Sometimes even gods get tired. They get bored of the same thing happening every night. They get fed up and try to do change things for the better. That's what Ra wanted. He wanted to remove Apophis from the equation once and for all, to ease his already heavy burden and make life easier for himself and his people. Luckily enough, Thoth knew a thing or two about magic, seeing as he invented it. A spell to remove the snake from their world would do wonders for all their free time and, all things considered, it worked out pretty well. Apophis was gone and Ra could raise the sun in peace.
