Trixie's College Days
The Letters that Changed it All
Load Full StoryNext ChapterHummingbirds hummed, Celestia's Sun shined, and the fresh morning air passed through the great city of Canterlot to an average household of respected unicorns. The Lulamoons were highly respected in this society and known for their brilliant daughter Trixie. Known for being an accelerated learner in Princess Luna's Academy for Gifted Unicorns, the sister school to Princess Celestia's School for Gifted Unicorns, she incessantly made the highest marks of her class; she also wasn’t shy to boast about it.
She tapped her hoof impatiently, waiting for the mail-pony to arrive with the letter that would change her life forever.
She let out an impatient snort. "Where are Ditzy Doo and the mail? I've been waiting for days now," she lamented to nopony.
"Be patient, dear. I'm sure she is just stopping for a muffin, as is her custom," cooed her mother, Ellen.
"But she’s always late... Even today, the most important day of my life. The day that I get to see if I was accepted into Canterlot University of Magic." She did her best to sound pitiful, but couldn’t hide the streak of arrogance from her voice. She was certain she was getting accepted.
Her mother only rolled her eyes, but her father took the bait. "What’s wrong princess? Is the mail-pony upsetting you?" Markus asked very seriously. "If she’s causing my little Trixie undue stress, I’ll have her job freed up by the weekend—”
"FATHER! Will you be quiet? I want to see Ditzy and not have you scare her muffins all over my mail... again."
Markus stared blankly at his daughter for a moment, as if uncomprehending that she had just rebuked him. He then promptly seemed to forget about it, turning his attention elsewhere and earning another eye-roll from his wife.
Down the street, Ditzy was taking her last bites on the moist, chewy, and delicious blueberry muffin from Bon Bon's Bakery on 12th and Faust. She scrambled through her mail bag to see who was next.
"Hmmm, let’s see here...” she muttered as she stared at the mail with one of her eyes. Her other eye seemed to stare at her empty plate, as if mourning the loss of another delicious muffin. “Aha, here we go... This is to Miss Trixie Lulamoon of 1220 Lunar Boulevard." A few ponies’ ears twitched in feigned disinterest, their gossip senses tingling. She flapped her wings weakly, causing her to hover a short distance above the ground, as she traveled to the marked location on her city map, when a nearby muffin cart suddenly made her hungrier for more of her favorite treat.
A few dozen muffins later, she finally arrived at the Lulamoon household.
Staring longingly out the window, Trixie finally spotted Ditzy with a muffin and a manila folder with the Canterlot University of Magic seal on it and leapt to her hooves in excitement. She galloped to the front door and counted down the seconds until Ditzy would arrive.
"20... 19... 18... 17... 16... 15... 14..." she rambles on down the number line. "5... 4... 3... 2... 1... 0!" she screamed the final number and wrenched the door open before Ditzy could even bring her hoof up to knock.
"Hello there, Miss Trixie Lulamoon! I have some mail for you toda-," Derpy began, but was interrupted by Trixie’s snatching muzzle and a subsequent slamming of the door in her face. Trixie’s eyes shone gleefully, darting back and forth for a place to open the manila folder, the sensitive document slowly becoming more damp as she held it in her muzzle.
"Trixie! Open that door, apologize to Ditzy, and give her this blueberry muffin as a sign of apology," Ellen commanded, standing at the entry to the kitchen and levitating a muffin from somewhere inside.
Trixie sighed, set the folder down gently on the floor, picked the muffin up with her magic, and opened the door. She snapped to the grey pony still standing at the doorway, confused, "Sorry about that, here’s a muffin." She then levitated the muffin directly into Derpy’s mouth, muffling what she expected to be a thank you, then said, “Yes, get back to your mail delivery or whatever,” before promptly closing the door again.
"Did you apologize?" questioned Ellen.
"Yes, of course," she replied. "Can I open the folder now?"
"All right..." came her mother’s hesitant reply. “Go ahead and open it.”
Trixie snatched the folder from her mother’s hooves and opened it as quickly as her magic would let her, a single strip of paper tearing from the top before she levitated the letter out to read it.

"Ha! Of course I was accepted! How could they not accept me, the incredibly talented and magnificently beautiful Trixie?” she gloated as her parents pointedly ignored her.
On the other side of Canterlot, located in the upper-class district, was the threshold of Night Light, Twilight Velvet and their brilliant and beautiful daughter Twilight Sparkle.
Twilight, while very kind and pleasant to those she met, preferred the company of herself and her books. She, like Trixie, was at the top of her class, and she, like Trixie, didn’t seem to have very many friends. Her adoptive brother, Shining Armor, and Shining Armor’s fiance, Princess Cadance, were the only ponies she really spoke with or acknowledged. This was a big day for her, just as it was for Trixie, as she was also anticipating a letter of acceptance to Canterlot University of Magic. Her young 18-year-old life was finally going to be an even bigger success than when she got accepted into Princess Celestia's School for Gifted Unicorns.
"Twilight.” Her mother interrupted her thoughtful reflection. “Can you come to the den? Your father and I need to have a word with you." Twilight Velvet spoke gently, the very sound of her voice seeming to sap the tension from the room.
"Yes, Mother, just a moment." Twilight trotted down from her personal library with Star Swirl the Bearded: The Compendium of Spells.
She passed all of her awards and plaques showing how much she had accomplished at Princess Celestia's School for Gifted Unicorns, many of which were awarded at Canterlot Castle from Princess Celestia herself.
She arrived at the den and sat in her favorite spot on the couch. "Hello Mother, hello Father. What was it you wanted to talk to me about?" She hesitated a moment, then ventured, “Am I in trouble?” She was somewhat afraid she’d been caught reading some “books” that were in the section of the public library labeled under 18+. Even though she was 18, she was still embarrassed to read them, but they were sooooooooo good.
"Your Mother and I have recieved word from Cadance and Shining Armor that you have been accepted into Canterlot University of Magic!" Night Light said with excitement in his voice, a grin splitting his face from ear to ear.
"Is that all? I thought there would be something more important you were going to tell me," she said with an unsurprised reaction to what she just heard. She knew that she would be going there without a doubt. Why would they be telling me this? she thought.
Twilight Velvet stood up and said, "You don't sound happy or even the slightest surprised about this. Did Shining armor or Cadance tell you already?" she questioned.
"No. I knew for a fact that i would get into the University. I never doubted I would get in there with Cadance being Director of Admissions and Dean of the University. Additionally, my grades are the highest in history alongside some other unicorn that goes to Princess Luna's School for gifted unicorns. Therefore, I knew that I would be accepted." Twilight stated the facts calmly and matter-of-factly.
After a brief shocked silence, Night Light finally volunteered his voice again. "Twilight, sweetie, we’re very proud of you. For a celebratory dinner, we are going to The Black Cello. I hear that some of the professors dine in there, so be on the lookout for them while we are there so you can get better acquainted with them. Sound good?"
Twilight Sparkle lowered the book and said, "All right. I will come to see the Professors and pay attention to the music, so you’re not constantly having to ask me to stop reading and listen to Octavia or whoever’s playing... .n one condition. You must tell Cadance to place me with a roommate who is relatively close to my intellectual level. Agreed?"
Both parents conversed briefly, then Twilight Velvet said, "We will tell this to Cadance, but we can’t guarantee anything."
"Great! I will finish this compendium, then later tonight we can go to The Black Cello." She abruptly stood, turned on her hoof, and trotted back to her library to finish her book and prepare for an evening of socializing.
