Killing With Kindness
She Woke Up One Morning
Load Full StoryFluttershy woke up to the sound of unfamiliar birds. She opened her eyes to a bright ray of light that had spread across her covers. Angel was sleeping at the foot of her bed. Fluttershy adored the tiny snores that he made when sleeping. Usually, Angel was the one to wake Fluttershy up, but last night was rough for the poor thing. He just couldn’t seem to fall asleep. Fluttershy woke up a bit later that day, but she didn’t have anything going on that day, so she was glad she as able to sleep in. Flutters got out of bed, careful not to disturb the sleeping rabbit. She made her way downstairs and observed the other animals sound asleep like usual.
The birds she heard weren’t familiar to her at all. She looked through her window and around her lot. There weren’t any ponies around to scare the birds since she lived just outside town. She had to find out what was outside. Fluttershy gently placed her hoof on her front door and lightly pushed it open, trying not to let the door creak too much. She found that opening the door quickly made less noise, but would still draw attention if she went too fast. After the door opened, Fluttershy took one small step out onto the dirt pathway. The air was warm and pleasant, and so was the chirping from a bird she obviously had never heard before. Raising her head, Fluttershy saw something incredible, a bird only seen a few times in Equestria, the Aurum avem—The Gold bird, a cousin to the phoenix.
Fluttershy couldn’t believe it! She was actually seeing a rare Gold bird in her own yard! Fluttershy tip-hoofed to the slim tree on the hill where her cottage lay. The Gold bird was by itself, no other birds around. Fluttershy wished she had brought a sketchbook to quickly draw the bird, but she wasn’t a very good artist anyway. Instead she exuberantly watched the bird hop around the tree branches above her and scratch its feathers. Suddenly, the bird flapped its glistening wings to fly to another tree. Fluttershy couldn’t help but express her love for the bird’s appearance.
“What gorgeous feathers! Any pegasis would be jealous of your wings!”
The bird turned its head to see who was in his or her presence, and ran into the trunk of another tree. The rare Gold fell to the ground and stopped moving.
Fluttershy gasped and ran to the bird’s aid, but there was no way the bird survived the fatal trunk of the tree. Fluttershy sobbed as she prepared a burial for the bird next to the large tree. What a horrible start to my day, she thought. But Fluttershy has learned to shake some things off, to let it go. She decided she’d still make today a good day by visiting some of her friends in Ponyville.
Fluttershy left out some food for the animals and trotted down the dirt road to Sugarcube Corner. If Pinkie Pie was awake—which she was at this time—she could sit and chat with some treats if she weren’t busy. Fluttershy could use a peppy friend like Pinkie right now. Or maybe she should have a serious talk with someone like Twilight. Twilight could help Fluttershy relax as she told her the horrifying story of the Gold bird and the tree. She had no idea what had happened.
Maybe Fluttershy could talk to Applejack. She hardly ever talks to her, and she’s not a big fan of apples, but—Hey, there’s Rainbow Dash.
“Hey, Rainbow Dash! Could we talk?“
Rainbow performed a new trick she had described to Fluttershy, but Fluttershy didn’t think the trick would look this cool. Rainbow looped loops and punched clouds out of existence. Fluttershy was amazed that she could even memorize the entire act. Was it for a competition coming up?
From above, Rainbow screamed, “Hold on, Fluttershy!”
Fluttershy smiled and watched Rainbow do a few more stunts. Just as Rainbow approached her finale, not as big or colorful as a sonic rainboom, but just as dangerous, Fluttershy thought she’d throw in some encouragement.
"Go, Rainbow Dash! You’re doing great!”
Rainbow flew upwards until she passed every cloud in sight. Then she began plummeting in a diagonal direction while spinning and weaving through clouds and taller houses until—SMACK!
Rainbow Dash, Equestria’s greatest flyer, hit the ground, scattering the dirt and plants from the earth and ended the landing with a fiery explosion. Fluttershy was speechless. That wasn’t supposed to happen! Rainbow Dash always aces her stunts. Well, except for the time when she flew into Twilight’s tree house... or when she almost flunked her performance at the Young Flyer’s Competition... or the other time she flew into Twilight’s house...
Was this Fluttershy’s fault? Did she distract her? No, Rainbow hardly ever gets distracted. But what if she didn’t know Fluttershy was there? How was she going to tell her friends about what happened?
The yellow mare flew (which isn’t normally her thing) through town in a hurry to Twilight. Twilight could figure out what to do. She is the Princess of Magic or Friendship or whatever. Fluttershy flapped her wings as hard as she could, panting and trying to dodge the Ponyvillians out and about. It was a beautiful day in Ponyville, and everyone was seemingly happy, all except Fluttershy. And Rainbow Dash, if she were still alive.
Fluttershy bumped into a stallion with a grocery bag and turned around to apologize.
“I am SO sorry!”
The stallion smiled and yelled back, “That’s okay, miss!”
Fluttershy smiled, and then a bird (another Gold bird!) flew down from a nearby building and squawked as it flew into the stallion’s face and caused him to topple down a muddy cliff, killing both him and the bird.
Fluttershy was devastated and flew passed everypony, and the ones she ran into, she could only yell sorry, but she didn’t want to look at what happened behind her. One by one, she could hear the screaming of other ponies and crashing buildings.
Finally, she was at Twilight Sparkle’s library house. She never understood why it was considered a library. Nobody ever went there to check out books. Rainbow Dash got Twilight’s Daring Do books from there until she was able to buy her own. Rainbow Dash... She couldn’t think about her.
Fluttershy knocked on the door four times at just the right pressure so that way the noise was loud enough to hear, but wasn’t obnoxious. The door burnt into ashes right before Flutters’ eyes. She backed a few feet away. Twilight didn’t even ask about the door, when she got to the front of her house.
“...Fluttershy? What’s wrong?” Twilight asked.
“Oh, Twilight! It’s awful! Everypony is...is...”
“Is what?”
“DYING! Everypony is dying and it’s all my fault!” She grabbed onto Twilight’s shoulders and sobbed for a few seconds before Twilight grabbed her and brought her inside. They sat on a couch in the back of the living room/library.
“Now, whose dying, Fluttershy?”
“Everypony I talk to dies in some sort of horrible accident!”
Fluttershy paused and looked around the room and then at Twilight.
“That’s odd.” She whispered.
“What’s odd? Wait, I take that back. Everything you’re telling me is odd.”
“Twilight, I’ve been talking to you for over sixty seconds and you haven’t... exploded yet.”
Twilight pondered for a second.
“So, what you’re saying is that everypony you’ve talked to has died?”
Fluttershy nodded her head and wiped the tears from her eyes.
“Well, then whom did you talk to today?”
Fluttershy gulped, “Uh, well, I talked to a Aurum avem...”
Twilight’s eyes shot open, but she stayed quiet and waited for Fluttershy to finish.
“And... I talked to a stallion when I was on my way here... and I tried talking to Rainbow Dash.”
“... You killed—I mean, Rainbow Dash is dead?” Twilight asked slowly.
Fluttershy started sobbing again, and she tried explaining everything that had happened, but her crying made her explanation very hard to understand. Twilight listened. Something about Rainbow crashing, and then fire. And then Twilight's front door burning down.
“Fluttershy, calm down.” Twilight quieted the shaking pegasis.
“I’m sure whatever you’ve done today, it didn’t have to do with everypony’s... Eh...”
Fluttershy sighed. What if it was just a coincidence?
“Maybe you’re right, Twilight. I guess I’m just having a bad day. Thanks, Twilight, for talking it out with me. It’s good to know I have a friend like you to talk to.”
Twilight smiled, and Fluttershy smiled when she was out the doorway (no door, remember?) and realized that Twilight was still alive. Fluttershy looked back at Twilight and Twilight waved. Fluttershy turned back around and made a good ten feet before she heard a crash behind her. The ground shook for a moment, then a cloud of dust and wood chunks filled the air. Fluttershy noticed some books near her hooves as she looked at the ground and turned towards the wreckage. Fluttershy shook in terror as Spike was walking towards her from Sugarcube Corner. When he saw the old tree collapse, he dropped the basket of desserts he was carrying. Fluttershy slipped away through the dust clouds before Spike could notice she was there.
Fluttershy walked through the Pompeii-like Ponyville with her head to the ground. She didn’t say a word to anyone. She slumped all the way to her cottage and wanted to start the day over by waking up to the sound of the rare birds that don’t die when you talk. Or to have a conversation with Dash about her new trick. Or to go to Twilight’s sturdy library for a chat. She could be in a dream, but if she weren’t, then would kindness matter? What would become of the Elements? One was already dead. Fluttershy knew why everypony was dying. She didn’t know how such power could literally kill other ponies, but she knew it must be more than she thought before. Kindness, such a lovely word with a lovely meaning and a way of life to some. Fluttershy decided to stay more silent as usual. After all, her kindness is powerful enough to kill.
