelings dizzily stood, as did the Twilight Guards. Flash shouted an order, “Surround them!”
The Guards did as ordered, and forced the changelings into a precarious position. Meanwhile, Rainbow Dash dragged Twilight away- Twilight insisted that Viridian be retrieved first- and took care to not jostle Twilight’s wing. Rainbow Dash then went back for Viridian, and dragged the unconscious mare next to the prone Twilight.
“Surrender now and be allowed to live, or die in vain,” Flash shouted.
“Kill them now! They are traitorous, and will not stop their malicious ways!” Eclipse decreed.
Flash ignored Eclipse.
“Pizurk-hai, barash brûf! Azagon! Azish! ” a changeling cried in the cursed Black Speech.
(For those not fluent in Black Speech, this roughly translates into “Changelings, crush the insects! Kill Twilight! Kill them all!”)
The changelings surged forward, yelling cries of “Maukgothlob! ” and “Maukmatum ”.
(Again, roughly translates to “For the Queen!” and “Fight to the death!”)
It was a bloody massacre. The changelings were outnumbered two to one. The changeling’s great advantage of superior numbers was non-existent.
Magical fire roasted them, swords cleaved heads from bodies, attackers pressed from all sides. Still, the changelings were true to their word. They died in servitude to their Queen.
Flash stood over a dying changeling. The changeling laughed, and said with a hoarse voice, ”Aarûz, aan agh ran afbûrgulur, lorz aa- ”
Flash plunged the sword through the changeling’s abdomen. The last word gave way to a gurgling in the changeling’s throat. Flash whispered to the already dead changeling, “You’re the fool if you think I will let that happen.”
(“Soon, sun and moon will be cast in darkness, stupid-.”)
The Twilight Guard may have won, but the escape, the void, and the battle began to take their toll. Several of the Magi and Elementals simply flopped onto the ground. The Twilight Guard moved towards the buildings and stood against the walls for support.
Flash trudged to Twilight, sword dragging on the bloody ground. “Caduceus! Shining Sea! Tend to Twilight!” Flash shouted to a Judge and an Elemental who were tending to the wounded. They nodded and came over to Twilight.
First, Caduceus asked for Twilight to sit straight. He gently folded the wing against Twilight’s back. After he checked that the wing was in a proper position, he reached into his pack and pulled out a roll of bandages. The field medic proceeded to wrap the bandages around Twilight’s wings and her body.
“There. Do not, I repeat, do not , attempt to use your wings before thy are fully healed. And I will determine when your wings are healed. Doctor’s orders,” Caduceus commanded. Flash shot Caduceus a look.
“And you Flash, need to take a chill pill and rest. Seriously, you should rest,” Caduceus suggested. Flash ignored the recommendation and instead sat down to clean and sharpen his sword.
“Caduceus, stow it and continue tending to the rest of the wounded,” Flash ordered.
While the two Judges fenced words, Shining Sea worked her Elemental magic on Twilight.
Shining Sea placed her hands on Twilight’s shoulders, and energy flowed from Shining to Twilight. The very touch felt cool, and Twilight’s buzzing mind calmed. The pain faded away, and gave way to comfort. Twilight would later swear it was like a phoenix-down bed.
“Sleep, Your Highness. We will take care of everything,” Shining Sea whispered.
The last thing Twilight heard before she zonked out was Flash, “Rainbow Dash, go to Pisa’s town hall and inform Shining Armor of our arrival.
Twilight once more found herself in a strange world.
Blue mist shrouded everything.
Not this again… No, no, no…
Twilight’s breathing became erratic and fast.
“Twilight, there is no need for fear,” another spoke.
Twilight’s breathing calmed. Twilight had fallen to the floor and had not noticed. The other offered a hand and helped Twilight to her feet.
“Luna… this journey, this life… is terrifying,” Twilight began.
“Shh, young one. We all must face obstacles in life,” Luna began as she stepped closer to Twilight.
Twilight gasped when Luna embraced her without warning.
“Shhh. Thou art frightened,” Luna said soothingly as she rubbed Twilight’s head, “Thou have faced many opponents in thy time as my sister’s protégé. Thou will face many more in the future. However, thou will surely defeat them as surely as the sun and moon rise and set,” Luna assured.
“How can you be so sure, Luna? How is it that certainty finds you but eludes me?” Twilight questioned.
Luna stepped back, and held Twilight at arms lengths by the shoulders. The two princesses locked eyes.
“Because I know thy true enemy. Not the Griffons, not the changelings, nothing outside. Only… thou,” Luna answered.
“Why must you and Celestia be so cryptic? Your riddles and half-truths only further my frustration!” Twilight yelled. She broke free of Luna, and turned her back to the goddess.
“Thy enemies did not create the doubt that now controls thou. Thou did. Thou must conquer thyself, thou must gain control of thy fears. That is the true trial of your journey, of life,” Luna explained.
Twilight said nothing. Luna continued after a momentary pause.
“I once let my fears take hold, and distort my vision of this world. I do not wish to see the same thing to happen to thou. Forgive the past, worry not about the future. Live the present,” Luna counseled.
“Forgive the past? He betrayed you, Luna. He cast you into darkness!” Twilight countered.
“I’ve chosen to forget him…” Luna answered hesitantly.
Twilight turned to face Luna. “Even your son? Have you forgotten Eclipse?” Twilight asked angrily. Her eyes gleamed with an inner fire.
Luna gasped. The lunar princess fell to her knees. “Eclipse… he… he left me… after… I did not know he was even still alive,” Luna choked out. The distraught mother looked up at Twilight. Tears left streaks on her face.
“Does thou know where he is? Is he alive? I beg thou to answer, Twilight. Please…” Luna pleaded, already on her knees.
I should force you to find out yourself, Twilight thought angrily.
Twilight, what is wrong with you! Snap out of it, Twilight rethought, while she shook her head to clear the dark thoughts.
Twilight answered quickly before Luna could misinterpret,” Alive. Your son is with me, alive and well.”
Luna broke down, and began to sob uncontrollably. “Eclipse… my son… my son… I am sorry…”
Twilight shifted uncomfortably. The Princess of Magic and Friendship was at a loss for words. She turned, and left Luna to her emotions.
Twilight woke as the first rays of sunlight danced across her face. She sat up.
"Twili, you're awake!," someone yelled. Not seeing who I'm talking to is getting extremely annoying, Twilight thought to herself.
"Brother? Is that you?" Twilight asked. The sun in her eyes made it hard to see the rest of the room.
"Shining Armor stood up from a stool in the corner. "Who else would it be! I insisted on being the first one to see you wake-"
A knocking came from the door, followed by a voice. "Lord Armor, I ask that I be let in. You've seen her wake first, now let me see it with my own eyes!' Flash called from outside the room.
Shining Armor laughed. "Of course. Bring in Eclipse as well," Shining answered as he unlocked the door.
Flash burst into the room. Eclipse strode in behind the guard. Last, but not least, was Viridian.
"Your Highness, are you feeling all right? Would you like me to fetch Caduceus-" Flash stopped when Twilight started to laugh.
"I appreciate your concern, Flash, but it could be put to better use. Such as preparing the return to Ponyville," Twilight explained, and continued when Flash tried to protest," I assure you Flash, I am alive and well, thanks to the Twilight Guard's efforts."
Flash nodded. "As you wish, Your Highness. We shall prepare for the return home," Flash affirmed. He rushed out the door.
"You heard the princess! She is fine, and wants us to prepare for the return trip! Go,go, go!" Flash ordered to the waiting Twilight Guard. A cheer ensued, and then the sound of a stampede exiting the building.
"They had all insisted on waiting outside. You have an excellent Guard, Twili," Shining Armor commented.
Twilight noticed Eclipse was still in the room. "Eclipse, is there something you need?" Twilight asked.
"No, but I come with advice: Never lose sight of who you truly are," Eclipse consoled. He dipped his head ever so slightly, and then left the room.
"Is it true, Twili? Is he really Luna's son?" Shining Armor asked.
"To my current knowledge, yes. We shall see when we reach Equestria," Twilight replied.
"We? Twilight, the war is still going on. We can't leave Pisa-" Shining Armor began.
"I have a feeling, brother. I don't think the Griffins want to continue this war any longer. Especially with the revelations of yesterday," Twilight explained. Shining Armor cocked his head quizzically.
"Trust me, I think it would be best if the occupation of Pisa were to end. I will explain more later, but we need to prepare for the departure from Pisa. And I mean everyone's departure from Pisa, not just mine."
Shining Armor sighed, and closed his eyes on concentration. "Very well, Twilight. I'll trust you on this one. I think Viridian wants to talk to you now. Rest easy, sister," Shining Armor reminded. Shining Armor left the room.
Viridian seemed on the edge of tears. "Twilight, thank goodness you are all right. I was worried about you. Is your wing okay?" Viridian asked.
"My wing has been better. But I must tell you that I am fine. There is no need to worry," Twilight assured.
Viridian smiled the biggest smile Twilight had ever seen. "So.... if you weren't interested in Flash, are you interested in Eclipse? He's royalty..." Viridian asked, saying the last word with a bit of a musical pitch.
Twilight groaned. "Viridian, I love you, bit there's a limit to everything."
"I'm joking, Twilight. I don't think Eclipse is that much interested I you, either."
"What are you trying to say? That I'm not good enough for him?"
There was a moment of silence. Then the two mates broke out into a for of giggles.
"I can't wait till we get home, Twilight."
"Neither can I. Neither can I."
