The Great War
It was the worse tragedy Equestria has ever faced,
greater than that of the mass genocide
by the ones called "humans".
even greater than Doctor Hill's elemental atronachs
attacking random villages.
But this story... is about two ponies that fought in the way. It may come to your surprise, but, they were not on the same side. In face, they were both in one of the two major factions of the war. The Rinosi, which were Unicorns, and the Freequins, which were the Pegasi. Those were the names of the two groups that fought in that bloody battle. Back then, ponies of the same race stayed with each other, so that means everypony was in a group, though, the Earth ponies made no alliance with either. There were a numerous renegades that pursued their otherracial friends to help with a few things for them, (such as supplies) but still it didn't dominate the neutral party.
But continuing on... this was a civil war, the Unicorns, formerly, the Rinosi, were the "leaders" of Equestria, at least before the princesses' power. They lived in the town of the princesses' castle, and governed the rest of Equestria with a hard rule. The other ponies thought nothing wrong, (at first) their system was adequately fair. (with a few intricacies, but those will be worked in at a later time.)
The Pegasi, formerly, the Freequins, challenged the Rinosi, or more correct in time, the Pegasi challenged the Rinosi, and when war invoked, they formed the Freequins, which in it's name means the freedom fighters. Back in time, the Pegasi were a race of honor, and would take it as a stimulus for battle if restricted in any way, by anyone. They tolerated it, at first, but then war preachers spoke with that of the pride and honorful Pegasi should be free to do as they please, that sparked the fire of their unwise hearts, then they declared war.
Now, easy to guess, (with that possibility of being something else) the two ponies were a Unicorn, and a Pegasus. They shared affection with one another, you'll find out why soon enough. The Pegasus was male, and the Unicorn was female. I should state now, that one of them was unwillingly thrown into the ranks of their corresponding faction, due to official orders. The other joined after a meeting with their mate, to free them from the damning law that forbids interracial marriage, but didn't know that later that day, the other would be in the scrimmage as well. Which pony is who, and their names, you will figure out yourself.
Now, let's go to the unicorn.
